Nicanor Works in Company

Nicanor worked in company with stablemate Rockland (Smarty Jones-Wiscasset, by Kris S.) at Fair Hill June 13, going three furlongs in :39.20 over the Tapeta training surface. The work was actually his second in company with the same horse - they went the distance together June 7 as well.

Later in the morning, Peter Brette discussed the work and Nicanor's progress up to this point. Brette was up for both of the colt's official timed works.

"We didn't feel the dirt track was riding as good as we wanted it to," he said. "He was on the Tapeta the other day anyway, so it was just the way it worked out. Physically he's pretty strong, but mentally he's such a baby. He's a big horse, but he's still putting it all together, doing everything we ask of him. He'll probably work three furlongs one more time and gallop out the half. Everything he's doing, he's doing right. I like him; he's a nice horse and I was pleased with the way he went today."

Thanks for taking such great care of Nicanor Peter.  I know you will be a wonderful teacher for him.  God Bless You.

Cassidy 13 Jun 2008 1:10 PM

Thanks for the update, Peter. Glad you realize that he IS still a baby and you're treating him with all the care he needs right now. He'll you back a thousand fold for the care given now. Hugz to you and all his connections!

Judi 13 Jun 2008 1:34 PM

I can't imagine a better place for Nicky to be than at Fair Hill with Peter Brette.  He's so much in tune with Nicky--I respect and admire him as a professional horseman more and more.  What a contrast to poor Big Brown--imagine what he could've done with Peter and Mike Matz! He deserved better, and you can always tell the real horse people from the phonies.  We are all eagerly watching and hoping for the best.  Thanks for the update and go get 'em Nicky Knocks!

KMustang 13 Jun 2008 2:35 PM

Watching Nicanor's development is going to be such a breath of fresh air!  It isn't just about the horse, but about the quality of the connections too!  Thanks for taking the time to update everybody!  GOOD LUCK and GO NICANOR!!

Roseann 13 Jun 2008 4:11 PM

Thanks, Peter. I love hearing about Nic. I know you will teach this kid well, and its good to hear that he is working hard and doing it right.

Lisa in Colorado 13 Jun 2008 4:49 PM

It is good to see the care and respect for the horse the Peter and Matz give to all their horses.  They are true horsepeople. I look forward to following Nicanor's progress.

Farley 13 Jun 2008 7:00 PM

Guide him well, Peter!

Karen, PA 13 Jun 2008 7:31 PM

Take good care of him, Peter.  We all love him a lot.

Daffodil 13 Jun 2008 8:58 PM

I'd love to watch Nicanor, Rockland (Smarty) and an Afleet Alex colt work. What a great job these guys have!!

Norma Jean 13 Jun 2008 9:31 PM

He is a Baby LOL, Just 2 years old and a big one too! He is so sweet, my favorite pic of Nicky is the one where he is being Pointed to and told to "be a good boy" at Stephens Thoroughbreds, it shows what a pup he really is still, he will get the hang of it and be wonderful, as he is already

sjl 13 Jun 2008 9:44 PM

I am so glad that Nicanor is in the hands of those that truly love and care him.I know he is going to be fantastic.

P.S.I hope he knows he is very popular!

Tracy 13 Jun 2008 10:47 PM

Hi Peter, So glad to hear Nicanor is a nice horse and that you like him. I was wondering if Nicanor is enjoying his training and does he give all the signs of being happy when he runs. Thanks for being so generous with your time and sharing your thoughts with us. Dona

Dona 13 Jun 2008 11:18 PM

I was surpised and delighted to see a new post about Nicanor.  I especially appreciated Peter's comments.

It's ok that he is a baby.  Sweet Nicanor will grow up when it is his time.  He is trying so hard to do what is right.  He has plenty of time.

I am so glad he is with the Jacksons, Peter and Michael.

He will be whatever he is suppose to be.  I have no expectations and will love him no matter what.

MJ 13 Jun 2008 11:33 PM

sounds like the right people have him.i hope with all my heart that nicanor is as good if not better than his brother.thank you peter for your heart

This column is great. I wish all of the public could read this, not just us. If the people could read this maybe they would understand the love and caring most horses have when they race.  Maybe a national paper like the US World Today or something similar could do a series on it. Spread the word, we love our horses and most get treated well.

Rggc 14 Jun 2008 10:48 AM

God bless Nicanor! What a joy to watch him grow up.  I wish him all the best.

THANK GOODNESS FOR YOU AND MR MATZ. THE JACKSONS ONLY HIRE THE BEST FOR THEIR HORSES AND YOU PROVED THAT WITH BARBARO.I JUST KNOW NICANOR WILL DO JUST GREAT WITH THE TWO OF YOU.

Thank you so much Peter, it means so much to many of us to hear about Nickie, he is so beautiful. He is also extremely blessed to have you and all his connections. I will love him no matter what he becomes, but of course we all think of his big brother, even though that is not fair to Nickie.

Barbara,PA 14 Jun 2008 1:41 PM

cool! he was with a Smarty baby!

horsesinky 14 Jun 2008 5:59 PM

Keep putting it all together, Nicanor!  As his mind matures to match his physical prowess, he'll just keep getting better.  He's got the bloodlines, the right trainer and exercise rider, and owners who care about his well-being.  What more could a promising young colt ask for?  I continue to pray that he'll make Barbaro proud.  GOOOOOO, Nicanor!

Mary Means (Warner Robins, GA) 14 Jun 2008 7:29 PM

Thank you Peter for the information on Nicanor's workouts.

We appreciate you, and all your expertise in training this young fellow.  Yes, he is a baby, and I pray he will learn a progress well.

Best Wishes,

Nicanor will be the NEXT Triple Crown Winner!

Debra 15 Jun 2008 10:42 PM

Thanks for the update on Nicanor.  Please take a good care of him.  I hope and wish he does well as his brother Barbaro.

M. Kern 16 Jun 2008 12:36 PM

I am always glad to hear news of Nicanor, and very happy that he is in good hands. I hope everyone will let him be who he is..he is not Barbaro nor should he be.

If he makes it to the Derby, I will

be thrilled....PLEASE let Edgar be the jockey! We'll all root them home...safely.

Barbara 16 Jun 2008 12:38 PM

Man, I cannot wait to see Nicky run later this year or early next-I'm drooling over the prospect!

BizBoy 17 Jun 2008 10:21 AM

Myfavorite picture of Nicanor is the one where he appears to be nipping at Grae Kennedy's face, shortly after he arrived at Fair Hill.  It looks like he is grinning at Grae and is really funny.  I suspect he is very playful.

Right, Peter?

Becky Boodle 17 Jun 2008 1:04 PM

It's so hard to wait for another update!  We are so hungry for information about Nicanor.  My question is, in what ways does Nicanor demonstrate that he is still such a baby mentally?Especially in light of the fact that he does everything that you ask of him and does it right? Can you elaborate?

BeckyB 18 Jun 2008 1:38 PM

On another site, the Stephens (Ocala, FL) reported that Nicanor is very serious on the track but very playful off the track.  Perhaps that is why Peter described him as being such a baby mentally.  Our beautiful boy loves life and the people around him.

We all love him right back!

Marigold 20 Jun 2008 2:42 AM

The idea that Barbaro has 3 full brothers is inspiring. Nicanor, Lentenor, and another on the way. That gives the public 3 chances to avenge Barbaro's tragic ending. All early indicators show Nicanor to be both intelligent and fast, but we don't yet have a handle on his competition. If he is great, and he may just be, the competition won't matter. In any case, we can celebrate his life!

Here is a staggering thought. Nicanor could be the next triple crown winner...and we already know. And how about this: Lentenor and his other unnamed brother will win the triple crown as well. What would those odds be? But reality may be more sobering, and we have to respect and care about the individual horses and their safety. Let's see Nicanor make it to the Derby...

Jon 21 Jun 2008 9:53 AM

It is exciting seeing Barbaro's family grow.  More important than winning is to keep them all safe.

Enjoy reading about Nicanor and his family.

Soc 24 Jun 2008 2:20 AM

Thank you for the updates on Nicanor & his training. I truly respect your patience and love for horses. May God Bless you, Roy & Gretchen Jackson, Michael Matz, & Edgar Prado. We love you:)

Patties Critters 26 Jun 2008 12:27 PM

I would love to see him race. I live about a half hour from Fair Hill, and volunteer every year at the races for Union Hospital. I followed Barbaro the entire time, and have his beanie baby plushie.(I even made a clay model of him...I must say it's pretty good) I'm also trying to get the breyer model of him on ebay because breyer decided to retire it *strangles*... *cough* But It would just make me happy to see Nicanor and Lentanor. They don't even have to be the best racers ever, I just want to see them run. Besides, the odds of finding another Barbaro are one in a million.

Savannah 26 Jun 2008 9:53 PM

Are you guys going to have Edgar Prado ride Nicanor because he is a wonderful jockey and that would be a cool tradition for Lentenor too?!?!By the way I am a HUGE Edgar Prado fan!!!!(smiles)

Eryn 26 Jun 2008 10:02 PM

After Nicanor completes the remaining tasks as mentioned above, what will happen?

Will we be receiving any more updates on his activities an progress?

We are starved for information!  we love him and all his connections!

MVH 27 Jun 2008 2:16 PM

Thank GOD for Peter, Michael and the Jacksons. Nicanor is beautiful and impressive, but the most important thing is that he will be well cared for and not be in the hands of people like the ones who own Big Brown.

Thanks Peter and Michael for your care and concern for the next generation of Super Stars!!!

Linda 28 Jun 2008 7:25 PM

Claire,

Will there be anymore information aabout Nicanor?  It has been so quiet lately!

Marigold 30 Jun 2008 1:04 PM

I read somewhere that the Jacksons were hoping to have a full sister in the mix, possibly the one after Lentenor. Making sure the family goes on, on both sides, male and female.  Can't wait to see these horses do their big bro proud. Michael Matz deserves another chance; he is the definition of a true class act. Thanks all~Terri

Terri 30 Jun 2008 10:41 PM

trainer:M.Matz always do a good job with other horses, and would be great to see the triple crown winner to be his trainee.. and would be sweet victory for Roy and Gretchen to continue the legacy of Barbaro thru the eye of NICANOR..  be the best Nicanor..good luck to all who support Barbaro and now to support Nick..

playdrace 03 Jul 2008 1:18 AM

I couldn't agree more. I am so pleased that Nicanor and Lentenor are in the graceful and capable hands of Michael Matz and Peter Brette. If I were a horse owner, they would be the ones that I would trust the most. Have any of you seen the movie The First Saturday In May? If not, check it out. Barbaro is one of the horses that is chronicled with the film. If you love horseracing, and Barbaro in particular than I know that you enjoy this film just as I did. You can purchase the film exclusively at TheFirstSaturdayInMay.com. Cheers!
