Nicanor Works; Special Offer

On a rainy Sunday morning, Nicanor posted his second official work at Keeneland when he breezed four furlongs in :50.4. His time ranked 45th out of the 63 horses who worked at that distance April 19.

“He went nicely,” commented trainer Michael Matz, who also said the 3-year-old Dynaformer colt will be leaving Keeneland in the next couple days. “He’s going to run up north at Delaware.”

Delaware Park’s meet begins April 25.

Also, with the Barbaro Memorial fast approaching, at this time ExclusivelyEquine.com, the official store of The Blood-Horse, would like to extend a special offer to all of Nicanor’s fans and followers.

The store only has a few copies of the book, Barbaro: The Horse Who Captured America’s Heart, left in stock. The price on this title has never been lower, and as a reader of Tracking Barbaro's Brothers you can save even more. If purchasing, enter the promotional code NICANORFAN at checkout and receive an additional $5.00 off the already low price of $15.95.

Buy the book, guys!! It's really a good read, the photos are wonderful, and you won't be sorry.........

Safe trips to Nicanor, and best wishes to all his connections.

We were all so hoping for Churchill Downs next weekend.  Thanks for the news Amanda

MJ 19 Apr 2009 1:17 PM

Good Luck sweet prince in Delaware. My eyes as well as everyone's eyes will be dazzled by as you follow Barbaro's path. My hat is off to all that have trained you.

Kathy 19 Apr 2009 1:20 PM

Right on Nicanor!  You're getting better with age.

Amanda that link doesn't work for the book.  :(

stardust 19 Apr 2009 1:22 PM

There is a 1 mile maiden on May 2nd at Delaware Park.  I bet that is his race.  After Hennigan finished 3rd or 4th last week I bet Michael decided to give Nicanor more of a rest.

MJ 19 Apr 2009 1:32 PM

I stand corrected on all counts our boy is coming home to Fair Hill sooner than I thought and then off to Delaware which is not that far away.  Lentenor should be finishing his training shortly as I think Nick did it in May last year.  Will be good to have the bro's together soon.  Sure hope You Bet carries Delaware racing so I can watch him.

lobieb 19 Apr 2009 1:33 PM

It's a wonderful book and the pictures are great.  I bought it when it first came out and I still enjoy it.  Good luck Nicanor!  Have a safe journey!

Penny in Texas 19 Apr 2009 1:38 PM

Thank you for the update.  Look forward to his next race.

Does anyone know if the new baby is responding well to treatment?  Does anyone know if any of LVR other foals have had these sort of complications?

Cassidy 19 Apr 2009 1:40 PM

Hmmm looks like Edgar is on Dunkirk for the KD.

There has been no official announcement who will ride Dunkirk, but it is expected that Edgar Prado, who rode the colt in his career debut, will get the mount.

stardust 19 Apr 2009 1:42 PM

Awww, Delaware?  Once, I saw the work, I was really hoping I would be lucky enough to see Nicanor break his maiden at Churchill on Derby weekend.

Best Wishes and Good Luck in Delaware

RhondaH 19 Apr 2009 1:46 PM

The book is great and the pictures are magnificient.  Good Luck in Delaware sweet Nicanor!!!

Ragsy 19 Apr 2009 1:48 PM

I will have to check out that book. Barbaro was a great horse.

I see FF worked a mile today at 1:39 I think but closed the last 3/8 in just over 36. Jones said he was not blowing hard at all. I think FF will be this year's winner. He has the best turn of foot and appears to be a push button horse.

Mike 19 Apr 2009 2:27 PM

Ragsy

I just ordered it.  How are ya?

stardust 19 Apr 2009 2:44 PM

Thanks for the news! I wonder if they are planning for Nic to run in the Barbaro Stakes in July there at Delaware Park? That would be nice since the Barbaro Stakes at Pimlico was cancelled...

Karen in Texas 19 Apr 2009 2:55 PM

Will you people please get a life!

Forthegipper 19 Apr 2009 3:15 PM

Thanks Amanda and bloodhorse, now if we just knew how La Ville Rouge and the baby is doing. I would be a happy camper!

Debbie 19 Apr 2009 3:22 PM

Debbie - as I told Karen, PA in the last post:

Given the stages of life the foal and Lentenor are in, there are going to be less updates because there are fewer “newsworthy” events about their progress. Nicanor, on the other hand, is racing and working, meaning there are going to be more updates.

The last update on both the baby (minor troubles but nothing unusual) and Lentenor (still doing well in training) is less than three weeks old. As I have explained in the past, I am not going to give weekly updates on every individual member of the family. My schedule doesn't accommodate that (especially with the Derby coming up), nor do the schedules of those who have the horses in their care.

The above isn't said to be mean, and I hope you understand. Lack of weekly updates is not a reason to get stressed out. Mill Ridge has never failed to provide information in a timely manner, when there was something new to report. Please do not stress over this.

aduckworth 19 Apr 2009 3:26 PM

That is a great deal on the book! Waiting for news of events of this horse family is like waiting for Christmas for a little kid! We know you are busy, so an extra big THANK YOU for keep the information and pictures coming in such a timely manner.  Thanks, again.

MLS 19 Apr 2009 3:43 PM

Thanks for the information Amanda, good luck to Nic in Delaware!

horsenut23 19 Apr 2009 4:31 PM

just ordered it :)

Ashley 19 Apr 2009 5:24 PM

I hope Nicanor runs any other day but May 2 because I'd like to head north to see him, but not on Derby day.  It would be an excellent way to run a low-key fourth try though.  Looking forward to Lentenor joining his older brother at Fair Hill.

Grey K 19 Apr 2009 5:55 PM

Amanda: Thanks for all the great info you post. It is much appreciated. Nic will do great at Fair Hill and Del Park and Len will be at FH soon. Thanks for stating the obvious too with respect to the baby - no news is good news. He has a lot of growing up to do, and just started with a little adversity. Mill Ridge said it was no big deal, and we all need to relax, and understand this is a busy  time for everyone associated with these wonderful horses.

Lisa in CO 19 Apr 2009 6:37 PM

HelloStardust: hope everything is good with you.  Just disappointing Nic is going to Delaware, shoot it all....wont get to see him anytime soon, shuuucccks....I hope Nic is feeling well and isnt to stressed from all....pray his trip is easy on his beautiful self....

Ragsy 19 Apr 2009 7:16 PM

Thank you for the update. Good luck to our beloved Nicky in Delaware.

I have a hunch that the Jackson's will have a special treat for Barbaro Fans at the unveiling. I wouldn't be surprised if they released or handed out pictures of Babynor (Baby Brother #3) at that time.

PatCA 19 Apr 2009 7:26 PM

Just be safe Nicanor.

Luvthehorses 19 Apr 2009 8:09 PM

I was hoping to see Nicanor at Churchill 4/26/09 the day of the Barbaro Memorial.  What a treat for the fans.  I understand if the horse is not ready to race but if he is, it would be so nice for the fans.

Michelle 19 Apr 2009 8:33 PM

Hope that Nicanor has a safe trip to Delaware. We will follow you where ever you go. You are in our hearts and prayers. Barbaro won his first race in Delaware, maybe Nicanor will follow suit.

Amanda, thank you so much for the update. We are always glad to hear anything about the boys, all 3 of them. It doesn't matter how small it is, we love it all. Even though we aren't immediate family, we do feel like the FOB"s are a family because we care soo much about the happiness and safety of the boys.

So sorry Pitched Perfertly didn't do better in the Coolmore on Sat. It would have been nice for the Jackson's. They are such nice people. Looks like he ran out of gas in the finish.

Hope I can see Nicanor run in Delaware. I only get TVG. Although ESPN2 did cover the Coolmore. Can anyone tell me if TVG covers races in Delaware?

Lou in TX 19 Apr 2009 9:13 PM

good luck nicanor and stay safe I hope to see you one day Love Darlene.

darlene 20 Apr 2009 12:00 AM

Barbaro's B-day is coming up you guys.  WOW he has been gone two years and it feels like we just lost him.  These brothers really help with the pain of losing him.  I don't know about anyone else but I really miss him.

stardust 20 Apr 2009 12:34 AM

Ragsy.  As long as Nicanor is safe and healthy, I don't care where he is or what he is doing.  His welfare comes before anything else.  He is Barbaro's brother.  He is one special horse.  I really have come to love the big guy and Lentenor too.  Babynor too even though I haven't seen him yet.  Such an attachment to these brothers and the Barbaro family.  It is overwhelming.  :-)

stardust 20 Apr 2009 1:26 AM

Michelle

That is going to be one good day of history in the making.  I am sure that they will talk a lot about the Barbaro statue at the Derby.  I mean how many horses get a statue like this.  I wish Eight Belles had one.  Maybe it is a money thing or whatever but she deserves one too.

We love you Barbaro just as much as ever!!!!

stardust 20 Apr 2009 1:28 AM

Thank You - Thank You

I was right when I posted on here, when Nicanor was at Gulfstream, that he would go to Keeneland to work out. Then on to Fair Hill, and his next race would be at Delaware Park. Just lucky I guess.

MJ,  Hennigan finishing 3 or 4 has nothing to do with what Matz does with his training of Nicanor. They are two different horses.

Kathy,  Nicanor is not on the same path as Barbaro. He is still a maiden, remember.

Nicanor, good luck in Delaware. I will get to see you run.

Don 20 Apr 2009 8:47 AM

Good move Matz going to Delaware where the competition will be minimal and a win is the most important thing right now regardless of where he's running.Rhonda H ,no way would he put Nicanor under the glare of a circus atmosphere still being a maiden. If he didn't win they'd boo him off the track. This will be a easy way to get that first win.

The Phantom 20 Apr 2009 9:22 AM

Don, Not what I meant. I am aware Nicanor is still a maiden. Barbaro had his first win at Delaware and I am hoping Nicanor begins to win there as well. That is all I meant.

Kathy 20 Apr 2009 9:35 AM

Was hoping Nicanor might have gone to Churhill and raced there this weedend as I will be there for the Babaro statue ceremony this Sunday. Don't think I will ever make it to Delaware Park, I can only hope he does well there and moves on to a bigger track. I wish him well where ever he may go. Be safe and healthy Nicanor.

DONNA 20 Apr 2009 10:03 AM

Thanks for the update on Nicanor. Hope he has a very good and safe race next time out.

Just ordered the book, links worked fine.

Thanks!

Bianca 20 Apr 2009 10:13 AM

I also have the book and recommend it to others.

Good luck to Nicanor in Delaware!

Happy 2nd Birthday wishes to Lentenor!  May his favortie treats be plentiful today.

GinnieJ 20 Apr 2009 10:31 AM

Thank you for the info on Nicanor. It's always great to know what he's doing. I have a question if someone can please give me an answer I would greatly appreciate it. I'm sure you know that Rags to Riches is now in foal to henrythenavigator. But she just had her baby the end of March didn't she? Is this not too soon for her to be pregnant again? I'm worried sick. Next to Barbaro, Rags is one of the great loves of my life. I'll die if anything happens to her especially since in the last few months, I've read so much about mares dying due to foaling complications.

Ida Lee 20 Apr 2009 10:46 AM

Awesome he is going to Delaware!, Only 236 miles from me(Connecticut), about a 4 1/2 hour drive, I will be there for his Next race(My Second one of his!)..

This really threw me for a loop, Thought he was going to Churchill, Oh well, This should be good for Nicanor, He should fly under the radar as far as all the hoopla at Churchill...

Barbaro broke his maiden at Delaware on turf...

Amanda,

I was wondering, Does Delaware have the same type of policies as Keeneland?, As far as access to the Horses, Probably not, but figured I would ask...

Also, I Don't know much about Delaware, What kind of surfaces are there?, besides Turf, Of Course...

Once Again, Thanks for the Updates on Nicanor....

I was looking at Delaware's Condition book, As far as Nicanor's next race, Assuming he travels well, He most likely will have a work first, then race a MSW, So going by that, Either Saturday May 2nd, Race 3, MSW, 1 Mile OR Tuesday May 12, Race 3, MSW, 1 1/16 Mile but it is on Turf...Don't think he will go on turf unless he gets a few works...But I also said he would go to Churchill, It depends on alot of Varibles we just don't know about him, His trainer and his connections are really the only ones with a clue...

Greg J. 20 Apr 2009 11:06 AM

He should win next out, with another month of training and the horses he will face will be second tier at best.Phantom your right about running at Churchill , the fans would expect a win because of his brother's greatness.Seems like a good decision to get the first win in Delaware.

2 time valley player of the year 20 Apr 2009 11:11 AM

There is no one that would boo Nicanor off the track LOL!  That is really stepping over the line.

stardust 20 Apr 2009 11:20 AM

FYI,

Here is the legendary Champion, "Barbaro" on Oct. 4, 2005 breaking his maiden on the turf at Delaware Park, And Hopefully his little Brother will do the same!!!, Enjoy:

Chris.

That is my tri right now.  I want to go with Greg cause he almost always hits and knows horses inside and out.  He is a darn good handicapper.  I would love to see two Pletcher horses come into the tri and Chocolate Candy.  I think that FF will come in ahead of fourth though.  Then there is General Quarters.  Last time a horse like that popped up on this board, it hit good money. :-)  Right Greg?

stardust 20 Apr 2009 11:24 AM

Amanda.  I wasn't able to get it with the link so I just clicked on the right of the screen and clicked it on there.  I hope I got the right book.

Kbuckeye 20 Apr 2009 12:11 PM

Stardust- If the promotional code worked (and the book title was the same), then you got the right one.

Ida Lee - Rags to Riches had her baby at the beginning of March. Mares are commonly bred back within a month or so of giving birth.

aduckworth 20 Apr 2009 1:11 PM

Greg J.

Are you going to the K Derby?

stardust 20 Apr 2009 1:19 PM

Buttercup will get a donation from me today. Thanks Greg.

stardust 20 Apr 2009 1:21 PM

Amanda does your comment re: Rags2Riches mean that perhaps LaVille Rouge will be bred back to Dynaformer that quickly?  With his age of 24 that might be good though...Happy,Happy Birthday Lentenor!!!!

Ragsy 20 Apr 2009 1:22 PM

OK Amanda.  I got the right one cause it did take the promo code.  Are these dangerously low?  I should probably get a couple of my friends one.

stardust 20 Apr 2009 1:28 PM

Ida Lee, Rags is part of the money cycle now, she'll be bred every year on her 'foal heat' so she has the foal at the same time every year,

I also hope to never read she died of foaling complications, as have such greats as Lady's Secret, Weekend Surprise, Weekend-in-Indy, Chilukki, Nine Keys, Miss Alleged, Urban Sea, and oh, so many more....

da3hoss 20 Apr 2009 1:36 PM

da3hoss- Unless they changed their minds, Rags was NOT bred on her foal heat, per what I was told when I went to visit her. She had the baby almost two months ago, so that is plenty of time to skip the foal heat and still be pregnant. Please don't make assumptions about the care of a specific horse unless you have direct knowledge of said care.

For those wondering about what a "foal heat" is, please read the following story from our sister publication, The Horse (registration is free):

Stardust,

No Kentucky Derby for me this year, But I will drive down to Delaware to see Nicanor race and Break his Maiden ;)

Greg J. 20 Apr 2009 2:03 PM

Stardust,

Thanks for the donation to Equine Outreach....What an AMAZING horse that "Buttercup" is....

Greg J. 20 Apr 2009 2:05 PM

LOU IN TX,

I don't believe TVG carries Delaware Park, I think they only carry Dover Downs & Harrington Raceway, BUT Bloodhorse.com will have it here shortly after he wins, I mean runs, lol(Unless Amanda is busy, which if he runs on May 2nd at Delaware, I am sure she might be busy somewhere else, lol)

Greg J. 20 Apr 2009 2:16 PM

Greg J.  I would rather see Nicanor break his maiden than go to the Derby :)...  I wonder who he will be running against.  I hate wagering on KD but I will if I have to LOL!

stardust 20 Apr 2009 2:34 PM

Amanda - thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly on Rags pregnancy. She's so precious to me and your info makes me feel better. Also, I ordered the Barbaro book. Thanks for the link. I cannot wait for Nicanor's next race. I bet he wins this one. It's going to be so much fun watching his first win.

Ida Lee 20 Apr 2009 2:35 PM

This is off topic.  It is heartbreaking.  R.I.P. all horses!

www.bloodhorse.com/.../deaths-of-21-polo-horses-investigated

I wonder if they were poisined.  I can think of people that are so uncaring that they would do something like that.  It is sad to think that but I just wonder. Really really sad.  :-(

stardust 20 Apr 2009 2:44 PM

Thank you Greg J. for letting us know about Buttercup. I to donated. What a wonderful story. I hope she lives to a ripe old age getting carrots and peppermints every single day for the rest of her life.

Kathy 20 Apr 2009 2:57 PM

Rags2Riches and Henry The Navigator should have beautiful babies......I still want Curlin to be one of the chosen.

Stardust:

Iam in the process of getting a 30 acre plot bulldozed off so I can adopt/buy 2 slaughter bound horses. The fence is in need and slow progress due to all of the rain...When I adopt it will be because of Barbaro.....

Ragsy 20 Apr 2009 4:19 PM

Stardust, there are always some bettors who bet the chalk and boo the trainer, jockey and horse when he or she  loses ,I've  seen it many times . Betting any maiden heavily is dumb.I did not say he would be booed off the track , you have such a imagination when it comes to reading something and interpeting it so slanted. The expectations on this horse were way out of wack because of being  Barbaro's brother. So far he's a 3 time loser, who should get his first win at Delaware Park the horses he will be facing will be inferior to what he faced in Fl and he almost won there. As I said its a smart move. Now lets see what they do after he wins and how well  he progresses. He'll never be in the same class as his brother- peroid. You'll see Delaware races on TVG or HRTV so relax you'll see him run.

The Phantom 20 Apr 2009 4:51 PM

Stardust I stand corrected I did say he would get booed off the track.I was wrong in my last statement.

the Phantom 20 Apr 2009 4:59 PM

Kathy,

Thank You for your donation!, An Amazing success story for both "Buttercup" and everyone at Equineoutreach.com . It is remarkable what can be achieved through hard work and courage.

Greg J. 20 Apr 2009 5:01 PM

Ragsy - If Rags and Curlin were to get together and have a baby, it would produce the most beautiful and talented race horse in history and I would need oxygen since these two are my most loved creatures (together with the Barbaro brothers of course). I would like to take a moment and thank all those who give a home to abused and homeless horses. Throughout my life, I have taken in my "road side adoptions" mainly cats and dogs but how I wish I could have a horse or two. People who take care of these animals and love them are really something special as are their "babies".

Ida Lee 20 Apr 2009 5:14 PM

Well Mr. Phantom, I am always thinking more positively than you...like maybe on Nicanor's fourth time out, he will garner his maiden. Maidens are incredibly difficult to bet on, aren't they?

As I've said before, you will see greatness when Nicanor reaches 4. Nicanor is the effervescent comedian, enjoying the moment. All too soon, he will become serious like the business person carrying a briefcase to a meeting each morning. You will hear Nican-OOOOOOORRRRRR, you're the greatesttttttt!!! And you'll wish you had placed a bet on him.

Kathy 20 Apr 2009 5:18 PM

I'm sorry Stardust but why would you make the comment" I hope they weren't poisoned"? There could be a million reasons why these polo horses died. I don't understand why you would assume there was foul play. I read the same article and it never entered my mind that there was anything criminal. One should wait until they get the autopsy report back before throwing out comments like that.

Wanda 20 Apr 2009 5:46 PM

ragsy;

Congrats on getting the land and rescuing horses. Maybe you can foster some, with 30 acres, you would have room. :)

horsenut23 20 Apr 2009 6:00 PM

stardust....what Nicanor will be running against in Delaware will more than likely be a group of perpetual maidens...if he can't win under wraps against these he's in trouble.

Dead Heat 20 Apr 2009 6:05 PM

Hey, y'all.  Why all the concern about Rouge's colt & Rags being bred back?

Rouge's colt had minor complications and he was a very big guy.  I've had foals that have worse complications and recover without incident; these creatures can be remarkably resilient.

Rags can be safely bred 5-9 days after foaling (foal heat,) but usually they wait until the first heat following foaling.

These particular horses have the best care that can be provided and it's safe to assume that their owners are providing it to them.  It's not right to question that care unless you know what is going on; this is how rumors get started.

TBBreeder 20 Apr 2009 6:07 PM

I seen the Barbaro statue!!! I like what it said on the bottom about him, it made me want to cry TT___TT

stardust 20 Apr 2009 7:28 PM

thanks for the news on nicky, and the heads up on the offer.

christy tate 20 Apr 2009 7:38 PM

Hi Greg J...It's me Lou. I decided to add TX since there is a Karen from TX. Silly I guess. How lucky you are to live close enough to see Nicanor race. I was so hoping he'd still be in Keeneland in June. My granddaughter Claire would have had a memory forever if she had gotten to see him. Guess that won't happen now. The Phantom seems to think TVG will carry the Delaware races. I don't get HRTV because I don't have Dish Network. I have Direct TV. What is your feeling about I Want Revenge in the Derby? Seems FF is doing great also. I'm afraid Dunkirk will be out classed. He is one beautiful daple horse. Pioneer of the Nile also seems like a great horse. Was sorry to see that Stardom Bound wasn't running in the Oaks but glad her owner & trainer decided to put her health first. I've been trying to keep up with the horses but don't really know that much about any of them. Bloodhorse seems to be doing a pretty good job of keeping us informed. Can you tell me what is the ABR site? I don't know what that stands for. As you can tell I'm really a novice at this. I keep up with Bloodhorse and The Thoroughbred. Would like any other sites that are free. You take care..

Lou in TX 21 Apr 2009 12:07 AM

This is my first time on the blog.  I too greatly admired Barbaro from the first time he ran.  I think alot of the people here think because Nicanor is Barbaro's brother, he must be a geat horse.  Unfortunately, very few full brothers measure up.

Lou in TX;

horsenut23 21 Apr 2009 10:10 AM

TBBreeder,

No one is going to breed a mare back in 5 to 9 days on a live cover.  That isn't enough time for the uterus to clean itself out from the birth--they will not be able to get a clean culture that early.  Believe me, she won't be bred without a clean culture.

If she were to come back into a foal heat that early, she might be given hormones to short cycle her, so she would come back into season earlier than if everyone left nature to take it's normal course.

Ragsy, more power to you for taking in unwanted horses.  Just remember that the horses you take in need vet and farrier care and will probably need supplemental feeding.  I don't know where you live, but horses do not generally need a barn if they have a shed they can get out of the rain and the wind.  They will be a lot happier and healthier living outside 24/7.

Be careful you don't take in more horses than you can comfortably care for--you don't want to turn into a collector of animals and end up with horses that need rescuing from the rescuer.

By the way, a trainer I had years ago rented stalls over the winter at a farm that had a bunch of skinny horses that were being sent to slaughter.  He and the other trainers who rented stalls ended up feeding these horses.  He ended up buying one of the horses to save it from slaughter, a skinny palomino that he kept as a riding horse for his wife and kids.  Last I heard, she was in her mid 20s and boarded out at a farm.  Not all trainers are heartless and only interested in the almighty buck.  These trainers who donated feed and cared for these horses were from a cheaper track and ran the lower level claiming horses.  So, you see, not all cheap horses have the heartless trainers.

JAJ 21 Apr 2009 10:14 AM

I'm confused, the announcers on TVG said they don't run Maidens on Turf.  But that doesn't line up with Barbaro's first win and all that's

being suggested for Nicanor. Does anyone know if that is so?

Marigold 21 Apr 2009 11:16 AM

Concerning Nicanor's next race. Why does it have to be a mile or over. Delaware Park has 3 - 6 furlong races on 4/28  5/9 and 5/16. Racing a mile in his 2nd and 3rd start might have been a little to much to ask for this horse. Just a thought.

Lou in TX,

ABR, Is Alexbrownracing.com, A wonderfull, Informative site, He is an incredible person, I can go on and on about him, but check out his site, Take some time to navigate it, there are so many different aspects to the site, Blogs, Horse Rescue, He gives a daily entry on what he is up to, GREAT stuff on Barbaro and his family, etc....You and your Granddaughter,  Enjoy!

As far as the Derby, Your guess is good as mine, So many Great Horses, I honestly believe this is the greatest field in a long time(Even without "The Pamplemousse", "Old Fashioned", It is a shame they are injured, but glad neither is life threating!),

I have this gut feeling since day one on "Friesan Fire", I could ramble on and on Why I think he is going to win, but I won't!

"I Want Revenge", "Pioneer of the Nile", "Quality Road" are all awesome too, They could easily win also, along with a few others. You can rack your brain trying to figure it out, but it really depends on so many different aspects, How the horse is feeling that day, Weather, Track condition, Post Position, Works leading up to Derby, Jockey, Etc...

I will still be trying to figure it out right up to the last minute, But every year I get a gut feeling, and so far six out of the last seven Derby's I guessed correctly...

So with all that said, My Gut says "Friesan Fire" and Larry Jones will Win(Jones deserves it MORE then anyone in recent memory, With Eight Belles, Old Fashioned, He has had horses come in second twice, Etc...)

I also love "General Quarters" and "Chocolate Candy, And if Summer Bird makes it, WATCH OUT....Love the Bird!!!!

Greg J. 21 Apr 2009 11:23 AM

Some thoughts on Nicanor's speed -- I just noted that I Want Revenge breezed 5F on dirt at Chruchill today with a time of 1:01:60.

Back on 12/19/08, at Gulfstream on dirt, Nicanor breezed with a time of 1:01:80.

In races with horses that some have noted are unraced, less talented, etc., and seeing that (except for the first race wherein Nicanor sustained an injury) in Nicanor's recent two races he is right there with the winner and far ahead of the pack -- what are your educated thoughts about what Nicanor is lacking in ultimate performance?  Drive? Knowledge? Aggressive competitive instict?  The desire to win?

He has the speed. Thoughts?

BTY, this is certainly nothing negative about the gorgeous and carefully trained Nicanor.  Just a wonder about what this intersting blogger panel's serious thoughts are about Nicanor and what's holding him back from breaking his maiden.

Thanks for your considered feedback.

EVERYONE:

Please take a moment to say a special prayer for Larry Jones and his loss of the beautiful Eight Belles.. HRTV is showing an interview with Larry J. and it is one tear jerker....May God Bless Larry Jones today, tomorrow and forever!!!

JAJ, Stardust,Horsenut3:

I live in Oklahoma JAJ.

I will only take 2 older mares around 13 years or older, if found, they must be calm and gentle so a beginner can deal with them.  I have a Vet that cares for horses, he is my dogs Vet and the numerous ones that I have brought in that were abandoned.  He is used to me and all that I bring to him, he made me laugh when he said, it was a shame I did not get paid for my work.  What he did not realize was, I do get paid, it just is not in money.....

JAJ:  I do have one dog that I cant straighten out, he has separation anxiety and he is one trial, his father is a big dollar show, trial dog out of Tulsa, Ok. big dollar dog.  Beautiful GSDog who is in love with horses..

I am sorry Stardom Bound is grounded and out of racing for 60 days....I was going to bet on her, now it has to be R.Alexander....

Nicky is not measured against Barbaro by folks that love him, Nicky is GREAT in folks eyes that love him.

So have a great day!!!laugh, smile and have some fun...

Ragsy 21 Apr 2009 11:52 AM

For the record, the reason I originally asked about Rags being in foal so soon (to me) is because I'm a city girl who has never owned a horse and don't know much about a mare's pregnancy issues. I just wanted to make sure that the time span for the pregnancy was normal for mares so that I wouldn't have to worry about this particular horse who I love so much. When my cat spits up a hairball, I get nervous so forgive me if I inadvertently started something that was not my intent. I worry - it's what I do.

Ida Lee 21 Apr 2009 11:59 AM

Lou in TX---Have I started a trend? I noticed there's a Penny in Texas now as well. It's not silly-it's all about communicating with anyone in any location about the thoroughbred racing community!

I don't know your area of Texas, but we have Charter Cable for our TV's and computer and we do not get TVG or HRTV on Charter. It was upsetting to miss so many races due to the lack of television coverage, so we began subscribing to "youbet.com" last year. They cover most tracks (even small ones), and the cost is minimal. Betting is not a requirement and it's easy to set up an account. The live coverage screen is small, but at least you can see the races.

The Internet has allowed access to many aspects of the lives of horses, including the anti-slaughter sites such as ABR and Americans Against Horse Slaughter. It really gives everyone a voice.

Karen in Texas 21 Apr 2009 12:07 PM

Wanda

There are some very cruel people in this world.  This was actually something that someone brought up to me yesterday.  It is sad sad sad.  I hope this is not the case.  Although there are people in every industry that don't give a hoot about the horse, that would way cross over the line.  :-(

stardust 21 Apr 2009 12:46 PM

Regarding the polo horses....of course the autopsy/toxicology reports will give answers, but there are grain fungi that can be dangerous, causing vascular consequences.

Karen in Texas 21 Apr 2009 12:56 PM

KAREN, PA.,

I believe "Nicanor" has all the tools he needs(Build, Turn of Foot, Natural Speed, Pedigree, Brain). He is just immature for his age, amd they have to instill in his brain that he has to PASS that horse in front of him, lol.

Confidence, In my opinion, is the most important thing for a horse to possess. They have to realize that they can outrun any other horse when ever they want.

In time, "Nicanor" will "GET IT", I believe, His last two races were great, even though he came in second both times, he lost to very good horses, I believe.  It is rare to have a horse break his maiden on the first few trys, if ever!

So bottom line, "Nicanor" will turn out to be very good, in due time.  It is also evident to me by the last post before this, that it looks like Mr. Matz had Hennigan in front so "Nicanor" could run him down and pass him, and I would continue to do this until the light goes off in "Nicanor's" brain that tells him, "Hey, I can beat this guy!!, I am not letting him beat me, The nerve....", lol...

   That is my two cent's....

Greg J. 21 Apr 2009 1:47 PM

Yeah you started a trend.  I am actually all over the place but a lot of this summer SF is where I am!  :)

Greg J.

I am up and down with FF.  I just don't know.  Don't you think that Pioneer of the Nile with GG is something to really consider?  I am only going to do boxes this Derby cause it is so close.  AND did you hear about Santa Anita?  Moving the Breeders Cup to Churchhill?  Dirt again on the BC?  Hmmmmmmmm  racing is in trouble with that track going under.  I hope they pull out of this.

I am thinking along the lines of water?  I hate not knowing.  This was horrible.  I love those kind of horses more than I do race horses.  :-(

stardust in San Fran 21 Apr 2009 2:21 PM

Karen, I personally would never bet a maiden, don't bet every race but go to the track with the plan on betting specific horses that I like on that days card.I doubt very much nic will run as 4 yr old he should be much more valuable as a stallion. As to why he hasn't won well he just got beat by a better horse in each race those days day.He should win easily next out against the type of maiden's he'll face at Delaware.I was wondering was the plan to run him on Keenland poly or was that idea canned after watching the way he trained -maybe he didn't like that surface? With so many knowledgible people  on this blog perhaps someone has a possible answer?Delaware races will be on TVG or HRTV for sure they always cover Delaware. You'll get to watch him break his maiden. As for the dead horses that is a shame and hope the investigation gets to the bottom of it asnd its not foul play.Saratoga has had maiden turf races for 2 year olds not sure for 3 year olds.As for stardom bound it was obvious she wasn't the same horse as last year and she looked thinner in her last race.

The Phantom 21 Apr 2009 2:24 PM

stardust in SF---Water is a possibility, but it would have had to be contaminated with "something". The vets are apparently thinking feed or supplements with some form of contamination. My first thought was grain/hay accidently having a mold/fungus from the "ergot" family. Preliminary reports should not take too long....

Kathy 21 Apr 2009 3:36 PM

Ragsy,

I think it is great that you are giving a couple of horses a home.  Just be sure you know what you are getting into.

Everything is going to be more expensive than it was last year.  Just be aware of what it will cost.  These are not dogs and cats that cost very little to keep.

Have you had horses before?  You will need to keep two because they are herd animals.  It really is cruel to keep a lone horse.  They will need a farrier to come out every 6 to 8 weeks to trim feet.  They will need yearly vaccinations.  You will need to worm every two months or so.  Plus you will likely need to supplement with purchased feed.

It is not cheap to keep horses.  Just be aware of the costs going in.

JAJ 21 Apr 2009 3:38 PM

Ragsy, I said before, God will shower you with blessings for the love and care that you show to unfortunate animals. You are a special person. Listen to JAJ and I know you will do as well with your horses as you do with your dogs.

Concerned Fan 21 Apr 2009 4:35 PM

I sure am glad I can get to Delaware Park in 1/2 hour. I can't wait to see Nicky run in person. Maybe I'll just ride my bike the whole 3 miles to Fair Hill to watch him train. I love Southern Chester County PA.

Yeah what makes me believe that this is foul play is because of the timing of it.  I would go to prison if I got ahold of anyone that did this on purpose.  I hope that it is innocent.  :(

You will do fine with the horses.  You are loving and caring and always put the horse first.  Your passion will take you there. :)

Greg J. --

Thank you!  Very thoughtful and knowledgeable feedback . . . sooooo Nic needs "confidence."

Man, if that were something he could glean from us, he'd have TONS of confidence.

It also piqued my interest that the racing venues changed.  It is logical to a great degree, as the Matz team moves N to Fair Hill. I just thought that Delaware may be lower profile for Nicanor.

You're right -- he's got the goods.  Hope he finds that push to pass whatever is in front of him.  What must be in his head . . . interesting.

For the Derby, I agree with many of you, but I am calling Freisan Fire as taking the Derby.

At Derby time, I always think about that recent, but already 3 years past, BARBARO domination! And then I'm nostalgic for Hard Spun (who I LOVED -- even though he placed, he was in them all !!!), Ragsy, Curlin, Street Sense and the rest of the gang, with us and passed.

Thanks again, Greg J.

Is everyone coming to Barbaro's statue unveiling this weekend at Churchill Downs?  Amanda, are you coming or is Bloodhorse covering?

MJ 21 Apr 2009 9:33 PM

Karen in Tx.....Lou in TX here. I'm from the Dallas/Fort Worth area. I keep reading that TVG will show the Delaware races. Lets hope they are right. I'll keep your idea in mind if this turns out not to be true. What part of the state are you from?

My daughter had 2 ponies when she was in grade school. Believe me there is an expense involved with horses. I had to rent a place to keep them and drive across town 2 times a day to care for them. But it was worth it because my daughter loved them sooo much. You can't go wrong owning horses if you can afford to keep them like they should be kept. They give back as much as you give them. Lots of love!!!

The KD is really shaping up to be a good one. So many wonderful horses. Just can't seem to make up my mind because I like them all.

Hope Nicanore does get the picture for the Jackson's sake. I agree that he just needs to mature some more. I'll be anxious to see how Lentenor takes to training. They say he takes is business very seriously. Good for him. They are such great horses. Wish we could see Babynor and how he is growing up. Sorry he got a hard start in life but maybe it will make him stronger down the road.

Greg J....do you think MM will take Nicanor to Fair Hill before he races him in Delaware? How far is Fair Hill from Delaware Park? I'm concerned about all the traveling around he's doing. I know it can be hard on the horses.

Hope you all have a great week.

Lou 21 Apr 2009 10:14 PM

Lou in TX---I, too, am from the D/FW metroplex. Going to the simulcast pavilion at Lone Star Park is another option for viewing the races, I guess.

Yes, the Derby this year looks as though it will be very exciting and competitive! I hope everything plays out safely and we really do see a few outstanding performances. It is difficult for me to pick one horse out of this group.

Nicanor will be fine with M. Matz giving him the time he needs to learn. I do hope he wins his next race!

Karen in Texas 22 Apr 2009 10:35 AM

MJ - Prior commitments to the magazine will keep me from attending, but one of my co-workers will be there for the event.

JAJ, Thanks for your assist what about daily worming meds for horses? Seems that would be best along with that solitude to keep flies off the beauties, I think around 20 years old is really what I need...Its a shame that 30 acres just sits here and not helping 2 horses..I will go back to thehorse.com and find more answers..

Ragsy 22 Apr 2009 10:51 AM

Hi Debbie..

I heard back from Mill Ridge this morning about La Ville Rouge and the new Jackson's baby.  Here is what they said.

We are all doing well – the foal had surgery on his navel and therefore we have been unable to get a good photo shoot set up.  He is a very active boy and his Mother is just wonderful with him!

I posted this on a new thread on ABR.  Made me smile.

How can you guys stand those winters over there?  I have a uncle that lives in Connenicut.  Isn't it bitter cold there in the winter?

Loads of love and hugs to Nicanor!!!

Will anyone be making a video so that those of us who can't be there might get to watch? I truly wish I could be there but money is tight and I'll be there in June with my granddaughter. Barbaro means so much to so many of us it would be great to see the unveiling of his statue. I know we'll see tid bites on the news but that's not the same as seeing the whole program with the Jackson's being there. Thanks for anything you can do to make this happen.

Karen in TX.....you're right Lone Star Psrk is an option. Thanks for the reminder. I don't go there very often because it's not that close to where I live( south of Dallas).

Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Greg J. 22 Apr 2009 3:48 PM

Ragsy,

You really need an equine vet to give you the best advice for your area and your field re worming.  There isn't a daily worming medication that I have ever heard of.  I don't make those kinds of decisions on my horses--they are always either in the care of a big breeding farm or under the watchful eye of a trainer so I'm not up on the day-to-day aspects of caring for horses.

You might want to rethink the age of your prospective rescues or rehomes.  Twenty years is quite old for a horse.  Older horses are much harder to keep--why start with something that is so difficult, especially if you are inexperienced.  You really have to be on top of older horses and a novice person might not see trouble brewing until it is too late.

Older horses are not as likely to be rideable.  That's not to say it isn't possible, but it is less likely.  I think there is a 30 year old endurance horse who actually competes in endurance events, but he would be by far the exception.  I just think that if you are going go to the expense of rehoming a couple of horses, you might want to get a horse that will give you the most fun.

If you do get an off track Thoroughbred straight from the track, I hope you have someone experienced transition the horse from the track to farm life.  I would hate to see you get hurt.  Horses are  really big and quite dangerous.

It looks like the tracks are all going to get on board and be proactive about transitioning retirees from the track to a new career.

I just hope you take a horse that is going to give you a lot of pleasure.  There are a lot of horses out there who need homes, and sometimes those scarce homes go to the "lost-cause" type horse rather than the nice little horse who also needs a home.

It is a big commitment to take on two horses.  Don't expect them to be able to live off what your field produces.

JAJ 22 Apr 2009 4:49 PM

Awesome video of Zenyatta, filmed by the rider with a helmet cam. To bad an actual race couldn't be filmed from this perspective.

Rambo 22 Apr 2009 4:53 PM

YAY Nicanor is coming home. I live in Maryland, so you can bet i will be at Nicanor's races there.

Ragsy, you will be so gratified when you bring horses who need you into your life. I just got my first horse after 18 years of not having one, on Monday. He is not a thoroughbred, he is a 11 month 3/4 arab 1/4 morgan colt that i found on craigs list. When i first went to visit him i was less then thrilled about the conditions at the farm where he was, although he was obviously a little wild, he is in good physical condition with gorgeous long legs and a nice high action trot. That was the biggest factor for me choosing him to be mine, i knew i could put him in a better place and give him the attention and love he needed.

Although ive forgotten many things about horse health ive been reading up and trying to spend as much time with him as i can because he had never even had a halter on, never been lead, never been trailered, never been vetted and was still nursing on his dam, who i later learned had been pregnant for 8 years. It was a nightmare loading him and he nearly escaped. I was so afraid when i got him home he would  have hurt himself or be too wild for me to put a lead on but surprisingly he walked right out of the trailer and walked about 250 yards with me to the pasture like he had been doing it all his life.

He has only been here two days but he has a nice pasture with trees and a stream. He loves water. He is still shy and spooky when i reach out to him but if i allow him to approach me he nuzzles my neck and touches my nose with his. It is so adorable. I am hoping he will one day be a decent endurance horse. His breeding says he will.

However, all that being said, i have no illusions about the costs of horse care. It is very expensive. Luckily this guy has been on grass and very little grain so he is a pretty easy keeper. Ive vetted him (ugg) and the farrier is coming on friday to trim his hooves, That should be fun ! lol. Any advise you horse pros can give me would be great.

mdfanofracing 22 Apr 2009 5:30 PM

Zenyatta, what a lovely filly.  There is no doubt in my mind that Friesan Fire will win the Kentucky Derby.  I will be watching Nicanor on HRTV.

Mary 22 Apr 2009 6:24 PM

Thanks for the video of Lady Z. Greg, she is truely an amazing horse. I must admit it kind of made me sea sick though. LOL.

DONNA 22 Apr 2009 6:34 PM

Quality Road is my pick, but I Want Revenge and Dunkirk interest me a lot too.  Dunkirk looked good in finishing second!  The California horses look pretty good too, this seems to be a field that has talent running pretty deep.

Nicanor seems to need some distance, I really cannot come up with a legitimate reason to go short with him at this time.  With his size, length of stride, and the fact that he is not the best breaker in the field, give him some distance to settle.  Hopefully I can get to Delaware, its not that far from VA.  Or, hopefully he will come to Colonial Downs this summer, we have some pretty good racing and a beautiful track that is only 45 minutes away.  Glad that this years foal is healing and getting well.

Springsmom83 22 Apr 2009 7:36 PM

Stardus in San Fran....Our winters in Texas have been very mild for quiet a while now. They are saying the flees will be really bad this summer because we didn't have a hard freeze for several days to kill them out. The summers do get a little warm though. We usually have at least 20 to 30 days of temps in the 102 to 103 degree range. Our springs are very delightful but then again we may not have much of a fall. It's really been crazy the past few years. You ought to plan a trip to TX. You'll never regret it.

Our Babynor has had surgery!!! No wonder we haven't had pictures yet. Hopefully he'll heal real soon. His public is getting restless. Not that he knows we're waiting or how much love is out here for him. Hopefully we'll get introduced to him soon. Glad to hear is an active youngster.

Lou in TX 22 Apr 2009 10:40 PM

FYI,

It was just announced that Grade I winner "Visionaire" has been retired, Trained by Mr. Matz and Owned by  Vision Racing and Team Valor, He won five of 12 starts and earned $465,882, He is being retired from racing after being unable to come back following an injury he likely suffered in his victory in the NetJets King’s Bishop Stakes (gr. I) at Saratoga.  In addition to the King’s Bishop, Visionaire won the Gotham Stakes (gr. III) and finished third in the Risen Star Stakes (gr. III) and Northern Dancer Stakes (gr. III). The colt was bred in Kentucky by Reiley McDonald.  “Visionaire most likely suffered a knee chip in the King’s Bishop,” Matz said in a release from Team Valor. “His next two races were unlike him. Surgery was performed by Dr. Larry Bramlage last fall, but he has not trained to our satisfaction, so the owners have decided to retire him, rather than blemish his racing record.”

Shows you what type of trainer Mr. Matz is, Rather then do further damage, He is doing the right thing, For the Horse, One more example that he puts the Horse first rather then anything else, Well Done...

Enjoy a Happy, Healthy, Long life "Visionaire"....

Greg J --

This video of Zenyatta Working is abosultely fantastic !!!!!!  Didn't know it existed, and it was an amazing ride !  Thanks for posting.

Also, great news about "Babynor" -- you just had the feeling that a little more was going on, and the operation on the navel was it.  Sooo happy to hear all is well now, and of course that the magnigicent mama, LVR, is the great dam(e) she is !  You remember Barbaro had a little leg problem as a youngster, and he sure turned out great.

Like all of you, I am MOST anxious to see what the new foal looks like.  Can you imagine how beautiful Lentenor looks?  With Nicanor as gorgeous as he is, this equine family is certainly blessed with beauty, as well as talent.

Thanks again, Greg J.

Karen, PA 23 Apr 2009 1:00 PM

OMG - I just heard on the news that a Pharmacy in FL filled a prescription for the polo ponies and used too much of a deadly ingredient. I went into shock and missed a lot of the report. I can't stand it that these beautiful creatures died this horrible death because of a MISTAKE.

Ida Lee 23 Apr 2009 1:08 PM

FYI,

A Florida pharmacy said Thursday the business incorrectly prepared a supplement given to 21 polo horses that died over the weekend while preparing to play in a championship match. They found the strength of an ingredient in the medication was incorrect, which caused the horses to die.

I honestly don't care if they say it was an accident.  They should be held accountable, and lose their license to sell any kind of medication, and go out of business, and whoever screwed up, should be put in jail!

What if 21 children died, or 21 adults died, due to a "Mistake" ?  Trust me, It would be looked at in a different light, My point is, Why???, It should be treated in the same exact manner, but you watch, they will get a slap in the wrist....Horrible!!!

Greg J. 23 Apr 2009 2:17 PM

First time poster, long time reader here. About to become really disliked, but I don't care.

I am not sure I have ever heard more excuses---Wait, make that more rose-colored glasses, delusional excuses---for a race horse EVER. Moreover, when they aren't even legitimate or deserved.

Nicanor has had three starts, if he hasn't figured out what to do yet, he's already in trouble. You may never see him on a track at age 4 if he doesn't get it together, so hopping onto that bandwagon ("Just wait until he's 4") is driveling nonsense.

He is NOT fast. He's just not. Someone tried to compare some work at Gulfstream Park of Nicanor's against the work of I Want Revenge elsewhere. First of all, LEARN something about racing, I am begging you, after reading the incessant, ignorant nonsense posted here! You have no idea what kind of works those were. IWR could have been simply breezing (by definition, done without asking or encouragement) and Nicanor could have been all out. He's been all out in his races too, and can't get there against cheaper horses. Either way, works are not races, they never are, and if anyone here thinks Nicanor could finish 2nd by a nose in a race to the likes of 'Revenge, then they are seriously disturbed.

You don't take a horse to Delaware, after trying the big boys in FL and making a brief stop at Churchill for any other reason than fleeing to easier pickins. It's that simple. If he bombs at DEL, plan on the headline declaring his retirement to be forthcoming.

I realize people here love him because of Barbaro, and all the never-ending rambling connected to that, but maybe two posts I have ever read here were 100% objective, realistic and read as though they were posted by anyone over the age of 12.

There are even a couple of regular (translation=interminable) posters here who I frankly don't even think like horse racing one little bit. That alone takes all credibility away from those people, and makes one wonder what the motives really are.

I will leave this as simply Nicanor will not win his next out (Aren't you all tired of declaring every race he's entered in the one he wins?? He always disappoints, in that regard, not to mention it's just stupid to read when he keeps getting beat).

Furthermore, if he doesn't pull a win out one of the cheaper tracks up in the NE area, plan your retirement party now. Every horse he has ever faced in his brief "career" so far have gone on to do exactly nothing. Not exactly flattering your buddy "Nicky Knocks" (and seriously, what is THAT ridiculous nickname about?)

Retirement...it's coming. I'd be far less surprised by that than I would this horse ever winning a race at this point. Since they'll never drop him into the claiming ransk, I'll stick with the bet on retiring.

Of course, then you'll just swap out your Nicanor hysterics onto the next and the next and the next, and seeing as how that mare is apparently being bred into the ground to repeat what will never be repeated, I guess this is a never-ending cycle of lunacy.

Lastly, I find it amusing that the moderator of this blog has to explain to you all like a group of Kindergartners because you so don't get it. You don't get that there's life off this blog, that the entire world, even the entire racing world, does not even come close to revolving around this breeding melee. And even then, you still don't get it, even when it's outlined for you. More power to him/her, it must take nerves of steel.

One More Thing,

U.S. Polo Association Executive Director Peter Rizzo said prior to the results of what killed these athletes:

"There are no words to describe the grief and sadness shared by everyone -- particularly the devastated owners of those magnificent horses.  Players form strong emotional bonds with the horses they ride. I've heard a couple of polo players who were affected with this loss the other day, a couple of them I don't think have left their house since Sunday night," Wash said. "There were a lot of tears there -- these big, tough guys just on their hands and knees, crying over what happened. The scene can be described as almost like an airplane crash that involved not human life, but horses, It was horrific."

This Polo Tragedy has gotten me all worked up, so, I figured I would do a 180 degree change of course, and post this, The most amazing video, with the Kentucky Derby next week, I figured what else could be better then to show the stretch run of the Derby from 1987----2006...

Starting with the Legend, Alysheba(R.I.P), and finishing with the Greatest of them all, Barbaro(R.I.P.)....

Amanda, do you know if Nicanor is back at Fair Hill yet?  Will we see coverage of Lentenor's arrival as we did Nicanor's?

Marigold 24 Apr 2009 3:05 PM

FYI Fair Hill Training Center is about 1/2 hour haul to Delaware Park, Nicky is not on the card this Saturday which is opening day, My guess is that Matz will enter him next Saturday at Delaware Park and Nicky will win his first race on the same day his big brother Barabro won the KD.

stardust 25 Apr 2009 11:35 AM

Logic Reason & Objectivity. oh my: I have to agree with your comments about finding a soft spot for him to break his maiden. It certainly looks like that's what they are doing. As far as the other comments, alot of the people on here love horses and in itself that's not a bad thing even if they can't talk "racetrack". So take it for what it is and post your comments, good or bad that's what a blog is all about.

Wanda 26 Apr 2009 10:02 AM

Logic Reason...What are you doing?  You should have your blood pressure checked, because after reading your post, I would say that it went up ten-fold.  You also might want to consider going to another blog, where your mental and physical health will not be put in jeopardy.  Your post was simply awful.  I learned absolutely nothing, and that is what I'm here to do, LEARN.

After reading your comment "he can't get there even with cheaper horses" there is no doubt in my mind that you know nothing about horses.  I will not read anything further from you.

We all know that Nicanor is a fine horse.  His half brother "Man In Havana" was retired before he ran his first race, because the trainer was of the opinion that he didn't like racing, so they gelded him and he is now a pleasure horse.  Matz knows what he's doing with Nicanor.

Mary 26 Apr 2009 11:30 AM

I am all for objectivity, but this is the Barbaro Brother's Blog. So why not one and all have a little fun discussing the possibilities of Nicanor and his brothers. It is not fun for me anyway to periodically have a reality check from someone. If Nicanor doesn't have it, and that is always a possibility, M.M. will relieve the reality checkers of their torture. In the meantime, let's enjoy the moment. I enjoy the photos. I enjoy most of the articles and I love the Amanda updates on the brothers. What matters most is the brothers.

Kathy 26 Apr 2009 11:40 AM

Greg J.

I so agree with you on the polo ponies.  Those people need to do some hard time.  That was no accident.  It was carelesness.  They should be fined, thrown in jail and have to answer for this.  Yeah if this was people, they would be looking at murder charges or manslaughter at the very least.  Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

stardust 26 Apr 2009 11:48 AM

Stardust: Enlighten me on why it was "no accident". The company was totally upfront with their comments concerning this tragedy and I'm sure the polo team has retained a lawyer. It was a terrible thing but let them sort it out and let them make the comments okay?

Wanda 26 Apr 2009 12:05 PM

JAJ:

Thank You, for such good advise on horses. I have been working to reseed much of the 30 acres and would never rely on it for feeding a horse, far as I am concerned its really ugly ground.  At the house its clay and on top of the hill its sand so, whats best for the horse maybe, its not suitable for a horse.

Do I need to have a horse person over to look at the property first?? I just dont have a lot of knowledge about horses, just have to learn.

Ragsy 26 Apr 2009 12:06 PM

Kathy, you are so right!!!

Greg J,Stardust:

I read an article on the computer that this same pharmacy was responsible for the death of a racehorse and the lawsuit "wrongful death" was thrown out...so wrong, their should be punishment here!!!

Ragsy 26 Apr 2009 12:11 PM

JAJ:

I wanted to ask you, what is the General Quarters chances at the Derby, I was stunned when I looked his pedigree up,it is simply wow!!

Ragsy 26 Apr 2009 12:13 PM

Wanda.

I said it was carelessness.  These people like Ragsy said, have screwed up before.  This went way over the line.  They need to be more careful.  If they are going to be mixing drugs, they need to be very careful.  This killed 21 horses.  It was not an accident.  It was pure neglect.  I am not saying they did it on purpose.  I beieve that they just weren't paying attention to what they were doing.

stardust 26 Apr 2009 12:37 PM

I have heard that La Ville Rouge new foal colt looks just like Dynaformer, wonder if he will have the same attitude... posted this under "its a boy" also!!!

Ragsy 26 Apr 2009 12:52 PM

I agree with you Stardust if it was neglect it will come out when the whole story is told. But in the meantime lets not speculate on what happened, lets just agree that it was a very, very tragic thing to have happened.

Wanda 26 Apr 2009 12:58 PM

Wanda.  Deal :-)

stardust 26 Apr 2009 1:51 PM

Right back at ya Stardust! You have a great day okay?

Wanda 26 Apr 2009 2:40 PM

General Quarters has a pretty good pedigree.  He would be my 2nd pick.  Friesan Fire has by far the best pedigree out of all the derby horses.  He's my 1st pick.  He hasn't lost a race since they put the blinkers on him.

Mary 26 Apr 2009 2:47 PM

HiYaa Mary,

seems like Friesan Fire is pretty close to the Generals pedigree x for Secretariat is closer to the 3rd generation. He is line bred on Big Red and Bold Ruler.

Boy,oh boy I just love them both. I want the Friesan Fire for Larry Jones and the General for the 75 year old trainer Tom Mc. dont remember his last name completely..

Ragsy 26 Apr 2009 5:06 PM

Logic Reason & Objectivity, oh my... If you have been reading this site then you know how much we all loved Barbaro and love all his full brothers. I think we are all aware that racing may not be Nicanors thing but that doesn't mean we love him any less. We have somewhat adopted the Barbaro brothers and will follow thier future no matter what it holds. We also love horses just for being horses so please don't hold that against us. My daughter had 2 ponies so I know how much effort and $ it takes to care for one the way they should be cared for. You are welcomed to commit any time you fell the need, just be aware that we all love horses and have a soft spot in our heats for them, especially the Barbaro brothers. We really try to good by funding the Barbaro Laminitis Fund and helping horses in need. Please try not to be so judgemental of some of our bloggers. Like I said, you're welcome anytime. Maybe you could contribute something positive for all of us. We all like to leaarn.

Lou in TX 26 Apr 2009 5:10 PM

Ragsy,

I don't think much of General Quarter's chances in the Derby.  Too big a race for a trainer without the experience of getting a horse to a big race.  It is a whole different ball game getting a good horse to the races when he is ready and the race comes up in the condition book than it is getting a good horse to one particular race.

I'm not as enamored with the owner/trainer McCarthy as the rest of the world is.  He has not given credit to the trainer who actually did a lot of the training of the horse over the wnter, taking an unruly horse and making him a stakes winner.  I can't remember the other trainer's name, but he fixed a lot of issues General Quarters had and McCarthy is not giving him the credit he deserves.

Right now, my favorites are I Want Revenge (his Wood was an INCREDIBLE race), Pioneerof The Nile and Regal Ransom who is really blossoming right now.  Quality road came back from his gallop with the quarter crack bleeding through the patch.  Not good.  This is a wide open Derby--any one of about 10 or 12 horses could win and would be deserving of the win.  I don't think Friesan Fire will have the foundation with the layoff.  He's never gone 9f.  Ditto with Square Eddie, but at least he raced two weeks before the Derby.  I am hoping for Square Eddie to do really well since he is a Canadian bred and I'm Canadian.

Ragsy, you absolutely should have someone who knows their way around horses kept in pasture to come and look over what you are planning to do.  Fields need to be managed.  Horses are notorious for getting themselves hurt or killed when you least expect it.  I'm not the best one for advising you on this.  I haven't been responsible for the day-to-day care and feeding of a horse for a LONG time.

JAJ 26 Apr 2009 6:48 PM

U too Wanda. :)  Today there has been a lot of tears.  I just love Barbaro more and more all the time.  There is only one Barbaro and today was obvious that he is the worlds best horse with the best owners, trainer and jockey and exersise rider.  That statue is breathtaking. Nothing comes close.  Still kinda teary eyed but this too shall pass.

stardust 26 Apr 2009 10:28 PM

Ragsy, like JAJ said, the long layoff may hurt Friesan Fire, but I'm going with him anyway.  I would love to see General Quarters take the Derby.  I like both of these horses.

JAJ, Ragsy: Why would Larry Jones lay Friesan Fire off for so long?  Barbaro had a five week layoff.

Mary 27 Apr 2009 9:18 AM

Are there pictures you can post Amanda? I live in the Great White North so I have no shot of ever seeing the monument.

Wanda 27 Apr 2009 10:19 AM

JAJ:

Thank you for the information, all of it has been very benificial and welcomed.

I like all of the horses you mentioned, but really do like the General.

You did not mention Desert Party, I thought he was looking very good but Regal Ransom was pretty awesome on his last works.. I want Revenge,Regal Ransom and General Quarters to win, show or place..

Your Canadian, wow, you have seen some beautiful land and rivers.

I hope everyone is taking this swine flu seriously, it could really become a deadly disease as it emerges...

Have A Wonderful Day

Ragsy 27 Apr 2009 10:30 AM

Opps sorry Amanda! Just saw the headlines on Bloodhorse.com. Should have gone to the home page first.

Friesan Fire, Chocolate Candy, General Quarters, Summer Bird...

My Top Four....

(Fire Will take home the Triple Crown....)

I know, I am crazy, lol...

Greg J. 27 Apr 2009 10:50 AM

Greg J.

What about Pioneer of the Nile with G Gomez.  Don't you "think" that horse is a good horse?

stardust 27 Apr 2009 12:13 PM

FRIESAN FIRE went five furlongs in :57 4/5 this morning.  WOW, that is fast.  I love him.

Mary 27 Apr 2009 12:32 PM

Greg J.  You are not crazy at all.  Those four (adding Pioneer) will probably be the superfecta.  I am putting 5 horses in my boxes.  :)  If the super hits, everything will.

stardust 27 Apr 2009 1:12 PM

FF is a possible TC winner.  We had another one that had the same two letters.  Seattle Slew SS.  :)

stardust 27 Apr 2009 1:13 PM

Stardust,

Honestly, I think there are at least ten horses that could win, BUT I am sticking to my convictions, and staying with my top four, if I had to go top seven, I would add dunkirk, I Want Revenge, POTN.......

It really is a deep field, I had Friesan Fire, The Pamplemousse since day one, I love Chocolate Candy's late speed, Same with Summer Bird, General Quarters, I have him there due to his last race.

If you really went by the numbers, and nothing else(I hate to say this), but, the top horses would be IWR, RR, POTN, FF, MM, Etc...

That isn't how I handicapp though, I involve my Gut, Latest works, Pedigree, Traner, Jockey,  Racing style, Etc...I really don't think going by the numbers gives you a "Feel" for the horse, Sounds crazy, but it is the way I pick these athletes, and I am not changing, lol....

Greg J. 27 Apr 2009 1:53 PM

Greg J.

You are right. This is a very strange Derby.  Your four are good picks.  I don't go by paper either and I agree with your picks.  Summer Bird is one that is going to surprise people I think.

I am so glad General is out!  We need no injuries.

I think that Barbaro will be talked about a lot this year at the Derby.  My Lord he is beautiful.  That statue is breathtaking.

I think that Babynor's pics will show up on the 29th too.  Just a hunch.  Maybe even the name as well.  The Jackson's are so wonderful.  I love the way they time things.  The Statue timing is perfect!

stardust 27 Apr 2009 2:57 PM

Stardust, what do you mean that the General is out???

I have been sooo busy with the swine flu that I may have to go back to work!! dang that would be bad!!!

Ragsy 27 Apr 2009 6:42 PM

Greg J.

Pretty soon, we will hit the superfecta for sure.  Sqaure Eddie is out.  I have never seen a Derby Trail with this many horses dropping out.  Loooks like Babaro's work is being done and done well!  SAFETY before racing! The owners and trainers are starting to GET IT!  :-)  Of course there were a lot that already had it.

stardust 28 Apr 2009 12:03 PM

Happy Birthday Barbaro....

Karen in TX, Lou in TX, just now catching up on the above posts. I am almost your neighbor. I am from the small town of New Boston near Texarkana, TX. I go through Dallas on my way to Austin a lot. I also grew up raising horses, quarterhorses, and learn to care for animals through horses.  I now own 5 dogs and 1 cat, all very spoiled, but no horses.  I do get to enjoy my neighbor horses though.  I agree this blog is a way to connect with people no matter where they are from.  I have enjoyed it tremendously.

Penny in Texas 29 Apr 2009 1:53 PM

Penny in TX

I live in Waxahachie just south of Dallas, not too far from I-35 going south towards Austin. Glad you have joined us. I have no pets as of now but when I keep my grandkids I keep my granddog. They also have 2 cats but they stay at home. At one time when my kids were young, we had 2 ponies, 3 cats, 2 dogs, a paraket & a turtle.  I feel like I've done my due. Maybe when I get really old I'll get a cat to keep me company. Right now I want to be free to go when I want and not have to worry about a pet.

Today is Barbaro's birthday. People have been saying he would be 6 but I think he'd be only 4. Am I wrong?

Really glad that Nicanor is back home at Fair Hill. Maybe it won't be too long before Lentenor joins him. Maybe they can be stablemates. I don't think they have ever met each other before have they? That would be nice.

Getting excited about the Derby. Can't decide which horse I like best. They are all such beautiful creatures. It will be exciting. The Oaks should also be a good race. Can't wait to see Zenyetta(I'm not sure how you spell her name) race in the race before the Oaks, I think. She is something else! Catch ya'll later.

Lou in TX 29 Apr 2009 8:25 PM

I for one am thrilled that Nicanor will be racing at Delaware! I love Delaware Park. In September of 2005 I had the opportunity to meet the great Afleet Alex at Delaware on Afleet Alex Day.

I was at Delaware when our beloved Barbaro broke down in the Preakness. I will be at Delaware for the Triple Crown races. Delaware has one of the most beautiful paddocks in the area.

I used to guard racehorses in the backstretch at the now defunct Garden State Park. There is nothing like walking the shedrow at 4am just as the horses are waiting for their breakfast. That is where my love for these magnificent beauties began.

It takes a special breed to care for racehorses and I for one am thankful for Michael Matz and Roy and Gretchen Jackson. I know they will make the best choices for Nicanor.

I pray everyone has a safe trip in the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby this weekend.

Nic, I'll be seeing you at the races! Can't wait to see you in the paddock at DP and look you in the eye! I know you will break your maiden there just like your big brother did.

Vicki in NJ 29 Apr 2009 11:37 PM

Greg J.  The only way to really make any money on this Derby day is to have a hefty purse to start with.  Just too many horses.  Too many "ifs".  I am going for it.  I am taking your four for sure on the Derby.  I am looking at Fridays card right now.  :)

stardust 30 Apr 2009 10:54 PM

No doubt, Friesan Fire has the derby.  Great trainer and pedigree.  I'm going with General Quarters to place and Pioneer to show.  Good luck everybody.  This guy has the pedigree to go the distance.  I hope it rains.
