Last Goodbye for Dunkirk's Storm

News and Notes

A couple of Maiden wins for older horses which are noteworthy for different reasons.

Chief White Fox (The White Fox - Diamonds and Lace by Shirttail Flying), a rare white 3-year-old colt, broke his maiden in his 9th start, running a mile at Mountaineer on July 1. Watch the Replay. Chief White Fox is out of the winning mare Diamonds and Lace, who has 2 additional winners. Diamonds and Lace, who is a bay, is a half sister to 4 winners, including stakes-placed Proliver. Chief White Fox is a member of the last crop of the white stallion The White Fox, who won one race and finished third three times. Read more about this race here.

Also breaking his maiden on July 1 was four-year-old Spicer Cub (Louis Quatorze - Carni's Luck by Carnivalay). He took the 5th race at Delaware Park, a mile contest over a sloppy track. Watch the Replay. You may be familiar with Spicer Cup as the horse that bolted during a start on April 13 at Pimlico, going outside the gate, and still managed to finish second.

Spicer Cub's adventurous finish on April 13.

Spicer Cub is out of stakes-placed Carni's Luck, who is the dam of one other winner. Carni's Luck is a half sister to 2 winners.

June 30 Result

A Dandy Win

The track was fast, but She's Coal Fired (Brother Derek - Suchaprettygirl by Mazel Trick), Mister Pollard (Pollard's Vision - Sweet Summer by Summer Squall), Aft (Mizzen Mast - Ms. Aleah by Mr. Greeley), Bad Bob (Pure Prize - Sheba's Step by Alysheba), and Hi Torree (Unbridled's Song - Highland Torree by Menifee) were all scratched. This left a field of 7 unraced entrants. Conquest Titan (Birdstone - Miner's Secret by Mineshaft) opened at 1-2, and continued to receive most of the attention from the bettors. Dunkin Bend (Dunkirk - Misty Run by Vindication) was 7-2, and Base Case Scenario (Pioneerof the Nile - Mamboalot by Kingmambo) was 11-1. Conquest Titan certainly was a head turner, but I was also liking Candy Dandy (Candy Ride (ARG) - Saracina by Bertrando) and Archway to Heaven (Arch - Tazarine by Cat Thief). Both of the Maiden Watch horses made favorable impressions, although I prefered Base Case Scenario on looks. The load was uneventful. Angry Moon (Langfuhr - Half Sister by More Than Ready) was away slowly. Conquest Titan went right for the lead, but Dunkin Bend and Candy Dandy both set after him. There was a break back to Base Case Scenario in fourth. Candy Dandy dropped back a bit, letting the other two battle. Dunkin Bend got his nose in front of the favorite as they entered the stretch, but Candy Dandy was looming on the outside. He rolled on home, crossing the line 5 lengths in front. Dunkin Bend was a clear second, and Base Case Scenario got by Conquest Titan late for third. The top four finishers in this one seem worthy of a follow going forward. Watch the Replay.
