Precious Beans and River Treck get Screened; Next Up: Rapid Redux and Bajan Kitty

The experienced Screen Your Friend prompted the pace and surged at the wire to take the race by a neck, becoming the first winner for Friends Lake. Indeedingly ran well, but couldn't hold off Screen Your Friend.

Precious Beans ran a very nice race and shouldn't be a maiden much longer.  He stalked the top pair for the early part of the race and then seemed to fade a little. But instead of falling back like many 2-year olds, he came on again and actually closed the gap at the wire.

It was a fairly even performance for River Treck who didn't threaten the placings. It was not a good sign for the Cecil Borel-trained River Treck when brother Calvin chose to ride Screen Your Friend.

Rapid Redux Rides Again

Rapid Redux (Pleasantly Perfect - Thiscatsforyoucaryl by Storm Cat) makes his 2nd start at Monmouth on Thursday after a good 2nd in his debut on May 16 at Belmont. He may face an off-track again, as it was muddy at Monmouth today.

Three other horses have experience in the race, Neatoknock (Knockadoon - Neat by Lil Fappi) and Atomic Rain (Smart Strike - Paradise Pond by Cox's Ridge) faced off in a 4.5 furlong race on May 18 at Monmouth finishing 4th and 2nd respectively. Interestingly, Atomic Rain was entered in Rapid Redux' race on May 16, but was scratched. Neatoknock's dam, Neat, was a winner of $73,755 and has produced one winner. Atomic Rain sold for $170,000 as a yearling and is a half-brother to one winner.

The other experienced entry is Shyisha (Roar of the Tiger - Miss Molliemac by Fighting Fight) who finished 7th in a 2 furlong race at Delaware on May 18. Shyisha is by first-year stallion Roar of the Tiger who is a full-brother to Giant's Causeway. Roar of the Tiger has had 8 starters who have recorded 3 wins, 5 seconds, and 5 thirds. Miss Molliemac was a winner who earned $90,485. She has produced 2 winners.

Selling for $140,000 as a 2-year old was Rondevous (Montbrook - Regal Ballad by Saint Ballado). Rondevous is a half-brother to 2 winners including one 2-year old winner.

Coltraider (Thunder Gulch - Final Legacy by Boston Harbor), who sold for $90,000 as a yearling, is out of a dam who is a half-sister to Storm Cat. She has produced one winner, Ranchy, who broke her maiden in her 2-year old debut and who has earned $31,006 through 2008.

Detective (Officer - Butterscotch Sauce by Clever Trick) is a half- or full- brother to 9 winners, 2 of which won as 2-year olds.

The dam of The Crooner (Songandaprayer - Love Mia (ARG) by El Sultan (ARG)) is a half-sister to group I winner Second Reality (ARG)). The Crooner sold for $75,000 as a 2-year old.

Bajan Kitty Debuts Against Fellow Cal-breds

Bajan Kitty (Speightstown - Pleasing by Falstaff) becomes the first U.S. starter for Speightstown whose Lord Shanakill won a Maiden Stakes at York on May 15. Bajan Kitty, who was formerly known as Mighty Pleasing, faces her fellow Californians in a 5 furlong test at Hollywood. Bajan Kitty sold for $60,000 as a yearling and is a half-sister to 3 winners including millionaire Excessivepleasure who won the Indiana Derby (gr. III) and was 2 for 2 as a 2-year old.

Streamin Heat (Bring the Heat - Newport Nikki by Lit de Justice) finished 3rd in Trifecta King's debut on May 15. Since Cosmic Queen and Trifecta King are considered to be the early leaders of the 2-year old fillies in California and since another entry in that race (Meetyouatyogi's) has come back to win, Streamin Heat would seem to be the one to beat in this race. Streamin Heat is also a full-sister to stakes winner Excessive Heat who has earned $149,800 through 2008. Excessive Heat broke her maiden in her 2-year old debut and won the GTOBA Juvenile Filly Turf Dash Stakes and Catcharisingstar Stakes that same year.

Wendoffer (Officer - Back to Rack by Private Terms) and Steal My Charm (Rio Verde - Foursacharm by Sovereign Dancer) competed in a 4.5 furlong Maiden Race at Hollywood on May 21 with Wendoffer finishing 3rd and Steal My Charm 6th. Wendoffer is out of a winning mare who is a half- or full-sister to 4 winners. Steal My Charm's dam was also a winner and she has produced 2 winners, 1 of which won as a 2-year old.

Another experience runner is Extended (Swiss Yodeler - Really Hard by In Excess (IRE)) who finished 2nd in a 4.5 furlong race at Hollywood Park on May 2.  Extended's dam is a full-sister to the stakes winner, Sailinwithcaptain who won the Don B Stakes as a 2-year old. Extended sold for $40,000 as a yearling.

Seven siblings of Ten Churros (High Brite - Grana by Miswaki) were winners, but only one won as a 2-year old.

Rusalka (Intidab - Beautiful Ingenue by Brunswick) is the first foal out of a winning dam who is a half-sister to 4 winners.

The dam of No Due Diligence (Momentum - Electric Fable by Quiet American) has produced one winner and is a half- or full-sister to 7 winners.

Golden Rocketship (Muqtarib - Lynjoraean by Apollo) is a full-sister to the winner, Lunar Liftoff.

Overdraft (Skimming - Altruistic by Slew's Royalty) is the first foal out of a winning mare who is a half-sister to 3 winners, one of which won as a 2-year old.

No Treaty for Saar; Precious Beans vs. River Treck

The most suspenseful part of this race was before the break.  First, Miquelina was a late scratch. Then, One More Prospect did not want to load. Once in the gate, she reared several times.  She was backed out and reloaded, reared again, and finally settled. Finally, Girlfrienontheside acted up in the gate. Through all the activity, Saar Treaty was calm. The break itself was fairly uneventful.

A group of 5 sprinted away from the pack, Girlfrienontheside, Arthurs Appeal, One More Prospect, Lesseroftwoevils, and Impadoodle. One More Prospect, perhaps tired from her gate antics, gave up first and faded to the back. Meanwhile, Girlfrienontheside pulled away to take the race. She was followed by the experienced horses who finished 2nd, 3rd, and 4th (Lessoroftwoevils, Impadoodle, and Arthurs Appeal). Saar Treaty, who stayed out of the speed duel, ran evenly to take the 5th spot.

Precious Beans vs. River Treck

Another head-to-head encounter as Precious Beans (Medaglia d'Oro - Precious Feather by Gone West) takes on River Treck (Congaree - Gem Trick by Java Gold) at Churchill Downs. Precious Beans has raced once, finishing 6th in a 4.5 furlong race at Calder on April 26. His dam, Precious Feather, was a stakes winner who earned $257,441 including second place finishes in the Azalea (gr. III) and Turfway Breeders' Cup (gr. III). Precious Feather is the dam of 2 winners, one of which won as a 2-year old. River Treck is making his debut. He was a $110,000 yearling and is a half-brother to 6 winners including stakes winner Buddy Got Even.

The only other experienced horse in the race is Screen Your Friend (Friends Lake - Screen Prospect by Rare Performer). Screen Your Friend, by first-year sire, Friends Lake, is a familiar name to Maiden Watch readers as he finished 4th on April 18 and 2nd on May 7, both feature races on the blog.  The dam of Screen Your Friend won or placed in 15 stakes (7 of them graded) and earned $575,747.  As a 2-year old, she started 3 times winning her first two starts and finishing 2nd in the Gold Digger Stakes.  Six of Screen Prospect's offspring have raced and all have won, 2 won during their 2-year old season. Out of 3 offspring to race, Screen Your Friend is Friends Lake's best performer so far.

Two other first-year stallions are represented in this race. Action This Day has Night Action (Action This Day - Saint Aubin by Saint Ballado). Action This Day has had 4 runners which have produced one 2nd and two 3rds. Night Action sold for $50,000 as a 2-year old. His dam, Saint Aubin, won $85,995 and has produced 2 winners. Meetmeatthechapel (Chapel Royal - Run Kate Run by Cherokee Run) is by first-year sire Chapel Royal who has had 3 winners, 4 seconds, and 4 thirds from 13 to race. Meetmeatthechapel is the first foal out of the unraced mare, Run Kate Run who is a half-sister to 2 winners. Meetmeatthechapel was a $50,000 weanling purchase.

The overall sales-topper from this race is Indeedingly (Street Cry - Dance Cat by Danzig) who sold for $200,000 as a yearling. Indeedingly is a half-brother to one winner and his dam is a half- or full- sister to 10 winners including 1974 Kentucky Derby winner Cannonade and grade III stakes winner Circle Home who won the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (gr. III) and the Heritage Stakes (gr. III) as a 2-year old.

The dam of Chess Master (Tactical Cat - Fleeting Melody by Stravinsky) is a half-sister to 2 winners.

Grief (Gilded Time - Reef by Cape Town) is out of a mare who earned $78,825 and who finished 3rd once in 2 starts as a 2-year old. Grief is her first foal, but she is a half-sister to 7 winners.

It's a Warrior's Reward For All Who Conga with a Smart Woman

I was out of town and got a little behind on the workouts, so today is catch up day. Hopefully, we'll get some entries in the next day or two. I have been putting the workouts by date and then by sire (alphabetically) and then by horse name, keeping separate those previously mentioned and those new to the blog. If you think it would make better sense to separate the works by stallion, let me know.

Just Four to Go for Curly

Like many twinspires.com customers, I was shut out of the Derby.  In fact, I tried to login so many times that I disabled my login.  I called immediately after the race, not to complain about the service, but to reinstate my account.  "I need to bet the 12th at Arlington."  Luckily, this was easily done.

If you didn't have a chance to watch Curly's race live or via replay, I would encourage you to take a look.  It was a very enjoyable race. As in his first start, Curly was severely lacking early speed.  In fact, for much of the race, he wasn't in the picture.  Instead, his old buddy, Stirrup Excitment set the early pace. Finally, he started coming as they came into the final turn ("now here comes Curly"). But, he was pushed wide, wide, wider than Big Brown in the Derby (officially 7 wide).  Amazingly, Curly kept coming and coming.  Meanwhile Four to Go was closing too, but he had the rail and less distance to travel.  At the wire, it was Four to Go by a head.  Sure it was a very fast pace that set up for a closer, but Curly looked like a real racehorse out there. By the way, I did have the exacta in Curly's race, hopefully I wasn't the only one.

Katolak Cowboy can't keep up with the Girls

Result: April 20, 2008
Woodbine Race 3
My Sweet Natalie
$12.70
$5.70
$5.10
Fanci Candi

$7.80
$5.40
Can'tstopthiscat

$10.40

It was all about the girls at Woodbine, as fillies took the first three spots.  This is not an uncommon phenomenon in baby races, as fillies, like human girls vs. boys, mature faster than colts. As is the case with many 2-year old races, especially those at short distances, first one out of the gate won.  Katolak Cowboy was 7th all the way.  But, all the horses picked up a check in this one, so he earned $398.
