Striking Winner

The track was fast, and there were no scratches. Elena Strikes (Smart Strike - Ticket to Houston by Houston) opened at 3-5 and went down from there. Sensational Value (Zensational - Expect Becky by Valid Expectations) made a favorable impression, and The Slipper Fits (Smoke Glacken - Naught Naught by Beau Genius) caught my eye, but I couldn't find fault with the favorite. The Slipper Fits was a bit reluctant to load. Tex Appeal (Successful Appeal - Tellum Texan by Eastern Echo) and The Slipper Fits broke on top, but they were split by Gem City Gal (Mr. Sekiguchi - Indian Life by Indian Charlie), who went on to set the pace. Tex Appeal and The Slipper Fits chased after Gem City Gal, and favorite Elena Strikes was looming in fourth. She made her move on the outside, moving even with the pacesetter on the turn. Elena Strikes then eased to the lead and went on to post a 2 3/4-length win. The Slipper Fits outfinished Tex Appeal to take second by a neck, Gem City Gal tired to be fourth, and Harbor Mistress (Rockport Harbor - Drusilla by Mr. Greeley) and Sensational Value completed the running order. Watch the Replay.

Nothing But Luck

Nevada City (Cee's Tizzy - Alarcity by Allen's Prospect) was scratched, leaving Alpine Luck (Lucky J. H. - I Can Yodele by Swiss Yodeler) as the only entrant with experience. He was made the 5-2 favorite, just a tick lower than Celtic Moon (Denis of Cork - Beastlie Moon by Three Wonders). Also well-regarded were Ontology (Tapit - Shytoe Lafeet by King of Kings (IRE)) and Sure Victory (Kitalpha - Sure Tiz by Tiznow). Ready to Jam (Ready's Image - Speedy Gladys Jam by Golden Missile) caught my eye, and Punxsutawney Phil (McCann's Mojave - Tialinga by Cee's Tizzy) warmed up well. Fuzzy Logic (Into Mischief - Deal Us In by Mister Baileys (GB)) looked a little wild. Alpine Luck looked best. Ready to Jam hopped at the start, and was off slowly. Alpine Luck outbroke everyone and went to the lead. Ontology and Punxsutawney Phil set after him. Fuzzy Logic made up some ground to get involved, and Sure Victory gained on the rail. Continuing to lead, however, was Alpine Luck. Ontology seemed the biggest threat on the inside, but Alpine Luck held him off. At the wire, it was Alpine Luck by 1 1/2 lengths. Ontology was a clear second, better than 4 in front of the others, who were led by Celtic Moon. Sure Victory was back in fourth, followed by Hollywood Groom (Sought After - Ali's Dancer by Marshua's Dancer), Fuzzy Logic, Ready to Jam, and Punxsutawney Phil. Watch the Replay.
