Southern Style

The track was fast. Taquito (Borrego - Latin Lust by Petionville) and Laddie Boy (War Pass - Lil's Lassie by Lil's Lad) were scratched. Southern Blessing (Dixie Union - Yolie's Choice by Silver Deputy) was the even-money favorite. Indigo Diamond (Belong to Me - Acadeca by Royal Academy) and Runkle (Yes It's True - Elizabeth Street by Street Cry (IRE)) went for the lead. Southern Blessing was at the back early. Pontos (Tale of the Cat - Winning Chance by Alphabet Soup) was in tight, tried to run over Phenomenalmoon (Malibu Moon - Runaway Ransom by Cherokee Run) and had to steady, retreating to the back. Indigo Diamond and Runkle continued to race as a team, tracked by Southern Blessing. Pontus was still a bit green, but was starting to make up some ground. Runkle and Indigo Diamond continued on top into the stretch, but Southern Blessing was hitting his best stride. He went by the pacesetters to record a length win. Following the winner was Pontos, who got his head in front of Runkle for second. The fairly tight pack was completed by Indigo Diamond and Phenomenalmoon. A very professional win for Southern Blessing, but keep your eye on Pontos, who kept on running despite trouble. Watch the Replay.

An Awesome Win

All six ran on the Cushion Track. Randino (Discreet Cat - Selborne by French Deputy) was favored. Alpine Luck (Lucky J. H. - I Can Yodele by Swiss Yodeler) was unsettled in the gate. Nevada City (Cee's Tizzy - Alarcity by Allen's Prospect) hesitated at the start and trailed. Randino and Raise the Hoof (Parading - Time Buyer by Danzig) mixed it up early, with Alpine Luck just off of this pair. Willie B Awesome (Awesome Gambler - Cause I'm Tricky by Nineeleven) broke with this group, but then dropped back a bit in fourth. Go First (Kafwain - Go Ruby Go by Rubiano) and Nevada City were at the back. Randino had a clear lead in the stretch, but ducked into the rail. He fell, which left the lead and the win to Willie B Awesome. He was followed by Go First, who ran well late, and Alpine Luck. Raise the Hoof and Nevada City both had to steady around the fallen horse, finishing 4th and 5th. Randino was euthanized because of his injuries. His jockey Garrett Gomez was taken to the hospital, but was later released. Please note that the accident is clearly visible on the replay. Watch the Replay.
