A Beautiful Win for Bella Castani

Sky Treasure (Sky Mesa - Preemptive Attack by Smart Strike) was the only scratch, and the grass was firm. First-timer Secret Jewel (Bernardini - Silk n' Sapphire by Smart Strike) was the 2-1 favorite, but Bella Castani (Big Brown - Caroni by Rubiano) took plenty of play, going off at 3-1, after a morning-line of 12-1. She looked good in the paddock. Vita Vittoria (Medaglia d'Oro - Bashful Charmer by Capote) caught my eye, and Sweet Kate (Mr. Greeley - Katerbug by Pulpit) made a favorable impression going to the track. Creative License (Showing Up - Miss Fear Factor by Siphon (BRZ)) went to the lead, with Sweet Kate her nearest pursuer. Bella Castani was near the back early, but she made a middle move on the outside, passing several to reach contention. Creative License and Sweet Kate were still on top, but Triple Arch (Arch - Ambling by Chester House) and Wine Burglar (Rock Hard Ten - Bluegrass Sara by Tabasco Cat) were inching closer, and Bella Castani was looming on the outside. Wine Burglar made a move to join the leaders, but Bella Castani was starting to roll. She blew them away in the stretch, crossing the line 4 1/4 lengths in front, while finishing well off the rail. Favorite Secret Jewel and longshot Glamorously (Ghostzapper - Classy Credentials by Golden Missile) closed for second and third, and Wine Burglar tired to fourth. Watch the Replay.
