Proud to be a Winner
All Dun (Dunkirk - Power of the Pad by Siphon (BRZ)) was scratched, as well as Grand Moon (Malibu Moon - Grand Prayer by Grand Slam). The track was fast for the remaining 11. First-timer Proud to be Wild (Wildcat Heir - Rainbow Pride by Prospectors Gamble) was favored, and Swiss Army Wife (Colonel John - Se Bella by Forestry), also making her debut, was 18-1. Toccet to Me Baby (Toccet - Saltwater Taffy by Doneraile Court) hopped at the start. Street Interest (Street Cry (IRE) - A. P. Interest by A. P. Indy) bumped with her rivals, and Ginger Snap (Discreet Cat - Two Hollys by Two Punch) bore in. To the lead went Nicki Flash (Birdstone - She'll Be Doggone by Gone West). Her pursuers included Swiss Army Wife, as well as Proud to be Wild, Reckless Move (Pulpit - Barbie Doll Type by Rahy), and Ginger Snap. Swiss Army Wife came out of the pack to put pressure on Nicki Flash, and these two separated from the others. They left a hole on the rail, however, and Proud to be Wild motored through to take the lead. She went on to post a 6 1/4-length win. Nicki Flash held second, and Moonstone Magic (Malibu Moon - Never Fail by Holy Bull) closed well to pick up third. Swiss Army Wife weakened and finished fourth, but it was not a bad debut from her.
