Stone Success

Both S. S. Stone and Speight the Halo broke well and sat right behind the leaders, Del Conte and Say it Again. Speight the Halo, benefiting from his outside post, cruised to the front in the stretch. On the other hand, S. S. Stone was stuck amongst horses. But, he showed a lot of tenacity and fought his way through the crowd to join Speight the Halo. The two Maiden Watch horses battled well clear of the rest of the pack, until S. S. Stone surged forward past the tiring Speight the Halo to become the first winner for Birdstone. Street Hero, who was off slow and was near the back for most of the race, closed well to pick up third.

I hope that I wasn't the only one who had the Maiden Watch exacta which paid $102.70 for a dollar.

Congratulations to Read the Footnotes whose first winner, Sapphire Prince, won June 26 at Great Leighs.

The Winning Pick

Stamen went to the lead out of the gate, but Pick's Express cruised up to the front from the outside and left that one behind. He did tire a bit late, but had more than enough to hold off Ambuscader who closed well for 2nd. Stamen hung around for third. Our other runner, Frosty Diamond, was scratched. With this victory, Pick's Express becomes the first U.S. winner for Speightstown.

Rachel and Renda Debutantes

Renda was off a bit slow in this one, she was back in the pack in the early going. On the other hand, Rachel Alexandra was up with the pace setters who were Cameron Crazies and the favorite, Garden District. Renda made a big 6 wide move on the turn and looked for a moment like she would go by everyone, but she couldn't sustain the bid and ended up 5th. Meanwhile, Cameron Crazies had tired up front and gave way to Garden District. Rachel Alexandra was a bit green, but she dug down and won the battle for second over Simplify, and even made things interesting for Garden District. However, that one prevailed by about a half of a length. Read more about the Debutante here

Renda, Rachel, and Trifecta King; Maiden Watch Hits the Stakes

I have been debating how to treat races featuring Maiden Watch "graduates." Since they are no longer maidens, do they belong in this space? Plus, the type of analysis that I do is more appropriate for unraced and lightly raced horses where there is little or no past performance information. It is not as valuable in a race where everyone is a winner. On the other hand, I don't want to abandon them once they have won. So, I have decided that I will still discuss subsequent starts after a maiden win, but in a more summarily format rather than a detailed look at all the entries. The focus will be on the Maiden Watch horses. This may need some tweaking along the way. Please feel free to chime in with suggestions.

The Debutante Stakes at Churchill Downs June 28 features two Maiden Watch graduates, Rachel Alexandra (Medaglia d'Oro - Lotta Kim by Roar) and Renda (Medaglia d'Oro - Ten Carats by Capote). Rachel Alexandra finished 6th her first time out on May 22 (behind Debutante opponent, Songtress) and then broke her maiden in impressive fashion on June 13. Rachel Alexandra is the first foal out of the stakes winner, Lotta Kim, who earned $146,485. Renda was a debut winner and the first winner for her sire on May 31 where she drew off by 5. Renda is the 2nd foal out of the stakes-placed mare, Ten Carats. Ten Carats earned $131,855 and was also a debut winner at 2. Her first foal is a winner who earned $52,085. According to the Churchill Downs Barn Notes, Renda is Portuguese for wealth and is pronounced, "Enda."

In addition to Songtress' victory on May 22, Cameron Crazies maiden win was also profiled on Maiden Watch. The favorite in the Debutante is Garden District, who followed up her maiden victory with a 2nd place finish in the Kentucky Stakes (gr. II). None of the other participants have stakes experience. If fact, none of the other horses have run in anything other than a Maiden race.

Rachel is the Best Lass; Silk Third

Rachel Alexandra jumped out of the gate and went right to the lead. Favorite Best Lass emerged from the pack and attempted to run our filly down, but Rachel showed some guts and refused to let that one by. At the end, she was pulling away and won by over a length. Meanwhile, C. S. Silk was squeezed at the start and was shuffled back to last.  But, after settling, she started picking up horses.  She didn't threaten the top pair, but she was clearly the best of the rest. C. S. Silk also survived a claim of foul before securing the third spot.

Oconee and Shoe Strap are Made for Success and Thats a Good Thing

Oconee (Congaree - Chenoa by Wild Again) makes his debut in this 5 furlong race at Churchill Downs. His dam was unraced and has yet to produce a winner, but she is a half-sister to four graded performers including Demaloot Demashoot who earned $574,825 and won or placed in 8 graded stakes. He also won 2 races as a 2-year old and finished 3rd in the Iroquois (gr. III) that same year. Shoe Strap (Birdstone - Boot Strap by Storm Boot) makes his 2nd start. In his debut on May 21, he hesitated at the start and then freaked out a bit when the eventually winner crossed in front of him. Since that race, he has had some gate work so hopefully his start will be improved. He may also benefit from the outside post. Shoe Strap is the first foal out of a winning mare who is a half-sister to 2 winners, both of which won as 2-year olds.

Also coming out of the May 21 race at Churchill were Good Sermon (Honour and Glory - Sermon by Pulpit), War Lap (War Chant - Indy Five Hundred by A. P. Indy), and Pointing Home (Point Given - Palace Story by Palace Music).
Good Sermon, who finished 2nd on May 21, sold for $95,000 as a yearling and is the 2nd foal out of a winning mare who earned $52,674. His dam's first foal, Clearly Foxy, has earned $121,918 through 2008 and won the Natalma Stakes (CAN-III) as a 2-year old. War Lap was the even money favorite in the May 21 race, but could manage only a third place finish. War Lap sold for $150,000 as a yearling and is the first foal out of the grade I winner, Indy Five Hundred, who won the Garden City Breeders' Cup (gr I) and earned $244,510. She was also a 2-year old winner. Finishing 4th on May 21 was Pointing Home. A $50,000 yearling, Pointing Home is a half- or full- brother to 6 winners, 3 of which won as 2-year olds including Boot Scootin Daddy who won the Michigan Futurity as a 2-year old and earned $118,070 in his career. All the other entries in this race are making their debuts.

First-Year sire, Seattle Fitz, is represented by Fitzaslew (Seattle Fitz (ARG) - Basic Instinct by Polish Numbers) who sold for $52,000 as a yearling. Fitzaslew is the 2nd starter for Seattle Fitz who won $594,371 in a grade II stakes winning career. However, Seattle Fitz did not race as a 2-year old. Rachel and Silk Hope to be Best Lass on the Smokin Bayou

The Cinderella runner, Makasi, proved much the best in this one. She took the lead soon after the start and then drew off to win by 5. The biggest surprise to me is that she didn't get claimed out of the race. Felice the Cat ran a nice race and was clearly the best of the rest. Chatty Lulu was the clear winner in the battle of the Chatties. Floating on Air was in good position, but failed to make much of an impact on the race and ended up 5th.

A Singer gets Rachel; Halo Beauty scratched

Rachel Alexandra came out of the gate well, but she couldn't keep pace with the early speed and went backwards through the field. However, she did seem to settle and ran fairly evenly after that to end up 6th. The winner was the Songandaprayer filly, Songtress, who came from just off the pace to win going away. Best Lass pursued the winner with interest, but came up short. Symbology set the early pace before tiring in the stretch. One who would definitely benefit from an increase in distance is Missy Lou who trailed the field before closing nicely for 5th. Her full-sister, Honest to Betsy, goes in the Pearl City Stakes on Saturday at Belmont.

Halo Beauty was scratched out of her race at muddy Evangeline Downs.  The winner in that one was Reckon.

An update on Sly Storm, whose maiden victory was profiled here. On May 22, she ran second in a 7 furlong allowance race at Churchill Downs after being part of the early pace. She was the clear choice of the betting public, going off at less than even money.

For all those anxiously awaiting news of Smarty Jones' offspring. A little patience may be needed. Remember Smarty didn't run until November of his 2-year old year.

It has been suggested that I make a page for each 2-year old.  I think this is a good idea, but it will take some time to put it together. I will try get started soon.

Curly Works

Curly worked 5 furlongs at Arlington Park on May 22 recording a time of 1:03.20.  I wouldn't be bothered by Curly's relatively slow workout times, as we have witnessed he possesses no early speed.  He's just warming up after 5 furlongs.

Regardlesofoutcome Rachel Alexandra will be a Halo Beauty

Regardlessofoutcome jumped out the gate and never looked back.  He took the race by more than 7 and Elvis Trujillo never raised his stick.  Shoe Strap hesitated at the start and then almost completely stopped when Regardlessofoutcome crossed over in front of him to head towards the rail.  I am not saying that Regardlessofoutcome interfered with Shoe Strap, but he may have intimidated our little guy a bit. Still, Shoe Strap made a little move on the outside, passed one horse and finished just a neck out of 6th. Good Sermon hung around for 2nd, while War Lap (who was the even money favorite) finished third while running primarily on the wrong lead.  Another Dancer was scratched.

I have been putting the workouts by date and then by sire (alphabetically) and then by horse name, keeping separate those previously mentioned and those new to the blog. If you think it would make better sense to separate the works by stallion, let me know.
