Favored in the field is Winning Colors' daughter, Ocean Colors (Orientate - Winning Colors by Caro (IRE)) who broke her maiden in her only start on June 13 at Churchill Downs.

Other runners familiar to Maiden Watch readers include Jardin (Montbrook - Unlimited Pleasure by Valid Appeal), a winner in her only start on June 24, Cameron Crazies (Lion Heart - D Hail Mary by Defensive Play), a winner in one of three starts who was 6th in the Debuante, and Girlfrienontheside (Indian Charlie - Refrain by Unbridled's Song) who broke her maiden on June 3 and finished 2nd in the Astoria (9 lengths behind the winner) on June 29.

The field features one maiden, Mine All Mine (Belong to Me - Pulcinella by Unbridled), who has also been entered in a Maiden race at Saratoga on July 24. Mine All Mine has started 3 times, recording 1 second. She also finished 6th in the Ketucky Stakes against the boys.

Light Green Goes Softly; Tiger is Lawless

Softly Spoken Overtakes Light Green

To the surprise of many (including Tom Durkin who called her by her stablemate's name first call), Light Green went right to the lead. She was soon headed by the experienced one, Softly Spoken. But, Light Green refused to give in and fought on gamely to come up just a head short. She may have been aided a bit by Softly Spoken who bore in slightly, as if she was trying to bite Light Green. Casanova Move, stablemate to Light Green, also ran a good race, closing in on the leaders at the finish.

The Tiger is Too Much for The Law

The Law horses (I'm the Law, Cop Beat, and Top Cop) finished together. But it wasn't exactly the trifecta, as they finished 7th, 8th, and 9th respectively. Tiger Shark went right to the lead, pursued by Mr Missile, Silent Count, and Premo's Success. But, Tiger Shark was too much for the gang and drew off. Mr. Missile ran on for second, while Admirals Mountain closed wide for the show spot. I'm the Law didn't have much impact on the race. He came out of the gate ok and seemed to settle, but only passed a couple of tired ones. A number of horses were a bit wild in the post parade, especially Silent Count and Fujiamo.

Just Four to Go for Curly

Like many twinspires.com customers, I was shut out of the Derby.  In fact, I tried to login so many times that I disabled my login.  I called immediately after the race, not to complain about the service, but to reinstate my account.  "I need to bet the 12th at Arlington."  Luckily, this was easily done.

If you didn't have a chance to watch Curly's race live or via replay, I would encourage you to take a look.  It was a very enjoyable race. As in his first start, Curly was severely lacking early speed.  In fact, for much of the race, he wasn't in the picture.  Instead, his old buddy, Stirrup Excitment set the early pace. Finally, he started coming as they came into the final turn ("now here comes Curly"). But, he was pushed wide, wide, wider than Big Brown in the Derby (officially 7 wide).  Amazingly, Curly kept coming and coming.  Meanwhile Four to Go was closing too, but he had the rail and less distance to travel.  At the wire, it was Four to Go by a head.  Sure it was a very fast pace that set up for a closer, but Curly looked like a real racehorse out there. By the way, I did have the exacta in Curly's race, hopefully I wasn't the only one.

It was all about the girls at Woodbine, as fillies took the first three spots.  This is not an uncommon phenomenon in baby races, as fillies, like human girls vs. boys, mature faster than colts. As is the case with many 2-year old races, especially those at short distances, first one out of the gate won.  Katolak Cowboy was 7th all the way.  But, all the horses picked up a check in this one, so he earned $398.
