Update on Showing Up

For those of you who have been seeking an update on Lael Stables' Showing Up, the jury is still out on whether the 5-year-old son of Strategic Mission will return to racing. He remains under the care of Barclay Tagg and, according to Roy Jackson, no decision has been made as to whether he'll come back to racing or retire.

According to Tagg, the horse was moved to a farm in Ocala, Fla. at the beginning of this week, and will be turned out there for an unspecified amount of time.

"It's still day-to-day with him; it's too late to make him a stallion this year, but if we can't get him ready for some fall races, I'd say he'd be retired," Tagg said. "He still has some nagging problems we want to get rid of."

Bred in Kentucky by Nellie M. Cox and Rose Retreat Farm out of the T.V. Commercial mare Miss Alethia, Showing Up made his last start in the 2007 edition of the April 13 Maker's Mark Mile Stakes (gr. IIT). In 2006, he won the Hollywood Derby (gr. IT), the Jamaica Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. IIT), the Secretariat Stakes (gr. IT), and the Coolmore Lexington (gr. IIT) in addition to the Colonial Turf Cup Stakes.

His last recorded work was a Jan. 27 six-furlong move in 1:13.80 at Palm Meadows Training Center.

Showing Up really seemed to be a nice turf horse. I hope he can get over his issues and return to the winner's circle.

Thanks for the update.  The Jackson's and Barclay Tagg are clearly doing what is best for the horse.

Thank you so much!  I have been wondering about him and trying to find out how he is doing.  It is such a shame he may not be able to race.

Once again, the Jacksons have proved themselves to be a class act by doing what is right for the horse.  Although, in all honesty, I would love to see Showing Up come back.  I personally feel that he could be a turf champion this year, if he can race.

Claire...I've read about other trainers saying this horse or that horse has nagging problems, but since Showing Up isn't a stallion yet I assume he isn't married. But I think I know what he means: I had nagging problems until I got a divorce.

Is that the kind of nagging problems Barclay Tagg is talking about. Or do horses that have nagging problems end up being called "nags?"

Could you please explain what nagging problems are? This is sure an educational blog.

Wilbur 23 Mar 2008 10:17 PM

When they talk about "nagging problems" what do they mean, no injuries, I hope

Eilene Wood 24 Mar 2008 2:48 PM

Hey guys...

Often, when a horse is dealing with a recurring injury or physical issue, it is referred to as "nagging," which Webster's defines as a persistant source of annoyance or distraction.

So, Wilbur, the problems Showing Up is experiencing have little to do with the nagging problems you dealt with before your divorce.

And Eilene, I know he had ligament issues before, not sure if that's related to what's keeping him off the track now. One thing's for sure - the Jacksons won't race him if he isn't 100% physically. Wish I could say the same for a lot of owners I know.

The Jacksons's and Mr. Tagg are class acts. We need more of these and less of the other kind.

Thanks for the update on Showing Up!

Hope he makes a full recovery for a long happy life!

Claire, is it true that you are the daughter of Robert Novak and that you only went into horse journalism because you misunderstood once when someone said your dad's job was to 'handicap the political horse race' and you wanted to be just like your dad?  Is that true?

Nic 27 Mar 2008 2:04 PM

Do we have any word when Nicanor will arrive at Fair Hill? I hope we will see a new picture of him with MM soon.

Jim 27 Mar 2008 3:33 PM

Nic,

That's too funny. Actually, what's REALLY funny is the fact that my father's name IS Robert Novak, but he's not THE Robert Novak. You don't know how many times I've had to explain that to people.

cnovak 27 Mar 2008 5:08 PM

Jim, last I spoke to Stephens Thoroughbreds he was still about seven weeks away from moving up to Fair Hill. So you'll have to wait a while for Michael Matz pictures!

cnovak 27 Mar 2008 5:09 PM

Yes, one thing is for sure, the Jackson's and Barclay Tagg only do what is best for the Horse. An owner can't do much better finding a trainer who cares about the Horse as much as Barclay Tagg. He learned at the hands of a master...Frank Whitely. I'm sure the memory of Ruffian is a big part of Mr. Tagg's training philosophy.

Bummer. I won $800 on Showing Up when he won the Hollywood Derby. He was automatic.

Wearing my blue Lael Stable "Showing Up" hat today, sad in the knowledge we will not see another installment in the Showing Up - Kip Deville competition, while knowing his retirement to the breeding shed done in his best interest. Please let us know where he will stand, as I will be honored to pay him a visit. May his first book be the beginning of many inspired ones. Heartfelt thanks to Mr. Tagg, the Jacksons, and all of Showing Up's connections. What a warrior who indeed always "showed up" and fired, to include that gritty 6th place Derby finish. The picture of Showing Up side-by-side "the other Lael Stable horse" that First Saturday in May-- spine tingling each time I think of it, much less look at it. TWO undefeated starters in the same field, same owners-- in a word- wow.
