Vertigineux was the runaway winner of last year’s MarketWatch Broodmare of the Year title as fans of her 2010 Horse-of-the-Year

re: Vote for MarketWatch Broodmare of the Year

Hats off to the ladies! That old saying; stallions make money, mares make babies, comes to mind! Blessed are the broodmares, they give so much. BTW, Avaknowsthecode got my vote!

My vote would have been for Mining My Own. After all she is the dam on Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird and now has the Blue Grass winner and potential second Kentucky Derby winner. How many mares have two grade 1 winners on their resume

Mookie's Hero

Had considered purchasing her-a long time ago-, as she was a good-looking daughter of one of my favorites, High Honors. Actually, of all Graustark's sons High Honors was probably my favorite, owing to his looks, pedigree and racing ability. He was a rather elegant Graustark, receiving some of that look from his highly accomplished and well-bred dam, but I also saw him as a leggy, taller version of Ribot, his grandsire. As I recall, he stood briefly at Darby Dan, KY, but was soon banished to Ohio. He never achieved much of a following, and I was surprised to read that he sired as many as 140+ offspring (pedigree query has him at under 50). Well, we can never be certain of such things, but my bet is that High Honors deserves the vast lion's share of credit for Teaksberry Road's success as a broodmare. So in retrospect I'd also posit that it's too bad that High Honors didn't receive better numbers and quality of mares, for if he had who knows how many top producers (and, perhaps runners by High Honors)by him would have existed.
