Checking In on Lentenor and La Ville Rouge

Editor’s note: Below are some updates on Lentenor and La Ville Rouge. I hope they clarify any confusion or concern. Keep in mind that those caring for members of Barbaro’s family are kindly taking time out of their busy schedules to provide information to the public. We should all be appreciative of their willingness to let us have a glimpse inside their world and respect the pace at which they choose to share information.

From Jill Stephens of Stephens Thoroughbreds:

Lentenor is training nicely.  He has started some faster paced gallops now, 18 second eighths.  He is just about ready for an actual breeze.  He stands in the gates patiently and then jogs away.

His routine is pretty much the same.  He still gets to go outside, but not as long as he used to, and he doesn't go out with a buddy anymore.  He is very independent and doesn't seem to mind having a paddock to himself.  He also has a groom everyday at this point that provides daily brushing and leg care.

Not one particular thing has changed about Lentenor.  He is going through sort of a steady, across the board maturation process.  His mass has increased noticeably to me, it makes him look big.

He is 15 and 3.5 hands.  I was a little surprised because he appears even taller than this.  His neck goes steadily upward from the withers, and with his mass he has a big presence.  He is a very comfortable horse to ride as his body feels so solid and comfortable.

I do not know when he will leave.  He is a pleasure to train and care for, and he is going to take time given the family growth pattern---so no hurry.

I would like to add that he continues to be a very kind horse.  A lot of the colts change a bit when they get to this age and stage of conditioning.  Even when he feels great, he has a kind eye and a gentle demeanor.

From Headley Bell of Mill Ridge Farm:

La Ville Rouge foaled a big colt nearly three weeks ago without event except he had a few cracked ribs, which is not unusual considering his size.

As a result, we kept him in a stall and subsequently he developed a fever which turned out to be an infected umbilicus. We are treating him for this infection and are hopeful he will heal soon.

La Ville Rouge is doing well and caring for her foal. Once he heals, we look forward to sharing photos with the public.

108 Comments:

Glad to hear that everything is okay with Babynor. Hope his little ribs mends soon.

And it is also great to hear about Lentenor. I am not surprised he is so independent. I wonder if the Barbaro boys will eventually meet up and see each other, at least from their own paddocks.

Thanks Amanda for the great news.

Kathy 31 Mar 2009 2:45 PM

Awe. I hope he get's better soon and can't wait to see what he looks like.

Is he named yet. Last I heard, if the Jackson's are going in order, he's name will be Serino or something like that.

~Nicole

Get well soo, little bud.

~Nicole~ 31 Mar 2009 2:46 PM

Thank you for these updates!  Can relax a little now about Babynor.

Amanda, thank you for this.  You must know how much we crave any information we can get about this beloved family.  Thank you so very much.

Marigold 31 Mar 2009 2:48 PM

So glad to hear that Lentenor is doing so well... sounds like he is quite the young man... and even happier that are not rushing him... he's got awesome owners... there is never a need to push a young horse... IMO

Sorry to hear that the new baby cracked a few ribs, he must really be a big guy... and that he's dealing with an infected belly button... nothing uncommon though and very treatable... and even better that they caught it while he is so young... don't want it to develop into a worse infection or an umbilical hernia... again... good owners provide the best of care....

Thanks to the Jacksons for letting us see their world... the Stephensons for sharing so much information as well as Mill Ridge for their care and honesty... Matz and his staff for truly understanding horses... if they didn't do such a good job with these guys... it would show...

Amanda, thanks for creating this blod and keeping it updated.... it really is appreciated by all of us... and I am grateful to read every morsel you supply... Easter Blessings!!!

Susan NOVA 31 Mar 2009 2:48 PM

Oh my! I feel so concerned for the new foal. What a rough birth process! At least Lentenor is doing great. I love the whole family and appreciate the information as one of many fans. Thanks so much for the update.

CLee 31 Mar 2009 2:54 PM

Lentenor seems to be developing very nicely! I can't wait to see more pictures of him! As for the colt I hope he heals nicely and quickly so we can see some pictures of this cute little guy! Get Well baby!!!

anniedixie65 31 Mar 2009 2:57 PM

Thank you Jill Stephens and Headley Bell for your kindness in sharing the everyday welfare of your charges. We, the fans are very appreciative of the time and effort it takes from your daily routines. Thank you for being so generous and thank you Amanda for being there for us. Best wishes for the speedily recovery of the colt and La Ville Rouge and good luck to Lentenor in his schooling.

Dona 31 Mar 2009 2:57 PM

So sorry that Babynor had such difficulties on his birth. Will be waiting patiently for pictures of him when he is out romping with his new friends.

Lentenor - you rock big boy (Bubba)

Kathie 31 Mar 2009 3:11 PM

Thank you for the info. it is much appreciated.

Rodney 31 Mar 2009 3:15 PM

Thank you everyone for the sharing of information on these horses.

Lentenor seems to becoming a very big boy, gets his kind eye & demeanor from his mom. :)

Hope Babynor is healing well and feeling better soon, glad that he is okay! LVR will take good care of him!

horsenut23 31 Mar 2009 3:18 PM

Thanks Amanda for both updates!

LVR,Your a caring mom, & Baby Sereno, Please get better soon & Glad to see Lentenor progressing along, Looking forward to following these two brothers as they follow in Barbaro & Nicanor's Hoofstep's !, Thanks so much to Everyone involved in their lives for allowing us this unprecented access!

Greg J. 31 Mar 2009 3:21 PM

Thank you for the info. it is very very much appreciated.

Debbie1948 31 Mar 2009 3:28 PM

I'm glad Lentenor is doing well. I pray for the best for this beloved family. Sorry to hear Babynor is having a rough time. I know broken ribs hurt and an infection too? Should I be worried? I don't know much about horse health and injuries. Today, I took time to watch some Barbaro videos on YouTube. God, what a beautiful boy. It breaks my heart all over again that we lost him the way we did. I also want to thank all the people that take time to provide information on this blog. It is so appreciated by so many that loved and still love Barbaro and his family. Thank you so much.

Ida Lee 31 Mar 2009 3:34 PM

I'M SO GLAD THE NEW COLT IS DOING WELL - I KNOW ITS A BUSINESS AND THE JACKSON ARE GREAT PEOPLE - BUT DO THESE MARES EVER GET A REST - I THINK THEY DESERVE IT - I KNOW THE OLDER THEY GET THE RISKIER AND MORE DANGEROUS IT BECOMES FOR THE MARE DURING AFTER THEY FOAL.

SJC 31 Mar 2009 3:41 PM

Ida Lee - Both things are more common than you would think. I definitely would not stress about it.

Here is an article from The Horse, if you would like to read about a study involving rib fractures: www.thehorse.com/ViewArticle.aspx

aduckworth 31 Mar 2009 3:41 PM

SJC - As has been mentioned before, La Ville Rouge did not have a foal in 2005 or 2008.

aduckworth 31 Mar 2009 3:51 PM

Thank you, Amanda, for the updates. A lot of us will be resting easier now. And please thank Jill Stephens and Headley Bell for their graciousness. We have to remember that this is these people's livelihood. Breeding farms must be incredibly busy at this time of year, between foalings and breedings. I am deeply appreciative of their willingness to communicate with the Jackson boys's fans!

Kbuckeye 31 Mar 2009 4:19 PM

Thanks to everyone involved in keeping us updated on the family's progress.

Karen in Texas 31 Mar 2009 4:21 PM

My sincere thanks to all for the very much appreciated updates.

Lentenor sounds like he is becoming more independent each day.

My love and best wishes to the little one and to LVR.  The shared link was most helpful.

Thank you again.

GinnieJ 31 Mar 2009 4:21 PM

So excited to hear news on Lentenor. He sounds amazing... given his Daddy's notoriously bad temper its great to hear the boys seem to have been blessed with their momma's lovley personality. Best of luck to Lentenor, Nicanor LVR & baby boy in all their endevors.

Lady Ruffian 31 Mar 2009 4:29 PM

Amanda:

Thank you for all information on that Mom and foal, and it is expecially nice to hear about Lentenor am glad he is growing and a nice horse.  Nicanor is 16 hands so guess Lentenor has a way to go.

Ragsy 31 Mar 2009 4:30 PM

Thank you is simply the only way I know to express my gratitude for all the information you provide to us regarding Barbaro's family.  It is wonderful that his connections are so generous and understanding of how much we care because we loved Barbaro so dearly.  I am grateful also to Bloodhorse for providing this online blog to allow us all to post our joy at hearing of the Jackson boys.  Thank you, Amanda!

txbarbfan 31 Mar 2009 4:43 PM

Sounds like a normal thing for a big foal. It happens!! He will be just fine.

LyndaP31 31 Mar 2009 4:57 PM

Ragsy, I don't know how tall Nicanor is, I've heard he's not quite 16 hands.  If Lentenor is 15 and 3.5 hands as mentioned above, then he is 15 hands 3-1/2 inches tall- almost 16 hands.  A hand is 4 inches.  As mentioned, if they are big body-wise, the horse can seem a lot taller.

Lentenor...hmm....independent. I hope means he won't mind leaving the other horses in the dust.  His demeanor, well, we'll just have to wait to see if he transfers that to being calm on the track and not leaving his races in the paddock.

Thanks everyone for sharing.

HorseFirst 31 Mar 2009 5:04 PM

Amanda, thank you for your tireless efforts, I don't know how you do it!

Just wanted to say that I hope no one here gets worked up over the report of the broken ribs. TOTALLY normal in a foal that size.

We had a filly born on our ranch two years ago who was 10 days late and a whopping 130+ pounds, and we were SHOCKED when she came out of it "unscathed", so for those who are possibly upset over this news, please understand that it's actually a fairly common occurence, he will be JUST FINE, with no long term ill effects.

LVR gave birth to a whopping 142 pound baby, our sympathies should be with HER ;)

LavasLegend 31 Mar 2009 5:16 PM

Amanda-Barbaro was LVR's foal of 2003, Nicanor foaled in 2006 and Lentanor in 2007. You say LVR had no foals in 2005 or 2008. Was there a foal in 2004? I don't believe I've heard anything about that one. What about prior to Barbaro? Thanks for all the information you post!!

Barthart 31 Mar 2009 5:25 PM

I'm glad Lentenor is doing good and I hope Babynor is getting stronger and better everyday. Best wishes toward the Barbaro Brother's! :D

Horses for life 31 Mar 2009 5:25 PM

Barthart - In 2002, she had a colt by Saint Ballado named Holy Ground. He became a stakes winner. In 2004, she had a colt by Quiet American named Man in Havana. He showed little interest in racing, so the Jacksons had him gelded and he is now a jumper.

aduckworth 31 Mar 2009 5:28 PM

Thank you for the updates.  I really appreciate the time you all take to keep us informed on this horse family.  Thank you for all that each person connected w/ this family does.

Cassidy 31 Mar 2009 5:39 PM

I am thankful for people like the Jacksons who show patience and love for their horses. These people don't seem to get as much press as those who are not so kind and honest. Thanks for giving us a glimpse into their lives and the lives of their precious horses.

Nancy 31 Mar 2009 5:40 PM

TO SJC AND BARTHART (cc to Amanda): Here is La Ville Rouge's foaling record...

HOLY GROUND, colt, 2002

BARBARO, colt, 2003

MAN IN HAVANA, gelding, 2004

NICANOR, colt, 2006

LENTENOR, colt, 2007

"BABY," colt, 2009

She is not a heavily bred mare. It's not uncommon for mares to have over 10 foals, nor is it anything new. As an example, one of the most important Thoroughbred foundation mares ever, La Troienne, had 14 foals between 1932 and 1948.

Mares in wild horse populations usually have a foal every year. It's the way God made horses.

For Big Red 31 Mar 2009 5:53 PM

You can look at Holy Ground's pedigree and if you click on the picture icon, see him here:

www.pedigreequery.com/holy+ground3

Ditto for Man in Havana here:

www.pedigreequery.com/man+in+havana

These are considered half-brothers to Barbaro.  Only through the same dam does the term half-brother apply.

Here is La Ville Rouge:

www.pedigreequery.com/la+ville+rouge

If you click on Reports in the upper left, then Progeny, you can see the foals La Ville Rouge has had.  Not all functions will work without a subscription, however, and Pedigree Query is GENERALLY pretty accurate, but not always.

HorseFirst 31 Mar 2009 6:14 PM

Many thanks to all those involved to take the time out of their busy days to keep us abreast on our LVR/Dynafomer gang.  This blog is the best and I expect it has gotten more than a few people interested in racing by being able to follow this one family.  Please keep up the good work that the Blood Horse is doing in bringing new people into the foal of horseracing.  Again many thanks.

lobieb 31 Mar 2009 6:25 PM

Cracked ribs, may be common in foals that big, but ouchie, thats still gotta be causing the little guy some discomfort. I've read it is very commmon in large foals and they are usually fine with no long term effects. I read a while back that Hard Spuns first foal was 130 pound, and i thought that was big.

Im pretty sure this foal is Marcano, not Serano, which a couple people mentioned. Serano is next in line then Calypso.

Good to hear Lentenor has a serious demeanor, maybe he will be more focused and mature sooner then Nicanor. Maybe if Nicanor performs well on the Polytrack at Keeneland, they will try him on the grass. I hear horses that do well on turf also do well on Polytrack. It worked very well in The Breeders Cup races. Does that also hold true for the reverse ? from Polytrack to turf?

mdfanofracing 31 Mar 2009 6:38 PM

Great news that Lentenor is coming along nicely. Glad to hear he still has a kind eye. I wish him and Nicanor all the best of luck. Thanks so very much for taking the time to keep all of us fans informed. Hope to see pics of L.V.'S new baby in the near future. Also some new pics of Lenny if possible.

DONNA 31 Mar 2009 7:03 PM

Thank everyone so much for all of the info.

Lentenor sounds great.  Just think in a short time both he and Nicanor will be at Fair Hill.

MJ 31 Mar 2009 7:38 PM

I know I don't comment a lot on this, but I just wanted to say how thankful I, and I'm sure everyone else, is that you take the time to update this blog for us.  And thank you to all of the people who update you on each horse's individual progress.  It is so appreciated, and I can't wait to see how they progress in the future.  I have a feeling that Nicanor is going to be an unbelievable 4 year old, but I dunno.  Thanks again!

Chase 31 Mar 2009 7:43 PM

wow, Lentenor sounds more and more like Barbaro everyday. I mean in looks though, ha, i cant bring myself to compare the four brothers to eachother in any other aspect. and poor Babynor! i know its common, but it's like a baby with a cold, you cant help but fuss over it. La Ville Rouge is such an amazing gal.

Do we know anything else about Man in Havana? I'd love to know who he's training with. I wonder how far along he is in terms of jumping, what a sight that would be!

tati 31 Mar 2009 7:46 PM

This is Man in Havana while he was still in training:

finalturngallery.com/.../maninhavana.jpg.html

I heard once that he was a very sweet horse, probably too sweet to have that competitive fire that makes a good race horse.  He's still young for a jumper, so it may be a few years before anyone finds out if he's good at that.

s lee 31 Mar 2009 7:48 PM

Glad to hear Babynor is getting better and soon we will see a picture of him.

Sounds like Lentenor is a sweetheart. Can't wait to see more pictures of him as well...

Kath from SC 31 Mar 2009 8:01 PM

That article was fascinating Amanda, thank you.  I had no idea rib fractures were so common.  Sounds like this baby was pretty huge so I wonder if it's any indication (given the siblings thus far) that we might have a late bloomer that starts out big and gangly.  How big was Barbaro as a baby?

Kate 31 Mar 2009 8:14 PM

Thanks for the update Amanda. So glad to hear the good news about LVR and baby. Prayin' for his little ribs to heal soon. I was surprised to hear that Lentenor is only 15 3.5 hands, in all the pictures and the video you have so graciously provided he looks much bigger. Thanks again for the great blog =]

StreetCry+Vertigineux=ZENYATTA!!!!! 31 Mar 2009 8:17 PM

Amanda, thank you for you posts.  Its always nice hearing about the boys.  Thanks also to Jill Stephens and Headly Bell for sharing with all of us the news with Lentenor and the new baby.  Its like being able to read about the first family in racing.  I'm glad this family of Barbaro's mother and brothers is owned and trained by the Jacksons and Matz.  They are doing a wonderful job.  So again thanks Amanda for each and every update and picture you publish for us.

Janet 31 Mar 2009 10:38 PM

Thanks to everyone for giving us an update on Lentenor and the new colt.  So glad to hear Lentenor is progressing well. Wishing the new colt a speedy recovery. I have a question if someone could please answer. If 142 lbs is huge, what is the average weight of a newby?  Thanks in advance for your answer.

Penny in Texas 31 Mar 2009 11:33 PM

Thank you so much for this information. My family is in love with the whole Barbaro family. Glad to hear that his baby brothers are doing well. Nicanor, Lentenor and the new La Ville Rouge/Dynaformer baby are thoroughbred royalty!

Cyndie 31 Mar 2009 11:40 PM

happy to hear that lentenor is doing well I am looking forward to next years derby also get well soon little baby we love you and your mom.  Darlene.

darlene 01 Apr 2009 12:34 AM

So happy to have an update on both baby and Lentenor! Glad to hear baby will be fine!  He was a "whopper"!  Go Lenny!  If you race or not, we still love you!  All we want is for you to be safe and sound.

nannie284 01 Apr 2009 4:48 AM

So glad to hear La Ville Rouge is doing well, Angels are watching over you and little Babynor Jackson. I love you like guys like you are my own. Get well, darlings,we will all wait to see you soon.Lentenor, you sound like you are developing into quite a Prince!

sandieh 01 Apr 2009 6:54 AM

in answer to penny

average weight for a new foal is 75 to 100 pounds at birth

have seen some of the 130 to 140 sized oned and they almost look close to weanlings they are so big

heidi 01 Apr 2009 9:04 AM

Are the Jackson's still sending LVR to Dyndaformer?  When it was reported that the foal was 140+ pounds, my immediate reaction was to find another stallion.  Weren't her last foals by Dyndaformer rather large?

JAJ 01 Apr 2009 9:26 AM

Thank you for taking time to update us! Can't wait to see the new baby!

SQ 01 Apr 2009 9:28 AM

Thanks for the update- hope the foal will be doing well soon. Has La Ville been bred back to Dynaformer yet?

Squeaky 01 Apr 2009 9:45 AM

Thank you for all the info on this blessed family of horses. It is appreciated more than you ever will know.Hope baby feels better soon! All I can say about Lentenor is he is the reason Big Brown was not a triple crown winner,it belongs to him.

Tracy 01 Apr 2009 9:54 AM

Amanda, thank you for the info on the broken rib. Made me feel better about Babynor. Someone mentioned that the Baby will be named Serano. That's not the next foxhound in the picture, is it? I'm confused. Anyway, Serano is my maiden name (but spelled Serrano)so I'll be proud to share my name with Pretty Boy Babynor.

Ida Lee 01 Apr 2009 10:48 AM

Man in Havana is in training with a talented amateur-owner from Chester County, not far from the Jacksons. I believe she hunts and used to steeplechase. She is probably part of their social circle and quite the horsewoman. I don't know how long it will be before (or if) he will do the amateur owners with her. Those jumps are 3'9" - 4'6". He will probably start in the adult amateurs at 3' - 3'6". If he gets really good he may well qualify for Devon as this owner (since she is an amateur I don't know if it's my business spreading her name) competes there nearly every year. You have to qualify and jumps are pushed to the limits for height for the division (4'6" height, ~ 5'6" wide). If he ever does go to the Devon Horse Show (an amazing event) it would be great if we went to support him!

Lorenzo 01 Apr 2009 10:52 AM

Yep, I suspected something was not quite right...glad it's only minor.  JAJ, congrats on getting through on this blog with your concern about La Ville Rouge;  I haven't been able to.  The older the broodmare coupled with the larger the foal, the greater the danger (but she is only 13).  But anyway, does anyone remember the story of the 1971 Kentucky Derby winner Canonero II?  He was born with a noticeably crooked right foreleg, and it is believed that this deformity resulted from his mother Dixieland, who was small in size, carrying her large foal ackwardly.

helsbelles 01 Apr 2009 10:58 AM

Thanks for the updates of Lentenor and little brother.

We all appreciate the time you take to keep us so well informed.

RhondaH 01 Apr 2009 11:07 AM

The Jackson's picture(In there Home)...

The “Duke of Westminster’s hunting dogs” painting has the dog names "Barbaro" in a separate portrait all the way to the right, It has a the same for "Calypso" all the way to the left, Then the center of the painting has the four foxhounds grouped together, From left to right(In order):

Marcano, Séréno, Lentenor, Nicanor

So, If the Jackson's continue this pattern, "Séréno" should be the name of LVR's baby foal, Hope that helps....(Here is a link showing the portrait, and its history):

www.barbaroandnicanor.blogspot.com

Greg J. 01 Apr 2009 11:31 AM

Oh man cracked ribs?  :-(  I just saw this blog.  From what I am reading in scanning the posts, he will be OK?  AMANDA?????????

Poor little thing.  Cracked ribs hurt.  I have had them be4.  OUCH.  :-(  I pray for his fast recovery.

stardust 01 Apr 2009 12:27 PM

Wasn't Lentenor 148 lbs at his foaling?  What about Nicanor?  I don't think I've heard anything about his weight when he was born.  Amanda, do you know the answer to this?  And, how about Barbaro?

Marigold 01 Apr 2009 12:35 PM

From an explanation of the Thurber dog's painting where Barbaro and his brothers get their names "A large, central image depicts two English foxhounds and two vendeens: Margano, Sereno, Lentenor and Nicanor. Separate, individual portraits show the English foxhound Barbaro and Calypso, a French foxhound.  Looks like the new baby will be named Sereno

Barb 01 Apr 2009 3:23 PM

Thank you all for the updates. Poor little (?!) guy. Get better soon.

Lenny sounds like he's coming right along. It is so cool to watch these guys grow up! Thanks, Amanda, for your support, and thanks to the connections for their patience with us!

sheila 01 Apr 2009 3:48 PM

THANK YOU ALL. ESPECIALLY MR AND MRS JACKSON FOR SHARING YOUR FAMILY WITH US. HOPE TO HAVE THE PLEASURE OF MEETING YOU AT BARBAROS UNVEILING!!

geralyn hoffman 01 Apr 2009 4:48 PM

Greg J - thank you for the info on the dogs; the link was great.

helsbelles - I was a member of the hispanic community in 1971 in NYC so do I remember Canonero II? Boy do I. What a ride he took us on!!! I remember at first some people were making fun of him because he ran "funny", plus he wasn't an American horse - he was from Venezuela; he wasn't drop-dead gorgeous like Secretariat or Curlin; but before he was through, he had the whole country on it's feet - crooked leg and all. Thanks for the memories ...

Ida Lee 01 Apr 2009 4:54 PM

Very good report on LENTINOR.  It sounds as though he may have inherited his big brother's, and mother's good sense. At this stage, the world is an exciting place for a horse, and yet, he seems to be responding to the disciplines he will need to become a racehorse.  Also praying for the little guy, and for LaVille.

Otherlyn 01 Apr 2009 7:09 PM

Thank you Heidi for your answer about average weight.  Then that would compare to a human having a 14lb baby. Ouch!

Penny in Texas 01 Apr 2009 7:40 PM

It's amazing to be kept so up to date on the early lives of these young racehorses.  I feel so connected and invested in their futures.  Not just because of loving Barbaro but also because of knowing their stories and seeing them grow.  Thank you for allowing them to be part of my life. I wish we could know them all this way.

TerriV 01 Apr 2009 9:31 PM

Just to keep the history straight: LVR's 2005 foal would have been by Deputy Minister but she lost it. I would have loved to see that one - think Curlin, Ginger Punch, Rags for the benefit of a cross to DM. Ouch on the ribs, but double ouch for the birth of a way big baby. Hope LVR's reproductive tract is okay. Now - time for a filly!

diastu 01 Apr 2009 9:39 PM

thanks Amanda and everyone for the updates on this special equine family.

gammyp6 01 Apr 2009 10:02 PM

Reading about Lentenor was like reading about Barbaro all over again, when he was at that same time in his life. Those horses do have to most gentle eyes, like their mother. That is what captivated me about Barbaro and made me fall in love with him, his beautiful soul showed through his eyes.

I still love you Barbaro!

Renee 01 Apr 2009 10:23 PM

Nicanor shipped to Fair Hill last April 30, Wonder if both brothers will ship out together from Florida? Yes Lentenor was 148 lbs, don't think anyone said how much Nicanor was. Can't wait for pictures!

Debbie1948 02 Apr 2009 8:41 AM

This refreshed my memory, A story on Lentenor from last year, I saw part of it posted on ABR's Blog, and thought I would share it with everyone...(Kathryn Levy Feldman (Kit),Author, Her words, Her account):

About Lentenor :

It was shortly after he was born and Gretchen went down to Lexington, Kentucky to visit the foal at Mill Ridge Farm.

She told the story to a group of alumni who were assembled at Chestnut Hill College outside of Philadelphia to hear her and Pat Chapman speak about their relationship with horses. It was a wonderful presentation--one that I told both of them they should consider taking on the road.

In any event, Pat Chapman had asked Gretchen how the foal was. And Gretchen described her visit in which she climbed into the paddock and the foal came right over to her. "I thought that was unusual," she said. "Foals rarely leave their mothers." And then the young Lentenor stood perfectly still and submitted to Gretchen running her hands over his entire body, getting a literal feel for his conformation. "That too was odd," she thought. "Foals never stand still."

Then Gretchen stepped back to give the foal a once over from a distance. He turned a looked at her and then he nickered. "That," she told the audience, "was truly amazing. Foals never talk to anyone except their mothers."

I thought of all these things when I saw the recent photos of Lentenor posted by Mill Ridge. Look closely at the close-up--the "radish-like" marking, the knowing eyes. Do you see an uncanny resemblance to his big brother?

Pat Chapman said it best: "Let me know when he makes his first start. I'd like to place a bet on him." ....

When I hear that story, I seriously get chills down my spine....

Thought everyone would enjoy reading it, Nicanor, Lentenor, and now Sereno(I hope that will be his name)...

These Three Brothers have left us with an incredible connection to Barbaro, and I, for one, Cannot wait for it to Unfold.....

Greg J. 02 Apr 2009 10:33 AM

That is what seperates the Jackson's from other owners.  They are very kind in sharing their horses and their progress with us.  We get to watch them be born, grow, and race or not race.

Thanks Roy and Gretchen and Amanda for making it possible to be a part of those horses lives.  It makes you wonderful and special people.

I can only imagine if other owners would do this.  Wouldn't that rock?  But they don't.  You see the horses at the track on race day and you get their breezing speeds and this and that but to actually be a "part" of the horses life, is very kind and loving.  We are very fortunate to be able to do this with the brothers of Barbaro.  I miss that big guy all the time and his brothers only bring smiles to my face.

I can't speak for anyone else but I can say that because of the sharing of Barbaro and the forming of the Fans of Barbaro, there have been a lot of horses saved.  So many changes for the better.  All because Grethen asked us two years ago to work on the 503.  Wow look how far we have come.  Now it is the saftey of the tracks, the ages of the horses, this and that.  Barbaro with the Jackson's has changed a lot of things for these wonderful horses and I am glad to be a part of it.  Love all of them.

Is Lentenor maturing differently than Nicanor, and if so, is there a chance he will race sooner, and have a chance at the derby or triple crown races?  I suppose it is too early to tell, but pretty exciting to think about.

wendyg 02 Apr 2009 11:41 AM

Thanks Greg J, great article. He seemed like he knew her already, saying "hi". goosebumps for sure! :)

horsenut23 02 Apr 2009 12:22 PM

Greg J.  I have goose bumps all over from reading that.  WOW!  That was really cool.

As a lifelong animal lover, with dogs, cats, birds, I never had a horse.  But as a girl, I dreamed about Native Dancer.  As a young mother, I fell in love with Secretariat and Ruffian (so much so that I named our pedigreed Golden Retriever puppy Sunbolt's Autumn Ruffian, but we called him Curry - a much beloved dog until his death at 9 and 1/2 due to cancer.)  There have been many fur babies and many times that they've had to be put down and I still grieve over every last one of them.  I am currently doing some pre grieving over my terminally ill nearly 15 year old Calico, Carly, also suffering with cancer.  My big boy, a tuxedo with a mask named Z for Zorro, has been diagnosed with Diabetes and I am giving him twice daily injections of insulin.  HE is such a good boy about it, he comes and waits for his shot.  So, it is a sad and difficult time in  my home right now, but Nicanor has provided Joy for me -- Joy and excitement and so much love.  All the love I had for Barbaro has overflowed into Nicanor, and soon, Lentenor, and Baynor will more than receive his share as well!  All because of Bloodhorse and the Jacksons.  My first glimpse of Nicanor came with the Bloodhorse article about his shipping out from Ocala for Fair Hill.  Beautiful photos of an adorable and beautiful young colt, and I fell in love instantly. I check on Nic every single day, and then I check on Lentenor and Babynor.  I need to get some work done around here, but it will have to wait because the Jackson boys keep me going and are getting me through a difficult time.  Thank you Bloodhorse, Amanda, the Jacksons and Team Nicanor!

Marigold 02 Apr 2009 2:21 PM

wendyg, Back in January Jill Stephens said that Lentenor's confidence had improved tremendously and rapidly, and that he acts like an older horse on the track.  She said that he is a very kind horse.  She said that he is progressing as well, if not better, than his brothers in some ways.  So I would say that he is maturing faster than Nicanor, and maybe even faster than Barbaro.  Remember Jill said this back in January.

Mary 02 Apr 2009 2:50 PM

Curious that out of 6 foal by 3 different stallions, LVR has yet to drop a filly.  All colts.

L 02 Apr 2009 2:58 PM

Mary, especially since Dynaformer has evidently sired more fillies than colts.

MVH 02 Apr 2009 3:20 PM

Horsenut & Stardust,

Your quite welcome, My sister is more into spirit's then myself BUT you never know, Lentenor was still in LVR's Stomach when His big brother passed, SO my sister says his spirit is with Lentenor, that is why he reacted the way he did with Gretchen Jackson, Like he was saying, "Don't worry, I am fine"....

Marigold,

So Sorry to hear about "Carly" and "Z", I myself am a animal lover(ALL), I had Horses growing up in Vermont, I currently have a bunch of Cats(Cheetah, Tiger, Puma, Cougar, Summer, Gizmo), A couple were Feral Cats and Homeless Cats that I rescued...So my Heart goes out to you, Good Luck with Carly & Z...

Greg J. 02 Apr 2009 3:34 PM

Well, it's not LVR's fault that she's had all colts, that's up to the stallion in the boy or girl department.

What a cute description of Lentonor as a baby.  But.....had a filly long time ago who jumped a low spot in the fence (yikes!) to come hang out with us people for a while. Same filly, when we let the mare out to graze in a big hay field, left mom again to come visit with us.  And we weren't there for her birth, she came between checkups during the night.

And some of them will talk to people.  I can imagine that if Lentenor was getting scratched, which most foals love, then when Gretchen stepped back to look at him, his response was, "Hey, watch cha doin?  More scratching."

Very young babies may be very shy and some of them may stay that way.  But to me, one of the characteristics of the babies is they get curious about everything.

This shows the proper handling Lentenor received from the staff, LVR's mothering, and his own demeanor.

HorseFirst 02 Apr 2009 3:47 PM

Lentenor is exceptionally precocious. Expect wonderful things from him!

And Nicanor, when he realizes that race time is NOT play time. God Love him, cause we sure do! Such a beautiful boy!

MVH 02 Apr 2009 5:18 PM

GregJ- Great stuff, thanks. I knew Mrs Jackson felt a closeness to Barbaro, hadn't heard anything about Nicanor or Lentenor. Everything I hear now makes me think Lentenor might really be something in the making. I don't mean to demean Nicanor in any sense, he's just immature, that's all.

I recently read that it appears the newborn foal gets it's clue on how to act and accept human handling from the dam and not from vigorous interaction at birth. Certainly appears that way with La Ville Rouge, her offspring are awesome. This is one special mare.

FYI - It was said in the book Barbaro, A Nations Love Story, that though La Ville Rouge's sire, Carson City, was a sprinter, her personal preference was 1 1/8 to 1 1/4 mile. I found that little known or seldom repeated fact  very telling, coupled with Dynaformers' distance loving representation.

Dona 02 Apr 2009 9:04 PM

LVR is a GREAT mare!  Heard someone talking about a GREAT mare on TVG this morning and my immediate thought was LVR is a GREAT Mare.  She's produced great babies and has taught them well, so that they grow up to be wonderful, sweet horses.  WHen is LVR's birthday?  We should all celebrate her!

MVH 03 Apr 2009 12:01 PM

Greg J, Horsenut,Stardust,  Marigold, Lou and all :

I was told today that Nicanor was mentally retarded due to his slow learning, is that true? Since your horsefolks and I am just learning bout them......

HorseFirst, I read an article on thehorse.com and it mentioned Nicky's height so I just guessed they knew more than I..  Hope he is 16 hands plus, was not Barbaro 17 hands at 3 years ?

We need MM's imput here!!!

May the horse be with you!!

Ragsy 03 Apr 2009 6:58 PM

Marigold, sorry to hear about your babies, I know that is hard for you.  My thoughts are with you. I too am an animal lover of all types. I have lost dogs and cats to cancer and it is never easy to watch them go through that. I currently have 1 cat named MS Kitty, that we recently rescued and she is such a diva! I also have 5 dogs ranging from a German Shephard, 2 mix breeds, a Cocker Spaniel and a Rat Terrier. Their names are Lady Alexandria(Alex for short), Duke, Daisey, Penny and Ar-Tie. Three of these dogs are rescues and ages range from 9 years to 17 years. So with that comes a long list of ailments and vet visits. Our 17 year old Duke(mixed cocker spaniel) is nearly blind and is slightly diabetic.

P. S. I think the secret for his long life is Penny the cocker spaniel.  He just loves that girl. They have been together since he was 3 years old and she was 1 year old.

Penny 04 Apr 2009 3:59 PM

Ragsy Nicanor is not retarded.  I won't mention who is but it sure isn't him.  :)  He has a brain and he uses it for positive things.  Love you Nicky Knocks.

stardust 05 Apr 2009 3:22 PM

question about Nicanor I heard some chatter that he might be going to the derby? can anyone comment?

Erin 05 Apr 2009 6:10 PM

Ragsy, Nic is NOT retarded, don't know who you heard it from, it is nonsense!

horsenut23 05 Apr 2009 9:42 PM

Ragsy,

NO!, "Nicanor is not "Mentally Retarded", He is just immature, He is still learning, Alot of horses go through this, Once he learns to finish first, He will be fine....Just a slow learner....

Greg J. 06 Apr 2009 9:24 AM

I have been in love with this family since I followed Barbaro. I check every day to see if there is any new news about the crew. Thank You to all of you who provides the information for those of us who follow all of these wonderful horses! I am looking forward to Nicanor's first win and Lentenor's first race, and also Babynor's name!

Berner05 06 Apr 2009 11:04 AM

Thank You GregJ., Stardust,Horsenut,

I wasnt sure, cause Nicky was learning slowly, I told that fella that I thought he was ####.

Ragsy 06 Apr 2009 12:50 PM

Erin, Nicanor has never won a race.  HE'S NOT GOING TO THE DERBY.  But he is a fine horse, and hopefully he will win his next race.

Mary 07 Apr 2009 9:17 AM

Happy Birthday, LaVille Rouge! Lots of love and enjoy time today, your day, with Babynor! Love you!

sandieh 08 Apr 2009 8:18 AM

yeah i thot it sounded wrong maybe people were just hoping but if you go ntra.com and look on the derby page where people are saying who they think will win nicanor is on there

Erin 08 Apr 2009 11:19 AM

Nicanor is beautiful, when running the muscles roll, his butt is beautiful( my favorite ) now, those muscles are downright awesome in action... His dad is 24 years and I pray his health is great with him having no diseases... Long life Dynaformer, my wish to you live to be 40 or more just for me......next time Nicky runs I will be there watching and betting on him, just for him... love to Nic forever!!!!

Ragsy 09 Apr 2009 5:33 PM

awwwww... get well soon, little one!

Lentenor and Nics, I'm still rooting for you guys!! Lentenor seems to be a great-tempered Gentleman!!!

xmrsxmansonx 10 Apr 2009 11:30 AM

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SWEET lENTENOR!!!!

and many, many more to come.....love ya!!!

Ragsy 20 Apr 2009 12:29 PM

A few broken ribs is very tough, but at least he made it out alive. We lost a Dynaformer colt because he was just too big to be born. That completely broke our hearts and we have never completely gotten over it. It's imperative to remember how delicate these wonderful animals are.

Colmel 27 Apr 2009 9:18 AM

any new updates on the new foal?? Its been soooo long now and I have not hear anything!!

courtneync05 30 Apr 2009 5:17 AM

Kimberly at Mill Ridge stated, that LaVille Rouge was bred back to Dynaformer 4-26-09 then in 2 weeks she will be checkked to see if she is pregnant!!! WOW, maybe a filly!!!!

isnt that the greatest!!

Ragsy 30 Apr 2009 7:35 PM

Getting worried about the new foal!!  No pitures, no name, no comments if the infection cleared up. Any new news would be great. Hows Mom doing?

rroderick3 02 May 2009 7:32 PM

Does anybody know the name of the new foal? i know there's Nicanor and Lentenor, and there was Barbaro, but not sure about the new one. P.s all of the brother's are beautiful xx Good luck to all of them, and la ville rouge.

Nic xxx 04 May 2009 2:41 PM

If you go to

www.millridge.com/barbaro-guestbook.aspx you will see updates about LVR and her foal. From what I read he is doing good since his surgery

BigMommaLovesHorses 05 May 2009 4:43 AM

I would like to see some new photos of lentenor to see how his growth is coming along.  I can't wait to see him breeze then we will know what he has got. I hope they don't mess him up by the choice of the jockey.  Like they did with Nicaonor his first time out and i hope they let the horse run on his own.  Maybe a turf race whould be nice right out of the gate i noticed they finally did that with nicanor and they were successful every horse is not the same though people need to realize that.  I would like to see this horse win because i think he could be as talented has his brother but i just can't see that right now.  From the way it is sounding he will not run as a two year old.  I think it is stuiped if he would happen to lose which i hope wouldn't happen but you would have the same short window as you did with Nicaonor.  And we all think Churchhill downs on the first saturday in may 2010 which i realize hopes would be hight but i think if they were the hype with Nicanor it should be no problem.  I would not choise the same jockey as nicanor.  Because i think they shoot them selfs in the foot by doing that.

MATT H. 15 May 2009 11:32 AM

lentenor hasnt even raced yet nicanor's been raced when is his brother

HorseLover12 18 May 2009 9:13 PM
