No Party for Gold Aly

Captain Steel Over Party Hard

Captain Steel went to the lead, closely pursued by Party Hard and Fiery Rebel. Party Hard made a move on the turn and looked for a moment like he would go by Captain Steel, but that one had something left and drew off.  At the wire, Captain Steel was more than 7 in front. Party Hard tired after his effort and Fiery Rebel took second, but Party Hard was clear in third.

The Lion Takes the Gold

As with the previous race, the experienced horse took the bettors money and delivered, but the means were a little different. The Bat Signal took the early lead in this one, pursued by Mr. Rod and I Want Revenge. Candy Lion was not far behind, watching the first-timers expending their energy. Meanwhile, Gold Aly was in a good position, in a middle spot, all by himself. Candy Lion made a move on the rail in the stretch and pulled away despite drifting out. Blazing Spirit closed from nowhere to take second. Gold Aly passed some tired ones, to end up 5th. Since these two maiden races were under the same conditions at Hollywood Park, just a short time apart, it's natural to compare the two. Captain Steel's time was quicker, but personally I was more impressed with Candy Lion, since he had to overcome more and his drifting probably affected the time. Both Party Hard and Gold Aly ran credible races. Gold Aly, who looked wonderful in the post parade, definitely looks like one who wants more distance.

I think we all will be getting to know Mr Mistoffelees.  He made his $1.5 million sale price look like a bargain, drawing off to win by 9 1/4 lengths. 9 1/4 lengths in a 4.5 furlong race? Not bad, not bad at all. Chapel Run was a bit erratic, but showed some grit and ended up second (the way the Chapel Royals have been running, the biggest mystery was how Chapel Run went off at 37-1). Interestingly, the experienced runner, Regardlesofoutcome, finished 3rd once again. Tripp to Hedo showed some speed, but got a little tired. Our boy, Medaglia d'Onore, ran pretty evenly to take 6th. I was encouraged that he broke well and seemed to be in the race from the beginning.  Fradiablo was pulled up, but he walked off on his own power and seemed to be ok. Meetmeatthechapel and Wallstreetgold were scratched.
