However, I also feel a mare should have had at least two or more foals. I'm a huge fan of TBs from family eight from which UNCLE MO comes

Do I think his dam Playa Maya should be considered? No ofcourse not.

Vertigineux will get my vote

Vertigineux has been excellent but there are others, and their progeny and records should be clearly posted. I don't know the criteria to vote, but if it's strictly by record (as it should be), I'd have to vote for the mare whose offspring performed best in that year (if it's given for a particular year). Use common sense people!

BROODMARE OF THE YEAR (rev. 4/21/2003)

Criteria:

Broodmare of the Year award will be given to a mare producing an offspring that was conceived in Kentucky, foaled in Kentucky and a Grade 1 stakes winner in the award year. Consideration is then given to the quality of the mare’s produce in previous years. (Number of Graded and non-Graded stakes winners and their earnings.)

A list of nominees is then sent to the Directors for their vote for Broodmare of the Year. The list shall include the name of the broodmare nominee, the name of her current owner, the name(s) of the current year stakes winner(s), highest grade stakes won and earnings, and the same information on the mare’s produce in previous years.

I don't feel it should be a popularity contest. Rather, it should be confined to those voters most qualified to vote for such an award. But, how does one determine those most qualified to vote-not so simple a task..As far as Vertigineux-she was awarded Broodmare Of The Year (KY) for 2009. For the year 2010, aside from Zenyatta, neither Vertigineux nor her daughter(s) produced a racehorse of note. I, however, agree with Springsmom83's criteria. As I offered on another blog, my vote would be for Pretty Discreet.
