They are not the savior.. The small breeder's still will not make Breeder's Money just because purses go up. The slots the way it has been portrayed will not help the breeders... Just the horse owners racing in KY.... The standard to earn the awards need to be overhauled in the KY program.. The KY Breeders Program was set up for the big boys.. They are the ones that were on the board that set the thresholds. They were main influence on set the program... No one polled the small farms... The majority of the horses racing, bred and race, end up being claimng horses.. Check the entries at any track... 10 races carded, 7 or 8 claiming races on any day's card... And yes, even Keeneland and CHurchill n KY... Then they set the domicile rule that ruined the small farms boarding.. Their (small farms) clients have farms in their home state and most can't afford to leave mares in KY year round... The clients of the bigger farms are business people (most have money to play with) who don't own or run farms in their home states, so they have to board their horses...Why not n KY... You fail to mention that Ind. pays awards (owner, breeders, stallion awards) on a win from Mdn Cl, Alw, stakes, and any claiming race $7500 and up... PA pays awards (owner, breeder, stallon) for 1st thru 4th on any races in PA... W VA pays on all monies earned in the state of WV regardless of the type of race at Mntr or Charles Town... LA pays it awards on 1st thru 5th on any type of race in the state and 10% out of state... Like the KY Breeders Program issue, their has been little or no thought on the repercussion of slots on the KY horse industry...Remember that the owners of the Big Farms have interest or are on the boards of the tracks that will benefits from the slots... So sure they are pushing for it... Just beware... Slots are not the savior of the horse industry in KY.. It may be the dog that bites us in the a** when we aren't looking...
