Beans and Peace Floating On Air

Proud Jefe too Precious for Beans

Proud Jefe went right to the lead in this one, but was soon joined by Precious Beans who mounted a stout challenge on the turn. However, Proud Jefe repulsed that challenge. Cognito came between the two of them to grab second. Precious Beans had to settle for third again.

Mostly Peace, who was the even-money favorite, vaulted to the lead in this one, but was soon joined by Goldwrapinsilver. Those two took turns leading, but were no match for Lady Fortune who won by 4 despite drifting out. Mostly Peace did do well to hold second over the rest of the pack. By the way, Mostly Peace was claimed out of the race and will now be trained by R. Glen Mathieson, Jr.

Cassie hits the Mark in the Air

Floating On Air came out of the gate running, but was hounded by Keon.  Those two were locked together until the stretch where Floating On Air showed a reluctance to switch leads and tired. Meanwhile, Cassie's Mark, who had been tracking the pacesetters in third, went wide and passed them both. Be So Special also closed well for 2nd. See Eye to Eye ran a good race to finish 6th, as he spotted the field 3 or 4 lengths at the break.

Long Live Dixie Pacified; Beans Mostly Floating

Congratulations to Even the Score whose first winner, Enjoy the Score won at Louisiana Downs today. Even the Score has had 7 runners who have made 12 starts.  In addition to Enjoy the Score's victory, his offspring have recorded 3 seconds and 2 thirds and they have earned a total of $32,740.

Peggy's Hope Scores Over Dixie

The race was delayed a bit when Wild Appeal flipped behind the starting gate and was a late scratch. Those already in the gate were backed out. Not sure if this delay had any affect on the horses. Long Live Dixie came out of the gate well and was rushed up with the early leaders, Tiger's Mischief and Poetic Lana. She vied between those two for a bit before checking and falling back steadily to end up last. Tiger's Mischief and Poetic Lana wilted as well, ending up 4th and 5th respectively. This race belonged to the closers of which Peggy's Hope proved best.

Quebec City looked home free in this one, but Hoya kept coming and coming and final wore that rival down. Pacificator came out of the gate nicely, but was soon 9 lengths off of the leaders. However, once he settled, he began to pick off his rivals, despite going 4 wide, and ended up a credible fifth. Looks like a promising beginning for this one.

Rachel and Silk Hope to be Best Lass on the Smokin Bayou

The Cinderella runner, Makasi, proved much the best in this one. She took the lead soon after the start and then drew off to win by 5. The biggest surprise to me is that she didn't get claimed out of the race. Felice the Cat ran a nice race and was clearly the best of the rest. Chatty Lulu was the clear winner in the battle of the Chatties. Floating on Air was in good position, but failed to make much of an impact on the race and ended up 5th.

Floating On Air Makes New Connections

Floating On Air (Peace Rules - Charmie's Secret by Secret Hello) makes her first start for her new connections, having been claimed out of her debut by Doug O'Neill. Doug O'Neill was persuaded to claim this Peace Rules' offspring after observing the talent of his Peace Rules' filly, stakes winner Trifecta King. Floating On Air showed speed in her first start before tiring to end up 7th, so hopefully that experience will help her here. Floating On Air is the first foal out of a mare who earned $56,445 and placed in the Hildene Stakes as a 2-year old. She is also a half-sister to 4 winners, 2 of which won during their 2-year old seasons.

Finishing 6th in Floating On Air's debut on April 30 was Chatty Lulu (Rio Verde - Tudeludelu by Swiss Yodeler). That race was Chatty Lulu's third (she had previously finished 2nd and 4th in 2 furlong races). Since that race, Chatty Lulu finished 3rd on May 14 in a 4.5 furlong Maiden Claiming contest. Chatty Lulu's dam is a half-sister to 4 winners.  She is also a half-sister to Chattie Katie (Rio Verde - Reconquista by Saros (GB) who is also entered in today's race. Chattie Katie has had one start, finishing 6th in a Maiden Claiming race at 4.5 furlongs on May 21. Chattie Katie's dam, Reconquista, was a stakes winner who earned $92,000 including a victory in the Generous Portion Stakes as a 2-year old.

Chatty Lulu's May 14 race also included Dollabeeratcoaches (Impeachment - She's Booked by Notebook) who finished 9th and Virginia Girl (Lost Soldier - Virginia Miss by Mr. Greeley) who was 10th. Dollabeeratcoaches is the first foal out of a winning mare who is a half-sister to grade III stakes winner Royal Place who earned $428,837 and the stakes winner Always Royal who is by Impeachment, sire of Dollabeeratcoaches. The dam of Virginia Girl, Virginia Miss, earned $116,375. Virginia Girl is her first foal. Virginia Miss is a half-sister to 4 winners.

The only other experienced horse in the race is Makasi (Indian Charlie -  Floral Bounty by Pirate's Bounty) who shares her broodmare sire with Belmont winner, Da' Tara. Makasi finished 3rd in a Maiden Special Weight race at 4.5 furlong on April 30 and then 5th in the Cinderella on May 25 behind Trifecta King. I am a little curious why they would drop this one into the claiming ranks. Makasi is out of a winning mare and is a half-sister to 3 winners.

Lady Schnapps  (Milwaukee Brew - Golden Ballerina by Touch Gold) brought $25,000 as a yearling. Her dam is a half-sister to 2 winners.

The dam of My Dixie Belle (Muqtarib - C. C. Overdrive by Dixieland Band) earned $114,675 including 2 wins and 2 seconds in 4 2-year old starts. She has produced 5 winners including 2 full-sisters to My Dixie Belle.

Felice the Cat (Distinctive Cat - Kering One by Kennedy Road) is a half-sister to 4 winners including the stakes winner, Shanghai Joe.

Monica's Edge (Definite Edge - Santa Monica (PER) by Destinado (PER)) is out of a mare who was a stakes winner in Peru and stakes-placed in the United States. She was also 3 for 3 as a 2-year old. Monica's Edge is a half-sister to 2 winners.

Floating On Air Shows Speed; A Rose Sings

Floating On Air did something that none of our other horses have.  No, she didn't win, she didn't even hit the board, but she showed speed and actually took the lead out of the gate.  Unfortunately, this was not one of those 2-year old races where the first out of the gate wins. Floating on Air also got claimed out of the race and will now be trained by Doug O'Neill. The entry of Call Aly and Chatty Lulu went off at even money, but Call Aly couldn't catch Upper Manhattan who was much the best.  Much the best, even though the margin of victory was only a length.  Because once Upper Manhattan hit the lead, she veered out (in response to a left-handed whip) and then back in.  A straight course would have resulted in a much wider margin.

Singing Rose (filly; Congaree - Dial a Song by Mining) is out of a stakes-winning dam who earned $148,855.  She did not race as a 2-year old, but she did win her 3-year old debut. She has produced one winner. Interestingly, we also received notice of a workout for Singing Rose today, working 3 furlongs at Churchill Downs in 36:80.

The first-year sire Cuvee has two offspring in the race, Star of War (Cuvee - Miss Awesome by Awesome Again) and Champagne Launch (Cuvee - Launch a Double by Bright Launch).  Star of War is a half-sister to one winner.  Champagne Launch, who sold for $130,000 as a yearling, is out of the stakes winning mare, Launch a Double. Launch a Double won the Prairie Gold Lassie Stakes as a 2-year old. Launch a Double is the dam of the stakes winner Double Colico.

The best sales credentials in the race are held by Ride On Josephine (Johannesburg - Running Debate by Open Forum) who sold for $375,000 as a yearling.  Ride On Josephine's dam won or placed in 7 stakes (4 as a 2-year old).  She also broke her maiden in her debut.

The dam of Simplify (Pulpit - Classic Olympio by Olympio) won or placed in eight stakes races and earned $336,578 in her career including $155,905 as a 2-year old. Simplify is a half-sister to Classify, a stakes winner who was earned $125,710 through 2008. Most recently, she finished third in the Carousel Stakes on March 29.

Missy Lou (Yonaguska - Hard Freeze by It's Freezing), who sold for $95,000 as a yearling, is out of mare who earned $255,061 including a 2nd in the Debutante as a 2-year old. She also broke her maiden in her debut.  Missy Lou is a half-sister to 7 winners and a full-sister to the winner Honest to Betsy who finished 4th in the Adirondack (gr. II) as a 2-year old. Missy Lou is also a half-sister to one of my favorite horses of all time, Mr. Freeze, who earned $143,821 in a 53 race career.  But, that's another story.

Results for Precious Beans; Floating on Air Preview

Precious Beans was off a step slow, but soon got into the race.  He made a bit of a move and then ran pretty evenly, but was no threat to the top finishers.  (I liked the note that he received in the chart, "threatened.") The winner was the Songandaprayer colt, Bee Cee Cee.  This was not surprising, as the Songandaprayers are quick out of the gate.

From the limited sample I've seen so far, it looks like the Medaglia d'Oros can run, but I'm not sure any of them will win at 4.5 furlongs.  Victory may have to wait for more distance.  This is hardly a revelation.  Medaglia d'Oro himself didn't run until December of his 2-year old season and didn't win until his first start as a 3-year old (in February). However, in his next start, he won the San Felipe (gr. II) and from then on faced only graded stakes company.

Floating On Air (Peace Rules - Charmie's Secret by Secret Hello) is the first foal out of a mare who earned $56,445 and placed in the Hildene Stakes as a 2-year old. She is also a half-sister to 4 winners, 2 of which won during their 2-year old seasons.

The only other first-year sire represented in this race is Scrimshaw, the sire of Ravin Maniac (Scrimshaw - Radcliffe Yard by Boston Harbor).  Ravin Maniac sold for $65,000 as a yearling. Her dam, Radcliffe Yard, earned $106,653 in a career that included a first, a second, and a third in three 2-year old starts.  Scrimshaw was a grade III winner who earned $461,842.  He was also 2 for 2 as a 2-year old.

3 of participants have raced before. Call Aly (Nineeleven - Catchthecat by Crafty Prospector) has run 3 times at 2 furlongs at Santa Anita, finishing 2nd twice.  Her most recent start was a 2nd on April 17.   Call Aly is a half- or full-sister to 3 winners, 2 of which were 2-year old winners. Chatty Lulu (Rio Verde -  Tudeludelu by Swiss Yodeler) has run twice, finishing 2nd in her first start and 4th on April 11.  Both of these starts were at 2 furlongs. I Catherine (Swish Yodeler - Treatmelikealady by Distinctive Pro) finished 4th in her first start and 3rd on April 3, both at 2 furlongs.

Swiss Yodeler is a key name in California baby races, especially at less than 6 furlongs.  It seems like his offspring win about 90% of them. In addition to being the sire of I Catherine and the broodmare sire of Chatty Lulu, he is also the sire of Monte Rosa (Swiss Yodeler - Cryptoscript by Crytoclearance). I find the breeding of the latter to be pretty interesting, looks like an attempt to put some stamina into the family.

I think we all will be getting to know Mr Mistoffelees.  He made his $1.5 million sale price look like a bargain, drawing off to win by 9 1/4 lengths. 9 1/4 lengths in a 4.5 furlong race? Not bad, not bad at all. Chapel Run was a bit erratic, but showed some grit and ended up second (the way the Chapel Royals have been running, the biggest mystery was how Chapel Run went off at 37-1). Interestingly, the experienced runner, Regardlesofoutcome, finished 3rd once again. Tripp to Hedo showed some speed, but got a little tired. Our boy, Medaglia d'Onore, ran pretty evenly to take 6th. I was encouraged that he broke well and seemed to be in the race from the beginning.  Fradiablo was pulled up, but he walked off on his own power and seemed to be ok. Meetmeatthechapel and Wallstreetgold were scratched.

He Run Away and Hid from Tiger Rules

Tiger Rules: Photo Credit Adam Spradling
Tiger Rules after the race. Hardly looks like he ran. Nice   tongue, however. Photo by Adam Spradling

We were late getting over to the track and it was Friday, so it was pretty crowded around the paddock.  Still, it didn't matter as Tiger Rules, like Mostly Peace on Wednesday, was a late arrival.  I have not been paying close enough attention to see if this is the usual practice for Steve Asmussen (who trains both of these Peace Rules offspring) with 2-year olds or if it has something to do with the Peace Rules temperament. I did notice today that Asmussen's other entrant in this race (Broadway Al) was also being kept away from the crowd.  Tiger Rules finally emerged revealing a long lean bay body, not quite as leggy as Mostly Peace, but with a similar narrow head.

As with many 2-year old races, this one was over at the break when Run Away and Hide lived up to his name and scampered away.  Tiger Rules was ninth the whole way round, but hopefully learned something about how the game goes. The other first-year sire offspring fared better, running 2nd (Silent Valor by Lion Heart), 3rd (Broadway Al by Alke), 4th (Screen Your Friend by Friends Lake), and 5th (Cape Royale by Chapel Royal). The Cliff's Edge colt (Mount Hope) was scratched.

The Smarty Jones' colt Keefer was on track at Churchill Downs on 4/18, working 3 furlongs in :39.60. Keefer is out of the Seattle Slew mare, Shootforthestars. Shootforthestars was unraced, but she has produced 3 winners including the stakes-placed Golden Rainbow who has earned $248,610 through 2008. Golden Rainbow was never off the board in 6 starts as a 2-year old.

Also working at Churchill and recording the same time of :39.60 for 3 furlongs on 4/18 was Justin (colt; Speightstown - Love at Noon by Afternoon Deelites). Justin's dam earned $132,675 including seconds in the Princess (gr. II) and Dogwood (gr. II) and a third in the La Brea (gr. I).  However, she did not start as a 2-year old. She has produced one winner who has earned $29,690 through 2008.

At Santa Anita, the Speightstown filly Mighty Pleasing worked 1 furlong in :11.80 on 4/18.  Mighty Pleasing is out of the Falstaff mare, Pleasing. Might Pleasing is a half-sister to 3 winners, among them the grade III winner Excessivepleasure who was 2 for 2 as a 2-year old including a victory in the California Breeders' Champion Stakes.

Two Peace Rules fillies worked on opposite ends of the country on 4/18.  Long Live Dixie (Peace Rules - Crafty Brat by Lucky Lionel) went 3 furlongs in :37.00 at Laurel. Her dam, Crafty Brat, was a stakes winner who earned $239,749.  As a 2-year old, Crafty Brat started 9 times, finishing 1st twice and 2nd three times.  Long Live Dixie is her first foal. At Santa Anita, Floating On Air (Peace Rules - Charmie's Secret by Secret Hello) recorded a time of 1:03.00 for 5 furlongs. Floating On Air is the first foal out of a stakes-placed mare who finished 2nd in the Hildene as a 2-year old.

Alexabella, a Congaree filly out of the With Approval mare, Diane's Birthday, worked 3 furlongs at Keeneland recording a nice time of :35.40.  Out of the stakes  winning dam Diane's Birthday, Alexabella is a half-sister to 3 winners, 2 of which won during their 2-year old season.
