Getting Lucky

Hero's Marine (Street Hero - My Lady Marine by Little Missouri) was scratched. Midnight Lucky (Midnight Lute - Citiview by Citidancer) was favored, and she looked the part. Swimmin Insunshine (Successful Appeal - Gingham and Lace by Kris S.) outbroke Midnight Lucky and took the early lead. Midnight Lucky set after her, and these two soon separated from the others. Midnight Lucky was moved to the outside to apply some pressure. She took over the lead as they moved into the turn. Swimmin Insunshine began to retreat, as My Sweet Addiction (Tiznow - Healthy Addiction by Boston Harbor) moved into second. There was no catching Midnight Lucky, however, as she moved farther and farther in front, inspiring a "they would have to sprout wings" call from Trevor Denman. The final winning margin was 7 1/4 lengths. Expect to see Midnight Lucky in a stakes next time out. Watch the Replay.

Singing the Victory Aria

The race was taken off the turf, and run at a mile and an eighth on the sloppy main track. The change in surface led to many scratches. Bay King (Sligo Bay (IRE) - I P O Pat by Out of Place), Boundless Heart (Elusive Quality - Sacre Coeur by Saint Ballado), Giant of Broadway (Giant's Causeway - Beautyandthebeast (GB) by Machiavellian), All Alex (War Front - Justakiss by Mt. Livermore), Layton Register (War Chant - Blush On Cue by Theatrical (IRE)), P V Paul (Dynaformer - Grand Pauline by Two Punch), Boss Man (English Channel - Jenny Joy by Acceptable), and Music King (Sun King - Musical Harmony by Dixieland Band) were all left on the sidelines. Unitarian (Pulpit - Minimalist by Dynaformer) was favored amongst the 6 that were left. Midnight Aria (Midnight Lute - Shebandowana by Mt. Magazine) was 6-1. Gran Misterio (Saint Anddan - Girlish Giggle by Evansville Slew) was slow to start. The others were away well. Midnight Aria came up to set the pace. Rakete (Broken Vow - Wildlife Festival by Seeking the Gold) and Unitarian (Pulpit - Minimalist by Dynaformer) were his closest pursuers. Midnight Aria continued on top. Each time his opponents got closer, he spurted away again. He seemed to have the measure of Rakete and Unitarian, but Pontiff (Giant's Causeway - Preach by Mr. Prospector) was starting to close from the back. He kept coming and coming, but Midnight Aria continued to hold him off, and at the wire Midnight Aria had his neck in front. Pontiff was more than 3 lengths clear in second, with Unitarian third, followed by Rakete, Conversationalist (Unbridled's Song - Lacadena by Fasliyev), and Gran Mistero, who was eased late. Showing Off

There were no scratches, and the track was fast. Midnight Terror (Midnight Lute - Hallow Wean by Clever Trick) was the even-money choice. Ur Joshn Me (Wiseman's Ferry - I'm the Mary by Unbridled Time) also drew plenty of attention from the bettors. Captain D J (Smart Guy - Traffic Stopper by Lively One) stumbled at the start. The start was fair for the others. Foreign Officer (Eavesdropper - Wianno by Waquoit) took advantage of his rail spot to grab the early lead. Friendly Guy (Friendly Island - Distinctive Miss by Husband) and Ur Joshn Me were up there too. Midnight Terror wasn't far off, but was on the outside. On the turn, Ur Joshn Me moved up and took a short lead. Making up ground on the outside was Midnight Terror, and coming up the rail was Aisle Show You (Aisle - I Say I Do by Oh Say). It was Aisle Show You that grabbed the lead, and he pulled away for a 2 1/4 length victory. Ur Joshn Me just held off Midnight Terror for second, and these were more than 3 lengths in front of 4th-place Open Rebellion (Siphon (BRZ) - Rebel Rose by Sword Dance (IRE)). Watch the Replay.

Abraham, Abraham!

Quiros (Street Cry (IRE) - Quendom (ARG) by Interprete (ARG)) was scratched, and the track was sloppy. Abraham (Distorted Humor - Tabarin by El Prado (IRE)) was favored. Twining Hearts (Big Brown - Twining Star by Twining) was almost 19-1. They broke pretty much as a group, except for Right Right (Tapit - Blossomed by Deputy Minister), who was a little slow out of the gate. Squadron A (Unbridled's Song - Peaks Mill by Stalwart) and Abraham battled for the lead. Twining Hearts had a nice spot in third outside the leading pair. The next trio was Succesful Brothers (Invasor (ARG) - Contagious (GB) by Polar Falcon), Trade Rumor (Broken Vow - Valkyries' Ride by Dixieland Band), and The Candidate (Bernardini - Fortyniner Fever by Forty Niner). Squadron A and Abraham continued to battle up front. Twining Hearts was still in third, but he had company in the form of Trade Rumor, and after 6 furlongs Twining Hearts began to weaken. Abraham began to get away as they entered the stretch. Trade Rumor and The Candidate were making up some ground. Abraham drifted out and in in the stretch, allowing The Candidate and Trade Rumor to get close, but Abraham still crossed the wire a length in front. Twining Hearts weakened to 6th, but it wasn't a bad start for him. He may have been compromised by the sloppy track. By the way, I would love to see Abraham go far on the Triple Crown trail, as it is a most enjoyable name to yell. Watch the Replay.

A Sweet Win

The turf was good, and all nine ran. Our Love Tap (Tapit - Trickski by Peteski) was favored, but Sweet On You (Candy Ride (ARG) - New Edition by Stormy Atlantic) was well-respected as well. Raise Up (Henrythenavigator - Ticker Tape (GB) by Royal Applause (GB)) was 8-1, and Shaikha (Midnight Lute - Sally Slew by Slew City Slew) was 33-1. Our Love Tap broke outward. Freud's Mistress (Freud - Mistress Hemming by Quiet American) took the early lead. Sun Disk (A.P. Indy - Circle of Gold by Seeking the Gold) was the closest rival, but the first five were in a pretty close group. Included in this group were Raise Up, Our Love Tap, and Sweet On You. Sun Disk moved closer to Freud's Mistress, and then Sweet On You came up the rail to grab the lead. Freud's Mistress, Sun Disk, and Raise Up were after her. Freud's Mistress was the first to give way. Sun Disk was still pressuring Sweet On You, and Our Love Tap was coming to life on the outside. In the stretch, Sweet On You spurted away, coming home 3 1/4 lengths in front. Be My Kitten (Kitten's Joy - Unfold the Rose by Catienus) came on late to snag second from Sun Disk, with Our Love Tap back in fourth. Shaikha was never much involved, passing some tired ones and finishing 6th. Raise Up came in 7th after her early involvement, but it was an improvement over her debut. Watch the Replay.

re: Sunday's 5th at SA

I'll take a shot with Colburn who had the hopeless task of chasing a loose leader in an Extreme Race for Speed in his last.  With that additional race under his belt and the addition of blinkers, he may be able to reduce the distance between himself and the other two from the Jan 18th race.
