I agree with the comments about Sweet Life--how was she POSSIBLY left off this list?? It would be interesting to know how many other mares have produced more than one Breeders' Cup winner.

Look for Court Vision (out of Weekend Storm) to capture another grade I this weekend in the Maker's Mark at Keeneland.

What about Sweet Life, two breeders cup winners, (Life is Sweet and Sweet Catomine), plus other stakes runners, why is she not on the list?

Why wouldn't Well Dressed be mentioned? Well Armed (Won the Dubai Classic) and Witty (Went undefeated and won G3 Railbird) were both big winners last year. She has established greatness with already having Helsinki as being graded stakes placed earlier in his career. In my opinion, she deserves to be in this company.

Scot's reply: Another fine mare that made the short list but was cut in the final round! Well Armed's only 2009 stakes victory was outside of North America, which was the primary focus of the Broodmare of the Year feature. All of the mares that made the final cut had 2009 group I winners in the U.S. or Canada. Check back in early 2011 to help determine the contestants for next year's edition!

Where is the mare GET LUCKY? She the mare of Girolamo the grand dam of Super Saver. Both were grade two winners of 2009.

Scot's reply: You're right -- one of the best traits of true "blue hen" mares is that they not only produce fine offspring themselves, but their daughters carry on their legacy. For this year's voting, we had so many fine broodmares to choose from that we looked only at 2009 grade I producers.

What about Sweet Life? Dam of Sweet Catomine and Life is Sweet, both Breeders' Cup winners?

Scot's reply: Sweet Life would, unarguably, have been a deserving contender in this year's review -- she just didn't make our final round of editorial eliminations. You'll notice that most of the mares on the list had multiple stakes winners in 2009 or were represented by their best runner at the end of a long broodmare career; Sweet Life had only one (albeit an outstanding one!) black type winner last year, and she has many promising foals still to run. At the beginning of 2011, MarketWatch will seek reader input on which mares should be profiled in the 2010 Broodmare of the Year feature -- so check back then to ensure your favorite makes the list!
