Broadway Hennessey Turns the Tables on Congo Kaye

This race was similar to the Juan Gonzalez Memorial Stakes, Congo Kaye (Congaree) was off slow while a pair dueled up front. She started picking up horses early and then closed in the stretch. The difference was that in this race, Broadway Hennessey was not one of the duelers. Instead, she sat off the pace and pounced on the spent leaders. Thus, she had more than enough to hold off the charging Congo Kaye. Still, it was good to see that Congo Kaye's debut wasn't a fluke.

Will O Way Outduels Pink Gloss; Ameribelle Fourth

Ameribelle (Medaglia d'Oro), who was the slight favorite in the race, came out of the gate well and secured a stalking position. She was 4 wide in the stretch and lacked punch, but did run on evenly to finish 4th. Meanwhile up front, Pink Gloss was setting an easy pace with Wicked Woman of Ny in close attendence. Will O Way came rolling late to get the win.

Miss Ocean City Dances the Socks off of the Pearl

Miss Ocean City cruised to the lead and was pretty unhindered with Ride With the Herd the closest pursuer. Pumpkin Shell made a move in the stretch to cut into the margin of victory. But, the most impressive move was made by Persistently. Off slowly, she was not in the picture until late. At the end, she was gobbling up ground. This is definitely one to watch. Danceyoursocksoff (Pleasantly Perfect) was in a good spot in 4th, but couldn't make up any ground. A big disappointment was Pearl of Valor (Medaglia d'Oro) who never looked comfortable out there and ran 6th the whole way round.

Cardinal Express Knows Da Bear Facts

Atsatsuki took the early lead, but he was joined by Cardinal Express and Lord Dubai. Those two made a match race out of the contest, dueling side-by-side with not much space between. At the end, Cardinal Express gained the advantage. Da Bear Facts (Congaree) ran evenly in fourth and was well clear of the 5th place horse. However, he had little impact on the top 3. Evenly seems to have been the word for this day.

Pick's Express (Speightstown - Program Pick by Peterhof), who broke his maiden on June 28, becomes the first of our Maiden winners to run in an allowance race. One of the reasons is because there are not a lot of allowance races for 2-year olds carded early on, since there aren't enough horses to fill them. Since that win, Pick's Express has had two decent works at Calder. Pick's Express dam was a stakes winner at 2 and 3. Pick's Express is a half-brother to 6 winners including Stormy Pick who won the Spinaway (gr. I) and the Sorority (gr. III) as a 2-year old and earned $441,900 in her career.

Capulet (Delaware Township - Hawk Dance by Silver Hawk) has run three times. He finished 3rd in his debut on May 10, and broke his maiden on May 24. Both of those races were at 4.5 furlongs. On June 15, he finished fifth in the B L's Sweep Stakes at 5 furlongs.

Also a veteran of 3 starts is Prince Joshua (First Tour - Allendar by Prince Alydar) who won a Maiden Claiming event on July 13 at 5.5 furlongs, after finishing 2nd twice previously.

Lots of Tricks (City Place - Gray Trick by Favorite Trick) is by first year sire City Place. City Place is the sire of 6 runners who have made 11 total starts, recording 3 wins, 2 seconds, and $78,873. Lots of Tricks has run three times, breaking his maiden in a Maiden Claiming race after recording 2 fifth place finishes at the Maiden Special Weight level.

Code Runner (Omega Code - Basque N the Storm by Mystery Storm) is by first-crop sire, Omega Code. Omega Code's 17 runners have made 37 starts, recording 7 wins, 3 seconds, and 5 thirds. Code Runner has run twice, breaking his maiden in his debut on June 7, and then running 8th in the Frank Gomez Memorial Stakes.

B B's Song (Concerto - Bye Bye Brazil by Who's for Dinner) broke his maiden on July 5, after previously finishing 2nd on June 13. Both of his races were at Calder.

Purely by Chance (Pure Precision - Half Gold by Half a Year) won his only start, a Maiden Claiming race at 4.5 furlongs at Calder on June 13.

Wow, this was quite a race. Congo Kaye came out of the gate like a debut runner, slowly. The rest of the field was many lengths in front (it's hard to say how many, since she wasn't on the television screen). I thought, well this one's over. Up front, the 1-5 favorite, Broadway Hennessey, and Got Tobe Rio were dueling. Suddenly, Congo Kaye made an appearance and I could see that she was picking off horses rather easily. I thought, hey, she might hit the board. But, she kept coming and coming. She came upon the weakened leaders and dispensed with Got Tobe Rio. Broadway Hennessey put up a little resistance, but she was no match for Congo Kaye.

Now, I know this wasn't the toughest field, but to get left at the gate and make up that much ground in a 5.5 furlong race is a noteworthy feat, especially for a first-time starter. You can see a replay of the race at http://www.calracing.com. Registration is required, but it's free.

I had $5 to win on her and I also played a $1 trifecta, which paid $262.40. You may wonder if I always back the Maiden Watch horses. I don't always, but I usually put a couple dollars on them ($2 to win and $5 to show is normal). The only reason I put $5 to win on her, is because I didn't think a show bet was worth playing with a 1-5 in the field.

No Dueling with Alex

Eventful start to this one, as Fifty Five Grand refused to break with the rest of the field. The Crooner held the early lead, followed closely by Beacon Hill Road. Dueling Alex was sitting at the back of the leading pack. He cruised to the lead on the turn and drew off for a pretty easy win. Beacon Hill Road was the best of the rest while The Crooner tired and only beat the tardy Fifty Five Grand. Precious Package was green, but closed for third.

Bear Rockets over L. A. and Conductor

Bear's Rocket went right to the lead in this one with Broadway Al in pursuit. It looked like Broadway Al would go by Bear's Rocket several times, but he never did. This is Broadway Al's third 2nd place finish in a row and you start to wonder whether he has some reluctance to go by horses. L. A. Rules and Bear's Conductor ran as a team for much of the race, in the 3rd and 4th spots. But, Bear's Conductor tired to 6th (while his stablemate was drawing off for the win) and L. A. Rules just got beat out of 3rd by Red Leader.

C. S. Draws In and Draws Off; Danceyoursocksoff 7th

C. S. Silk sat off of a quick pace set by Littleprincessemma, Trusty Temper, and, Missy Lou. C. S. Silk came four wide and bam, just like that was in the front. She ended up winning by more than 6, to become the 2nd winner on the day for Medaglia d'Oro. The final time (1:10.47) was faster than the two 6 furlong races run by the 2-year old colts on July 5. I know that the track changes day to day, but it was still a good final time. Maxinkuckee Miss closed very well to pick up 2nd, and our old friend Missy Lou hung around for third. Danceyoursocksoff came out of the gate a beat slow and raced fairly evenly. Yes, she was 7th, but this was a 12 horse field, so there were five horses behind her. As C.S. Silk showed, experience can be helpful.

News and Notes

I looked up from my computer this afternoon to see HRTV discussing a familiar face, Renaldothewizard. They were still talking about his victory last Wednesday (July 2).

Forgot to mention yesterday, the impressive victory by Zion (Thunder Gulch - Riverkeeper by Awesome Again) at Churchill Downs. In a race that was supposed to be the coronation of Fast Draw, who had been the talk of the barn and went off as the odds-on favorite, Zion stole the headlines. While Fast Draw dueled with Rocket Rocket on the lead, Zion sat off the pace and then came flying past the pacesetters.

Working July 6 at Churchill Downs was Ocean Colors (Orientate - Winning Colors) who went 5 furlongs in 1:02.40.
