2013 Maiden Watch Stallion Review

Happy New Year, and Happy Birthday to all the Thoroughbreds. I'll celebrate the beginning of 2014 with a look back at how our 2013 stallions fared. It was a good year overall, as our stallions finished 1-2-3 on the 2013 North American Leading First-Crop Sire List (ranked by money earned). Seems like readers did a good job of selecting which stallions to watch.

Colonel John

Colonel John had 33 runners in 2013, which started a total of 92 times, recording 9 wins, 10 seconds, 9 thirds, and earnings of $675,514. He had 7 individual winners, and finished 3rd on the First-Crop Sire list (ranked by earnings). Grade II winner Concave (Colonel John - Galadriel by Ascot Knight) led the way amongst the Colonel John offspring, earning $207,450 with a win in the Sorrento Stakes (gr. II) and a third in both the Del Mar Debutante Stakes (gr. I) and the Delta Downs Princess Stakes (gr. II). Other stakes performers for Colonel John were grade I stakes-placed Colonel Joan (Colonel John - Live 'n Laugh by Dixieland Band), who finished 3rd in both the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (gr. IT) and the Surfer Girl Stakes, despite having not yet broken her maiden, and earned $127,250; stakes-placed Here's Johnny (Colonel John - Bon Caro by Bon Point (GB)), who was 2nd in both the Kentucky Downs Juvenile Stakes and the Juvenile Turf Stakes; stakes-placed Sweetsoutherndame (Colonel John - Southbound by Southern Image), who was 2nd in both the Ontario Debutante Stakes and the Arlington-Washington Lassie Stakes, and stakes-placed Thunder Run (Colonel John - La Defense by Wild Again), who was 3rd in the Sunday Silence Stakes. Like Colonel Joan, Thunder Run has not yet won a race.

Dunkirk finished the year atop the First-Crop Sire List (by earnings). His 48 runners have made 118 combined starts, registering 17 wins, 16 seconds, 15 thirds, and earnings of $1,212,586. He has 14 individual winners, including 2 stakes winners. Grade I winner Havana (Dunkirk - Missy Turtle by Kyle's Our Man) won his first 2 starts, including the Foxwoods Champagne Stakes (gr. I), and then finished 2nd in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I). Overall, he has earned $708,000. Grade III winner Dunkin Bend (Dunkirk - Misty Run by Vindication) also has 2 wins, a maiden victory at Saratoga and the Sapling Stakes (gr. III). He has earned $123,000. Dunkirk has also produced stakes-placed winners Silver Screen Lady (Dunkirk - Sea Dragoness by Sea Hero), 2nd in both the CTBA Lassie Stakes and the Silver Cup Futurity Filly Division Stakes, Blacksilkstockings (Dunkirk - Cactus Belle by Gone West), 2nd in the Tah Dah Stakes, and Conniption Fit (Dunkirk - Hidden Temper by Miswaki), second in the Juvenile Stakes. Dunkirk's final stakes performer is maiden Bad River Belle (Dunkirk - Lady Tapestry by Runaway Groom), who was third in the Northern Lights Debutante Stakes.

Einstein

Einstein had fewer 2-year-olds than our other stallions, and therefore fewer runners, but he still managed to finish in 14th place among the first crop sires. He had 14 runners, which made 47 total starts, recording 6 wins, 5 seconds, 5 thirds, and earnings of $306,773, with 5 individual winners. He had 2 stakes performers, stakes-placed E Equalsmcsquare (Einstein (BRZ) - Prairie Spring by Conquistador Cielo), who finished 2nd in both the Landaluce Stakes and the Anoakia Stakes, and grade III stakes-placed Rankhasprivileges (Einstein (BRZ) - Scrape by Mr. Prospector), who was third in the Delta Downs Jackpot Stakes (gr. III). Also of note is So Smart (Einstein (BRZ) - Zada Rae by Unbridled's Song), who has 2 wins and 1 second in 4 starts.

He had 13 individual winners. Leading earner for Pioneerof the Nile was grade II winner Cairo Prince (Pioneerof the Nile - Holy Bubbette by Holy Bull), who won the Nashua Stakes (gr. II), and finished a close second (behind Honor Code) in the Remsen Stakes (gr. II). He earned $272,000 overall. Pioneerof the Nile had one other stakes performer, as River Dancer (Pioneerof the Nile - Clever Actress by Theatrical (IRE)) finished 2nd in the With Anticipation Stakes (gr. IIT).

His only stakes horse was group III winner My Titania (Sea The Stars (IRE) - Fairy of The Night (IRE) by Danehill), who had one second and 2 wins in 3 starts, including a victory in the C.L. Weld Park Stakes (Ire-III). His other multiple winner is Kentucky-bred Stars Over the Sea (Sea The Stars (IRE) - Exciting Times (FR) by Jeune Homme), who has 2 wins in 5 starts.

Coldfacts

Pioneerof the Nile and Dunkirk were conditioned in a High Octane Barn. Horses from such barns do not normally make either smooth or successful transitions as stallions. Check all the brilliant colts and fillies that Bob Baffert and Todd Pletcher have trained against their stud records.

Flower Alley - sired I’ll Have Another – Pletcher

Roman Ruler – sired Ruler On Ice – Baffert

One stallion from each barn has sired the winner of a TC race to date. What happened to the litany of brilliant colts that both have trained? There is no need to even ask about the fillies.

Despite the ability shown by Ciaro and Havana they will not be in the mix when the Derby is being decided.
