And the 2013 Stallions Are...

  • Comments

The 2013 Stallion Poll has been closed, and the winners are: Colonel John, Dunkirk, Einstein, Pioneerof the Nile, and Sea The Stars. Thanks everyone for voting. Dunkirk has the most registered 2013 2-year-olds with 137, followed by Sea The Stars with 118, Pioneerof the Nile with 98, Colonel John with 87, and Einstein with 44. The current named 2-year-olds are listed on their stallion pages. It's early, and many have not been named yet, but I will update the lists about once a week. These stallions will be the focus of the blog, and will help determine which races are previewed. As usual, however, I will give detailed information about each entry in the races, not just those by this year's stallions. I will also note works by our 2-year-olds, especially first works or new works by horses not mentioned previously in the blog. If your favorites did not make the list, I would encourage you to follow them on your own, and post updates in the comment section.

Until the 2-year-olds, start running, I will continue to preview Maiden Special Weight Races featuring 3-year-olds by the 2012 stallions (Big Brown, Curlin, Henrythenavigator, Midnight Lute, and The Green Monkey).

News and Notes

Henrythenavigator picked up his first Australian winner on January 16, when Donna Madeira (filly; Henrythenavigator - San Cristobel (NZ) by Fastnet Rock (AUS)) won her debut at Sandown. Donna Madeira was purchased for $112,298 as a yearling, and is the first foal out of the winning mare San Cristobel. San Cristobel is a half sister to 2 winners.

A Grand Win

Justoneatheguys (Corinthian - Always A Star (IRE) by Danehill), part of an entry with Myperfectvalentine (Curlin - Netherland (ARG) by Roy) was scratched, as well as Bacheliere (Include - Golden Party by Seeking the Gold). Funny Lady (Sharp Humor - Losing Faith by Broken Vow) was a late scratch. Industrial Policy (Harlan's Holiday - Copa de Oro by Coronado's Quest) was the heavy favorite. Myperfectvalentine was almost 8-1, and Sylvia T (Curlin - Brisquette by Unbridled's Song) was almost 10-1. The track was muddy, and the start was good. Myperfectvalentine grabbed the lead from her rail position. Guyana Star (A. P. Warrior - Bries Golden Girl by Geiger Counter) was applying some pressure, with Sylvia T up close while wide. Industrial Policy made up some ground to take third. On the turn, Guyana Star moved even with Myperfectvalentine. Myperfectvalentine fought that one off, but Industrial Policy and Sylivia T got by her, and Grand Mere (Bob and John - Petite Princess by Dayjur) was starting to get involved from the back. Sylvia T took the lead, but she couldn't hold off Grand Mere, who took it by 1/2 length. It was 5 lengths back to favorite Industrial Policy, followed by Myperfectvalentine and Guyana Star. Watch the Replay.

Demonic Victory

The track was fast, and all 8 ran. First-timer Demonic (Bernardini - Sincerely by Meadowlake) was the even-money favorite. On the Fence (Henrythenavigator - Seaquoia Blue by Forestry) was 66-1. I liked the look of Del Mar Sunset (Candy Ride (ARG) - Nymphette by Devil's Bag). He broke on top, but soon had company. Battled (Master Command - Grinch by Salt Lake) went up to set the pace, pressed by On the Fence. Tracking that pair were Raven's Honor (Raven's Pass - Heart of Honor by Honour and Glory) and Del Mar Sunset. He moved closer to the lead, and was joined by Tiz the Truth (Tiznow - Truly Blessed by French Deputy) on the inside. Demonic and Raven's Honor were just off of this scrum. Del Mar Sunset took the lead and Tiz the Truth moved into second, as On the Fence began to lose ground. Demonic was moving on the outside. He had to battle to pass the top two, with Tiz the Truth especially tough late. However, at the wire it was Demonic by a head over Tiz the Truth, with Del Mar Sunset another 1/2 length back. On the Fence tired to 8th after his early foot, but it was good to see him involved early. Watch the Replay.
