Five runners in four races (Promise Me Merlot was a scratch), but only one winner.  However, it was a good one as Zigaree took the Minstrel Stakes. Zigaree was off a bit slow and settled near the back of the pack. Up front, Not Grounded, Bertsgoldenmissile, and Takin' the Bullet were setting the early fractions. Zigaree swung to the outside and cruised by them all to score an impressive victory. With this triumph, Zigaree becomes the second stakes winner for Congaree and Maiden Watch's first turf winner.

Me You and Her Mostly Leaves Her Race at the Gate

Me You and Her (Smarty Jones) may be getting some gate work after this debut. First, she was reluctant to load, they finally got her in after Joe Bravo hopped off. But then, she was in the gate awkwardly and they had to remove the 1 and 3 horses and pull Me You and Her back out. She was reloaded without incident, but came out of the gate slowly and was never much involved in the race. The only horse that she beat was our other runner, Mostly Peace (Peace Rules), who was part of the pace early on, but retreated steadily after the half. Lion's Terms, went right to the lead and built a 4 length advantage. He tired, however, and Coffee in Bed, closed well to make things interesting. The wire came in time to preserve the win for Lion's Terms. Itwillbelovely also closed well after a slow start.

Pterodactyls Rule Himynameissarah

This one was pretty much a match race between Pterodactyls Rule and first-time starter, Stroll By, who quickly sprinted away from the field. Stroll By had the early advantage, but the more experienced Pterodactyls Rule was able to overtake her and draw off. It was way back to Golden Currency in third. Himynameissarah (Saarland) ran evenly to take 4th, but she was no threat to the top three, 2 of which she had defeated previously.

Lets Just Say it's The Cliff's End for Tannic

Lets Just Say went to the lead, pursued by The Cliff's End. The Cliff's End was in front for a minute, but Lets Just Say had another gear and put that one away. Tannic (Saarland) was off slowly, but soon got into the race and closed well to take third. The top 3 finishers all made favorable impressions and I would expect The Cliff's End and Tannic to join Lets Just Say as winners soon.

Interestingly, finishing 5th in that race was Tashi who broke his maiden on July 18 at Woodbine. Bear Most Wanted, who sold for $130,000 as a yearling, is the first foal out of an unraced mare who is a half-sister to grade I stakes winner and millionaire, Ten Most Wanted. Megacode is by freshman sire, Omega Code whose 15 runners have made 34 combined starts, registering 7 wins, 3 seconds, and 4 thirds. Merica, the dam of Megacode, was a 2-year old winner and has produced 9 winners including stakes winner, Megacles. First-crop sire Tapit is the sire of Sky Taps who was a $37,000 yearling. Tumblebrutus is a full-brother to Giant's Causeway and fellow first-year sire, Roar of the Tiger. Willsgray (El Corredor – Doughty by Strike the Gold) has run twice, both times finishing 2nd at Arlington Park. He was a $85,000 yearling and is the first foal out of a winning mare who is a half-sister to 4 winners including Merger who was group II placed as a 2-year old.

Keefer, who was a $60,000 yearling, is a half-brother to three winners including stakes-placed Golden Rainbow who has earned $260,780 through 2008. Golden Rainbow was also a 2-year old winner. In the latter race, she showed a lot of guts, fighting back to the lead before being overtaken by a closing Evita Argentina. Since that race, she has had a good 4 furlong work. Lippy Rules' dam, Jive Talker, was 3 for 3 as a 2-year old including 2 stakes wins. Overall, she earned $102,780 in her career. Lippy Rules is a half-sister to 3 winners.

Selling for $120,000 as a yearling was Turtle Creek Babe (Grand Slam – Cyclorama by Theatrical (IRE), who finished 2nd in her only try at Hollywood on June 1. Tashi Runs Away From Barrichello

Barrichello came out of the gate slowly and spotted the field several lengths before he got into stride. Meanwhile up front, Tashi, went right to the front mostly unhindered. He continued on to win be more than 4. Trigranaut was near the pace early, backed off, and then came on again for a good second. Quebec City ran evenly for third. Barrichello saved ground on the rail and made a bit of a run. He only passed one, Legend Killer, but he was catching the pack at the end.

Smokey Fella set the pace in this one, closely attended by Back in Baltimore. But, Hopeforthebest moved between horses and then swung out to just overtake Back in Baltimore. The Maiden Watches horses did not have much to say about this one, but Longandstrong did start running late to get into 4th and should appreciate more distance. Prolific, who was adding blinkers for this start, looked a little edgy in the post parade and this may have affected his performance. He ran rather wide and ended up 6th. By the way, Naughty and Bold and Saintly Sir were an amusing coupled entry.

Dubai Rainbow went to the lead pursued by the favorite, Valid Vision. It seemed as though Valid Vision could go by Dubai Rainbow any time, but that one was tough. Eventually, however, Valid Vision was too much and got up for the win. These two were well clear of the third place finisher, Humble Destin who in turn was far ahead of the rest of the field. Stone Skipper raced in 5th most of the race and seemed poised to make a move, but tired a bit instead and ended up 6th.

Citizen took all the money at the windows and went right to the lead, pursuers included our own Follow the Rules and Chess Master. Follow the Rules tired first and faded back into the field to finish 9th. Chess Master kept up the pace in the stretch, but he too tired and was 8th. Gresham and Buddha Can Dance both closed well to pick up 2nd and 3rd, but there was no catching Citizen.

Hard Truth made the lead, but was pursued by Millie Sunshine throughout.  That one finally drove to the lead in the stretch. Delectable Cat, the favorite could do no better than 3rd after passing tired ones. Prosecca secured a good spot on the rail, but couldn't quicken when it was time for the real running and ended up 6th.

Be by Dance the Cha Cha

Livingston's Ghost reared in the gate and was a late scratch. This caused a delay, as all the horses were backed out. After they were reloaded, favorite Be by  Me went right to the lead. Dance the Cha Cha gave chase and looked like he might go by, but instead Be by Me spurted away to win by 6. Dance the Cha Cha, however, was clear in 2nd and not threatened by a closing Tenmor.

Angel in Heaven Too Much for Toxaway, Birdseye, and Conga Queen

Angel in Heaven and Eru dueled for most of the race. But in the end, Angel in Heaven pulled away for a clear win. Humble Storm Kathy closed well to take third. None of the Maiden Watch horses, Toxaway, Birdseye, and Conga Queen, had particularly clean trips and that may have affected their performances, as they finished 5th, 6th, and 8th.

Zigaree (Congaree - Zigabout by Danzig) who broke his maiden on June 15, now moves into stakes competition with the Minstrel Stakes at about 7 furlongs on the turf. Also joining Zigaree from his maiden victory are Blaze Buster (Syncline - Lolo Creek by Housebuster) who was 4th and Durty Whit (River Squall - Racindurty by Tilt the Odds) who was 8th. Both of those runners are still maidens, however, they did finish 2nd and 3rd respectively on June 27 behind another runner in this field, Takin' the Bullet (Red Bullet - Border Fire by Boudary) in a 5 furlong turf race. That June 27 race was Takin' the Bullet's only start. Bertsgoldenmissile (Golden Missile - Storm West by Gone West) also ran in Zigaree's June 15 race, finishing 3rd. Since that race, Bertsgoldenmissile broke his maiden on July 6.

The other maiden in the race is Wells Park (Sligo Bay (IRE) - Global by Native Prospector) who was 6th in his only start on July 4. That race, however, was on the turf.

Like many twinspires.com customers, I was shut out of the Derby.  In fact, I tried to login so many times that I disabled my login.  I called immediately after the race, not to complain about the service, but to reinstate my account.  "I need to bet the 12th at Arlington."  Luckily, this was easily done. 

If you didn't have a chance to watch Curly's race live or via replay, I would encourage you to take a look.  It was a very enjoyable race. As in his first start, Curly was severely lacking early speed.  In fact, for much of the race, he wasn't in the picture.  Instead, his old buddy, Stirrup Excitment set the early pace. Finally, he started coming as they came into the final turn ("now here comes Curly"). But, he was pushed wide, wide, wider than Big Brown in the Derby (officially 7 wide).  Amazingly, Curly kept coming and coming.  Meanwhile Four to Go was closing too, but he had the rail and less distance to travel.  At the wire, it was Four to Go by a head.  Sure it was a very fast pace that set up for a closer, but Curly looked like a real racehorse out there. By the way, I did have the exacta in Curly's race, hopefully I wasn't the only one.
