Nicanor to Make His Debut Jan. 31

Nicanor has been entered in a maiden special weight race at Gulfstream Park Jan. 31. The one mile contest for 3-year-olds on dirt carries a purse of $40,000.

As expected, Edgar Prado is scheduled to ride Nicanor. The Dynaformer colt drew post position 4 in a field of 12. All horses will carry 122 pounds. Local post time will be about 4:43 p.m.

Nicanor's debut will immediately follow the Holy Bull Stakes (gr. III) and immediately precedes the Donn Handicap (gr. I). He has been installed as the second choice with morning line odds of 4-1. The morning line favorite is Dubinsky at odds of 7-2.

The bay colt has been working steadily toward his first start, and trainer Michael Matz had indicated he would race either the last weekend of January or the first weekend of February.  The homebred colt is owned by Roy and Gretchen Jackson, and he is a full brother to Barbaro.

To see the full field, please visit www.equibase.com. HRTV airs racing from Gulfstream Park and is covering the race, for those wishing to watch it on TV.

Also, please make a note that CBS News will air a feature on the colt and his connections Jan 29. It is scheduled to air at the end of the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric. Check your local listings.

In other news, HRRN announced Jan. 29 that it will broadcast Nicanor's race. For more details, visit http://news.bloodhorse.com/article/48993.htm?id=48993

Let's go Nic!  Good post position for his first start.  What kind of running style will he have?  Front-runner, closer or stalker like his brother Barbaro.  I hope he sits right off the lead and when Edgar says lets go at the top of the stretch, he pulls another "Seabiscuit"!

k.w.j...........n.c. 28 Jan 2009 3:18 PM

Aw... :( Im really excited but I won't get to watch it on TV because there is no racing channel in Ireland that shows Gulfsream... If it was at Tampa I would have seen him run... Does anybody know a website where I could watch it for free? Maybe someone will put it on youtube?

I'm so excited, the story of Barbaro has touched fans all over the world, not just America. Ive been tracking this blog since the summer and I love it and all the American racing.

Go Nicanor! I was 12 when Barbaro won the Ky Derby and I wasnt interested in American racing then. But now I'll get to follow his brothers! Good luck and stay safe, Nicanor! Is post position 4 good or bad? Does it put him at any disadvantage?

Majella from Ireland 28 Jan 2009 3:18 PM

I hope the video gets posted here. Go, Nicky, go!

ElonGrad97 28 Jan 2009 3:19 PM

GO Nicanor.

John K 28 Jan 2009 3:19 PM

Congratulations to the Jacksons, Michael Matz and the team in getting this horse race ready.  With Edgar Prado slated to ride Nicanor in a race sandwiched by the Holy Bull Stakes and the Donn Handicap one gets the distinct impression that a stellar performance awaits us.  Could Nicanor's run eclipse both graded stakes races?  This could be worth going miles to see.  More power to Gulfstream Park.

Ranagulzion 28 Jan 2009 3:20 PM

BEST of luck Nicanor!

We'll all be rooting for you!

Melissa 28 Jan 2009 3:20 PM

GOD BLESS NICANOR AND EDGAR PRADO. IM SURE BARBARO IS WATCHING OVER YOU! LOTS OF LUCK..

HRTV only, the Donn and the Holy Bull are not on broadcast TV.  If you don't have HRTV I'm sure it will be on YouTube quickly after the race ends.  Go Nicanor! Good luck to Matz, Prado and the Jacksons!

Karen, PA 28 Jan 2009 3:55 PM

Go Nicanor and Edgar!!  In my area, OTB replays the races around the country or Sportscenter channels might have the races on a live broadcast for those of you to check out.

Deby 28 Jan 2009 3:59 PM

Majella:  I stated earlier if you have a computer go to http://www.youbet.net and d/l their racing program as they show all the races at Gulfstream.  Even if it is a betting outlet you DO NOT have to bet.  They have play betting that you can do if you don't actually want to bet and they show each race.  Hope you can get it on your computer.  Go Nicky Knocks.....I am actually going to make a bet for this race.

DARLA 28 Jan 2009 4:26 PM

Hello to all! Barbaro's plight drew me to this website, and I continue to check-in for progress on his brothers. I have learned much about racing through this blog, so thanks to everyone for their comments. I have always watched racing, but my interest increased watching Secretariat win the Triple Crown, a beautiful thoroughbred he was! I have become

obsessed with Barbaro's connections, and will continue to follow the "boys" through the years. May Godspeed Nicanor and Prado on Saturday, may he and Lentenor show the world that "family" can do it, with their bloodlines. Go Nic Go!

horsenut23 28 Jan 2009 4:36 PM

Nicanor  good luck.  You are in the best of hands and the most important thing is for you to just stay safe! You will always be loved no matter how you do on the track.

stardust 28 Jan 2009 4:37 PM

KMustang 28 Jan 2009 5:38 PM

What an exciting day of racing at Gulfstream!!  I am so thrilled that Nicanor has developed to this point to be ready to give it a shot.  He has grown up into a beautiful horse and his works have showed a steady progression, so let's just hope he understands what his new job is, that he likes it and has that desire to win.  It wouldn't be entirely unusual for him to need a race or two to figure it out, but I am sure hoping he will get right into and decide to come home a winner.  That being said, whether he wins the race or not, I will be hoping for a safe race for all.  Thank you for sharing this news!  Go Nicanor!!

txhorsefan 28 Jan 2009 5:44 PM

TVG doesn't broadcast Gulfstream races.  HRTV does.  HRTV isn't available  on Comcast Cable. VERY frustrating...

Marigold and Majella--We don't get TVG or HRTV on Charter Cable here in north Texas, but we pay a small monthly fee for "youbet.com" on the computer. It's simple to set up an account and no betting is required. Is that helpful to you?

Karen in Texas 28 Jan 2009 6:44 PM

Hooray!  Good Luck to you Nicanor, you have the best jockey and trainer anyone could want.  Good Luck to the Jacksons and God Bless them for being such savy and loving owners.  I will be glued to the set on Saturday afternoon.

Hallelujah! So many of us have waited so long for this day.  No matter how Nicanor finishes, just watching him fly will recapture that feeling of joy for so many fans and the connections of Barbaro which lost that great champion two years ago tomorrow.

What a beautiful moment of hope, anticipation, and redeption it will be.

Zenyatta2009 28 Jan 2009 7:16 PM

This is just so exciting! I wish the race were broadcast on television. Perhaps this blog will post a video or references as many, including those who may watch over the net, or even get to go see, it will want to see Nicanor's race over again! Also thanks so much to this blog site for keeping us fans informed and best of luck to all of Team Nicanor!

Well, for now I just hope he wins this race and stays sound. It'd be awesome if he makes it to the Derby, but if he doesn't that's fine too. Doesn't hurt to hope though.

Very exciting to see he has arrived safe and very well prepared for his racing debut.  Looking forward to Saturday very much as is everyone else.  I don't care where he finishes as long as everyone is safe and he gets good experience.  Go Nic Go!!!

Let's all hope he handles the surface, the crowd, the other horses and the confusion. These are babies still and can't really be expected to behave like Curlin in the Dubai World Cup. Let's hope for a great learning experience for Nic.

I would love to see the race but for some reason TVG doesn't show races from Gulfstream, the Fairgrounds or Santa Anita...and HRTV is not available on Direct TV

AnneM 29 Jan 2009 1:04 AM

You people need to get a life. Not one person on this forum knows a damn thing about horse racing. You're all obsessed with a dead horse just because he broke down in a triple crown race. If he didn't break down and got beat by Bernardini then he would be long forgotten just like Strike The Gold and Sea hero just to name a few. I'm so sick of all the bandwagon jumpers out there. BTW Nicanor won't even hit the board. Thank God!

Tim 29 Jan 2009 1:24 AM

I hope he gets blown out.  I am sick of this love affair.  He finishes dead last.  Yeah!

lopeper 29 Jan 2009 2:14 AM

I am so excited along with the rest of you. For some time, I was uncertain whether or not Nicanor would run. I am anxiously awaiting his first race on Saturday. I will be at Santa Anita on Saturday and do hope that they show it on the big screen in the infield. I will pray for a safe and magical trip for Nicanor and Edgar. Take Care Everyone...

Come home safe Nicanor!  Barbaro will be running right beside you.  You'll do great!  Hope to see you at Keeneland in a few months.

Good Luck.  The race doesn't always go to the fastest.  It goes to the one with the most heart.  You can do this!

Best Wishes to the connections of Nicanor on his debut this Saturday.  Barbaro and all his fans will be behind you every step of the way!

The Real - Debbie In Texas 29 Jan 2009 7:53 AM

For the people who seem so aginast Nicanor, I just have to ask what is your problem?  People are interested in a horse and in horse racing.  Isn't that a good thing.

By the way if he is last, we won't care.  We will be just as  excited the next time.

Nicanor is having his first race on a really big day and I just think the entire situation might scare him.  Most of the competition has raced before.  This is just his first step.  He has an entire year to get better.

MJ 29 Jan 2009 8:55 AM

Tim,

Please advise as to why this horse won't hit the board.  I don't know whether he will finish 1st or 12th, but his work pattern has improved sequentially over the last 6 weeks.  Also, his 2 strongest works have been from the gate.  Isn't this what you would want to see in any maiden??  If Barbaro is insignificant as you suggest, what is it about this horses pedigree or published work tab that would lead someone to believe he won't hit the board?  If you know anything about horse racing, you would know that it is VITAL to this industry to attract casual fans, which this blog does. What reasons do you have to substantiate the poor performance of this colt; he has been in the top tier of the workouts of the respective distance at the most elite training facility, during the winter.  None of the competition has ever won, and most likely not finishes second---why bet against him?

brettzky99 29 Jan 2009 9:05 AM

Barbaro is in my thoughts today on this 2 yr anniv. of his passing.  I look forward to Nicanor running this Saturday.

Cassidy 29 Jan 2009 9:26 AM

Nicanor has been training with Rockland and Magical Affair per M.M. in DRF. And he is also a Dynaformer so here is hoping that all of Nicanor's team preparation, plus his daddy's bloodline will take away any jitters that Nicanor may have at his first race. Good Luck Nicanor, stay safe.

Kathy 29 Jan 2009 9:38 AM

God speed Nicanor....what a very proud moment, I saw a picture of this awsome horse yesterday in the local paper, I thought of Barbaro..yes, there were some tears in my eyes...Edgar Prado, what a class person, I am getting ready to read "MY GUY BARBARO".....Go Nicanor, just do your best, that will be good enough...looking forward to seeing you back at Fairhill this spring!!

MARIGOLD, I have Comcast cable and HRTV thru Comcast. It was the best 9.99 a month investment I ever made.

DONNA 29 Jan 2009 9:56 AM

Two years ago today, at about 10:30 am, America cried. Today, I still have tears for this rememberance. This Saturday, we all have something to be excited about, Edgar and Nicky Knocks, May God bless you both with a safe trip and win or lose, we have the utmost love and respect for you.

sandieh 29 Jan 2009 10:15 AM

On this Sad two-year anniversary of Barbaro’s euthanization, It gives me Hope that his brother will carry on Barbaros's Legacy, and, I only wish and pray he has a safe trip, but deep in my heart, I believe Nicanor is and will be the bright light horse racing needs, and also to all you naysayers, Don't you have anything else to do in life?, You show me any other horse that has this many fans and well wishers, you can't, because there is not any out there, You should embrace Nicanor and his fans due to the fact that horse racing NEEDS this kind of excitment right now, So bottom line, constructive comments are fine, but if you are a fan , then embrace Nicanor and wish the best for him....Go Nicanor & Rockland...

Greg J. 29 Jan 2009 10:30 AM

I just have to add that today I counted 30 newspapers who have added an article or a note about Nicanor's debut.  These papers don't cover horse racing at all.  For a struggling sport, this is great news.  The Jacksons have provided free publicity to a sport that really needs it.  Hats off to them.

MJ 29 Jan 2009 10:33 AM

I am happy they are putting him there but would he be better suited in a stakes race.  But those people who think it is redemption for edgar hold the phone what i am most concerned about is that post position he is going to have to get out of the gate good.  Edgar is going to have to move quick and i also had to laught looking at the sheet because i don't think there compation in this race if he looses then what?  How bad is that going to look?  Don't get me wrong i wish edgar all the best and good luck nicanor but i really would like to win this.

MATT H. 29 Jan 2009 11:07 AM

Tim, why do you come to a board dedicated to Nicanor, the brother of "a dead horse"?  Just go elsewhere.  This is for those of us who loved Barbaro and love Nicanor and Lentenor.  You are clearly out of place.  Go find your place.  You are the one who needs to "get a life!"

MVH 29 Jan 2009 11:08 AM

I agree with brettzky99 why are you so down on the poor horse Tim? I think it's great to have a site for people that got interested because of Barbaro. Maybe racing will get new fans and maybe some of these people will support charities because of Barbaro.

Tim your dead wrong that all these people no nothing about horse racing, but at least some of them are trying to learn. You could have stated your opinion in a nicer way than you did. Do I think that he's the second coming of his brother? No I don't but I'll watch the race cause it's on the same card as the Holy Bull and the Donn.

Matt H: He was entered where he should be entered in a maiden race. If he runs thru his conditions he may run in stakes but that's the trainers call if the horse is good enough and moves forward every start.

Wanda 29 Jan 2009 11:13 AM

Hey Tim, bite me.  Your comments are stupid.  If you don't have anything nice to say on the blog, don't comment.

Deby 29 Jan 2009 11:24 AM

Brettzky99 asks “why bet against him”?

Because he’ll be colossally overbet and his trainer is 4% with first time starters.  I’ll look for Wesley Ward’s first time starter Boyhood Dream and/or Dubinsky for Patrick Reynolds.  If Frankel’s horse gets in, I’d like his chances first time on dirt.

Hoping for a safe trip for all, but I’m also hoping to make some money.

a bettor 29 Jan 2009 11:32 AM

Tim,

Go be negative somewhere else and quit displaying how pathetic you are on this blog.

Tracy 29 Jan 2009 11:35 AM

Hey Tim & Lopeper,

If you don't like a show change the channel - if you don't like the music change the station; or is that too much for you to comprehend??

Brettzky99 hit the nail on the head - this sport NEEDS fans and if this horse feeds that need then eat up!

SMARTY JONES RULES 29 Jan 2009 11:44 AM

IMHO, We will begin to see the racing comparision between Nic & Barbaro, when he breaks from the gate & where he settles in, hopefully right behind the speed up front. All 6 of Barbaro's races were he was just behind the speed. We should know after the first couple furlongs.

Safe Trip Nicanor..All Fob's are pulling for you & Edgar..GO NICANOR GO with the wind.

As Roy Jackson said recently, if Nicanor is half as good as Barbaro, it will be a miracle.  Barbaro was a once in a lifetime horse for small players in this vast business (Lael and Matz).  On this sad anniversary in particular, for me this young untested horse is a reminder that life goes on.  And if Barbaro had run second to Bernardini in the Preakness, he would have come right back and whupped his butt in the Belmont.  People who do know a lot about racing thought Barbaro was something special.  I don't expect Nicanor to reach those heights but he is a sweet reminder of the racing team who gave us one special horse and the biggest Derby margin of victory in 60 years.

Grey K 29 Jan 2009 12:00 PM

Matt H,

He belongs in a Maiden Special Weight, not a stakes race.  A stakes race would be too tough for him, mentally and physically.

You can ruin a horse if you put him in a race over his head.  A confident horse will often beat a superior horse--we want Nicanor to build his confidence off his first race, not be demoralized by facing too tough competition in his first race.

He has so many challenges to meat on Saturday.  Even if he did eventually belong in a stakes race, he has so much to learn.  This is no 5 furlong work with one lead change.

JAJ 29 Jan 2009 12:01 PM

Such great publicity for this sport.

Good luck to Nicanor.  Such pressure for his connections.

MJ 29 Jan 2009 12:12 PM

Matt H.--Neither Barbaro nor Curlin started in stakes races their first time out. As Wanda noted, the special conditions races are a way for the trainer to gauge the needs of the horse as they go forward.

Karen in Texas 29 Jan 2009 12:19 PM

I think it's pretty funny how "Tim" tells us all "to get a life" when he sends his dumb comment in at 1:24 in the am?  Who needs to get a life now Tim?!!  To trash the horse on a special blog regarding Barbaro, Nicanor and Lentanor is pretty annoying.  Let Nicanor get through his first race.  All the Barbaro fans out there are pretty happy that this is finally happening and it doesn't matter if he loses.  Maybe we will have a new hero in Nicanor.

Deby 29 Jan 2009 12:45 PM

Wanda.  Don't pay attention to people that say negative things about Nicanor or Barbaro. We all know that Barbaro was the best and without him, horse racing is really lost.  Nicanor is his little brother and even if he doesn't win, it doesn't matter.  He is still loved and still will bring on the fans.  No other horse can do what Barbaro's brothers will do with the people horse racing fans or not.  Horse racing would end if Barbaro's brothers weren't in the sport.  They keep it going.  These people that put down Barbaro are just mad cause they never had and never will have a horse like him.  Miss you big guy. Stay safe Nicanor that is all I care about.

stardust 29 Jan 2009 12:56 PM

Tim- I probably know as much about racing or more than you do so go away if you dont like the subject.  Cant people be excited about something these days?  NO he is not Barbaro but he is his brother, and that is something to bring people to the track, then more power to him.

Jen 29 Jan 2009 1:00 PM

Two years ago today at just about now, the whole world was lost and in tears.  Barbaro was and still is loved by everyone.  He was an amazing horse with an amazing owner, trainer, jockey and doctor.  Sorry all of you that don't understand this.  Nicanor is the most loved horse in this nation and has been ever since he was born.  As is Lenntanor.  Without them, horse racing may as well bite the dust.  We love you Barbaro and you are the best.  Always were and always will be.

stardust 29 Jan 2009 1:01 PM

Best of wishes to Nicanor. Run fast, be safe, and enjoy being a racehorse. I can't wait to see the results, although it certainly does not matter whether he wins or loses.

MRO 29 Jan 2009 1:10 PM

Barbaro, two years ago today I fell to pieces for a hero I never met.  You changed me forever, and gave me a passion for a sport that brings me so much joy.  Give Nicki roceketed wings on Saturday, and keep his feet strong and off the ground. You are forever unforgettable, and here's to Nicki for simply being Nicki.  Something to believe in.  For all of us who "get this Barbaro thing."

Zenyatta2009 29 Jan 2009 1:15 PM

A bettor,

I am not so sure he'll be that overbet. His following is substancially sentimental, and there will be alot of mid-level handicappers trying to find a price against him.  You may be correct given his trainers 1st time starter percentage, but as I stated before to near bullet works from the gate (actually one was the bullet from the gate that day); usually a strong indicator for a maiden (although admittedly more so if the distance was shorter).  With the little I know about the field, my thought is Dubinsky will go off as the favorite.  I don't know how good the horse is, but my broader point is: in my opinion, I haven't heard one good reason why the horse won't perform. His recent workouts  don't suggest it, nor does his bloodstock.

brettzky99 29 Jan 2009 1:37 PM

Stardust & Brettzky99, WELL STATED !, Godspeed Nicanor......

Greg J. 29 Jan 2009 1:55 PM

How appropriate that Nicanor is racing this particular weekend since today (Jan.29th) is the 2 year anniversary of Barbaro's passing!  I am SO upset that TVG doesn't telecast Gulfstream but I'll be watching the CBS evening news tonight to see Katie Couric's story!

Be safe Nicanor!  The world will be watching and cheering you on.

CarolinaJude 29 Jan 2009 2:18 PM

Morning Odds are 4/1 on Nicanor. They will be under even money at Post Time.. GO NICANOR GO...

CountFleet 43 29 Jan 2009 2:21 PM

Two years ago today, I couldn't stop crying over the loss of Barbaro.  However today, I can't stop smiling, thinking about Nicanor and Edgar racing in just two days!

Nicanor and Edgar, have fun Saturday, and we'll be rooting for you both!

GinnieJ 29 Jan 2009 2:28 PM

Carolina Jude,

Tvg can't show the race, unless on tape delay due to contractural issues with HRTV, which have exclusive rights to GP racing

The Rock 29 Jan 2009 2:46 PM

CarolinaJude   I don't think that this is a coincidence.  I am sure God has a hand in his "timing factor".   Yeah it is kind of neat.  I just pray for his safety above and beyond everything else.  He could not be in better hands. Baby Nicanor have fun Satuday and know that you have the best piolet on you.  Edgar will not let anything happen to this new number one horse of the Nation. Big brother Barbaro will be watching over you every second.

stardust 29 Jan 2009 3:10 PM

Stardust, I agree that George Washington should never have started in the 2007 Breeders Cup Classic. But I don't think it was greed. It was a tragic accident thar could have been prevented. George Washington finished reasonably well in the 2006 Classic and they decided, after he failed at stud, to have another crack at it.

Horatio Nelson was another O' Brien horse and he fatally broke down in the 2006 Epsom Derby. Minutes before the race they thought the horse was injured but they decided to run. It was a terrible decision but it is very, very easy to point fingers afterwards. Aidan O' Brien is regarded as a living legend in Ireland. He isnt greedy, nor are the owners, as far as I know.

And I think its a well established fact that the connections of Eight Belles were not greedy. No way. I think PETA has already demostrated how easy it is to point fingers after a tragedy.

But, yes, you do have a point because some owners are greedy. But not the ones you mentioned.

Majella from Ireland 29 Jan 2009 3:11 PM

Can we vote for craziest and most detached post on this message board? If so, Stardust wins hands down.

Racing does not "need" Nicanor. It is a nice story, yes. And I don't wish anything bad for the horse (other than to finish fourth, gotta make that money). The only way that Nicanor will make a big difference in racing is if he freaks and becomes a superstar (highly unlikely).

Stardust, come join reality. Racing is not in existence today because of Barbaro's brothers, and will not end if they don't do any good or if they never race. And two years ago, the world wasn't lost, it was getting ready for the Super Bowl (losing Barbaro was sad, but that's just the way it was). And railing against the "greedy owners" of GW and Eight Bells smacks of ignorance. Those horses were in races where they belonged and encountered horrible accidents (Bells was one of the freakest accidents I have seen). The great racehorses want to win, their owners and trainers race them to win, and their jockeys ride them to win. That is the sport. Horses are not great because of who they are related to, they are great because they win. Doesn't mean we can't love the horse (the horse I have owned were slow), but let us keep in mind that yes, his connections will push him to win, it is why he was bred, it is his purpose on earth. This horse is not great because he hasn't won yet, and won't be great unless he wins. Stardust, you were right. Winning isn't everything, it is the only thing.

ace hare 29 Jan 2009 3:44 PM

Absolutely right.  The finger pointing after Eight Belles was exploitve and tasteless.  I mean congress (of all people) were going to investigate Bob Clay of Three Chimneys for inbreeding the horse thru Mr.Prospector--like thats a rarity.

brettzky99 29 Jan 2009 3:53 PM

I am SO excited!! I get to go see him at Gulfstream!!! GO NIC GO!

Tati 29 Jan 2009 4:11 PM

Stardust,

Injury is always a risk whenever a horse works or races.  Blaming Eight Belles and George Washington's breakdowns on owner/trainer greed is untrue, unfair and uncalled for.

Believe me, Nicanor's owners, trainer and jockey will be trying to win the race.  If he is in the mix, he will be pushed.  A rider could lose his license if he didn't try to win the race.

Remember, pushed doesn't mean abused.  There is a good chance that the rider will at some point go to the whip.  Just remember, a horse has a REALLY thick, tough hide.  It is not the same as you or I getting smacked with a riding crop.  Most crops are pretty thick.  The thicker, the less sting to it.

You'll know how hard the race was on him by the reports on whether or not he ate up his dinner.

JAJ 29 Jan 2009 4:14 PM

Sometimes the truth hurts and people lash out.  I am wishing for Nicanor to run safe and sound.  Coming home safe is better than not coming home at all.

stardust 29 Jan 2009 4:31 PM

Godspeed, NIC!!!Run like the wind, 'cause you know Big Brother will be watching over you....

Good luck, Mr. and Mrs. Jackson and the entire Team. I am so excited and happy for all of you.

Susan from Pocopson 29 Jan 2009 4:36 PM

STARDUST, the running of Eight Belles in the Derby had nothing to do with greed. It was all about giving a very talented filly a chance to win the Derby as she proved she was second best of a 20 horse field that were the best three year olds we has in this country at the time. I cried for two solid hours after she broke down and never beleived and never will that she had no businees in that race. As for Nicanor if he wasn,t ready to run Micheal won not be running him. I hope he runs well but if he doesnt win they will be another time. After all he has a field of eleven others to contend with. I personally do not think he is a Green Monkey. Also I was glad to hear they have set a time for Barbaro's memorial statue to be unveiled at Churhill April 26th. Hoping to be able to attend.

DONNA 29 Jan 2009 4:58 PM

Ace hare,

Racing is declining in popularity.  Purses and races are being cut.  Those are facts.

So, lets give the sport a little fun and some publicity.  Those are good things.

MJ 29 Jan 2009 5:00 PM

MJ  You couldn't be more right.  I don't think that people have any idea just how far downhill it has gone.  Nicanor is a bright light to finally bring joy back to racing.  If he wins, great, if not, so what?  At least he will be able to be a horse.  He couldn't be in better hands.

stardust 29 Jan 2009 5:10 PM

People,please get a life!

Forthegipper 29 Jan 2009 6:53 PM

Ace,

You seem to be a knowledgeable horseman, but you really think racing doesn't need Nicanor and others like him????  Racing may not "end", but if things continue along the path that it is on, racing will be in dire straits imminently, in its current form.  Nicanor has brought in national publicity for a MSW, and as long as he runs safely, the industry gains.  I disagree completely that he has to win to make a difference.  The industry constantly is losing purse, till, and sponsorship cash.  If a serious attempt to focus on the horses and  control catastrophic injuries is not made, the current decline will accelerate.  It has to be controlled for the survivorship of the sport as we know it. Win, Place, Show,  Exacta doesn't attract advertising or new fans, and the good ole bettors can't bet enough apparently (if they did every smaller track wouldn't have to install a half-a--d casino). The sport was in decline during good economic times, and the worst is ahead obviously.  Profiles of  horses with good stories, win or lose that can attract positive media attention on a larger scale is necessary.  If this doesn't happen, the best way to make money via horse racing will be shorting all the gaming stocks that own racetracks.

brettzky99 29 Jan 2009 7:32 PM

Another good story about Nicky-Knocks on ESPN.com you all should read it.

lobieb 29 Jan 2009 7:33 PM

CBS National news had a feature on Nicanor and his debut this Saturday.

There is an article on this video on CBSnews.com. They had it on at about 6:45pm (CST), Thursday, Jan. 29.

Go, Nic!

horsenut23 29 Jan 2009 8:12 PM

Hey everyone, there was a story on CBS national news tonight about Nicanor.  I haven't checked their web site yet, but it may be posted there.  Good pictures!

Tennessee Girl 29 Jan 2009 8:18 PM

Saratoga is rooting for you NICANOR!  Good Luck!

G. Day 29 Jan 2009 8:19 PM

MJ - Really, handle and is down and purses are being cut? I hadn't noticed the dozens of stories on this site, the local Louisville media or other trade publications. Is water wet? Is the sky blue? While you are thinking these things through, show me where I say that this publicity is bad (hint - you won't find it). My issue is with the premature coronation of Nicanor's greatness and the insuation that this horse will not "be pushed", that, if he wins he is a great racehorse, but if he loses, he is but a pet out for a jaunt around the oval.

As for Nicanor solving any of racing's problems, let me know if Barbaro's little brother will solve the issues of non-uniform medication rules and ineffective testing regulations, wagering transparency, racetrack-horseman percentage squabbles that alienate current and potential racing customers, outdated business models, the horrible living conditions of backside employees (and their lack of health care, education, and an archaic payscale)and I can keep going.

There are stories to be told in every race, even a $7,500 claimer is someone's Kentucky Derby. Nicanor is a good story that has drawn interest from fans of his brother, the best thing that could have happened to the eigth at Gulfstream on Saturday. But the bigtime should be the races that bookend it, the Holy Bull and the Donn. Racing's popularity is not in decline because of the lack of a story like Nicanor's, but because his story is about the fifth most important thing happening in the industry this weekend, and nobody cares about the first four.

Stardust, get yourself straight. Either Barbaro's little brothers are what is keeping racing going (like you said earlier) and will bring rapturous joy back to the sport, or he is no big deal.

Oh, and MJ and Stardust, if you really want to help this sport, then go to a track or your nearest OTB and wager. Bet on Nicanor or against him, but just go bet (you will be fueling the lifeblood of the sport).

ace hare 29 Jan 2009 9:25 PM

acehare: you say,"Either Barbaro's little brothers are what is keeping racing going and will bring rapturous joy back to the sport, or he is no big deal."

Well:

I disagree; he is a good young 3 yr. old with great potential, very good works, and just happens to be Barbaro's brother. He is only ONE of the good things happening this season.

Then you say...

"if you really want to help this sport, then go to a track or your nearest OTB and wager. Bet on Nicanor or against him, but just go bet (you will be fueling the lifeblood of the sport)."

Again close, but, the real lifeblood of the sport are the equines that carry it. With out this "lifeblood" you have no bets, no money, no racing. And I believe a good percentage of people here do bet...

Nicanor will be known for his performances once he starts running, not only as Barbaro's brother or because of Barbaro. The bloodlines will tell. And remember acehare, they both get it from Dynaformer among others in his bloodline. There are many other great 2 and 3 yr. olds I'm watching and I'm sure others are to. And most of us followed Barbaro from his training to his death. So whoever said we are "jumping on the bandwagon" obviously does not know anyone here, or follow the sites, blogs, FOB to know any better. Why put down something that brings people together and just plain feels so good? I'll never understand people like that....

Have a great Saturday everyone!!

Norma Jean

normajean81258 29 Jan 2009 10:52 PM

I don't bet and I really only want for the race horses to be safe and sound.  I could care less if they win or lose.  Barbaro started this downward spriral with the public and it got worse with the demise of Eight Belles.  The racing industry isn't getting better.  Is is desending fast.  I love Nicanor becuase he is Barbaro's brother. I love all horses.  The only thing that I care about is the saftey of the animals.  People cannot take their toys with them when they die.

All the best for Nicanor.  We all love you.

stardust 29 Jan 2009 11:22 PM

ace hare.

Nicanor and Lenntanor are going to keep the racing industry going for awhile.  It is going to end anyway.  People are getting tired of thousands of horses being put down. They already have made a lot of changes because of Barbaro.  I hope for the sake of the horses, things get better and they are safe and sound horses. You cannot fight Congress and keep them from making decisions that they are making.  The only way that you will get them on your side is to find a way to stop the fatalities of these race horses.  They will make the final call.  I hope for the sake of the people that are good and honest, racing stays intact.

This first race is part of Nicanor's training/conditioning.  As long as he comes home safe and sound, it will benefit Nicanor for the future.  His next race will be the better test, or even his third.  Like any young colt, he has a lot to learn and discover.  God Bless him and Edgar in their attempt on Saturday.

Marigold 30 Jan 2009 3:33 AM

I can't believe it. Nicanor is gonna run finally. I am so excited.

Because I get to cash big when he doesn't hit the board. He is only 4-1 because he is Barbaro's bro.  The fact that he is making his debut in a 1 mile race which I think is ignorant in itself.  Also, he will prolly go off at about 4-5 so my money is going elsewhere. It is obvious half of you do not know anything about horse racing because some of you think he should be in a stakes race and others think that a MSW is going to change horse racing. If that's the case then I bet the $3,500 maiden claimer at Blue Ribbon Downs on Wednesday is really gonna have the same affect. And that is no affect at all. The only guy on this whole blog who has a clue is Ace Hare. He seems to really no his stuff

Jason B 30 Jan 2009 4:12 AM

Ace hare, I agree with your comments.

I especially agree that every fan of racing should support it by betting on the races.

I want to add that everyone should bet at an establishment where the money goes to the track and not some offshore organization which gives NOTHING back to the racing industry.

I repeat, make sure your betting dollars goes back to a racetrack.

Perhaps someone more familiar with this aspect could explain it to the readers.

MJ 30 Jan 2009 9:03 AM

Nicanor certainly has his fans, including me and his distractors. I think one can only look at Gulfstream's gate tomorrow to determine if Nicanor will or will not help the horse industry. If his is good or even really good, I am sure he will help. We will have a better idea tomorrow.

I think at least some of us are at an age, where trying to change one's opinion is going to help at all in the long run. So why even bother.

Dynaformer is as mean as a snake and is likely to outlive all of his contemporaries as only the good die young. So it is very possible that if LVR can handle it, we just might see a couple more siblings. I have a feeling that Dynaformer will be pensioned only when his output is down to a trickle or he becomes infirmed.

In other words, this blog could live on forever. So let's try to get along a little better so Amanda's job is a little easier. I fear I've already been edited once today.

Thanks Amanda for putting up with us.

Just be yourself and have fun.  I love you no matter what you do on that track.  I trust Prado with all my heart and I know that he will be very good with you.  Big brother is also going to be running along side of you as your Angel.

stardust 30 Jan 2009 8:37 PM

Really guys?  All you people who have nothing better to do than read comments on a blog about a topic you don't like, and you're telling us that WE don't have a life?  For goodness sakes people!!!  Have you ever heard the terms "If you have nothing nice to say, don't say it" or "Treat others the way you want to be treated"?  Because if you have, and you still act like this, you must lead a sad life.  All the true fans on this site who follow Barbaro's brothers, like me and everyone else, are here because one horse made such a difference.  Since this is exactly what racing needs right now, if you know ANYTHING (as you all claim to be sheer geniuses) then you would know to not discourage people from taking an interest.  Did it ever occur to you that, while betting may help in the short term, in the long term it is better to have younger fans like me supporting the sport, even if they can't bet now?  And if the only good that you can find out of this situation is being able to bet against the biggest news this sport has seen in a while, then you are ignorant and selfish.  Not that I didn't know such people existed, but I never knew they could be so evil.  So instead of posting negative comments, why don't you all go find something better to do?  If you have a better way to get people to become fans of this sport, we'd love to hear it..........................

Well, since I didn't hear any good ideas, I suggest you all just take your own advice and get a life.  Until then, stay away from intelligent people.

Chase 30 Jan 2009 8:46 PM

One interesting fact about Secretariat was that he finished 4th in his first start as a 2 year old to Herbull, a Calumet colt who never amounted to anything. Point here is that Nicanor may not finish first, but pay attention to how he finishes. Secretariat finished "full of run." He also won his next start.

In my mind, Nicanor is getting coverage, not just because he is Barbaro's brother, but because he may be an excellent race horse in his own right. I would like to think we already know who the Derby winner is, and the rest of the three year old division pales next to 17 hand Nicanor. We'll see tomorrow if he's the real deal. I think he is.

jon 30 Jan 2009 9:30 PM

Grey K 31 Jan 2009 4:54 PM

Word from Egdar Prado and HRTV is the Nicanor grabbed a quarter and Prado wrapped up on him ...

This basically means he clipped a front leg by striking it with a hind ... It is not serious ..

Often green or young horses extending themselves in a race do this ...

Nicanor is a large rangy individual who is new to using himself, and this is not a surprise or a big deal ...

It would explain him appearing to drop back .

stardust 31 Jan 2009 5:08 PM

well he had a horrible start but theres definitely some run in him, maybe he'll try turf?

kkay3702 31 Jan 2009 5:11 PM

Barbaro started on the turf.  I know that Nicanor has what it takes but can you imagine how much pressure is on him?  If something were to happen to him, racing would be in serious trouble.  The nation if not the world has their eyes on that horse and that has to play a factor with Edgar.  I am sure he is being very careful with him, as he should.  Nicanor is still number one in my eyes right now.  I don't care about the finish line.  I care that he is going back to the barn.

Anyone that has a problem with this horse needs to get a life.  This horse has gained MORE attention than any other horse since the demise of Barbaro.  THAT is what is really needed.  He is loved and loved by many.  It is the people that are jealous that their horses don't get this type of recognition that are saying the bad things about this wonderful horse and jockey.

Nicanor has won the hearts of the nation.  That is a lot more than money can buy.

stardust 31 Jan 2009 6:16 PM

Here is the love for Nicanor.

stardust 31 Jan 2009 6:20 PM

"But mostly, the talk around Gulfstream's rail Saturday was all Nicanor, all the time.

When Gretchen Jackson walked past the finish line area at 3:15 p.m. (EST) — more than an hour before Nicanor went to the post —  two men scrambled to capture the moment on cell phone cameras, one of them shouting "Good luck!" as she made her way by. Trainer Michael Matz heard many of the same cries as he climbed the stairs to his seat before the race.

And as Nicanor came into the view of fans for the first time at 4:25, many in the estimated crowd of 3,000 packed five-deep around the saddling ring broke into applause, with a few more clapping when Prado climbed aboard for the short trek over to the track. The 4-1 second choice in the morning line was actually bet down to 3-5 at one point, before going off at 2-1."

THAT my friends is THAT!  Nicanor is very loved.  This is a quote from Bloodhorse.

stardust 31 Jan 2009 6:25 PM

He ran exactly to his ability, which is none. I am a better not an animal lover. We are the ones who keep the sport going. Without our wagering dollars horse racing would not exist. Like it or not that's the way it is. Horses die every day but there'e always the next race to bet. If you don't like it then watch golf or some other stupid sport that doesn't depend on paramutual wagering to keep it afloat. Today proved none of you know anything about handicapping. Stupid freaks! I'm the man and always will be.

Tim 31 Jan 2009 6:31 PM

OMG.  This is too freaky. We can't lose this horse.   Injured?  I am shocked.  No wonder Edgar slowed down that horse. THANK GOD for Prado.  Wonderful jockey on him.

stardust 31 Jan 2009 8:36 PM

Tim it is people like you that Congress is looking at.  THEY are not going to let this sport keep going if horses keep on breaking down. EDGAR eased him up!  Get off this blog if you don't like Nicanor.  You should be glad that he is running cause if the legacy of Barbaro wasn't there, horseracing would be banned.  This horse is the bright light that the Nation racing fans AND non racing fans need to still have respect fot it.

"He (Nicanor) is better than that, said his jockey, Edgar Prado. Ive worked him in the mornings, and he showed me a lot. He broke really fast and unfortunately grabbed his left quarter. Well just have to see how long it takes to heal, but I know hes better than that".

After suffering the injury, Nicanor wasnt comfortable, so Edgar just wrapped up on him, said the colts trainer, Michael Matz.

stardust 01 Feb 2009 11:58 AM

Tim why are you on this blog?  This is a blog for the FOB's and the people that love Barbaro, Nicanor and Lenntanor.  Please go away.   I am really surprsed your post even got put up.  Actually it should be removed.  We don't need negative vibes for a wonderful family here.  WE GET IT!  We love Nicanor no matter what he does.  You know what?  He went back to the barn yesterday.  ON FOUR LEGS!  IF the Nation loses this horse, YOU will need to find another sport to bet on cause this one will go down.  There are a lot of eyes that make a difference on this horse.  Most of them are in DC!

stardust 01 Feb 2009 12:04 PM

Stardust you should know what you're talking about before you speak. It's all you idiots publicizing this horse that made so many people watch the race just to see another thoroughbred get injured during a race. That is exactly what racing doesn't need. Leave racing to the wagering public and all you PETA freaks will go away. Animals are called animals for a reason. They are not human and shouldn't idolized like Allah or Muhammed.

Tim 01 Feb 2009 3:44 PM

Tim, spare us the macho man act.  Go away.  We are not bettors, we are horse lovers and supporters.  Without the horses, there would be no racing, and no betting.  You are the man??  Hardly...

Marigold 01 Feb 2009 5:34 PM

Marigold

Good point.  Why in the world would someone that doesn't like Nicanor be on Nicanors blog?  Oh I get it.  Maybe cause he has no life?  Without the horse there is no horseracing.  Imagine that.  A 5 year old would understand that one.  :)  Tim go away.  We GET IT that you don't like Nicanor. Why are you even here?

stardust 02 Feb 2009 2:35 PM

I'm on here because Star needs professional help with her fantasies about her little government banning everything she doesn't agree with. People like her use the term slaughter to demonize animals being made into food. Horses are not being slaughtered. They are processed for human consumption just like cattle and pigs. It's not a pretty sight with the bolt gun and everything but that's how food is made. Fair is fair. If you ban horse meat you have to ban all meat which is we all know won't happen. I get 90% of my daily protein intake from animal products. If I didn't then I wouldn't have a 365 bench press. Learn to keep it real.

Tim 02 Feb 2009 9:23 PM

There is an expression that certainly applies to some of the posters here:

"I refuse to engage in a battle of wits with an unarmed person."

Just scroll on by.  This negative stuff doesn't even have to be looked at.  Really it is pretty easy to not even read it.  I do it all the time.  When I see those names, I don't even bother to read the post.  I know that they are not good ones.  Waist of time.

We love Nicanor and that is really all that matters.  :)  A true FOB here.  :)

stardust 03 Feb 2009 1:45 PM

Well, I certainly hope no one on this blog is eating horsemeat. I hear it has a really awful smell while it is cooking. And I am certain that if zoo animals had a choice of say deer, cow or horsemeat, they'd poopoo the horsemeat.

Look, no one says everyone has to go veggie, I certainly am not. But I'd say if an animal works for a living and at least tries to make his owner rich, he should be exempt from the slaughterhouse, and that would be any animal.

Kathy 03 Feb 2009 1:47 PM

Kathy.  You are so right.  Horses should NOT even be considered for a dinner table.  People that think they should?  Well IMO they need to be put in a straght jacket.  That is really nuts.  I want nothing to do with a person that would even consider eating horse meat.  I would die before I would touch it.  Not a chance.

Don't worry about the horses getting sent overseas.  I spent time in DC last month and they are in full swing to make sure that does not happen.  Just because it isn't final in law yet doesn't mean a darn thing.  I know what I heard.  I have ears.  :)

stardust 03 Feb 2009 1:55 PM

As for the zoo animals, I have fed tigers in zoos.  They do not eat horse meat.  :)

stardust 03 Feb 2009 1:56 PM

I took a back tour of the San Diego zoo back in the mid 90's and at that time they did. Maybe the zoos have been enlightened.

Kathy 03 Feb 2009 2:02 PM

Tim you don't know who I am or who I know.  You are digging a hole that is pretty deep.  I would throw away that shovel.  It will wind up in a place where you won't like it.

stardust 03 Feb 2009 2:02 PM

Kathy.  I don't know about there but I do know that the zoos I have been to don't feed the tigers horsemeat.  Now I am talking about recent years.  I don't have a clue what they were doing in the early 90's.

stardust 03 Feb 2009 2:23 PM

Hey I have an idea.  Maybe the people that are putting down Nicanor and eating horsemeat on this blog should be fed to the tigers.  I know there are some that haven't been fed yet today. :) On the other hand, they would probably spit it out.  Tigers don't want to be contaminated either.

stardust 03 Feb 2009 2:27 PM

I don't know if it is you or me Stardust, but I believe Amanda's blog load has been exponentially reduced because of this horsemeat dialogue. I know, let's blame Tim!!

It is possible zoo's simply went to other food sources for the big cats because supply of horse meat in the U.S. has substantially gone down in recent years. I am not sure how many horse slaughter houses even exist here anymore. I have a feeling that most exist overseas.

Kathy 03 Feb 2009 2:48 PM

Kathy.  I think I know what you mean.  Sometimes one person can really mess things up for the people that are trying to make a difference.  I am surprised that she let that comment in.  Those types of comments are very rude and un ethical.  I hope that we can get on track here and talk about the important things like Nicanor, and the horses.  They are what is really important.

You are probably right about the supply of horse meat.  I have no clue.  I wasn't involved with the zoo 10 years ago.  Just recently was when I started getting involved with the zoo, wildlife and exotic animals.  I have a hard time keeping up with helping the wildlife too.  I keep on donating for the wolves and polar bears and sometimes we make a difference and sometimes we don't.  We did manage to get the wolves a stay of execution in yellowstone park.  We almost lost 100 of them.  I just love animals of all kinds and horses to me are so very special.  My beief is they should not be treated as a machine to make money and only money.  They need love.  They should have just as much love as someones pet dog or cat.  :)

stardust 03 Feb 2009 4:04 PM

stardust- If you are referring to Tim's comment about being okay with horse slaughter, that is his opinion and I don't edit people's opinions.

aduckworth 03 Feb 2009 4:15 PM

Kathy.  There are no more slaughter houses for the horses in the states.  Now the big thing on the table is to stop people from shipping the horses out of the US to other countries for slaughter.  That is going to pass too.  :)  Horses here will be safe.  We will need to work on finding them homes though.  That is a hot topic.

I eat chicken, fish, a little bit of beef (not a lot) and food that is "meant" for us to eat.  I am not a veggie.  I would never consider eating a horse.  That would be like eating my dog.  I could't even imagine that.  I have a hard time with ducks and rabbits.  Usually I eat seafood.

stardust 03 Feb 2009 4:20 PM

Stardust i will tell you once and only once. Watch what you say.

Tim 03 Feb 2009 9:53 PM

Oh an BTW Stardust tou just made my point for me. You and I both Eat beef, chicken, and dairy but you want to ban people from other cultures from eating horse meat. I'm sure a lot of people around the world think we're gross for eating beef and poultry but there not calling for a ban on slaughter.

Tim 03 Feb 2009 10:21 PM

Tim I have spent more time abroad in many countries than I have here.  I know all about Hong Kong and the main meal being dog.  I know all about this and that.  I am not one bit ignorant.  I lived overseas and still didn't eat horses or dogs.  I am a horse lover.  I feel for the dogs and the horses in other countries but what can I do about that?  Nothing.  I can make a difference here in the states.  I will say whatever I feel like saying and if Amanda doesn't want it up, she won't let it go up.  :)  Go enjoy your lunch.

stardust 04 Feb 2009 12:06 PM

Oh Tim by the way.  A beef steak in Japan cost over a hundred US dollars.  Did you know that?  It is very very expensive.  People love it.  They cannot afford it. And that is a small steak. The big thing is Asia is poultry.  Chickens everywhere.  You have to duck not to run into the hanging chickens all over the shopping food markets.  :)

stardust 04 Feb 2009 12:09 PM

I'll put this over here too :)

The 111th Congress got off to a galloping start for America's horses with the introduction of legislation to end the slaughter of American horses for human consumption in the U.S. and abroad.

The Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act of 2009 (H.R. 503) was introduced by House Judiciary Committee Chairman Representative John Conyers (D-MI) and Representative Dan Burton (R-IN) just days into the new Congress, demonstrating their strong commitment to move this legislation through the process as quickly as possible and spare horses from bring transported to foreign slaughterhouses."

stardust 04 Feb 2009 12:17 PM

I saw a letter earlier in this blog that is no longer here. My first thought was OMG when I saw it. I am ever so glad you removed it. Whereas I thought it extremely insensitive, others would have been more vocal about than I.

There has been a wide and diverse variety of activists ever since I can remember...okay, that would be the mid sixties and frankly I am not sure why I still hear people bully-ache about them. It is okay to have an opionion. Activists are simply people who have an opinion that take that opinion further than most of us. And as long as the person who has the idea that is carried further than most doesn't hurt anyone, I frankly do not have a problem with it. I remember back in the sixties when I was seven or so a teacher saying there were like 48 whooping cranes left in the world and that was it. And you know what, if someone hadn't done something about the problem back in the sixties, there would be no whooping cranes today.

I frankly do not believe that horses should be sent to the slaughterhouse simply because an owner doesn't need their services any longer. There should be an alternative. Thank you Stardust for enlightening us.

Kathy 04 Feb 2009 3:11 PM

Kathy You're welcome.  I missed the comment and it is probably a good thing :)

We just need to focus on the horses and giving them the best of care.  After all they used to be the source for transportation, and they carried everyone around when there weren't any cars.  They are very special animals and they need to be treated as such.  They do things for people.  A lot of which is off the race track.  Horses have a lot of puposes in life.  That is whey they were put here.  Such wonderful things.  Ya have to love them.  How can one not?  :)

stardust 04 Feb 2009 3:55 PM

Christy.  That post will be removed too (the one I wrote). I am not with PETA.  I am a FOB.  I believe that Eight Belles "did" have a very good trainer. I have no clue why she was entered in the Derby.  What I do know is that her breakdown really upset me.

I don't know where you guys are getting this PETA thing with me.  I think it is kind of funny.  I have nothing to do with them.  :)

stardust 10 Feb 2009 2:25 PM

Oh and as far as attacking the owner, trainer and jockey, THAT is way out of line.  I never knew that happened.  That kind of stuff is stupid.  People that do that should be charged with assult.

stardust 10 Feb 2009 2:26 PM

Kathy.  I am glad you found the whole 503 thing and posted it.  I didn't want to have to do that. :)

stardust 10 Feb 2009 3:24 PM

Kathy.  Let's talk about how cool it would be for a filly next time.  Remember what I said about the Breeders Cup?  Wouldn't that be cool if ALL the horses in the BC were Barbaro's brothers and sisters.  Love that idea.  Boy Edgar and Matz sure would be busy wouldn't they.  :)
