The Triumph of Curly; Renda first winner for Medaglia d'Oro

Curly came out of the gate nicely and settled in third, much closer to the pace than usual. Meanwhile, Tiz Clever and Four Rivers sprinted ahead of the field and dueled through the first 6 furlongs (setting fractions of :23.87, :47.20, and 1:12.61. Curly secured a spot on the rail and was able to save ground, a definite change from his last start. On the turn, a gap appeared on the inside and Curly jetted through, leaving the field behind. More Than Able and B K Winks both rallied to grab 2nd and 3rd, but they were no threat to the winner. Calzone mounted a bit of a rally, but couldn't sustain it and ended up fourth. The pace-setters tired to finish 5th and 7th.

All I have to say is watch out Curlin, Curly is on the rise!

Renda Delivers, First Winner for Medaglia d'Oro

Just as Curly was breaking from the gate at Arlington, Renda was making her debut at Calder. As is often the case in these 2-year old sprints, the first horse out of the gate won. But for a change, it was one of ours.  Renda did not have an easy lead out there, however, as she was joined by Chatter Wine. She finally put that one away and drew away to an impressive 5 length win. Tailbytherail, the Read the Footnotes' debut runner, closed a little greenly to claim second. Read more about Renda here.

This race also features the Birdstone filly, Aerin She Lovely, who ran fairly evenly to take fifth.

Birdcaper needs a Do-Over

Our first starter of the day was the Birdstone colt, Birdcaper. Watching this race, I thought Birdcaper was less than impressive as he ran 6th the whole way round. However, after reading the chart, I saw that his saddle slipped, so this most probably contributed to his performance and left his connections wishing for a do-over.

The winner in the race, D. C.'s Legacy, is the first winner for first-year sire Mr. Livingston

Curly Is More Than Able To Cross Four Rivers

Although the race is carded for 3 and up, all the entries are three-year olds. Some familiar faces in this one, as Curly (Gulch - Fount by Kris S.), More Than Able (More Than Ready - Countus Affair by Black Tie Affair (IRE)), and Calzone (A. P. Another entry, Tiz Clever (Tiznow - Eliot Chacer by Clever Trick) was entered on May 3, but was scratched.

This is our boy Curly's third start and continued improvement should see him in the Winner's Circle.  However, he does need some speed to setup his late kick.

Calzone is the veteran of the race, having started 5 times, once as a 2-year old and 4 times this year. His best finish was the fifth achieved in his most recent start.  His dam, Corrazona, earned $518,218 including victory in the Beverly Hills (gr. I).
