River Fancy will Live the Dash for the Law

Not a bad day for Maiden Watch, no winners, but decent efforts all around. Longandstrong (Birdstone) was a scratch at Monmouth Park.

An update on Dance the Cha Cha, who bolted on Monday and ran through the barn area at Thistledown. According to the racing department at Thistledown, he suffered nothing more than a few cuts and bruises. The jockey, Ernesto Oro, was also unhurt. I would expect, however, that Dance the Cha Cha may get some schooling before his next outing.

High Cry All the Way; Saarlandisourland not Disgraced

High Cry was the best looking horse in the paddock and she ran like it, going to the lead and keeping it. However, she was all out to hold off Dancing Daisy, who closed well to end up just a nod of the head behind. Freedom Rings also closed well for third. Saarlandisourland (Saarland) broke with the leaders way on the outside. She fell back later, but ran evenly to place 5th. She definitely showed more on the turf than her previous dirt attempts.

Selva Outguns Gemswick Park

The rains came in full force before this one, turning the course into slop. The beginning of the race was a bit of a puzzle, since I thought Gemswick Park (Speightstown) was up with the leaders, but I was watching with the sound off and the numbers on the screen did not compute. After unmuting the volume, Tom Durkin confirmed my thoughts, it was indeed Gemswick Park chasing Selva, who had taken the lead at the start. They stayed that way all the way round. Favored Justwhistledixie closed a bit to take third, but there mostly was no change of position in this big field. The biggest mystery was how the John Velazquez-ridden, Tom Albertrani-trained Gemswick Park went off at 42-1. I'm not complaining, I had $2 across on her.

Ravin Maniac took the lead soon after the start, with Truly Lucky pressing the pace. Quite the Lady (Pleasantly Perfect) was bumped at the start and settled on the rail. She came rolling on the outside in the stretch, but couldn't catch Ravin Maniac. She flattened out late and lost the place spot to Pride.

None of the horses in the main body of the race have turf experience (although two of the AEs do). However, it's raining today in Saratoga, so we'll see if this one stays on the turf. If it's moved to the main track, it will be run at 7 furlongs.

Silver Reunion's dam, Silver Comic, won the Mrs. Revere Stakes (gr. IIT) on the turf and earned $216,935 in her career. Silver Comic is also a half-sister to group III winner Lucayan Prince, and grade III stakes winner Comic Strip.

The remaining horses in the main body of the field are making their debuts, including Carioca (The Cliff's Edge - She's Never Wrong by Nureyev) by first-crop sire The Cliff's Edge. The Cliff's Edge is the sire of 15 runners who have made 33 total starts, recording 3 wins, 3 seconds, 3 thirds, and $86,069. Carioca is the first foal out of an unraced mare, who is a half-sister to one winner.

Top selling among all the horses is Warm Shower (Dynaformer - Caught in the Rain by Petionville) who sold for $700,000 as a yearling. Warm Shower is the first foal out of Caught in the Rain who won the Mrs. Revere Stakes (gr. IIT) and the Athenia Handicap (gr. IIIT), both on the turf. In her career, Caught in the Rain earned $455,034 and won or placed in 9 stakes on the turf and on the dirt.

Triumph for Evita, Trifecta King Checked

Cosmic Queen, Dash Dot Dash, Trifecta King, Emmy Darling, and Glitter City were all up on the early pace. On the turn, Trifecta King checked hard and was forced all the way back to last. That was end of story as far as this race was concerned for her, but she finished the race ok. Cosmic Queen also tired after a half. This left Glitter City and Emmy Darling on the lead. However, both Evita Argentina and Stardom Bound (who was off slow yet again) were coming.Iin the end, Evita prevailed by a length to become the first stakes winner for freshman sire Candy Ride. Yes, she is Quite a Lady

Divine Design took most of the bettors' money and she did pop out of the gate first, but she was soon joined by Star of War. Quite the Lady was back a bit early, but she came rolling on the outside to win by 3 widening lengths. Our old friend Star of War ran along for second, while the favorite had to settle for third. This was a rather impressive victory for Quite the Lady as she records the first win for Pleasantly Perfect as a sire.  She looks to be the real deal. Not bad stats for papa Pleasantly Perfect either: 2 starters, 1 win, 1 2nd.

The Essence of Himynameissarah

Bridal Essence and Payton's Drama broke on top and dueled for much of the race. As they neared the wire, Bridal Essence put Payton's Drama away to win by clear lengths. Himynameissarah (surely her barn name must be just Sarah) came out in good order and stalked the top pair. She made a little bit of a move and got close, but she didn't really threaten them. However, she was clear of the rest of the field. Overall, it was a promising debut for Himynameissarah.
