Lentenor's New Life

After settling into his new life at Stephens Thoroughbreds near Ocala, Fla., Lentenor has taken to being ridden quite well.

“Lentenor is jogging in the field now,” said Jill Stephens. “Now he seems to really like being ridden. In fact, he is more relaxed and comfortable riding out in the field than he was in a more enclosed area.”

The yearling Dynaformer colt will continue in this routine for about another week, and then he will start going to the track.

“The next step is training on the track and just continuing to build on his conditioning and confidence,” said Stephens, who added the colt doesn’t have any quirks. “He's a lover...that's how we like them here.”

Lentenor still sleeps outside in a paddock with a buddy every other night. During the day, he comes in to train, gets a bath, and then either goes to his stall or back outside, depending on the day.

Sounds like Lentenor is on his way to being to be quite a horse. Both he and Nicanor are special.

Tracy 04 Dec 2008 10:06 AM

I am happy to hear that Lentenor is another sweetie like his brothers. Mom's DNA must come into play with the Dynaformer brothers because I don't believe Dynaformer was ever a sweetie. Thanks for the update Amanda.

Kathy 04 Dec 2008 11:20 AM

sandieh 04 Dec 2008 11:58 AM

This is wonderful news.

Lentenor stole my heart when he was just a week old due thanks to a video someone shared of him with his mom, Laville Rouge.  Thoroughly enjoyed seeing the little fella having that much fun at such an early age.

Thanks so much for the update.

GinnieJ 04 Dec 2008 12:23 PM

Thats Wonderful News

I Cant Wait To See Him Race

leah 04 Dec 2008 12:43 PM

Thank for all the updates.  You don't know how much they are appreciated.  It's good to hear that Nicanor and Lentenor are doing great.  They're both in such good hands.  Can't wait to see our Nicky race.

Chris 04 Dec 2008 1:11 PM

Thanks for the update-it's great to hear some positive news!

Laura 04 Dec 2008 1:55 PM

I still can NOT belive they ride yearlings.  Oh my gosh!  What a travesty.  No wonder they break down so young & so horrendously.

RaceLuvr 04 Dec 2008 2:01 PM

Thank you again, Amanda!  Sounds like our beautiful boy is a natural!  These brothers just fill our hearts! With the new brother due in February, there's so much to look forward to!

Marigold 04 Dec 2008 2:04 PM

Thank you for the update.  Sounds like Lentenor is healthy and happy!

LindaVA 04 Dec 2008 2:06 PM

Barbaro wasn't a sweetie. Maybe I'm wrong but didn't he kick Michael Matz before the Florida Derby? (I read that in Prado's book.) And he was very exited while being saddled at the Kentucky Derby too. But obviously I loved him as we all did and every great horse has its quirks. Whirlaway was tempermental and over here in Europe, Zarkava crashed into the safety rail at the start of the Arc and also jumped a shadow in the middle of a race as a 2 yr old. She still won.

Thanks for this amazing blog and I hope Lentenor enjoys his training!!!

Majella from Ireland 04 Dec 2008 2:19 PM

Yeah a Lentenor update! Picture please!?! Keep him safe and sound and he'll be a crowd fave like his brother. He's already special, i wish him nothing but the best

Lady Ruffian 04 Dec 2008 3:37 PM

Thanks so much for the update on Lentenor. He is showing the results of having good people around him at every stage of his life. And to those who think he is too young to be ridden--Thoroughbreds mature faster physically than other breeds. Just as people benefit from weight bearing exercise, so do equines. It is important to his well being physically and mentally.

Kbuckeye 04 Dec 2008 4:01 PM

Yeah, I've heard Barbaro had his moments. I wasn't aware of Michael Matz getting kicked. But my motto has always been and always will be: With some notable exceptions, do not speak ill of the dead. It tends to inflame the masses. This is just my philosophy. And I am sure that had Dynaformer kicked Michael, Michael would have required surgery or at least caulk to fill in the hole. (I mostly remember Barbaro injured at New Bolton, where although he was probably on pain meds, appeared very docile.)

Kathy 04 Dec 2008 4:44 PM

Majella,  Barbaro was a sweetie when he would lie down while at New Bolton.  Mrs. Jacksom said you could do anything to him then.  At the track he was all business.  Michael always said he was like.."let's go!"

Thanks for the update on Lentenor.  It will be interesting to hear how he likes the track.  I am glad he likes to be riden.  He likes the wide open spaces.  He will love Fair Hill.

MJ 04 Dec 2008 6:55 PM

Majella, yea, he kicked MM, but I think that was because he was suprised by some water falling on his legs. Normally they wont kick out purposefully to hurt somebody.

LyndaP31 04 Dec 2008 8:56 PM

Kathy ROTFL!!!!! :O) As big as Dynaformer is, he would have gotten him in the head!!!

LyndaP31 04 Dec 2008 8:58 PM

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!! sounds to me like a smart head on nicanor and lentenor. Hope the best racing careers ever! Because BIG BROWN has a heart to and a good mind. LOVE PAL

pal 04 Dec 2008 11:19 PM

Good to hear Lentenor is adjusting well to his new surroundings and routine. I just checked the workout tab for Nicanor and nothing since that 3 furlong work in mid November at Fair Hill. I sure hope he is ok. I guess the old adage, no news is good news, holds true. Still, I would love to see him working out, at least then we would be able to somewhat monitor his performance and ability. Could be that MM is letting Nic adjust to the climate and his surroundings before he puts him to work. All this waiting sucks, but im sure MM knows what he is doing.

mdfanofracing 05 Dec 2008 10:03 AM

Please don't take my comment in a bad way. I didnt mean that he was a nasty horse- just that he could be spirited. My pony bucks some times when he's happy but I still class him as calm I meant the same thing with Barbaro.

Majella from Ireland 05 Dec 2008 10:52 AM

This is the sibling to watch for!!

SQ 05 Dec 2008 11:22 AM

Wonderful news.  It is really great to hear that Lentenor is doing so well. Keep of the good work Michael and team. .

RhondaH 05 Dec 2008 12:40 PM

And Majella, no offensive taken with your comment. I hope there is no offense with mine. I really have no direct knowledge of Barbaro's disposition other than second hand. Of the three brothers, I believe Nicanor is the one that upon meeting you on the street, would extend a hoof and then while quickly removing said hoof, would say "gotcha."

Kathy 05 Dec 2008 2:33 PM

Thanks so much for the update on the baby.  It sounds like he and his big brother are a couple of great horses to be around.

Marilyn 05 Dec 2008 2:48 PM

any pictures coming our way of lentenor working like we got of nicanor?

Jennifer 05 Dec 2008 6:26 PM

Thanks Amanda for such great news. Couldn't help wondering how he was progressing after the last update. Loves to be ridden and is a sweetie is all we need to know. Just returned home from my big L. A. adventure and had a wonderful time. Saw Zenyatta, got great pictures of her along with the free poster from Hollywood Park. What a beautiful filly she is. Took real good pictures of Precious Kitten and was arms length from Edgar Prado (got his picture too) as he approached a group of FOB's and signed for them. I was standing there with a camera, kicking myself for not having my race program or something else with me. What a nice man he seems to be. Hopefully he will have the mount on Nicanor and Lentenor if and when they race. Hope everyone had a good holiday, I sure did.

Dona 06 Dec 2008 3:47 AM

Wow--I just read this update-Thanks for keeping us informed about the "brothers". I'm so glad that Lentenor likes to be ridden. Please post some pictures if you can?.

Kath from SC 06 Dec 2008 8:03 PM

I thoroughly enjoy the updates on Nicanor and Lentenor and would like to thank the Jacksons, Mr. Matz and crew and Stephens Farm for allowing us these insights.  While I hate to be a wet blanket, I feel compellednto reply to two of the letters written here, as some readers seem to forget the privelege that we are being allowed in being kept abreast of these two animals.

To Laura:  Breaking in a thoroughbred is commonly done when they are yearlings.  It is NOT cruel, nor does it result in breakdowns to which you refer.  It happens late in the yearling's life, usually in the fall, and the horse is, at first, merely saddled and tacked to get him to accept the equipment.  After several weeks of doing that, a rider about the size of a jock will climb aboard the horse, usually in a small round pen, and ride it for maybe 5 minutes, usually at a walk, progressing to a slow trot.  Remember, most of these horses are very independent; if one waited until the horse were two or three to do this, the nature of the horse would be to reject the situation, become aggressive and assert himself, and THAT is when an injury can take place, both to horse and rider.  There is no cruelty involved in this situation whatsoever.

To Leah:  We all loved Barbaro, but unless you are personally paying the thousands of dollars monthly for the upkeep and training of Nicanor, I would ask you kindly to remember that he is NOT "our" horse.  It is only through the graciousness of the Jacksons that we have been invited into Nicanor's world.  It is they who are bearing the burden of the financial responsibilities, and intrusions into his daily routine can be disruptive to the horse and the people working with him.  Please remember that it is not your right to this info, but rather the generosity of his owners and trainer that allow this insight.  Please respect that.

For those of you who asked to be kept updated of both horses' works and, eventually, their race schedules, please go to www.equibase.com and register for the free virtual stable.  You will receive automatic e-mails of every official work and race entry to these (or any other) thoroughbreds.

Kathy, you are correct, and thank you fo that observation.  I apologize to both Laura and Leah.  My reply was, instead, directed to both Raceluvr and Chris.

Nancy 07 Dec 2008 2:06 PM

Think Lennie gets his attitude from La Ville Rouge. Dynaformer was never the sweet.

Nice to hear an update on him!

Paintmare06 07 Dec 2008 10:08 PM

I am very grateful to the Jacksons, Michael Matz and team, for allowing us into the lives of Nicanor and Lentenor. I thoroughly enjoy being kept up to date on their progress. I hope they both do very well in their racing careers. It would be marvelous if one or both were to win the Kentucky Derby, let alone become a Triple Crown winner. Some more recent pictures of the boys would be wonderful. Thanks again......

Holly 08 Dec 2008 12:47 PM

I used the term "our" as well with respect to both of these young horses.  It is more a sign of affection rather than a sign of ownership.  I of course do not own either of them, I just love them and in that sense, they are ours to love and care about.  Always grateful for any information about each of them.

Marigold 08 Dec 2008 2:19 PM

glad lentenor is doing so well. sounds like the folks at stephens thoroughbreds know how to take care of their horses. more people should follow their lead

christy tate 08 Dec 2008 5:17 PM

This one!  As a baby, he was the cutest thing ever and so full of joy!

Now, he is gorgeous and has a look in his eye and a presence that suggests great things.  Watch out for this one!

Marigold 16 Dec 2008 2:46 AM

It's wonderful that Bloodhorse is allowing Barbaro's fans to follow his brothers.

Lentenor is absolutely Beautiful!

Linda 16 Dec 2008 10:44 PM

Thanks for the tip on Equibase's virtual stable.  I also have a stableAlert with Bloodhorse.  Does anyone know how to get updates on Lentenor?

tahmont 19 Dec 2008 5:04 PM

I just love hearing about Lentenor and Nicanor. I know it will be so exciting to see them run their first race.
