Welcome to Nicanor: Tracking Barbaro's Brother

Anticipation has been high and no one is more excited than I am to tell Nicanor's story. We'll start from the beginning, so bear with me for the first few entries. I'm not going to plunge right into the colt's current situation. Instead, I'll start by providing some background information, interviewing those who knew him as a foal, weanling, and yearling. Then we'll follow his progress at Stephens Thoroughbreds and continue on to Fair Hill and the barn of trainer Michael Matz. If any of you have questions you'd like answered, please ask and I'll do my best to get the answers.

Thanks, and welcome! I hope you enjoy the ride.

Can't wait to read about & follow Nicanor's progress-he is a beautiful colt!!

Laura 29 Feb 2008 8:50 PM

Thank you for this book. Barbaro may be gone, but he is not forgotten. I would love to have gone to visit him (somewhere) this spring, but it was not to be. Barbaro appeared to be quite tall and was usually described as "strapping".  How tall was he and how much did he weigh? How does Nicanor compare to that?  Is he really the "little" btother?  Also Barbaro had lost so much weight during his battle with laminitis, do you know how much?

Robyn 29 Feb 2008 11:16 PM

Barbaro was the hero

America was longing for. Nicanor is the colt we long to follow, wherever his path may lead him--and us.

Thank you, Ms. Novak for allowing us to share his journey on this site. The very best to you!

Thanks for bringing us closer to Nicanor, Clair. I just hope that not too much pressure is put on him to mirror his older, revered brother, Barbaro. Thank goodness he's with Michael. He will only do what is best for this very special colt.

Thanks again, Pat

Ms Novak

What a wonderful idea to set up a Blog site for Nicanor fans.

I found out about this from a Buddy who posts at the FormBlog on the DRF site that Dan Illman over sees.

But, I'll be a regular here,too.

I am looking forward to see what happens with Nicanor.

I cant wait to hear more of the beautiful Nicanor, and watch him develop into his own self.  Run fast, Nic, but more importanly run safely always.

Lisa Leach 02 Mar 2008 4:12 PM

Thank you!  This will be fun to read as I have no background information about training a race horse.

JudyIL 02 Mar 2008 6:15 PM

I whish the Jackson's all the best with Nicanor. They loved Barbaro & went above & beyond to try & save him, they deserve another champ. The first time I saw Barbaro run was his second start & I knew from the way he hit the ground that he was something special. Barbaro was a once in a life time horse. Nicanor will never be Barbaro, but if he's half as good we may be in for a treat.

VP 03 Mar 2008 6:11 PM

This should be exciting!  Any fan of Barbaro has got to be a fan of "Nicky".  Hopefully, he will be a nice horse in his own right.

Louis NJ 03 Mar 2008 9:20 PM

I know he will do well. Wish him

all the best.

Patty 04 Mar 2008 8:31 AM

This is such a great idea.

Thank you for doing this so we

 can all follow along with

Nicanor as he begins his racing

journey. May God watch over him

 always..

Kathie 04 Mar 2008 12:25 PM

Thank You for Nicanor's Blog.  May he continue to carry out Barbaro's legacy.  I'm cheering for him.  Let's hope he wins the Triple Crown.

Lisa from KY 06 Mar 2008 2:46 PM

This is a great idea! You are a fun journalist to read. I  enjoyed your daily column on Saratoga last year. All Thoroughbred Lovers will look forward to following this special little guy and remembering Barbaro through his family.

Michelle 06 Mar 2008 4:52 PM

The UK's biggest Barbaro fan is following Nicanors every step. May every stride be a safe one and if you take your place in the Belmont, I will swim the Atlantic to be there.

Richard Carter 07 Mar 2008 7:46 PM

May your pastures be green and abundant and your water plentiful, cool and clean. May your people be kind, caring, knowledgeable and generous. May the ground beneath your feet be forgiving and may every step you take be swift and sure. May you stay safe and sound and live a life of comfort and happiness. We remember you Barbaro, Sweet Prince, as we remember every horse all over the world who often walks a harrowing path. All the best Nicanor.

Rhonda from Canada 08 Mar 2008 11:16 AM

with tears in my eyes i can only hope this colt, or any other one, never meets the fate his brother did...i am not an official fob but i ache for his pain and hope nicanor can and will win the tc.

merasmag 10 Mar 2008 12:15 AM

I have been following Nicanor for a while now all the way to going to Florida to see him, I like this blog , Thank You and post some pics LOLOL

Stephanie Lambert 11 Mar 2008 6:52 PM

Barbaro touched the hearts of so many so there is tremendous interest in his "little" brother!  This goes to show that there are  many people that truly care about the horses and not just about money, gambling and so on.  We'll be watching for you Nicanor!  And we'll love you even if you can't fill the shoes big brother left you.

carmncj 14 Mar 2008 3:15 PM

I am so glad to see that Nicanor is going to Matz stable! Barbaro couldnt have had a better trainer or owners and I wish his brother nothing but the best! Run on Nicanor, the roses are waiting!

Megan 17 Mar 2008 9:40 AM

With the huge size and tallent of Barbaro..I would love to see Nicanor  be a  beautiful true contender...!

STICKER 21 Mar 2008 7:27 AM

This site is a great idea! I have been hungry for news on Nicanor. It's hard to find anything. Claire, any little tidbit you find on him will be appreciated. Is it possible to go to the track where he is training and get a photo? He is so beautiful!

Diane 21 Mar 2008 11:47 PM

Hey Diane,

I know we're able to get photos once he gets to Fair Hill, but right now it's a little tricky since he's still at Stephens Thoroughbreds in Ocala. We'll see - I'm working on it!

cnovak 22 Mar 2008 1:35 PM

My thoughts and prayers are with Nicanor and Lentenor, for God to Bless both, with Health and Success in the Loving Memory of their Most Dearly Beloved Brother, "BARBARO!"

With Love and Warm Wishes,

Carol Marano (FOB)

Ms Carol A Marano RN New York City 24 Mar 2008 11:28 AM

I love this site!!

I'm really excited about Nicanor going to Fair Hill.

My thoughts and prayers will be with him.

Kath from SC 24 Mar 2008 7:42 PM

Nicanor is most certainly a very very special horse.  Let us appreciate him for who he is and let him write his own story - he is not Barbaro.  As much as we miss Barbaro it is important to respect this horse for himself.

Nicole from New York 25 Mar 2008 7:59 PM

I'm very anxious to hear about Nicanor.  I work with someone who's uncle is one of the farriers who works at Stephens Thoroughbreds in Ocala.  She was down there not too long ago and her uncle told her there was no getting anywhere near Nicanor.  He's under very tight security.  I guess there's so much interest in him being Barbaro's little brother.  I will follow him closely and hope in the end for nothing for him but health and a happy life.  Winning the Triple Crown would be gravy, but it's really not the most important thing for him.

Dale in Aiken, SC 26 Mar 2008 11:57 AM

Hello all!

What a wonderful site to read about Barbaro's little brother, Nicanor.  May God's light and vision keep him safe, healthy, secure and happy.

Have fun, Nicanor!

Nicanor

You are such a beautiful horse. I just hope they don't pressure you too much to be like your older brother Barbaro he was beautiful too. Your picture is the background on my computer!

P.S. this site is great keep up the great work!

Ashlee 27 Mar 2008 6:38 PM

Ms Novak

Can you list the names of the six foxhounds that are in the Jackson's painting (Barbaro's and Nicanor's namesake)

and is Lentenor another in the painting.

Thank you.

Hi Claire,

Do you know when Nicanor will arrive at Fair Hill?  I can't wait to see some photos of him.

Marilyn 02 Apr 2008 2:47 PM

Hello Marilyn,

My current information is that he'll be headed that way sometime around the end of April/beginning of May. We're working on the picture end, sit tight!

cnovak 04 Apr 2008 9:08 AM

Thanks you sooo much for doing this. My Granddaughter and I are waiting anxiously for new pictures as well as news on Nicanor and Lentenor. My granddaughter has a huge scrapbook on Barbaro and is starting one for the two brothers. We will be making a trip to Kentucky to see Barbaro's Memorial when it is finished. Best of luck to Nicanor and Lentenor may they he have a healthy, happy life.

L Naylor 06 Apr 2008 4:33 PM

Claire

Can't wait for him to get to Fair hill. Thanks for this blog.

Get lots of pictures of him!

Kath from SC 08 Apr 2008 7:40 PM

Claire: Thank you, thank you, thank you for the spectacular pictures of Nicanor. He is stunning

Lisa in Colorado 15 Apr 2008 1:01 AM

I saw the pictures of Nicanor - he looks SOOO much like Barbaro.  I wish him nothing but a long healthy life.  I hope he can go on and win the Triple Crown his brother didn't get to do, but even if he doesn't he's still a very special colt.  I'll be following him every step of the way.

Dale in Aiken, SC 15 Apr 2008 9:22 AM

P.S.   Barbaro WON'T be forgotten.

Aleine in VA 24 Apr 2008 6:16 PM

I am so happy that finally I can start hearing news of Nicanor. I would search the web constantly looking for news of him and could never really find much other then a few pictures. I am so excited about tracking Nicanor. May God bless him and keep him safe (a triple crown would be nice also)

Sue in Pa. 30 Apr 2008 4:28 PM

He looks just like his brother Barbaro, may god bless him with good health, success & racing luck to continue & finish the journey his brother would have done and win the triple crown next year.

God bless Nicanor & Barbaro forever.

BOBBY C in Elmont N Y 07 May 2008 6:13 PM

Beautiful horse.  Be healthy and safe, along with your other full brother and foal on the way. Two more full siblings of Nicanor to watch for in years to come.

Tricia K, what is Hatchery 1 if you don't mind the asking

Annie 10 May 2008 9:47 AM

How absolutely wonderful that Barbaro has a full brother!  I cannot wait to follow Nicanor's story. He looks just like his brother except for the blaze on his nose. He's a lovely, rich brown bay. He couldn't have a more marvelous trainer than Michael Matz!!

Julianne Libbea 13 May 2008 7:25 PM

My love goes out to Barbaro and his brother Nicanor and may God be with them both and their beautiful parents. Nicanor and Michael Matz will do beautifully together, what a team!!!

Julianne Libbea 13 May 2008 7:29 PM

I hope that Nicanor or Lentenor or all the others that at least one can follow Barbaro's hoofprints and pick up where he left off. One of them is sure to do it.

R.I.P Barbaro

Courtney 10 Jun 2008 1:28 PM

Marigold 23 Jun 2008 2:22 PM

FEELS LIKE THE START OF SOMETHING GREAT-HERE'S TO A NEW BEGINNING WITH NICANOR-I'M SURE BIG BROTHER IS RUNNING WITH HIM...

BILL/TERRYNY 26 Jun 2008 4:15 PM

Ready Set came in 3rd -- just a little longer and RS would have taken it, gaining rapdly.

MVH 13 Jul 2008 6:02 PM

See you at the 2009 Derby, Nicanor!

Susan, M.A. 28 Jul 2008 5:34 PM

Is Nicanor in training? Has he run? Where is he?

Charlotte 27 Aug 2008 10:57 AM

Thanks for adding the photo of Lentenor! I look forward to reading (and seeing pictures) about him as he follows in Nicanor's hoof prints and Nicanor continues to move on to bigger things.

Devora Berliner, Rancho Cordova 07 Jan 2009 6:43 PM

Good to hear that Nicanors doing fine, your doing good little man =]

CarrieLynn from Myrtle Beach 23 Feb 2009 12:33 PM

Its been so quiet since Nicky clipped his heel.  I hope he's fine.

Not every horse can set track records like Barbaro and Secretariat; but they can pass on their genes so we don't lose that great heart.
