Some Other Dynaformers of Note

Because so many of you are interested in the family behind Nicanor, I thought I would point out three other horses by Dynaformer who are currently in the news. However, please remember, in the horse racing world they are not related to Nicanor even though they have the same sire. This is because they have different mothers.

First, I wanted to give some attention to veteran campaigner Perfect Drift, who will return to Turfway Park one more time this Saturday for congratulations and honors as he begins his retirement. The 9-year-old gelding consistently raced at the highest levels across his eight-year career.  From a remarkable 50 career starts, he posted 11 wins, 14 seconds, and 7 thirds and collected $4,714,213 in earnings.

Perfect Drift, who is out of the stakes-winning Naskra mare Nice Gal, raced as a homebred for Dr. William Reed’s Stonecrest Farm. He finished third in both the 2002 Kentucky Derby (gr. I) and 2005 Breeders’ Cup Classic (gr. I). At Turfway, he experienced some of his greatest wins, including the 2002 Lane's End Spiral Stakes (gr. II) and 2003 Kentucky Cup Classic (gr. II). His most notable victory came in the 2003 Stephen Foster Handicap, a grade I race in which he defeated eventual Horse of the Year Mineshaft.

Enjoy your retirement, Perfect Drift!

Update: Here is a photo of Perfect Drift with longtime groom Richard Anderson at Turfway Park this past Saturday:

Next up is a lovely 2-year-old filly named Rainbow View, who races as a homebred for George Strawbridge’s Augustin Stable. Although she was bred in America and is out of the grade I-winning mare No Matter What, Rainbow View is racing in England.  She has raced three times, is undefeated, and has victories in the Aug. 9 Skybet.com Sweet Solera Stakes (Eng-III) and Sept. 11 Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield May Hill Stakes (Eng-II) to her credit.

Rainbow View, who is pictured below at Doncaster, is expected to try group I company in her next start, the Sept. 27 Meon Valley Stud Fillies' Mile at Ascot. UPDATE: She won! Here is a link to the story: http://racing.bloodhorse.com/article/47288.htm (Also, another Dynaformer filly, Dynaforce, won the grade I Flower Bowl at Belmont.)

And finally, I noticed a purchase at the recently concluded Keeneland September yearling sale that readers of this blog might be interested in.  A Dynaformer colt out of the stakes-winning Dixieland Band mare Amelia was bought by Lael Stable for $500,000. I don’t know anything else about this guy, except that he is bay, but I thought he might be one you would be interested in for next year.

** Also, thanks to MVH for pointing out that Ice Road has been entered in the fifth race at Philadelphia Park this Saturday. It is a 10-horse field and scheduled to go off at 2:04 EST. Please see past posts for information on this Unbridled's Song colt, who has worked out in the past with Nicanor. UPDATE: He scratched. Lots of rain, again.**

Judy B 25 Sep 2008 5:31 PM

I just want to echo the author's comments: Enjoy your retirement Perfect Drift!

MRO 25 Sep 2008 5:52 PM

I really missed something, what happened to Go Smarty Go.  I know he was pulled up after the race but have heard nothing since.

lobieb 25 Sep 2008 6:38 PM

I have to ask, how is Nicanor?

MJ 25 Sep 2008 7:41 PM

Thanks for the great information.  It is always fun reading!

Lisa in Colorado 25 Sep 2008 8:41 PM

Rainbow View is absolutely lovely!  Dynaformer makes beautiful babies.

MVH 25 Sep 2008 10:50 PM

who is go smarty go ?and what happen ?

jen jerome 25 Sep 2008 11:51 PM

Perfect Drift deserves a wonderful retirement.  Any news about another Dynaformer horse, McDynamo?  He retired last year after an unprecedented steeplechase career.  How's his retirement going?

seattleslewfan77 25 Sep 2008 11:58 PM

Thanks Amanda for the Dynaformer information. Perfect Drift was a grand old warrior in the racing world. We don't have many like him any more and I was glad to hear he will spend the rest of his life in grand style at his owners farm . Great picture of Rainbow View, she looks like she has Dynaformer's build. I love to know all about Dynaformer offspring and nicks. It gives me fodder to dream about Nicanor and Lentenor and the ultimate mating choices that will ultimate come their way. It is too bad that Dynaformer didn,t really have the selection of mares he deserved until Barbaro brought him commercial fame. One thing (among many) about the Jacksons is their breeding interest in the Roberto and Mr Prospector lines and their choices of yearlings i.e. the Pulpit filly and the Dynaformer/Amelia colt seems to follow this pattern. Look at Showing UP's pedigree and you'll see what I mean. He has speed, distance and staying power in his pedigree. Everything that seems to be with Dynaformer and La villa Rouge. While their are no guarantees in any mating, it sure helps to have proven performance in your family line. I for one try to follow every Dynaformer offspring and Lael horse that I know of. Am always glad to hear anything relating to them. Sure will be glad to hear Nicanor is back in training. Can't help worring about him and hope he's doing well.

Dona 26 Sep 2008 1:13 AM

hi, can anybody tell me what happen to go smarty go?

josue555 26 Sep 2008 9:17 AM

For those asking about Go Smarty Go, he is a colt being followed in the blog Maiden Watch. ( cs.bloodhorse.com/.../thursday-rumblings.aspx )

Here is an excerpt:

Go Smarty Go (Smarty Jones - Sarah's World by Holy Bull), who was pulled up after winning a maiden race on the turf on September 21, suffered a condylar fracture in his left front. He had surgery and the prognosis is good, but he is unlikely to race again.

aduckworth 26 Sep 2008 9:40 AM

What a lovely filly--she is a feminine version of her dad. Dynaformer certainly seems to consistently get quality horses. My prayers to Go Smarty Go and his connections.

Kbuckeye 26 Sep 2008 11:19 AM

If possible, since it is not easy to pull up charts of foreign races, please post the result for Rainbow Views race at Ascot this Saturday. Thanks!

Cigar16 26 Sep 2008 1:28 PM

I am happy to report that Go Smarty Go will be just fine, and is expected to return to the races as a 3 year old he broke one of the bones in his front leg it was nondisplaced and he had surgery to repair it.

darlene 26 Sep 2008 5:02 PM

Rainbow View is an unbelievable filly. She's the best 2 year old, including colts, seen in Europe this year. The picture captures her beauty at it’s best. I hope she wins the Fillies Mile tomorrow and goes to the Breeders Cup!!

JOSE93 26 Sep 2008 5:30 PM

My entire family enjoys the updates on Nicanor. We also like other info the author posts. Additionally, we enjoy looking at the comments, questions, and answers that readers post. I've gotten very interesting info on horses and the industry that I was not aware of before, so I want to thank the blog's author as well as the readers who have left, and continue to leave, comments, including inquiries and answers to questions raised by other readers. Keep it up! The blog continues to be enlightening and fun to read.

Jennifer 26 Sep 2008 6:05 PM

OMG that filly is just breathtaking! Dynaformer and LaVille Rouge must be the best. They just put out the most beautiful horses wether together or apart.

Renee 26 Sep 2008 6:08 PM

aww that's no fun seeing a colt win his first, and then get hurt. i do wish Go Smarty Go a fast recovery and the rest of Smarty's babies luck in their races.

SmartyJonesLuvr04 27 Sep 2008 1:58 AM

It appears that Ice Road was scratched at Philadelphia. It didn't specifically say, he just was. Michael knows best though.

I checked and Rainbow View apparently has won 3 of 3 in her race career and she is only two. Apparently Dynaformer fillies mature faster, or at least this one than their half and full brothers. Still, I will wait, even if it takes forever...I hear a song coming on...for Nicanor. Hopefully Michael or Peter will soon update Amanda on Nicanor's progress. The pins and needles I am sitting on are killing me..

Kathy 27 Sep 2008 1:05 PM

Congrats Rainbow View! The filly won again today very easily, might I add. She is very talented and beautiful.

Lyssa 27 Sep 2008 2:04 PM

Welcome back, Amanda.  We missed you.

MVH 27 Sep 2008 2:18 PM

THANKS AMANDA, YOU DO A GREAT JOB KEEPING US INFORMED ABOUT NICANOR AND BY EXTENSION, OTHER DYNAFORMER OFFSPRING. YESTERDAY, RAINBOW VIEW WON THE FILLIES MILE AT ASCOT & ANOTHER DYNAFORMER DAUGHTER NAMED DYNAFORCE, WON THE FLOWER BOWL AT BELMONT. UPSETTING MAURALAKANA. IT LOOKS LIKE RAINBOW VIEW WILL RUN IN ONE OF THE BREEDERS CUP RACES.

LEAL STABLES OWNS SOME VERY NICE MARES AMONG THEM, VALBENNY & PRECIOUS KITTEN WHO WILL PROBABLY BE RETIRED AND BRED NEXT SPRING. THEY ALSO OWN BORDIGHERA, A DAUGHTER OF ALYSHEBA AND THE DAM OF GEORGE WASHINGTON.

ALTHOUGH YESTERDAY WAS A GREAT DAY FOR RACING, POOR ICE ROAD CANT CATCH A BREAK, SECOND SCRATCH DUE TO HEAVY RAIN.

MDFANOFRACING 28 Sep 2008 5:35 AM

Tvg Horse Racing channel shows International Racing night and day. Watched 6:00 a.m. saturday and saw Rainbow view win. Sure is a nice filly and I saw Dynaforce win in the afternoon. Maybe since Dynaforce came over here and is doing well, Rainbow View might do the same. Just now heard that Evening Attire has retired. What a great old warrior he was. Ten years old and still going strong. Loved that old guy and am sure glad he's going to enjoy the rest of his life well taken of. Thanks old man for the memories. In watching I learned Lael owns Valbenny. When did that happen? She is a real nice horse. Seems like the Jacksons have bought a lot of good mares lately.

Dona 28 Sep 2008 2:54 PM

i'm curious! why aren't the races

on tv.. curlin's last 2 races were

ignored by the sports world. not

on tv. not mentioned in sports

reports in the newspapers or on

the sports broadcasts. if it wasn't

for bloodhorse.com how would be know anything about the sport of

kings....

nmh 28 Sep 2008 5:49 PM

Lael Stables and the Jacksons are the cream  of the crop.  Nicanor is magnificent and a very sweet boy.

Michael and Peter and Edoardo and Grae are the very best.  Nicanor is a very fortunate boy in the very best of hands.  We all are so hungry for information about him.

MVH 29 Sep 2008 12:12 AM

I second that sentiment, mvh. Does anyone know the website of Lael Stables (email address) ?

sandieh 29 Sep 2008 12:46 PM

THEY, THE JACKSONS,  BOUGHT VALBENNY AT THE KEENELAND 2007 NOVEMBER SALE SAME WITH PRECIOUS KITTEN.

MDFANOFRACING 29 Sep 2008 4:11 PM

What can you tell me about McDynamo's retirement? Do you know where he is living and how he is doing? He was one of my favorites!

BarbaraF19 30 Sep 2008 5:57 AM

Thanks for all the updates.  Love to hear about all the Dynaformers.  Has anyone heard what happened to Silver Swallow, she was eased at Santa Anita last week but I have not been able to find out if she is okay or not?

Michelle 30 Sep 2008 12:09 PM

Michelle - According to the race chart, Silver Swallow walked off on her own power.

aduckworth 30 Sep 2008 2:26 PM

I have "met" Dynaformer on a few occassions and have to say that he is a huge, rawboned type of stallion with lots of attitude!  He was the only stallion (besides an ailing Seattle Slew) at the time that they would not ride each morning due to his toughness.

They have had the utmost respect for Dynaformer at Three Chimneys - even before Barbaro.  I always remember they said that he could be bred to just about any type of mare and come out with a runner who could win on any surface, was sound, and had that extra "heart" that all great racehorses have.

Kelly E. 30 Sep 2008 4:38 PM

As I have mentioned before, I believe that had Dynaformer been an easier going horse, he would have been a superstar on the track. I mean, can you imagine a horse looking D Wayne Lucas in the eye and saying, "you want me to do what? Sorry D Wayne, but I don't feel like it today." It says that assistant trainer Kiaran McLaughlin did a lot of his training. And from what I've read Kiaran thought Dynaformer was a tad (very) difficult.

Dynaformer is a great horse in every other area except of course his temperament. I am curious. Does he allow anyone in his paddock? Is Dynaformer friendly with anyone? Does he allow a groom to enter his stall to brush him? In other words, how does one care for a horse with attitude other than very carefully?

Kathy 30 Sep 2008 5:26 PM

I may have spelled D Wayne Lukas' name wrong in previous entry. And if I did, I am indeed sorry.

Kathy 30 Sep 2008 5:32 PM

aduckworth - Thanks so much for the info about Silver Swallow.

Michelle 30 Sep 2008 8:24 PM

That was certainly true of Barbaro and may well be true of Nicanor, as well.  My hunch is that it is and Michael and Peter realize that and they are taking the utmost care with him,  thank God.

MVH 01 Oct 2008 1:15 AM

Does anybody know the status of the Dynaformer - Preach yearling purchased at the 2007 Keeneland September sale?  He may have been the second highest price last year.  Any info on his name, work tab, trainer, owner...anything?  Thanks!

EasyGoerFan 01 Oct 2008 7:50 AM

EasyGoerFan - He has been named My Vision. John Ferguson, who buys for Sheikh Mohammed, signed the ticket.

aduckworth 01 Oct 2008 9:03 AM

Once again, Ice Road is scheuled to run at Keenland on Saturday. That is all Virtual Stable reported.

MVH 01 Oct 2008 2:32 PM

ice road? keeneland? polytrack? headed to santa anita maybe? just speculation but maybe this colt is heading for the juvi if he does well at keeneland. Thats a hell of a jump for a second outing but hey, he is by Unbridleds Song and he is Breeders Cup nominated.

MDFANOFRACING 01 Oct 2008 4:28 PM

ice road is in the 5th race at keenland on friday a maiden special weight 50k purse

MDFANOFRACING 01 Oct 2008 4:31 PM

Kathy - I understand that Dynaformer does have a groom that he tolerates.  Most stallion grooms know that you need to respect the power of these animals and never turn your back on them.  I was told Dynaformer bit someone's finger (it wasn't a visitor...it was a horseman or perhaps groom of some sort) clean off a long while ago.  As for riding him at Three Chimneys, well...they had the devil of a time getting the tack on him and earning his cooperation - so they just gave up after a while.  He certainly has that "don't mess with me" look in his eye.  Perhaps that is what adds to the competitive spirit of his offspring.

Kelly E. 01 Oct 2008 4:56 PM

I love Dynaformer.  I would love to see him bred to better than honour....or has that happened?  I cant wait to see Nicanor!!!

Dan Omaha 01 Oct 2008 6:31 PM

Lots of big name trainers for that Maiden Special weight?  Matz, Pletcher, Asmussen, Motion, McGlaughlin, and D. Wayne Lukas.

Stakes-like connections for a MSW.

brettzky99 01 Oct 2008 9:03 PM

Thank you Kelly E for giving us a rare glimpse into the life of Dynaformer. I have often wondered how an agressive guy like Dynaformer managed to have such reasonably mellow offspring, at least in the case of Barbaro, Nicanor and Lentenor. LVR probably had a hand in the mellowness of her offspring.

It interesting that as dangerous as stallions can be, the only one that doesn't get ridden is Dynaformer at Three Chimneys. I suspect Dynaformer was a handful from day one. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Kathy 02 Oct 2008 12:43 AM

What was Ice Road's firt outing and how did he do?  I thought he'd been scratched twice and those were his only two entries.  Keeneland -- hopefully it will be televised.

MVH 02 Oct 2008 2:19 AM

If Dynaformer is so tempermental, how come his offspring are so good natured?  Do they get their personalities from their dam?

Marigold 02 Oct 2008 2:21 AM

Better Then Honor is in the Keeneland Nov sale catalog, she is not in foal. MVH, i was speculating. Tomorrow is his first start, but like Bretzky said, lots of big name trainers for a maiden special. His second could be in the juvenile at SA if all goes well for him at Keeneland.

MDFANOFRACING 02 Oct 2008 3:07 PM

I spent an hour in Dynaformer's barn this past July.  He had a very intense look about him but he was not misbehaving at all.  There was a groom in the stall with him and he didn't do anything out of the ordinary other than not duck under his neck.  They have a system to get him to cooperate.  There's a little pan with some sweet feed in it right by his stall door.  When he is to be taken out of the stall, the groom unlatches the door and holds the pan up toward Dynaformer.  As he eats the feed, the shank is snapped to his halter.  When he gets down to his paddock, the process is repeated.  There's a little pan of feed down there too.  Dynaformer walks into his paddock and then is turned around to face the gate and offered the feed.  As he eats it, the shank is removed from his halter and the gate is latched shut.  In his mind, he's making out like a bandit.  He gets a bit of sweet feed every time he's expected to go from one place to another.

EasyGoerFan 02 Oct 2008 3:35 PM

To the person who asked-Go Smarty Go was pulled up after his victory and vanned off the track.  Turns out he had broken his cannon bone and has already had surgery and last info I had was that he was recovering.  No word on whether or not he will race again in the future.

djb8 02 Oct 2008 5:02 PM

Could you check if Lentenor has gone to Florida yet?

MJ 02 Oct 2008 6:36 PM

Correction:  Ice Road's race is tomorrow (Friday), at Keeneland and not on Saturday.

MVH 03 Oct 2008 12:37 AM

Ice Road ran 7th and didn't look so great on the poly.  Hopefully, he just didn't like the track and will run lights out on the dirt next time.

DerbyFan 03 Oct 2008 9:39 PM

Ice Road didn't win but hopefully he learned something today and came out of the race okay. Better luck next time. Just read an article by Liz Brown about Navigator and his recovery from Ataxia. His owners Suzanne VanderSalm and Ellen Bennet deserve to be recognized by the iGreatndustry and everyone else that cares so much and does everything in their power to save the horse. Maybe if we showcase owners and trainers like this more often, there will be more attention and pressure on those individuals that are so heartless greedy. Thanks Liz and thanks bloodhorse. Made my rainy California day.

Dona 03 Oct 2008 11:06 PM

Thank you for all the updates on all the different horses.  I'm still waiting for Nicanor to make his debut.  I'm on pins and needles!  When's he going to race??

Chris 04 Oct 2008 6:33 PM

Just to let anybody know that Ice Road finished in 7th place on Friday at Keeneland.

JK2008 05 Oct 2008 12:38 AM

I would say that if all stallions get sweet feed to easily move them from one spot to another, then Dynaformer is being coerced into good behavior; which is not necessarily a bad thing. If he is one of only a select few stallions to receive this treatment, then it is a prerequisite for him to behave and he is coercing his keepers. And don't get me wrong, belligerence is not necessarily a bad thing. If you didn't have belligerence from fauna and folk, diplomats and grooms would have no one to practice diplomacy on.

Kathy 05 Oct 2008 1:36 PM

MJ, Lentenor is not scheduled to go to Florida til the middle of this month.  He'll go to Michael and Peter in the Spring, as Nicanor did.  Then next year at this time, we'll all be waiting for him to make his first race.  The new colt is due to drop in late February (I read that somewhere).  He'll probably be Margano, since that is the next name on the list.

MVH 05 Oct 2008 9:47 PM

Worked with Barbaro, and if you called his temperment mellow, then Dynaformer is the devil himself. I personally thought Barbaro got his momma's looks and his daddy's um lets say "spirit."

Jennifer 06 Oct 2008 7:24 AM

A few years ago one of the Three Chimneys grooms told me that he got along fine with Dynaformer because he was predictable.  In other words, if the groom did the same thing every single time, Dynaformer would respond in the same way.  If something was changed, Dynaformer would not behave.  The groom said there were stallions at other farms who would be fine with something one time and freak out and go crazy another time.  Those were the stallions he feared the most.

Kathy, I don't know if other stallions get the sweet feed in order to have a shank attached or removed, but it works for the Big Guy at Three Chimneys so they are probably not going to argue with him.  :)

EasyGoerFan 06 Oct 2008 8:44 AM

Dynaformer's disposition is in line with most Roberto line progeny.  Remember "Rock Hard Ten", of the 2004 3 yr-old vintage;  couldn't touch Smarty Jones, but an awesome looking horse with a serious attitude.  Sired by  Kris S., by Roberto.  That horse (RHT), in my opinion, is almost a spitting image of Dynaformer;  and is having a great start to his career as a stallion, although I would bet he is also a challenge for the grooms.

brettzky99 06 Oct 2008 12:17 PM

If you go to Lane's End website, and then Three Chimney's and look @ Dynaformers confirmation photo versus that of Rock Hard Ten.  It is like looking a the same horse, with Dynaformer a little lighter in color.

brettzky99 06 Oct 2008 1:03 PM

Seattleslewfan77 --

Here is a nice video update on McDynamo. Fans of With Anticipation will also enjoy it...

www.bloodhorse.com/.../4F28A098-08D6-42A9-A41A-C091F7322EDC.htm

aduckworth 06 Oct 2008 3:43 PM

I tend to use words for effect sometimes. Even a novice like me knows that thoroughbreds cannot be categorized as mellow. What I was trying to get at was Barbaro's short career record was far superior to his father Dynaformer's career. If Dynaformer had been a tad bit more cooperative, I believe he would have gotten a few more wins under his belt before they retired him. I simply believe Dynaformer is also superior, but he must have been a devil to train and Barbar was less so.

It will be interesting to see if Nicanor and Lentenor are chips off their old man in terms of their personalities.

And brettzky99, I did the Dynaformer and Rock Hard Ten challenge and you are right, they could be twins.

Kathy 06 Oct 2008 4:32 PM

aduckworth - you'r the one. Wonderful video of McDynamo. Thank you

Dona 06 Oct 2008 10:00 PM

If Nicanor (or any other horse) works out at Fair Hill, are they required to post information on his workout?  Or can he be working out and we are just unaware that he is?

Cassidy 07 Oct 2008 10:48 AM

Each day I hope for another update...

It's been 2 weeks!

KC 07 Oct 2008 7:48 PM

Away, dam of Eight Belles, produced a colt earlier this year by Dynaformer. Wow, youngster is half-brother to two Kentucky Derby winners. Any news on this young Dynaformer colt?

sandieh 08 Oct 2008 6:28 AM

Cassidy - If Nicanor has an official workout, it will be reported.

aduckworth 08 Oct 2008 12:24 PM

While kinship terms such as "brother" or "half brother" are not used when referring to offspring of the same sire, it is obviously incorrect to say that they are not considered to be related. A stallion's success as a sire is based on the performance and  reproductive success of both their male and female offspring, which are tracked very closely. If anything, many people feel that sire lines are too often emphasized at the expense of female families.  And note all the commentary here about shared characteristics of "Dynaformers"

Personalensign 08 Oct 2008 1:30 PM

Personalensign -- The reason they aren't considered siblings in the Thoroughbred world is just because a stallion has so many offspring each year, it would serve no purpose using the term. It is recognized that they are related, don't worry!

aduckworth 08 Oct 2008 2:43 PM

Go to Fair Hill TRaining Center website and click on Jim Coarse and then Fair Hill and click on Nicanor Summer 2008 and enjoy the wonderful photos of our darling boy.
