More Lute, and Landing Hope

News and Notes

Steve Haskin has good things to say about our Palace Malice (Curlin - Palace Rumor by Royal Anthem) in his latest Haskin's Derby Trail Blog. Palace Malice runs next in Saturday's Risen Star Stakes (gr. II) at Fair Grounds, where he'll meet a big field, including Mylute (colt; Midnight Lute - Stage Stop by Valid Expectations).

Since we appear to have no Maiden Special Weight Races scheduled for Thursday, I'll next update the blog on Thursday evening. I do provide details of the "Other Entries" for February 21 below.

February 17 Results

Shakin It Up (colt; Midnight Lute - Silver Bullet Moon by Vindication) was closer to the pace in the San Vicente Stakes (gr. II) than he had been in his early races, and had to wait for room, but once he found a spot between horses, he pulled away for a length win over Treasury Bill (Lemon Drop Kid - Wow Me Free by Menifee), with Caballo Del Cielo (Songandaprayer - Queen Majesty by Regal Classic) back in third. It was a nice patient ride by David Flores, who showed once again how well he fits this colt. Grade II winner Shakin It Up now has 2 wins, 1 second and 1 third in 4 starts, with earnings of $139,600. Watch the Replay. Read more about the San Vicente here.

One Game Govenor

There were no scratches, and the track was fast. Footbridge (Street Cry (IRE) - Thousand Islands (GB) by Dubai Millennium (GB)) was favored. Govenor Charlie (Midnight Lute - Silverbulletway by Storm Cat) was 5-1, and Syndicated (Midnight Lute - Letithappencaptain by Captain Bodgit) was 7-1. Syndicated went for the lead, but Govenor Charlie and Pure Loyalty (Simon Pure - Bourbon Night by Arch) were up there too. Govenor Charlie assumed a pressing position outside Syndicated. These two were followed by Pure Loyalty and Footbridge. Govenor Charlie moved even with Syndicated on the turn, and then took the lead. Pure Loyalty was looming on the outside, and Footbridge was still right there. Footbridge got through on the rail, and took a short lead. But Govenor Charlie was not giving up. He fought back gamely, and at the wire, he had his neck in front. This is the second time that a favored Footbridge was defeated by a Maiden Watch horse, as he lost to Curly Top (Curlin - Top Notch Lady by Sultry Song) last time out. It was more than three lengths back to Pure Loyalty in third, and Syndicated took fourth after setting the pace. Sunday was a good day for Silverbulletday, who is the second dam of both Govenor Charlie and Shakin It Up. Watch the Replay.

Meet Mr Palmer

All six ran on the fast track. Mr Palmer (Pulpit - In Truth by Quiet American) was the heavy favorite. Inmyfathersimage (Curlin - Friendly Michelle by Artax) was 7-2, just a few ticks higher than the entry of Navy Guard (Unbridled's Song - Fleet Lady by Avenue of Flags) and Incognito (A.P. Indy - Octave by Unbridled's Song). The start was good. Longshot Chambers Bay (Point Given - Violet Lady by Seattle Slew) emerged with the lead, but the field was pretty well bunched. Inmyfathersimage grabbed the rail, and second, early, with Regular Business (Circular Quay - All Milady by Medieval Man) third. Chambers Bay and Inmyfathersimage continued 1-2, but Mr Palmer was advancing. He slipped to the lead, seemingly without effort. Chambers Bay began to retreat. Inmyfathersimage took a run at Mr Palmer, but Mr Palmer spurted away again. A fresh challenge came from Incognito. He was gaining and gaining, but ran out of real estate, and it was Mr Palmer by a neck at the finish. It was better than 6 lengths back to Navy Guard in third, who was 10 in front of Inmyfathersimage. Competing the field were Regular Business and Chambers Bay. Watch the Replay.

Other February 17 Results

Aventurine (filly; Big Brown - Julie Truly by Miner's Mark) was the 2-1 favorite in Race 6 at Gulfstream Park, a Maiden Claiming Race (Claiming Price $50,000) at 1 1/16 miles on the firm turf, was up with the pace from the start, and drew off to win by 2 lengths late. Watch the Replay.

A. M. Mayhem (colt; Midnight Lute - Littlebitabling by Carson City) finished 5th in Race 2 at Aqueduct, a mile Maiden Claiming Race (Claiming Price $25,000). Favorite Beeliner (Silver Train - Breach of Promise by Carson City) went straight to the front, and won by 1 length.  Watch the Replay.

Sassy Brunette (filly; Big Brown - Turkappeal by Turkoman) was pulled up in Race 2 at Santa Anita Park, a mile and a sixteenth Starter Allowance Race, but walked off under her own power. Favorite Sweet Red Cat (Bluegrass Cat - Sweet Soul by Lord Avie) drew off late for a 2 3/4 length win. Watch the Replay.

Big Lute (colt; Midnight Lute - V V S Flawless by Deputy Minister) chased pacesetter Super Ninety Nine (Pulpit - Exogenetic by Unbridled's Song) early, and then tired to finish 7th, a head in front of Brown Almighty (colt; Big Brown - Gone Goodbye by Gone for Real), who was never much involved, in the Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn, which was run on a sloppy track. Favorite Super Ninety Nine ran away with the race, winning by 11 1/4 lengths. It's hard to know what to make of this race, given the sloppy conditions. It looks like Brown Almighty will try synthetic next, and then maybe back to turf. Big Lute was just making his second start, and his first at farther than 6 furlongs, so it isn't surprising that he got tired. He should continue to progress. Watch the Replay. Hope Lands in the Winner's Circle

All ten ran. The turf was rated good, and it was raining. Hopelands (Curlin - Myrtle Beach by Kingmambo) was favored. There was a scramble for the early lead. Hopelands got it, but Bold Bruja (Purge - Flewsy by Marfa) was right with her. Hot Chocolate Hit (Flatter - Hosanna Hit by Formal Gold) and Faith and Fortune (Bob and John - Summer Queen by Summer Squall) were the next pair. Hopelands and Bold Bruja continued to battle. Hot Chocolate Hit came on to join the top two, as the field started to bunch up. Suddenly, Hopelands surged away from the pack, leaving her rivals to fight for the minor awards. She crossed the wire 4 1/2 lengths in front. Hard Cider (Liquor Cabinet (IRE) - Alley's Account by Alamocitos) was best of the rest, taking second over Hot Chocolate Hit, with Pico Chulo (Election Day (IRE) - Tridiskia Phobea by Guadalupe Peak) closing for fourth. Watch the Replay.

Delivering at Aqueduct

Desert Traveler (Desert Warrior - Movin Along by D'Accord) was scratched, and the track was fast. City Gone Wild (City Zip - Eishin Houlton by Wild Again) was the tepid favorite, at almost 5-2. Current Event (Curlin - Grand Merger by A.P. Indy) was 10-1. La Bella Chabella (Eurosilver - Western Melody by West by West) broke inward, squeezing Brickhouse Baby (Golden Missile - Clay's Run by Chester House), who was shuffled back to trail. Physical Delivery (Majestic Warrior - Dixie Lyrics by Dixie Union) broke on top, but was soon joined and passed by Chloe Bear (Macho Uno - Giant Cause by Giant's Causeway), who took advantage of her inside position. Life's a Stage (Shakespeare - Bounding Boldly by Bounding Basque) and Soul Opposition (Thunder Gulch - Soul Possession by Belong to Me) were in close pursuit, with La Bella Chabella just behind. The latter filly was rank, and had to steady. Life's a Stage found some room on the rail, and came on through to grab the lead. Her time in the spotlight was short-lived, however, as Soul Opposition, Physical Delivery, City Gone Wild, and Current Event all went by. As they entered the stretch, it appeared to be between Soul Opposition and Physical Delivery. It was Physical Delivery who was going best late, to win by 1/2 length. Soul Opposition was 1 1/2 lengths in front of City Gone Wild and Current Event, who were separated by a head in third and fourth. Watch the Replay.

No comments on the 3YO's but since last year was the year of the Midnights, shall we do our own winter book on whether the next year will be the year of the WWII sites (Dunkirk - I am hoping for a Dieppe), the year of physics (Einstein - is there any MCSquared?), the year of the ancient Egyptians (PioneeroftheNile - any references to Ramses or Mr. Cairo?), the year of the Sea or Stars (Sea the Stars - any cruise line names yet?), or the year of the military (Colonel John - I'm hoping for a "Leftenant" something)?

mz - There is an E Equalsmcsquared. But, the biggest pattern is probably all the stars (and seas) for Sea The Stars.
