Breakwithtradition to Light an Update for Texas Wood

Two scratches on the day, Barrrichello (Speightstown) at Woodbine (but L. A. Rules (Peace Rules) went in that one, so there will be a recap below) and Rocket Defense (Peace Rules) at Laurel. This was not a surprise, as I received a workout notice for her in the morning. The winner was Perfect Pet who went gate-to-wire.

Lady Shakespeare Does Her Family Proud

Lots of activity during the gate loading in this one, not unexpected in a race full of unraced 2-year olds. Divine Destiny thrashed in the gate and was a late vet scratch. Wiggle and a Wink (Congaree) broke with the leaders, Ochoa and Getting Away. Getting Away fell back first, but Wiggle and a Wink stuck with Ochoa. However, Wiggle and a Wink tired in the stretch and ended up fourth. Meanwhile, Lady Shakespeare was closing like a rocket and went by everyone to continue the family turf tradition.

Greatness Rules

Lord of Greatness went right to the lead, but L. A. Rules was stuck to his side. Those two soon separated themselves from the rest of the field. L. A. Rules stuck close, but he couldn't get by Lord of Greatness. In the end, Lord of Greatness pulled away for a 2 length victory. However, L. A. Rules was much the best of the rest.

Tar Beach Takes the Points Over Beans and Soul

As predicted, this one came off the turf and was run at 7 furlongs on the dirt (this is starting to sound like a broken record). Luv Gov and Insider set the early pace, but neither was around at the finish (although Insider held better, taking 4th). The favorite, Take the Points, seemed poised for victory and took a short lead in the stretch. But, Tar Beach, who had been stuck in traffic, broke through in time to take the win. A number of horses had traffic problems in this one, including Precious Beans (Medaglia d'Oro) who secured a good spot despite a bobble at the start. He was in amongst horses and then seemed to lack punch when finally free. Into My Soul (Pleasantly Perfect) didn't show much. Maybe next time, he will actually get to run on the turf.

The Ladd has some Jazzi Tricks

Tricky Ladd rocketed out of the gate (the chart says, "broke well." I think that's a bit of an understatement, he was 6 in front at the quarter) and the race was pretty much over (remember they were only going 3.5 furlongs). Jazzi Dawn (Saarland) was the closest pursuer, but she couldn't make much of a dent. She tired a bit, and lost her 2nd position by a nose and a neck.

Pattie is the Singing Heir

It was starting to get a little scary, as Singing Rose (Congaree), Heir to the Stone (Birdstone), and Passum Pattie (Peace Rules) rolled off three straight wins for Maiden Watch. Reality returned with thirds for Texas Birdstone (Birdstone) and King Congo (Congaree), but overall it was a good day for our first-year stallions. Only one entry for July 11, Audible (Congaree) who is a main track only runner at Belmont. Anyone know how to do a rain dance?

Naturally Bold went to the lead in this one, closely followed by Singing Rose who finally ran the leader down in the stretch. She then had to hold off the oncoming C Karma who came wide. Singing Rose dug in and prevailed, scoring a well-earned victory to become the 4th winner for Congaree.

Texas Stone Can't Catch Danger

Texas Birdstone was bumped on both sides at the start, but was not discouraged and made his way up to the middle of the pack. Meanwhile, up front, Tres Dangereux was having things his own way, while Nun Like Me applied token pressure. Texas Birdstone went way wide on the turn, but put in a bid and I began to believe that the Maiden Watch winning ways would continue. But, Texas Birdstone tired a bit and could not sustain his bid, as Mercury Express closed well to take 2nd. Still, a promising debut for Texas Birdstone who overcame trouble and beat 9 horses.
