Stakes Glory for Mine That Bird and Renda

That Bird Mines Stakes Silver

Favorite Dryden went right to the lead, closely followed by Oconee (Congaree). These two battled into the stretch. Meanwhile, Mine That Bird (Birdstone) was lingering near the back of the pack, securing a good rail spot. He was swung out for the drive and came barreling down the stretch, passing them all. Oconee surged past Dryden late to complete the Maiden Watch exacta. Not only is Mine That Bird the first stakes winner for Birdstone, he also contributed a nice bump to Birdstone's earnings as a sire.

Renda is Junior Champ

The race was taken off of the turf (caused not by the weather, but because of a burst pipe a few days ago), prompting the scratching of Americas Dreaming, Innovative, and Lady Kafca. One wonders if Americas Dreaming will ever get to make her U.S. debut. Maxinkuckee Miss, South Ocean Drive, and Countess Seagrape mixed it up on the lead, while Renda (Medaglia d'Oro) sat back off the early pace. She made her move and pounced on the leaders on the outside. At that point, the only question was how much she would win by. The answer was 7 lengths. Renda, who was Medaglia d'Oro's first winner, is now his first stakes winner.

Kristys Gold Forum Reigns Over Peace

Executive Girl set the early pace, joined by Fresas and Cerveza and Another Hugger. Kristys Gold Forum was just behind these and struck to the front in the stretch to win easily. Peace Reigns (Peace Rules) was in a good spot in fourth, but she tired at the end to 8th. Not a bad debut, she should move forward. Treetop Shock closed well to pick up the third spot.

Unzip Me Zips Past One Perfect Karat

The buzz horse, Speedin Excess, sprang to the lead pursued by Costa Marta and favorite Victory Dancer. One Perfect Karat (Pleasantly Perfect) was in a good spot, in fourth on the rail. Speedin Excess began to tire in the stretch and could not hold off the closing Unzip Me. One Perfect Karat did not make up any ground, but she did maintain her position. Apparently, Alex Solis lost his whip, but I don't think that had an affect on One Perfect Karat's performance.

Bedtime Story (Pleasantly Perfect - Fairy Tale by Seattle Slew) debuts in style, taking on 7 in the Ice Water Stakes at Woodbine, 7 furlongs on the turf. Bedtime Story has been working at Woodbine since mid-July, including a work on the turf training track on August 17. Bedtime Story, who sold for $60,000 as a yearling, is a half-sister to two winners. Her dam, Fairy Tale, is a half-sister to 6 winners, including grade III stakes winner, Cobra King. Pleasantly Perfect is the sire of one stakes-placed horse, Rapid Redux.

The most experienced horse in the race is Koonunga Hill (Wonneberg - Easy to Praise by Alwuhush) who has never been worse than 3rd in her 4 starts. She finished 3rd in the Shady Well Stakes on July 13, and 2nd in the Nandi Stakes on August 3. Although she has never run on the turf, two of her siblings won and were stakes-placed on the surface.

Lady Shakespeare (Theatrical - Lady Shirl by That's a Nice) was an impressive debut winner on the Woodbine turf on August 15. However, I wonder about such a quick turnaround with a 2-year old. Lady Shakespeare is a full-sister to grade I winner and millionaire Shakespeare, who won the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational S. (gr. IT), the Woobine Mile (CAN-IT), and the Belmont Breeders' Cup (gr. II).

The only other winner in the field is Dancingontheedge (The Cliff's Edge - Mystery Dance by Sword Dance (IRE)) who won her 2nd start, a mile Maiden Special Weight race on the Polytrack at Arlington Park on July 2. She also finished 6th on that surface on May 25. Dancingontheedge is by first-crop sire The Cliff's Edge, who has not yet had any stakes performers. Dancingontheedge is a half-sister to one stakes winner and one stakes-placed runner. However, neither won on turf.

Baytree (Forestry - Ginseng by Saros (GB)) finished 2nd in her only start, at 6 furlongs on the Woodbine Turf on August 15 (this was not the same race that Lady Shakespeare comes out of). Ginseng, dam of Baytree, was a stakes winner on dirt and stakes-placed on turf.

Panther Strike (Black Minnaloushe - Preemptive Attack by Smart Strike) and Freyga (Touch Gold - Skip a Dare by Skip Away) both finished 6th in their only starts on the Woodbine Polytrack, July 26 and July 19 respectively. Panther Strike is the 2nd foal out of an unraced mare who is a half-sister to 2 turf winners, including Raw Power who was stakes-placed on the surface. Freyga's dam is a half-sister to 2 turf winners, including Air Miss, stakes-placed on the turf.

Unraced Weekend Prospect (A. P. Indy - Miss Du Bois by Mr. Prospector) completes the field. Weekend Prospect is a half-sister to 3 winners, including grade I stakes winner Film Maker. Film Maker won or placed in 17 graded stakes, all on the turf, and earned $2,203,730.

Noble Rule (Peace Rules - Vienna Knickers by Noble Saint) returns after finishing 3rd on July 4 and 2nd on July 26. If she continues that pattern, she should be an easy winner. Noble Rule is out of a winning mare who is the dam of 3 winners including the grade III winner, Mr. Livingston who finished 3rd in the Rhythm Stakes as a 2-year old. Peace Rules' 24 runners have made a total of 55 starts, recording 12 wins, 6 seconds, and 7 thirds and earnings of $270,633.

Sailing Time (Unbridled Time - Drama's Way by Farma Way), who sold for $32,000 at 2, finished 9th on August 3 in a Maiden Special Weight and 2nd on July 20 in a Maiden Claiming race, both races at Calder. Sailing Time is out of a stakes winning mare who has produced one winner.

Marija's Wish (Lightnin N Thunder - Arion's Wish by Lyphard's Wish (FR)) was 5th in her only start, a Maiden Special Weight at Calder on August 10. She is out of a winner and is a half-sister to 4 winners.

Also finishing 5th in her only start, a Maiden Claiming race at Calder on August 8, was Hopespringseternal (Tiger Ridge - Pop Pop's Hope by Valid Trefaire). Hopespringseternal is the first foal out of a mare who was a winner at 2, and who is a half-sister to 5 winners.

The remaining runners are making their first starts including Candy Jak (Candy Ride (ARG) - Marine Band by Dehere), by first-crop sire Candy Ride. Candy Ride's 21 runners have made 43 total starts, recording 9 wins, 8 seconds, 5 thirds, and $421,874. Candy Jak is the 2nd foal out of a 2-year old winning mare who is a half-sister to 2 winners, including stakes winner Cielo Girl.

Tadisha (Exchange Rate - Taunting by Stay the Course) is a half-sister to the winner Yes It's Time and her dam is a half- or full-sister to 7 winners, including grade III stakes winner, Closing Bid.

Positively True (Yes It's True - Postulant by Pulpit) is the first foal out of the winning mare, Postulant. Postulant is a half-sister to 5 winners, including grade II stakes winner Antrim Rd.

Eternal Peace, dam of Peaceful Tiger (Tiger Ridge - Eternal Peace by Hold Your Peace), was a winner and has produced 6 winners from 6 to run.

Smarty Marty (Smarty Jones - Frozen Rope by Clever Trick) returns after tiring in her debut on July 24 and finishing 7th. She has had one work since that start. Frozen Rope, dam of Smarty Marty, was stakes-placed as a 2-year old and has 7 winners from 7 to race, including stakes winner Knot So Clever who was also a debut winner at 2. Smarty Jones has had 9 runners who have made 12 collectively starts, recording 3 wins and 1 second, and earnings of $76,207.

I am a little puzzled by the presence of Nan (High Yield - Trip Around Heaven by Halo) in this race, since she ran so well when finishing 2nd in her debut on the Saratoga turf on July 28. It may be that there was no turf race for her. Nan is out of a mare who has produced 11 winners from 12 to race. Her winners include Limoncella, who was stakes-placed.

The only other experienced runner is Pumpkin Shell (Lion Heart - Changing Ways by Time for a Change) who was 2nd in her debut at Saratoga on July 27. Pumpkin Shell is by leading freshman sire, Lion Heart whose 38 runners have made 72 total starts, recording 14 wins, 12 seconds, 7 thirds, and $667,937. Changing Ways, dam of Pumpkin Shell, won the Schuylerville (gr. II) as a 2-year old. As a broodmare, Changing Ways has produced 6 winners, including Pays to Dream who won the Dixie Stakes (gr. IIT), and who has earned $377,741 through 2008.

In a race full of 6-figure sales horses, the top-seller is A. P. Elegance (A. P. Indy - Beaucette by Mr. Prospector) who brought $675,000 as a yearling. A. P. Elegance is the first foal out of the stakes-placed mare, Beaucette, who earned $113,321. Beaucette is a half-sister to graded stakes winners Mr. Mellon and Seeking the Best.

Sara Louise (Malibu Moon - Kings Lynn by Mt. Livermore) brought $180,000 as a yearling and $550,000 as a 2-year old. Her dam was a 2-year old winner and grade III stakes-placed at 3, while earning $140,714. Sara Louise is a half-sister to 4 winners, including Jacobino, a group I winner in Mexico. Two of her siblings won at 2.

Bringing $500,000 as a 2-year old was Nika (Dixie Union - Open Flirt by A. P. Indy). Nika is the first foal out of a mare who is a half-sister to 5 winners, including 2-year old stakes winners Jena Jena, Up Like Thunder, and Win With a Wink.

Proclaim (Pulpit - Stormy Reply by Storm Cat) who sold for $350,000 as a yearling, is a half-sister to Carolina Belle who was a 2-year old winner. Their dam, Stormy Reply, is a daughter of champion 2-year old filly, Phone Chatter.

Heavenly Vision (Forestry - Holy Bubbette by Holy Bull) sold for $170,000 as a weanling and $240,000 as a yearling. Holy Bubbette, dam of Heavenly Vision, was a stakes winner who earned $240,995. Heavenly Vision is her first foal.

She'll Be Right (Sky Mesa - Boogie Beach Blues by Cure the Blues) was a $40,000 yearling and is a half-sister to stakes winner Storm Treasure, who has earned $475,700 through 2008. As a 2-year old, Storm Treasure won one race and finished 2nd in two others.

On Parade has produced 2 winners from 2 to run, including stakes winner Parading, a full-brother to Cheering. On Parade is a daughter of grade I winner and millionaire My Flag, who is a daughter of undefeated Personal Ensign.

Amazon Lily (Unbridled's Song - Aztec Pearl by A. P. Indy) is the 2nd foal out of a stakes-placed mare who earned $138,188. Amazon Lily's dam is a half-sister to graded stakes winners Arch, Festival of Light, and Acoma.

Congaree's 24 runners have started 40 total times, registering 7 wins, 7 seconds, and 3 thirds, and $281,666 in earnings.

Segal over Persian; The Cowboy runs again

Persian got out of the gate well and raced near the front for a bit before tiring.  It was encouraging that he remained in fourth and didn't fall back farther.  The winner was the top-seller from the race, Segal who started a bit slowly but soon took the lead.  He then drew off like a horse with a promising future, to win by 4.  Screen Your Friend, who was 4th on April 18, improved to take 2nd.  The filly, Mar Fina, broke awkwardly and was never much involved, finishing last.  Out of the Van was scratched.

The Cowboy Runs Again

Katolak Cowboy (colt; Saarland - Tide Cat by Storm Cat) who finished 7th in his debut on April 20, becomes our first return runner. He will again try 2 furlongs at Woodbine. Three of his opponents are back, Tin Pan Alley Cat who finished 5th, Player's List who was 8th, and Can'tstopthiscat who finished 3rd. Interestingly, the filly Can'tstopthiscat has run since then, finishing third on May 3 also at 2 furlongs. Another familiar horse is Yo Joe who finished 5th in the first 2-year old race profiled on this blog.

Katolak Cowboy's dam, Tide Cat, was unraced and she has produced one winner who earned $43,143 and finished 5th in one 2-year old start. Tide Cat is a half-sister to Ide winner of the Southwest (gr. III) and Rebel (gr. III) stakes. Ide was a very good 2-year old, earning $243,780 that season including wins in the Iroquois (gr. III) and Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (gr. III).

The top-seller in this race was Bear Encounter (Johannesburg - Current Encounter by Little Current) who sold for $142,000 as a yearling.  All 4 of Current Encounters offspring who have run were winners, but only one won during his 2-year old season.

The first-crop sire Stroll is represented in this race by Fast Eddie (Stroll - Icee Sara by Eskimo). Midnight Break (colt; Congaree - Twilight Spectre by Imp Society) worked 3 furlongs at Keeneland, recording a time of :36.60. Midnight Break is a half-brother to 3 winners including Ethan Man who won the Swale Stakes (gr. III). Ethan Man also broke his maiden in his 2-year old debut.

Another Congaree who worked 3 furlongs was the filly, Sugaree Gold (Congaree - Sugar is Gold by Slew o' Gold) who registered a time of :38.00 at Hollywood Park. Sugar is Gold has produced 8 winners including the stakes winner, Shot of Gold, who earned $515,033.

At Hollywood Park, the Peace Rules filly, Trifecta King (Peace Rules - Mamita by Unbridled) worked 4 furlongs in :48.40. Yes, Trifecta King is a filly.  I double-checked.  If anyone has an explanation as to why a filly would be named Trifecta King, please chime in. Trifecta King is the first foal out of an unraced mare.  However, her dam is a half-sister to Church Service who is grade II-placed and most recently (on March 29, 2008) finished 2nd in the Tokyo City Handicap.

Babylon Road (filly; Speightstown - Bowmanston by Phone Trick) went 2 furlongs in :25.00 at Winding Oaks Farm.  It was the fastest of 11 works at the distance. Babylon Road's dam is a half-sister to 2 stakes winners.

Cedros (colt; Medaglia d'Oro - Wayward Bound by Mr. Prospector) worked 3 furlongs at Keeneland recording a time of :38.00. Cedros is a half-brother to 5 winners.

Two Saarland fillies worked on this date, Saarlands Star went 2 furlongs at Hollywood in :23.20 while Exclusive Scheme worked 3 furlongs in :39.00 at Quiet Woman Farm Training Center. Saarlands Star is the first foal out of the unraced Conquistador Cielo mare, Interruption. Interruption is a half-sister to 7 winners, 3 of which won as 2-year olds. Exclusive Scheme's dam, the Distant View mare, Pyramid Scheme, is a half-sister to 4 winners.

At Santa Anita, Exile (colt; Speightstown - Ruff by Clever Trick) worked 3 furlongs in :38.60. Exile's dam, Ruff, was a multiple-stakes winner whose victories include the Miss Grillo Stakes (gr. III) as a 2-year old. As a broodmare, Ruff has produced one winner (from 2 to race).
