In addition, Secretariat's dam Somethingroyal was Lord Avie's great grand-dam. His grandsire Sir Gaylord was therefore a half-brother of Secretariat. It is interesting to note that Lord Avie in the 1981 Travers Stakes was close to 30 lengths behind and managed to still come in third, a spectacular feat. Also, Gallant Man lived to be 34 years old just like Champion Lord Avie.

These sorts of sires are the backbone of the breeding industry; no flash, no big breeding fees, just solid racing offspring, with the occasional star.

His dam Avie was a gem of a broodmare. She had 7 named foals; one colt was unraced and one filly was unplaced, although she later produced a colt who was second in the Royal Lodge S (G2) and 4th in the classic 2000 Guineas, as well as becoming ancestress of a slew of SWs in Puerto Rico. Of the 5 winners ---

champion Lord Avie

G2 SW Jolly Johu won only 10 of 73 starts, but he placed 2nd or 3rd a further 32 times, including in the Belmont S.

SW Avum won 10 of 34 and ran second in the G3 Barbara Fritchie; her descendents include Baroness Direct, Minneapple, Stephen Got Even, Private Man, and Xtension (2011 and 2012 G1 Champions Mile in Hong Kong).

Averell won 6 of 43 starts, placed in local Maryland stakes and ancestress of graded winners like Ellafitz, Ventana, and Primitive Hall.

Evastrive, won 2 of 34 starts, did not produce any registered foals.
