The Peace Rules colt, Persian, becomes the latest of our 2-year olds to pass the entry box. Persian is entered in a 4.5 furlong race at Churchill Downs on May 7. Six of his opponents are colts, the seventh is the filly, Mar Fina.
Persian is out of Lady Cheryl, a stakes winning Williamstown mare who earned $189,054. Lady Cheryl did not run as a 2-year old, but she has produced a 2-year old winner. Persian sold for $32,000 as a yearling.
Two of the competitors in this race are familiar, Screen Your Friend (Friends Lake - Screen Prospect by Rare Performer) finished fourth in Tiger Rules' initial start, on April 18 at Keeneland, a race won by Run Away and Hide who subsequently won the Kentucky Stakes. The dam of Screen Your Friend won or placed in 15 stakes (7 of them graded) and earned $575,747. As a 2-year
old, she started 3 times winning her first two starts and finishing 2nd in the
Gold Digger Stakes. Six of Screen Prospect's offspring have raced and all have
won, 2 won during their 2-year old season. Friends Lake won 2 out of 3 as a
2-year old, including the Sleepy Hollow Stakes.
Out of the Van (Van Nistelrooy - Festina by Festin (ARG)) finished 5th in a Maiden Special Weight at Keeneland on April 24, Medaglia d'Onore's initial start. This was the race won by the impressive Mr Mistoffelees. Out of the Van is a half-brother to two winners.
The high-seller in this race was Segal (Harlan's Holiday - Boatman Road by Lord at War (ARG)) who sold for $235,000 as a 2-year old. Segal's dam failed to win at the track, but she is a half-sister to two winners, one of which was a debut winner.
The lone filly in the race, Mar Fina (Tale of the Cat - Atherbest by Silver Hawk) sold for $45,000 as a yearling. Her dam won $78,400 and has produced Gran Botija who had one win, one second, and one third as a 2-year old and who was stakes-placed at 2 and 3 in Panama.

New to this blog
Only one new worker for May 6, but it's a good one. The delightfully named Doodlebopmcgowan (filly; Speightstown - Royal Sweep by End Sweep) worked at Frost Training Center, recording a time of :35.20 for 3 furlongs. I can't wait to hear a track announcer get a hold of that one. Doodlebopmcgowan is a half-sister to one winner who has earned $60,908 through 2008, but who didn't run as a 2-year old. Doodlebopmcgowan's dam, Royal Sweep, is a half-sister to four winners including grade II stakes winner, Regally Appealing. Regally Appealing won or placed in four stakes as a 2-year old including a victory in the Adirondack (gr. II).
