A Review

For those of you who routinely follow Nicanor and his progress, this post may not contain any new information.

However, because I continue to get general knowledge questions about the colt and his family, I thought it might be nice to do a review post that lists facts about him. That way, newcomers to Nicanor will be able to get answers to some of their questions all in one place.

Enjoy!

Great summary, but... has anyone had a stick on him?  How tall is Nicanor, please?

tbpartnerperson43 30 Jul 2008 3:02 PM

I never knew La Ville was bred to Deputy Minister.

Do you know when the new foal is due?

MJ 30 Jul 2008 3:09 PM

Tbpartnerperson43 - This is Peter's answer regarding Nicanor's size from last month:

Q. How does he compare to Barbaro as far as size and movement is concerned?

A. He moves beautifully. He's a bit smaller than Barbaro, probably about 15.3 or maybe a little taller than that.

MJ - Mill Ridge has not said what month La Ville Rouge was covered, so I do not know at this time.

aduckworth 30 Jul 2008 3:17 PM

I am very much looking forward to heaing about the wonderful progress of this horse and his family.

Dena Lentz 30 Jul 2008 4:12 PM

Thanks very much for the summary. All the info in a neat package. He seems to be coming along nicely.

I would be interested to know if the new foal would be named after one of the other dogs in the painting, be it colt or filly.

And thank you again for this blog. It has helped a great deal with the sadness that I've felt this year.

manowar4ever 30 Jul 2008 4:36 PM

Thanks so much for the blog. I have enjoyed reading it and keeping up with Nicanor. Barbaro brought me to the thoroughbred racing world and I hope that Nicanor will have a safe and healthy life, whatever he does.

Thanks again.

Nicanor has shot up in recent months.  Slewreigns has estimated on another blog that he is over 16 hands now (and he looks it) and is muscling out to about 1,115 lbs.  He is gorgeous and has presence and charisma and appears to be a confident happy young colt.  I pray for his health and soundness and the wisdom of his team.

MVH 30 Jul 2008 7:29 PM

THANK YOU FOR YOUR UPDATES ON NICANOR.  WE ALL WISH HIM WELL.  WE FEEL  SO CONNECTED TO BARBARO THROUGH NICANOR.  MAY NICANOR CONTINUE HIS BIG BROTHER'S LEGACY.

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK NICKY!!!

CHRIS 30 Jul 2008 7:59 PM

for what i could see they are not really looking foward to race him in the breeders cup juvinele, maybe they want to take him the same way the took barbaro. not to talk bad about a horse who have not even race before, but there is only one barbaro and for what i could see, i hope is not like the green monkey a disapointment. i really don't think he is going to win next year derby.

josue555 30 Jul 2008 10:19 PM

Thank you for the recap on Nicanor.

Cassidy 30 Jul 2008 10:24 PM

I love the updates on Nicanor. I hope he has a long, healthy life

surrounded by people who love him.

If he has glory on the track, so much to the good, but let it be his own. The interest in him is because he is Barbaro's brother, but he is NICANOR. He cannot, should not, be a stand-in.

Barbara 31 Jul 2008 9:00 AM

Anyone hear any recent updates on Lentenor??  Also, I was on Pedigreequery.com and Barbaro's pedigree and Lentenor's are listed but not Nic's.  I realize that it will be the same but does anyone know why this is??

Matt H. 31 Jul 2008 9:24 AM

Just wondering why he has not had a published work since 7/11, and hoping he's OK.

Della 31 Jul 2008 10:07 AM

Thank you for the update.   This handsome colt holds so much promise for so many.   He looks wonderful.  Am so looking forward to seeing his progress.   If he's not a sucessful as it is hoped he will be, it's for certain that he will be loved nonetheless.

Cheryl Jones 31 Jul 2008 11:10 AM

Great News that there will be another Barbaro sibling in 2009-hope it's a Philly this time!!!

SQ 31 Jul 2008 1:28 PM

MATT H  DOESN'T EQUIBASE HAVE THE 5-PEDIGREE PRINT IN THEIR PROGRAM?

SUGARBEAR 31 Jul 2008 2:00 PM

ManoWar:

The Jacksons have indicated their intent to use the remaining names from the Lithograph on Barbaro's family.  The remaining names are Margano, Sereno, and Calypso.

MVH 31 Jul 2008 2:26 PM

Pedigree Query's gonna fix it soon as I understand it.  I'm not sure anybody knew there was a problem so they probably appreciate the heads up.

Not sure the Jacksons can use Calypso.  Last time I checked it's already assigned to another horse.  They might wait til that one's free again but it might be awhile.  I hope they reserve the other names, some mean person might try to take them.

I wonder if the Jacksons will think about the Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf.  He might do like his brother and be better on that surface earlier, although it's on synthetic so that might not be as bad as the Santa Anita dirt tracks of old.  Still I'd rather see him in the Derby than the BCJ if I had to pick.  Better safe than sorry so if he's not ready he's not ready and that goes for the Triple Crown.  Best wishes to all of them.  I'm sure he'll be happy wherever his career takes him because he's with such nice folks.

Slewreigns estimates that Nicanor is 16+ now and @1,115 lbs.  He's clearly had a significant growh spurt since early May.  Photos of Nicky and Peter next to Michael Matz and his horse on July 12 show Nicanor to be as large as that horse (Messaging?) now. What is significant about tha is that that horse was bigger than Barbaro.  Nicanor is getting to be very big (and very beautiful).

Marigold 01 Aug 2008 2:32 PM

Love reading all that is written about Nicanor.  So he has not had works is fine, Michael knows what he is doing with him and bringing him along slowly to let the horse grow into his own.  Whether he is going to be an exceptional racehorse will be seen in the future but I just want him to be his own man, not just Barbaro's brother.  Win or lose I will be cheering him on regardless. Just want him to be the best he can possibly be for himself.

lobieb 02 Aug 2008 8:44 AM

Thank you so much for the updates.  I don't want to miss any news on Nicanor. I would love to be at his 1st race.  How will we know when that will be?

Linda S 02 Aug 2008 10:24 AM

I live about 8 miles from Fairhill, and I am at the track as much as possible to watch the horses work out.  It is awesome, the sound of the horses breathing as they cruise down the track is just amazing....Nicanor is a very handsome horse, I have seen him several times...He may never equal the great Barbaro, but that makes no difference as long as he is a happy, healthy horse....as I think of Barbaro I still cry for him, I used to see him at Fairhill, I saw him just before the Preakness, so very sad.....I also think of the great philly Ruffian.....she had never lost a race.....and then tradgedy.....all horses are very, very special, may god bless Nicanor...

DavidA 02 Aug 2008 9:11 PM

it stinks la ville rouge didnt have a foal this year, but she needed a break.cant wait for nicanor to start racing and lentenor to go to training.

pearly 02 Aug 2008 11:16 PM

I took a peek at Pedigree Query and noticed that Nicanor had been readded to its extensive list of thoroughbred horses.

And I think it is wonderful that so many baby pictures are being taken of Nicanor. How many horses have been studied and adored this closely over the years?

And I believe there would be an interest today in Nicanor even if Barbaro had not been injured. There is something very special about this family of horses. And I certainly don't think of Barbaro everytime I see a photo of Nicanor. No, what I think is, "oh wow, there is another picture of Nicanor!"

And when I think of Barbaro, I sometimes go to you tube and watch him win the Kentucky Derby. I never, ever watch Barbaro in the Preakness...makes my eyes too red and puffy.

Kathy 03 Aug 2008 10:00 AM

Why has there been no published workout for Nicanor in over three weeks.  Is he okay?

JoannB 03 Aug 2008 12:26 PM

Peter and Michael seem to be bringing him along slowly and attentively which can only be good for Nicanor.

We wnt to keep him healthy and sound and mature enough to race and race well, taking care of himself in the going.

He is very loved...

MVH 03 Aug 2008 11:35 PM

Wow - what could have been with a foal by Deputy Minister! Take a look at Rags, Curlin, and Ginger Punch. But - as long as Dynaformer is still dynamic, I'm glad La Ville is going to him and I sure would love to see a fancy filly! Good health, long happy lives to all of them, including Man in Havana.

DiaStu 06 Aug 2008 11:23 PM

MVH,

Thanks for your reply. Hope the Jacksons can get special "dispensation" for "Calypso" anyway. I think the tradition is great and have seen the Jockey Club allow some pretty odd (for them) exceptions over the years.

From everything I have read on the blogs that we have all been keeping track of, I am sure that the Jacksons and Mr. Matz will not race him before they feel he is ready. I would love to see him fly, but I'll wait. There is still all the time in the world for it!
