Sweetsoutherndame (filly; Colonel John - Southbound by Southern Image) was no match for winner Skylander Girl (Stroll - Heliotrope by Northern Score) in the Ontario Debutante Stakes on the Polytrack at Woodbine, but she fought off Madly Truly (Malibu Moon - Beautifulballerina by Nureyev) to claim second by a nose. Watch the Replay. Stakes-placed Sweetsoutherndame now has 1 win and 1 second in 3 starts, with earnings of $47,050.

No Trouble

Only the Also-Eligibles were scratched, and the track was fast. Sound of Freedom (War Front - With Golden Wings by Seeking the Gold) was favored, and Hail to the Nile (Pioneerof the Nile - Takeaway by Fly So Free) was 25-1. Sound of Freedom was looking mighty nice in the paddock. Hail to the Nile was a little late to the post parade. Sound of Freedom was the first out of the gate. In Trouble (Tiz Wonderful - Ballpark Butterfly by Grand Slam) and Tiznowforamerica (Tiznow - Papa to Kinzie by Boston Harbor) set after him. Borseggiatore (Hard Spun - Streetwiseandtough by Street Cry (IRE)) and Mosler (War Front - Gold Vault by Arch) were the next pair. Tiznowforamerica went up to put pressure on Sound of Freedom. Sound of Freedom fought off that rival, but In Trouble was looming on the outside. He wore down the weakened Sound of Freedom, and got up for a 3/4-length win. Three and 3/4 lengths behind these, Tiznowforamerica just held off Mosler for third. These were followed by Point Hope (Elusive Quality - Jinni by A.P. Indy), Hail to the Nile, who was never much involved, a rank Roberto Gato (Zensational - Cat News by Storm Cat), and a tired Borseggiatore. Watch the Replay.

Mud is the Word

All ten ran, and the track was fast. My Dandy Girl (Real Dandy - My Girl Aleyna by Outflanker) was favored. Bad River Belle (Dunkirk - Lady Tapestry by Runaway Groom) was 8-1, and Avi'sblazinvictory (Pioneerof the Nile - Maltese Indy by A.P. Indy) was 9-1. I thought Sudden Tempest (High Cotton - Pace Mate by Conscience Clear) was kind of interesting. Bad River Belle looked good on the track, but she came out of the gate slowly. My Dandy Girl and Sudden Tempest battled early. Also up close were Zeta Zody (Omega Code - The Penguin by Devious Course) and My Name's Mud (Mud Route - Campin' Girl by Old Topper). My Dandy Girl had the lead, but My Name's Mud and Zeta Zody came up on the outside. Meanwhile, Bad River Belle was starting to gain from the back. My Name's Mud took the lead and began to pull away. Bad River Belle made a run, but My Name's Mud had too much of a head start, and she passed the line 2 lengths in front. Bad River Belle had to settle for second, with favorite My Dandy Girl back in third. She was followed by When We Laugh (Outflanker - Queen of Laughs by Monarchos), Zeta Zody, Enact (El Roblar - Cove Point by Conquistador Cielo), Avi'sblazinvictory, who ran evenly, Hopping Scarlet (Silver Poet - Hopping Casey by Cloud Hopping), Sudden Tempest, and Darkessa (Hacker - Dark Contessa by Expanding Man). Congratulations to Stopshoppingdebbie. It was interesting reading the comments by her trainer in the paper this AM. He said that they wanted her to come from off the pace and see how she would respond for future races. She did quite well. He also said that she is the total package, great mind and lots of ability.
