Will Saratoga Be Special For Maiden Watch?

Maiden Watch horses Dueling Alex (Medaglia d'Oro), Reynaldothewizard (Speightstown), and Medaglia d'Onore (Medagia d'Oro) make up 1/3 of the Saratoga Special field. Also, results for River Fancy (Congaree), Second Glance (Smarty Jones), and Penching Pennies (Peace Rules) and entries for Tbilisi (Birdstone), Persian (Peace Rules), Sugaree Gold (Congaree), and an allowance try for Peace Town (Peace Rules).

Silver Reunion Takes a Fancy

First of all, the race was taken off the turf and run at 7 furlongs on the main track. This resulted in the scratching of Americas Dreaming, Dynaslew, Palmeto Princess, Platinum Girl, and Warm Shower. Total Joy was fractious in the post parade and dumped her rider. But, she didn't go far and Jeffrey Sanchez got back aboard. River Fancy (Congaree) was also a bit rambunctious in the post parade, but her rider stayed on. At the break, Ain't Love Grand took the lead, but she was closely pursued by Jehan and River Fancy. River Fancy seemed poised to make a move, but she tired and ended up fourth. Jehan briefly took the lead, but Silver Reunion bullied her way through to take the race by a good 3 lengths.

Miss Charms at Second Glance

Second Glance (Smarty Jones) came out of the gate and smacked into East Leestown, effectively taking that one out of the race. On the other hand, Second Glance went right to the lead. Unfortunately, she didn't last long, tiring as Miss Charm City took over. Miss Charm City drove clear to become the 2nd winner for Bowman's Band. Hannah's Dowery closed well for second, while Truck Ride, who was always near the front, settled for third.

One-third of the horses in the Saratoga Special are Maiden Watch horses, as Dueling Alex (Medaglia d'Oro - Rosie Dooley by Trempolino) and Reynaldothewizard (Speightstown - Holiday Runner by Meadowlake) try stakes company for the first time and Medaglia d'Onore (Medaglia d'Oro - Always Ready by Dixieland Band) returns to stakes company after finishing 5th in the Bashford Manor (gr. III) on July 5. In that race, he made a big move on the turn, but couldn't sustain it. Medaglia d'Onore had previously finished 6th on April 24 and 4th on May 26, before breaking his maiden on June 19. Medaglia d'Onore has had one work at Saratoga. Medaglia d'Oro has had one stakes-placed runner, Rachel Alexandra, who finished 2nd in the Debutante Stakes (gr. III).

Reynaldothewizard and Dueling Alex both broke their maidens in their debuts, Reynaldothewizard on July 2 and Dueling Alex on July 6. Neither horse has run since their maiden victory, but both have been working regularly, Reynaldothewizard primarily at Saratoga and Dueling Alex at Monmouth. Speightstown has had one stakes performer, Lord Shanakill who is group II stakes-placed in England.

Favoritism in the race will probably be between Run Away and Hide (City Zip - Jilted by Runaway Groom) who won the Kentucky Stakes (gr. III) on May 1 (after breaking his maiden on April 18) and Lyin' Heart (Lion Heart - Rumba Punch by Green Dancer) who finished 2nd in the Bashford Manor (gr. In addition to Lyin' Heart, freshman sire Lion Heart has sired multiple-stakes winner Azul Leon and stakes-placed runners Bear's Rocket, Cameron Crazies, and Pretty Prolific.

Another stakes winner in the race is Proud Jefe (Proud Citizen - Besige by Polish Numbers) who won the Brian Barenscheer Juvenile Stakes on July 20, after breaking his maiden on June 27 at Churchill Downs.

Break Water Edison (Lemon Drop Kid - August Storm by Storm Creek) and Unsung Song (Unbridled's Song - Sisti's Pride by Forestry) were winners in their only starts. Break Water Edison broke his maiden at Belmont Park on July 17, going gate-to-wire. Unsung Song did his running at Presque Isle Downs on July 26.

Join in the Dance (Sky Mesa - Dance Darling by Devil's Bag) broke his maiden in his third start on July 25 at Saratoga. Previously, he had finished 2nd twice both at Arlington Park and Churchill Downs.

Penching Pennies (Peace Rules - Gayle's Glory by Sword Dance (IRE)) returns after running 11th (and last) on August 2, less than 2 weeks ago. This quick turnaround indicates to me that he didn't really run much first time out and should show improvement here. Gayle's Glory, the dam of Penching Pennies, won 13 races and $304,935 in her career including 2 victories as a 2-year old. She has produced one winner (who won as a 2-year old) from two to race. Peace Rules has had 22 runners which have made 48 total starts, recording 11 wins, 5 seconds, 6 thirds, and $239,748.

Ryser (Roar of the Tiger - Valid Belle by Valid Appeal), by first-year sire Roar of the Tiger, finished 3rd in his only start on May 30 at Evangeline Downs. Roar of the Tiger's 21 runners have made 50 collective starts, recording 10 wins, 10 seconds, 9 thirds, and $254,771. Also finishing 6th in his only start was Tastyfromthegitgo (Easyfromthegitgo - Tasty Lace by Langfuhr), who ran on July 4 at Evangeline Downs. Tastyfromthegitgo is out of a winning mare who has produced one winner from two to run.

Premier Crisis (Out of the Crisis - Lady Premier by Premiership) was 10th in his lone start on July 30 at Evangeline Downs. Lady Premier, the dam of Premier Crisis, was a winner at 2 and has produced the 2-year old winner, Bonzaway. Bonzaway has earned $49,780 through 2008.

The field is completed by three horses making their debuts, including Osceola Kiss (Roger That - A Kismet Story by Crafty Dude) by first-year sire Roger That. Roger That has had one runner, Lady Eugenie. Lady Eugenie broke her maiden in her 2nd start. Osceola Kiss is the first foal out of a winning mare who is a half- or full-sister to 2 winners.

Even though this is an open race, Ontario-bred Silver Aldebaran (Aldebaran - Marvellous Silver by Silver Deputy) is the only one bred outside of Louisiana. Stakes winner Marvellous Silver, the dam of Aldebaran, was also stakes-placed at 2 and earned $100,239 in her career. Marvellous Silver has produced one winner, Sister Silver, who has earned $63,535 through 2008.

Min d'Oro Looking for More

First, I want to apologize for not previewing Mullins Beach's (Speightstown) August 2 race. For some reason, I did not receive advanced email notification. Luckily, I did receive race day notification, so I was able to catch the race. The result is below. I also did not get notification of L. A. Rules' (Peace Rules) entry at Woodbine on August 2. But, he was a scratch.

It's Min d'Oro's Day in Splendor

This one was eventful even before they got in the gate. First, Breezing By was a late scratch. Then, Really Wonder, who had already gotten a rider change, dumped her rider and took off. She headed back to the barn, so was scratched as well. Plus, Min d'Oro (Medaglia d'Oro) did not want to load and the gate crew had to spend several minutes persuading her. However, last in was first out, as Min d'Oro took right to the lead at the break. She was closely attended by favorite, It's a Frances Day, but soon shook free of that one. In the end, Min d'Oro increased her lead while under a snug hold to break her maiden with ease. It's always nice to start out a day of racing with a win.

Karma over the Beach

Mullins Beach (Speightstown) was off well and in mid-pack in the early going. Up front, Essence of Silver went to the lead, but was closely pursued by C Karma. C Karma continued to pressure and finally went by in the stretch, without much urging. Essence of Silver tried hard, but couldn't keep up. Meanwhile, Mullins Beach was closing nicely to finish third in her debut.

The field was reduced to 6 with the scratch of Sligovian Bay and the late scratch of Safety Squeeze. War Lap Breaks With Tradition

Conflicting Report was reluctant to load, but was the first one out, with Sky Taps keeping him company and Takamosa close behind. Longshot Saxxy Rose Lee went to the lead along with Illegal Search. Those two were soon joined by Cha Ching Jackpot who looked like she would go on by. However, Saxxy Rose Lee prevailed by a neck. Verdant (Pleasantly Perfect) stumbled at the start, but found a clear spot behind the first pack. She made up some good ground late on the outside, but couldn't catch the leaders. Believe in Gold Aly

At the break, Azooz came out slowly and then ducked in severely to remove himself from contention. Launch the Bull went to the lead, stalked by Gato Go Win. Those two set some ambitious fractions which seemed to set it up for a closer. And, close they did. Believe in Hope got the jump, and took the lead in the stretch. At that point, Gold Aly (Medaglia d'Oro) was still 8th. He came running, but was spun way wide and could get no closer than a length behind Believe in Hope. Following a similar path was Fiery Rebel, who rallied for third. The top three all look colts with good futures. I am really looking forward to seeing Gold Aly stretch out.
