A Visit with La Ville Rouge and Her Colt

On May 5, I was able to visit with La Ville Rouge and her new foal at Mill Ridge Farm near Lexington. Although I know fans of the Barbaro family already love this colt, I must say he is an outstanding individual in his own right. He is very curious, very strong, and very sure of himself for one so young.

The Dynaformer colt will be two months old May 10. He is a full brother to 2006 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) winner Barbaro as well as 3-year-old Nicanor and 2-year-old Lentenor. La Ville Rouge did not have a foal last year.

Headley Bell, who is the managing partner of the farm, was kind enough to answer questions about the mare and foal. La Ville Rouge has been bred back to Dynaformer and the farm will know shortly if she is in foal.

"The Jacksons would love to have a full sister to Barbaro," said Bell. "La Ville Rouge was bred on April 26, so we are now counting days. She is an incredibly classy mare who seems to spread this personality and class throughout all of her foals. She makes an incredible mother. If she wasn't who she was, you would still say, 'My, that is a very special mare.' "

Her colt had a few issues along the way, including cracked ribs and an infected umbilicus, but is doing very well now and is in good spirits.

"Both La Ville Rouge and her baby are both doing very well," said Bell. "He's very, very strong individual with a fantastic personality. He will let you know that he exists even if you ignore him."

A photo slideshow is up on the website (link below), and a video featuring La Ville Rouge and her son will be coming soon. (I ask for your patience when it comes to the video. It is Triple Crown season, which is our busiest time of year.) As you can see from the following photo, the colt is very interested in people and his surroundings. He wanted to have his meet and greet with Alex, aka "Stable Boy," who you may have seen in other Blood-Horse videos.

Enjoy! All the photos posted in this blog are courtesy of me. Our chief photographer, Anne Eberhardt, has some wonderful photos for the slideshow.

UPDATES ON NICANOR AND LENTENOR:

For those asking about Lentenor, he left Stephens Thoroughbreds a little over a week ago to join trainer Michael Matz at his base at Fair Hill. Also, on May 6 Nicanor posted his second workout since returning to Fair Hill. He breezed five furlongs in 1:02 flat. His workout was the third fastest out of eight at that distance

Awww! The first pics of the little one! He looks just like his brothers overall. What fun! Thank you!

Hil 05 May 2009 3:52 PM

Wonderful update! He is a big boy!

Also I thought it was wonderful that Mind That Bird's connections were thoughtful when draping the Derby winner's roses over the Barbaro memorial.  It shows that Barbaro is still very much in our hearts!

Jennifer, CVT 05 May 2009 3:57 PM

Darling!  What a beauty!  I love the big heart on his forehead.  I wish this baby a long and happy life.

susaninwv 05 May 2009 4:37 PM

Beautiful pics!!!  What a touching tribute to have the roses placed around Barbaros neck.  Maybe in the years to follow, another one will take the roses.  Any word on Nicanors next race??

Robin 05 May 2009 4:38 PM

Can we guesstimate when the video will be done?

Morgano the Great 05 May 2009 4:38 PM

Oh -- thank you SO much! It's my birthday today, and you may just have given me the best gift. Will...you just look at that colt! He makes my eyes sting a little. Oh. Man.

He's a lot darker than Lenny was when he was a foal, isn't he? I remember that he was like, really pale -- and somehow turned out so dark and shiny! Hmm. Well. I won't bother to try and figure out what color his baby coat will shed out as. Patience. But -- holy pants is that colt a GORGEOUS baby! Look at that star! Look at his sweet head, and look how HUGE he is! He looks like he's going to be a TANK! Man. Oh man! I cannot wait to see more of him, and thank you so much, again!

Amber 05 May 2009 4:49 PM

Looks like he's ready to run and almost as big as Nicanor already.

Bear Claw 05 May 2009 4:51 PM

He is very cute. He sure looks like his older brothers. Best of luck little one!!

Meghan 05 May 2009 5:01 PM

Amber,

I have to say, You made me crack up!!!, Your "holy pants " and "He looks like he's going to be a TANK!" was a great description of him!!, I had to add that, It has been a long day and that made me laugh, Thanks....

Greg J. 05 May 2009 5:04 PM

Amanda, you truly a blessing. Iam crying,  That colt is awesome, I cant believe its him......such a joy to see him, its so unreal to get a glimpse of him......he is so big for such a youngster,so beautiful, a gift from God...My, oh,my such a gift...I just love Barbaro ....and all of his family...My heavenly father, he looks like the eldest bro......Thank You, Mill Ridge Farm.

Vevita1 05 May 2009 5:09 PM

Thanks for the photos and update it's all greatly appreciated.

Rodney 05 May 2009 5:21 PM

well, he is just gorgeous, as we all knew he would be!  La Ville Rouge and Dynaformer can't help themselves -- they just have the most beautiful foals who grow into the most gorgeous colts ever!  Thank you, thank you Amanda, you clever thing!  You were "traveling" but didn't dare tell us where you were going.  By the way, the photos are great!  You are terrific, Amanda Duckworth, and, did I say thank you??  Now for news of Lentenor....

Marigold 05 May 2009 5:21 PM

What a beautiful baby, and he is a really big boy! Best wishes to everyone.

Shirley in KY 05 May 2009 5:22 PM

Thanks so much for the pictures and comments! He does look curious and not frightened of people/visitors. I hope he continues to be healthy and strong!

Karen in Texas 05 May 2009 5:24 PM

That is a big boy, my word. I saw the second pic a did a double take. Amber i agree with you that boy looks like he'll be a tank. I love the white too, looks like someone slapped a paint brush in the middle of his forehead. He will be a strapping boy when he grows up.

LDP 05 May 2009 5:30 PM

What a beautiful little guy. I hope you lead a happy life.

Hopefully, LaVilla ROuge will have a mare next time & the Jacksons will stop breeding her.

kathyk 05 May 2009 5:36 PM

Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!  Brought a big smile and tears!  What a big boy!!  Thank you to to Mill Ridge and Bloodhorse!

Cassidy 05 May 2009 5:39 PM

WOW!!!  Thank you so very much for presenting us with these gorgeous pictures of the new little guy, although he is hardly little.  LOL!  It looks like he is going to be a beauty and like all the others, I wish him the very best.  Again, thank you to you Amanda and to Bloodhorse for providing this blog for us.

txhorsefan 05 May 2009 5:39 PM

What a handsome colt!!!!  Barbaro would be proud of his little brother!

So have they named this big guy yet?

Prayers for a long, healthy and successful life!

nancat 05 May 2009 5:46 PM

He and Lentenor could just switch places.  He is already big enough.  Lentenor leaves Ocala, Babynor leaves for Ocala.  So, so precious...

Marigold 05 May 2009 5:47 PM

Thank you so much for making my day!Very good looking colt!

Tracy 05 May 2009 5:47 PM

Sounds like his personality... matches that beauty Rags2Riches foal.... maybe some match there??? What an absolute JOY... seeing this youngster romping the paddock....with his mom La Ville Rouge.....he's quite a looker at his tender age 2 months on 5-10-09....Barbaro ...

Ragsy 05 May 2009 5:48 PM

OMG, he is GORGEOUS !!!  And you have it right, Amber -- he's gonna' be a tank!

And let's all say it . . . if you look at Barbaro's foal picture (color and markings and overall size) and you look at this foal, are we not talking spitting image???  Whoa!

I absolutely LOVE the comments about the foal's very strong personality, demanding attention, and physical strength.  Geez Louise, if this is how he's coming out of the gate NOW, can you imagine where this "little" one's gonna' go???

I'm laying odds that Peter is already riding Lentenor.  I'll bet he's training very well.  Let's see if that's right when the updates finally break on serious Lentenor.

VERY much looking forward to Nicanor's next race.  Whether he is a Delaware Park kind of runner now, or eventually a stakes horse . . . well the racing industry needs attention and fans and commitment at all levels and at ALL tracks, right?  So are the naysayers about Nic's level of performance only advocating stakes races as legitimate horseracing business?  It needs "stars" at all levels.  And I hope he just does well and is safe wherever Nicanor runs.

Enough cannot be said about Barbaro's resting place and bronze tribute, as well as Mind That Bird's connections and act of gracious generosity toward the magnificent Barbaro.

Don't you love that MTB is only 900 pounds and came out of nowhere???

There is much to love about this industry.  And much to fear about Montana's moving forward with horse slaughter -- a state that was associated with horses and the pioneering West.

On a positive note, I just look at the exquisite, classy and ever-composed La Ville Rouge. Can you imagine her last appointment with the ill-tempered Dynaformer?  "Oh, YOU again . . ."

Many MANY thanks to all who provided this most wonderful and inspiring update on Barbaro's family.  Thank you.

Karen, PA 05 May 2009 6:15 PM

This is my first comment ever on the Tracking Barbaro's brother's blog. I must say thank you for letting us see these pictures and thank you to the jacksons for allowing us to be apart of their lives. I cried when i heard barbaro was put down. I was rooting for him and he was my derby winner! I came homefrom school and saw they news and have 2 news papers of barbaro. I can't wait for this little man to race. he looks so much like barbaro!!!! God bless the jacksons and the family! And may they get a filly this time! Good luck Nicanor, Lentenor, and as i've seen you call him on here before, babynor! Cute name! By the way what is the next name on the portrait? Morgano? And can you please update us on Lentenor and Nicanor? Thankyou!

Liv 05 May 2009 6:24 PM

He is a beautiful colt, he has such a big star lol. I hope they get a filly next time :)

katrina 05 May 2009 6:28 PM

It was worth the wait and thank you Amanda and Bloodhorse for sharing these photos of Babynor, since we still do not know which name he is going to get.  Big boy, wow and the star on his forehead like the rest of the guys. Now we will patiently wait to hear if mom is with #5.  Still say Dynaformer wants the males so we will just have to wait and see.  Again many thanks and can't wait to see the slide show.

lobieb 05 May 2009 6:37 PM

Just perfect - what else can one say!  He looks like a very large colt?!  Does La Ville Rouge look a little thin to anyone else? Thanks so much for the update and photos -they made my day a whole lot nicer!

Sally F 05 May 2009 6:42 PM

Thank you for the pics of La Ville Rouge and the baby. He is adorable, very sweet.

WOW!! He going to be a big boy, I think this one will be built more like his daddy then the other three boys. He seems inquisitive and friendly, L.V.R. really is such a great momma. Congrats to all connected with this amazing equine family. :)

Lady Ruffian 05 May 2009 7:06 PM

awww he is s cute! i can't wait to see more of him!

Ash 05 May 2009 7:09 PM

Thank you - definitely worth the wait. What a strong family resemblance! And I love the description of this kid's personality. La Ville Rouge is an amazing mom.

Lisa in Colorado 05 May 2009 7:11 PM

Thank you Amanda.

What a big colt so soon.

They say you'll have the best clue of what the final result looks like at three days, three months, and three years- in between they get the fuglies.

If he's this good looking at three months- my oh my.

However, such a wide body already, wonder if this means more of a sprinter?  More experienced thoroughbred people chime in on that thought.

HorseFirst 05 May 2009 7:17 PM

This colt here looks the best prospect out of all 3 after Barbaro, look at the shoulder and neck line on him! Boy what a good looking fella, I'll be praying for a safe and sound upbringing!!!

Amanda 05 May 2009 7:21 PM

WOW(:

He sure has a very large, muscular looking neck. Every one of these colts look so amazing.!

I can't wait to see what this one's name will be(:

megan. 05 May 2009 7:23 PM

MJ 05 May 2009 7:29 PM

Amanda, thank you so very much for the wonderful pictures!  He is just so handsome already!  It truly is wonderful watching all of these boys grow up - I look forward to all of their races.  But it would be nice to have a sweet filly in the field!  Thank you Mill Ridge and the Jacksons for continuing the legacy.  Will wait patiently for updates on all the boys and Mom too!  Maybe we'll know by Mother's Day if she's in foal.  Wouldn't that be too sweet!

Barb C 05 May 2009 7:38 PM

Beautiful boy! Thanks for following this wonderful family! Love the 3rd picture especially. Look at the neck and shoulders of this 2 month old...Wow!

Thanks again...

Anja 05 May 2009 7:47 PM

Thanks so much for these beautiful pictures and commentary!  Mama La Ville Rouge looks wonderful, and "moose-baby" is soooooo handsome...and, to me, looks most like Barbaro of all the brothers.  Love the thought of his "in your face" personality...

horsenfan4ever 05 May 2009 8:05 PM

He`s adorable!

Glassoniongirl 05 May 2009 8:19 PM

Wow that is a very nice lookingg little colt. He appears to be extremely well-balanced, with a nice croup and his withers look good as well. His neck seems to meet his shoulders well and he seems well-muscled. Should be a promising young colt. :)

Kekira 05 May 2009 8:31 PM

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you!!!

What a beautiful boy. He reminds me so much of Barbaro.  Even more than Nicanor and Lentenor.

Here's hoping the Jackson's get their wish next year...a beautiful filly.

I cannot thank you enough for sharing these photos. You have made my day...week...year. :)

PatCA 05 May 2009 8:39 PM

He is such a beaut. Ahhh! I am glad his health is getting better each day and that La Ville Rouge is alright as well. He is rather large, and if he is healthy could help him in the long run. Bigger horse= Bigger lungs? Am I right? Anyways I love all of them in different ways and I will be watching him for his whole career. :D

Lexis 05 May 2009 8:49 PM

I like the description of his strong personality.  Health and happiness to little La Ville 2009.

Grey K 05 May 2009 9:00 PM

What great photos! thank you so-o-o-o much for posting them. Amanda and Bloodhorse for posting them. He is beautiful and already carries himself like a champion!! Impossible not to be in love with this little guy!! Thanks again to everyone who works on this blog and to the folks at Mill Ridge who have so generously provided access so all of us can share in the comfort and hope of knowing that Barbaro's legacy lives on through his amazing little brothers.

Donna in PA 05 May 2009 9:28 PM

And I forgot to ask - does anyone know what the little guy's name is yet?

Donna in PA 05 May 2009 9:31 PM

Thank you for these long awaited photos. He is indeed a big beautiful boy. I particularly like his head and strong neck.  His shoulders are already muscular.  His chest seems broad, possibly denoting a big heart.  Mom's influence pervades in her boys...and DYNAFORMER should be proud. God speed this dear one and all of the family.

Otherlyn 05 May 2009 9:33 PM

Thank you for the slide show.  It is so great to see him so happy :)  Thank you for this gift of beautiful pics of my favorite horse family.

They are great people to put up with all of us FOB's. We can get a little crazy sometimes. But it's because we love this family of Barbaro's soooo much. Yea we have pictures!!!

Barbara 05 May 2009 11:19 PM

Whoa! That is ONE BIG COLT! He is gorgeous! Thank you La Ville Rouge, for giving us this incredible foal! He looks like one who will give us pause in the racing world! God Bless, all the connections of Barbaro, and Amanda, thank you soooo much!

horsenut23 05 May 2009 11:19 PM

La Ville Rouge has such beautiful babies. And this baby is no exception. Thank you Amanda for sharing this May 5th moment in time with us. The Jacksons and Mill Ridge are ever so kind to allow you to share with us these moments. Thank you so much one and all.

I do have a question though. I note some lighter areas on the baby's front feet. Is this just shadows or does the baby have some additional white on his legs?

Kathy 06 May 2009 12:02 AM

What terrific photos!  Seeing such a good looking colt was worth the wait.  Even in pictures, it is obvious that there is something special about this boy.  As always, thank you very much.

MLS 06 May 2009 12:20 AM

You're the one Amanda! You're the one.

Pictures are just great and I can't believe how huge he is!!!!

Look at that neck! This my friends is a runner. You may not like "The Coach" as a person or trainer but listen up, he knows horse flesh and has always said "first, look at the lenght of the neck. You can have the strongest leggs, the perfect balance, engine, etc but if you can't suck air, you're not going anywhere".

Look at this little guy. What a beauty. May he live long, run fast and be a contented horse. It's a given, he will always be loved.

Specal shout out to Headley Bell and his staff for their generosity, time and effort bringing us up todate on The Family. Lastly, the Jacksons. Mr and Mrs Jackson are wonderful people and deserve all the good that can come their way. Without them, where would all of this love be? Roy and Gretchen, you rock!

Dona 06 May 2009 12:33 AM

Another beautiful horse.  All of Barbaro's brothers are special to me and so many of us.  We loved him so much.

Congratulations to the Jacksons1

Smile down on your little brother, Barbaro!

Ruth 06 May 2009 2:23 AM

3 great looking brothers,Barbaro has. I'm hoping one or more of them can win the Preakness and Belmont for Barbaro.

Don 06 May 2009 2:29 AM

Great shoulder, great head, well

balanced and looks intelligent. Hope he turns out to be a runner. Will follow his progress.A very beautiful foal.

Max E 06 May 2009 2:29 AM

Thanks so much for posting pics of babynor. Beautiful, beautiful colt.

airwave 06 May 2009 3:03 AM

A beautiful boy! And BIG!!  These pics were definitely worth the wait! Thank you, thank you, thank you.  It is a privilege to be able to see into the lives of the brothers of our Barbaro.  I was full of memories watching the KD this past weekend, both happy and sad.  Happy at remembering how Barbaro won the 2006 KD in a race that was...to quote the announcer, "All Barbaro, in a sublime performance!  Sad when I think of what happened 2 weeks later. Each Derby brings back bittersweet memories of our boy.  I find it difficult to watch the Preakness now.

Baby, live a long and healthy life!  Show the nay-sayers that lightening can strike twice and follow in the footsteps of your big brother, only do it with safety.  Fulfill the dreams that we all have.  Triple Crown 2012!

Thanks to everyone involved with sharing these beautiful boys with us.  It is greatly appreciated.

nannie284 06 May 2009 4:33 AM

OOOOOOH, what a way to start the morning! My upper for today! this precious little one, Babynor, born on my birthday! May you grow in spirit, good health, and make lots of horsey friends! Amanda, thank you again, sincerely, for all your time and dedication.

sandieh 06 May 2009 6:49 AM

Many of you make a valid point. He is huge for his age. I do wish him and his wonderful family all the best in good health and racing success. It warms me to know that so many people hold Barbaro and his family so close to their hearts. God Bless.

BarbarosDerby132 06 May 2009 7:02 AM

My goodness does he look like Barbaro the second and third picture to me he looks like a Older Barbaro there.  He looks big Mind that bird connections               MIND THAT BIRD CONNECTIONS YOU ALL HAVE A HEART OF GOLD I DON'T KNOW OF ANYOTHER TRAINERS OR OWNERS THAT WOULD HAVE DONE WHAT YOU DID REMEMBERING BARBARO THE WAY YOU DID.  MIND THAT BIRD WHEN HE PASSED PIONEER OF THE NILE ON THE FINALE TURN I GOT A GLIMPSE OF BARBARO FOR A COUPLE MINUTES A LITTLE SMALLER BUT WHEN YOU HAVE A SPIRIT OF BARBARO IN YOU YOU CAN DO ANYTHING.  GOOD LUCK IN THE PREAKNESS.

Jackie(Fan of Nicanor) 06 May 2009 7:13 AM

What a nice surprise to see the pictures of LVR and her new foal.  He looks like he is thriving and enjoying the new world.  LVR certainly has beautiful babies.  God's blessings on them both.

HaleyB 06 May 2009 7:26 AM

Thanks so much for the pictures, he is big.

Debbie 06 May 2009 8:26 AM

Thank you for the pictures and the beginning story of his life.  There is an essence about him even at this young age that resembles Barbaro.  May the racing Gods be kind to him.

Nancy 06 May 2009 8:29 AM

All - The baby has not been named yet. It is not unusual for Thoroughbreds to go unnamed until they are 2-years-old. However, in the past the Jacksons have named Barbaro's brothers by the time they are yearlings, so it just depends on the owners.

aduckworth 06 May 2009 8:50 AM

Normally, I don't comment much on Barbaro's brothers however I must say that I am extremely impressed with this colt.  Looks like he has substantial bone and substance; well balanced front and behind; neck comes nicely out of the shoulders; friendly and curious which is a good trait for a foal.  This is a good early indicator of trainability and a willingness to learn.  It's still too early to tell but I think we've got a winner here!

hrseldy 06 May 2009 9:13 AM

I just looked at the slide show again and man he is one big baby boy and he looks so much like Barbaro.  He runs just like Barbaro as well, with his front legs high off the ground.

He is going be something to follow.  The Jacksons must be so pleased.

Thanks again for the photos.

Marilyn 06 May 2009 9:13 AM

He is beautiful...thanks for sharing him. His family is wonderful, too

La Ville Rouge and Dynaformer have made a great family for us all to be interested in.I think its going to b a whole story once all the kids grow up race etc.Barbaro started it and they will all have their own roles in the story ending with Dynafilly winning the derby(my wish).

Tracy 06 May 2009 10:02 AM

He does like like a "tank". Maybe more from the mare's side than the sire's.

Wanda 06 May 2009 10:09 AM

He seems so big! Thank you for posting the pictures!!

SQ 06 May 2009 10:09 AM

OMG I cannot take so much cute all at once. Those "action" shots of Babynor are just too much. He looks like he's already looking for a race track. He's beautifully formed, looks incredibly strong for a little guy and is obviously quite intelligent. Of course, I'm not biased as all.

Ida Lee 06 May 2009 10:15 AM

La Ville Rouge has certainly proven herself. She is a beautiful producer and looks like a wonderful Mom. Thanks so much for the pictures and the update. I check everyday to see if there is any news and any of the brothers. God bless them all.

Berner05 06 May 2009 10:33 AM

He is sooo adorable. What a cutie and the trade mark star on the forehead. All the pictures are just wonderfull. Thanks so much. When will they name him?

DONNA 06 May 2009 10:33 AM

golly he's HUGE!! i've spent the last few weeks looking for some pictures, thanks a lot!

(i totally can not wait for when he's racing! he looks totally like his sire!!)

Windspurr 06 May 2009 10:48 AM

looks like a big little guy

horsefan 06 May 2009 10:59 AM

OMG that little big guy really looks like he is ready to run.  Love the slideshow and of course the pics.  Amanda.. You are such an Angel.  Can't get over the heart on his forhead.  That is identicle to Barbaro.  OMG.  he is so cute.  WOW!

crazy stardust 06 May 2009 11:00 AM

The slide show is wonderful. What a beautiful colt.

Lisa in Colorado 06 May 2009 11:56 AM

You know, looking at that terrific slide show (comments are great!!), you can't help but be rather in awe of how big "Babynor" is.

I mean, what's up with those shoulder muscles, and what a strong long neck.  At 2 months, do they normally get this big and tall so quickly? The muscles!! And his legs are fuller and strong looking.

He is already clearly an amazing presence.

What do the wonderful Jacksons think about their newest addition?  Any feedback Amanda?

Thanks for all the efforts, AD, AE, "Stable Boy," and Bloodhorse -- and of course, the excellent Headley Bell...

Karen, PA 06 May 2009 12:08 PM

Please forgive my ignorance....I did not know BabyNor had been in ill health ("cracked ribs and an infected umbilicus").  How were his ribs fractured?

Also thought "Barbara" would be a fitting name for the longed-for filly.  Here's to a filly in 2010!

In recent decades and of all the fabulous racehorses to grace a racetrack, my three favorites of all time are Secretariat, Smarty Jones, and Barbaro.  However, I love all horses, and think they (and the dog) are God's special gifts to Man.

Please let me know about the baby's fractured ribs.  He's seems to be fine now and is, of course, very beautiful (as would be expected).

MeAgain 06 May 2009 12:13 PM
aduckworth 06 May 2009 12:15 PM

Than you so much for the beautiful pictures of La Ville and baby.  He is beautiful and so big!! He looks like he's 6 mos. old!! La Ville and Dynaformer have the formula for handsome colts.

Chris 06 May 2009 12:18 PM

MeAgain,

He was 142 pounds at birth, Which is very big for a new foal.  He cracked the ribs probably while LVR was giving birth to him.  It is quite normal, Nothing to be alarmed about, It happens quite frequently.....

Greg J. 06 May 2009 12:23 PM

Windspurr: No disrespect but I see no resemblance to his sire. What do you see? Dynaformer is not a pretty horse yet he throws some very nice looking ones. IMO this colt looks more like the Carson City side of his pedigree.

Wanda 06 May 2009 12:24 PM

Amanda

These pictures are really really good.  Did you take some of these?  I wish we had someone over here that knew how to take good pictures.  They always turn out really fuzzy and not very clear from what I have seen.  Anyway. Good job on all of it.

stardust 06 May 2009 12:28 PM

Stardust - The ones in the blog are mine, the ones in the slideshow are Anne's.

aduckworth 06 May 2009 12:42 PM

What a handsome, huge foal!  I have been waiting patiently for these baby pictures.  I don't have a horse, but I loved and followed Barbaro. Now I have these guys to fill his void.  I also love La Ville Rouge and Dynaformer.  I am hoping for a filly to follow from the April 26 encounter.  My daughter was born on April 26, 1984, and she certainly is a successful, beautiful, and wonderful creature.  So maybe it will be a lucky day for La Ville too. Thank you so much for letting me be a small part of this wonderful thoroughbred family.

CLee 06 May 2009 12:43 PM

How lovely they both are. Thank you for the update and wonderful photos. The colt is perfect and so is his Mom...

MintHillFarm 06 May 2009 12:59 PM

Well Amanda they are just beautiful.  We need a good picture taker like you on the west coast. :)

stardust 06 May 2009 1:04 PM

Amanda, the slide show is wonderful! He looks even bigger standing next to a human, bigger than a pony already, lol!

Thank you again Amanda!

horsenut23 06 May 2009 1:25 PM

I haven't seen photos of Barbaro as a foal, so I'm not comparing the 2009 colt to anyone. He's a stunner. Nicely balanced. Lovely shoulder. If looks can make a racehorse, this colt would be something truly special.

Hopefully the next foal is the long-awaited filly.

For Big Red 06 May 2009 1:40 PM

Oops, didn't see the slide show. Yes, I guess they are lighter than the rest of him. (Have I said recently that I work nights and therefore I am sleepy all of the time?)

All images of the baby are super fantastic. Thank you Amanda and Anne.

Kathy 06 May 2009 1:43 PM

Wow this colt is going to be HUGE HUGE HUGE!! I can feel he will have some serious talent.. looks so much like barbaro! Cant wait till they name him! And I cant wait for Nicanor to race again, I think he'll do it this time around.

Also glad to hear about Lentenor finally with Matz, im so excited for his debut!!! And for Mine That Bird's connections to have draped the roses over Barbaro's neck... that really touched my heart and almost brought tears to my eyes.. That was so sweet and im sure made Barbaro as well as all Barbaro's connections so proud! Were so lucky to have such amazing people working with La Ville Rouge and amazing people at Bloodhorse to take the time to update us all! YOU GUYS ARE ALL AMAZING!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

Rachel of AZ 06 May 2009 1:53 PM

For Big Red

In the book that I just got, there is a picture of Barbaro when he was little.  I think they look a lot alike. Anyone else see that pic that has the book?  Also Big Red, thanks for being patient and considerate with me in your posts. :)

stardust 06 May 2009 2:05 PM

Amanda.  Off topic.   Is there anything for sale on Barbaro or any of this family that the money will go to the Barbaro fund?

stardust 06 May 2009 2:12 PM

He's going to be a stakes horse for sure. I'm so sure Nicanor will win his next race I'm betting 5 g's on him! He's a lock matz has him almost ready. Here's everybody's chance to cash  in big.Don't pass on betting a lot on Nicanor to win!!!

The Phantom 06 May 2009 2:58 PM

He is gorgeous!!! He reminds me so much of Barbaro and Nicanor and my filly I raised, so curious of people! It looks like he loves to run!

anniedixie65 06 May 2009 2:58 PM

Amanda,

I have tried everything to try to find a picture of Barbaro as a foal, NO LUCK, Are you aware of any of him as a foal???, I have Nicanor, Lentenor, And now the new little guy, But no Barbaro...

Ran across this about Barbaro when he was a foal, though, Thought Everyone would find it interesting:

When Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro came into the world on the night of April 29, 2003, he needed a little bit of help. Bill Sanborn foaled the colt, who is by Dynaformer, at Sanborn Chase farm near Nicholasville, Ky., and remembers vividly that his first impression had nothing to do with Derby roses.

"He was just a large colt," Sanborn said.   Barbaro's size was a little surprising. His dam, La Ville Rouge, wasn't all that big herself, and the combination of a big foal and a smallish-to-average-size mare meant that Sanborn and Irvin White, the night watchman and a key assistant at Sanborn Chase, had to roll up their sleeves, each grab a foreleg, and gradually pull the foal out of his dam.

"But other than having to pull out the foal from La Ville, that was it," Sanborn added. "We pulled the foaling chart after he won the Derby. It said, 'Difficult foaling, foal had to be assisted.' And after that it said, 'Mare and foal doing fine.' "

Greg J. 06 May 2009 3:36 PM

FYI,

The baby foal's BIG brother worked today:

Nicanor

Your Comment: BARBAROS BROTHER

So, If he came out of it OK, Then Tuesday, May 12, Still could be in the cards for his next race....

Greg J. 06 May 2009 3:51 PM

Thank you so much for the slide show. I think I've worn out my mouse looking at the pictures. :)

Of course now Amanda will need to update the the caricatures in the upper right hand corner of this blog. Babynor needs his own likeness. :):):)

PatCA 06 May 2009 4:21 PM

Hey Phantom , are you hallucinating or what? He has a good chance to win but 5 grand on a maiden to win surely this must be a joke. So far Matz hasn't been able to get him in the winners circle what makes you so positive all of a sudden?

Nice looking  big colt.

2 time valley player of the year 06 May 2009 4:53 PM

beautiful photos of both mom and baby. i must say that La Ville Rouge is a stunning mare, gorgeous. i can't wait to see future updates :]

Manda 06 May 2009 4:57 PM

WHAT A GORGEOUS BABY. LA VILLE IS A BEAUTIFUL MARE TOO. I WISH HIM ALL THE BEST AS HE CONTINUES TO GROW AND DEVELOP. I CERTAINLY HOPE THE JACKSONS GET A FILLY TOO! OF COURSE, WISHING NIC AND LENTENOR ALL THE BEST TOO. CAN'T WAIT UNTIL NIC'S NEXT RACE.

CHRIS B 06 May 2009 5:22 PM

I have that book with barbaro's pic in it! I must say he was very handsome colt. What happened to his paddock buddy? I forgot his name sorry.

Liv 06 May 2009 5:42 PM

Thank you so much for the beautiful pictures of Barbaro's newest baby brother.  He is so handsome, and big!  I know he is almost two months old, but he sure seems large for his age.

We all thank you, and so appreciate his pictures.

Gloria Davis

Gloria Davis 06 May 2009 6:14 PM

After watching the Derby Saturday I wondered how Nicanor would have done. He ran better races than Mine That Bird and had better speed figures. Nicanor seems to run for second, only going fast as he wants to, and he probably would have done have done well. I wonder if he'd do well in the Preakness?

The Derby proved that former champions and underdogs can race well. Perhaps Mine that Bird can win, or maybe someone could convince Matz to add Nicanor.

Anyone who dismisses the possibility of a win by Nicanor would only need to look at Sir Barton, who was Billy Kelly's stablemate, and won the Triple Crown in 1919. So, don't dismiss either Nicanor or Mine That Bird.

Nicanor is training well, and should win his next start. Then, let's see him in the Travers.

jon 06 May 2009 6:17 PM

The slide show is AWESOME!!! Thank you for putting these pics out there so we can admire LVR and Babynor.

Kath from SC 06 May 2009 6:55 PM

Why does he have a shaved spot on his throat?  Is he ok or are there concerns about something?  Just curious.

wendyg 06 May 2009 7:38 PM

Greg J.

I have a picture of Barbaro as a foal in my book and he is identical to this little big guy other than the nose.  Same heart on the forehead, same build, same strong legs, same same same.  Anyone that has this book can look at it.  :)

stardust 06 May 2009 7:48 PM

Is it just me, or is this the best looking colt of the LVR bunch?  His size, muscle mass, and overall physique almost remind me of a very-well built quarter horse.  He just appears so sturdy and has a real presence in the photos.  I like him a LOT!!!

Breezin' 06 May 2009 9:13 PM

Love the slide show.  Bloodhorse and Mill Ridge have outdone themsleves.

So excited about Lentenor.  I need to put him in my virtual stable.  I remember Nicanor had his first work at 3 weeks so Lentenor's could be in the next 1-2 weeks.

MJ 06 May 2009 9:30 PM

The book, "Barbaro America's Horse" by Shelley Mickle contains a picture of Barbaro at 6 weeks.  You would swear it was the same horse as the foal above.

MJ 06 May 2009 9:32 PM

So glad to hear that Lentenor is at fair Hill. Does any one know when he arrived? Hope he and Nicanor get to know one another. Do you suppose they will think they are looking in a mirror when and if they ever see each other?

Greg J please keep us posted on Nicanor. I can't find anything out at the Fair Hill web site. Where are you getting your info?

I just love Babynor...wish I could give him a big hug. Glad he likes people but how could he not with all the love and attention he's getting. He just doesn't know how much he is really loved by all of us. But neither does LVR, Nicanor or Lentenor. Our hearts are with them all. Barbaro knew we all loved him and still do.

If LVR is in foal, better start another notebook for my Granddaughter, Claire. I emailed her the pictures of Babynor but haven't heard from her yet. She will be sooo excited to see him.

Stay healthy and happy all you Barbaro brothers!!!!

Lou in TX 06 May 2009 9:58 PM

Thank you so much!!

this lil' boy is defiantly someone special. and the heart-star on his forehead is very similar to barbaro's, like you all said before. i can not wait for his time to shine, and lentenor's!!

Good luck Nicanor, and congrates to La Ville!

Windspurred 06 May 2009 10:05 PM

Phantom, who are you kidding!??  Just another way of making fun of us.

Nicanor will win when it is his time to win.  Babynor will become whatever he's meant to become.  I want to remark that La Ville Rouge is very beautiful and so sweet.  I LOVE that mare!  SHE is the reason we have all these beautiful colts to love.

Amanda, you may have missed your calling.  More photos from you, please. You have a really good eye.

Marigold 06 May 2009 10:05 PM

THE BABIES ARE ALL SO BEAUTIFUL.  IT DOESN'T MATTER TO ME IF THEY RUN OR NOT, WITH THEIR BLOOD LINE THEY DON'T HAVE TOO...I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO THE BABY GIRL...SHE'LL BE A KNOCK OUT TOO...GOOD LUCK LITTLE ONES.

THE FARMER'S 06 May 2009 10:06 PM

Hey all

Could we PLEASE keep this site as a happy and loving one. We have waited sooo long for these pictures could we just PLEASE enjoy them and stop all the bickering!!!  Stop all the Derby talk about betting and lets get on down the road. Talk about the Barbaro brothers is sooo much more interesting.  Amanda will have to control our comments a lot closer if this bickering doesn't stop.

Now I've said my 2 cents worth on that subject. I'm probably not the only one who doesn't enjoy it.

Is Magarno(?)the next name on the picture? Like Amanda said the Jackson's usually name the colts before they are yearlings. Hopefully they will stay true with this baby. Thank you Jackson's for letting us in on your Barbaro family as it is growing. I hope you get your filly soon. Maybe this next time.

Hopefully the video will be out soon and we can see this big fellow running and kicking and just enjoying life.

Greg J thanks for the info on Nicanor. Sounds like he just might race on the 12th. We'll see.

Hope you all have a great day.

Lou in TX 07 May 2009 1:54 AM

slide #17 is that classic shot of BARBARO running in the DERBY with all 4 feet off of the ground. Just like his statue at the gates of Churchill Downs. I see in littlnor or babynor, whatever his name will be? His hindquarters aren't quite full yet but have that structure of space to build them up. His shoulder's are grande! Just look at the strength in them already! Where the top of the legs in front meet his shoulder is very strong! his legs are long, a bit lighter than brother Barbaro, but he is going to be dark red, beautiful neck and head. His head is PERFECT. I use to think to myself when looking at Barbaro...my GOSH what perfect conformation, I couldn't find one flaw in his build, ANYWHERE. I don't say that rarely, and babynor's tail and mane will be as majestic and Barbaro's was. Michael Matz kept Barbaro's tail in beautiful "English" condition, the bob on the end, length, thick, I would have loved to see him in English tack and big snaffle/braided reins, braided mane and tail, what an incredible hunter/jumper prospect that beautiful boy of ours would have been. And so easy going/tempered, with the speed for open jumping, I can just see him fighting a little for the bit between fences, but eventually giving up to face the fence, and then his little crow-hop afterwards. Sorry, I lose myself in him everytime i think of him.

This little guy seems so much like him...look at those knocking knees!!!! Evelyn

evelynmarr 07 May 2009 2:03 AM

Hey All

I owe you an apology...it was on another Barbaro site where all the bickering was going on. Sorry about that. I read so many sites about this family I get them confused.

Keep all the love coming!!!

Lou in TX 07 May 2009 2:04 AM

He is just Dapper isnt he? How about, Dappernor, Dapper Dannor, lol

evelynmarr 07 May 2009 2:09 AM

Greg J:

Barbaro "America's Horse" has a picture of Barbaro at 6 weeks old. Its such a cute picture...

Ragsy 07 May 2009 10:38 AM

Phantom, stop being so sarcastic. Can't you ever say anything nice about Barbaro's brothers? We on this blog love all of them no matter how they do in the racing world win or loose. Why don't you take the chip on your shoulder elsewhere?

DONNA 07 May 2009 11:49 AM

Wow, that first picture on the slide show looks like he's half grown. We loved you before you were born, Babynor, and now will watch you mature as a beautiful young horse. May God Bless you and your family with good health, tons of love and horsey hugs!

sandieh 07 May 2009 2:06 PM

The "Boys" are back in town !!!  Fair Hill - town, that is !

Does that not rock?  What fun.  Cannot WAIT to see pics of Lentenor now and see what he does on the track.  Wonder how a spirited rung with Nicanor would result in !

We have some fun ahead, FOB's.

And my oh my I just cannot get over this "Babynor", if we can even call this little muscle man "baby."  How cool is he already???

Karen, PA 07 May 2009 4:06 PM

Nicanor will win his next race and 'I will bet him' any of you true fans should to. Greg j as for your olive branch ,in the future-Think before attacking someone you don't agree with or like what they say."You started the personal attack" I'll finish it.M Gold if you have no confidence in the horse say so but be smart bet him next out this is a golden opportunity and no I'm not hallucinating valley.

The Phantom 07 May 2009 4:45 PM

Someone commented on the shaved spot on the colt's neck -- we are familiar with that on Barbaro's neck -- IV insertion.  Remember, the colt had an operation on his umbilicus to remove the infection.

Also interesting to note, I think it was you, Evelyn, who was evoking a beautiful picture of Barbaro decked out in English (by the way, Barbaro's tail and mane were totally glam and elegant -- Matz has an amazing level of expectation for their grooming;  look at how exquisite Nicanor is kept!!).

Anyway, this brought to mind a sports website's evaluation of the measurment of winning thoroughbred's "STRIDE ANGLE" -- defined as follows: The stride angle is the maximum opening between the front and rear legs, usually occurring at push off from the rear foot.

Secretariat's was 110 degrees;  Barbaro's was 105 degrees; Affirmed at 93, Forego at 90, Man o'War at 88.  Our boy is second only to Secretariat, a reason it is felt for his speed (not his 3X heart size).

Interesting information -- only makes me wonder even moreso what Barbaro could have achieved on the track.  But it's ok -- his legacy is even bigger, and that is what was supposed to be.

Wonder what the stride angle is for Nicanor and of course Lentenor and the new larger-than-life baby when he grows up to be . . . even larger !!!

Are you on drugs????  What you saw in the Derby was an INCREDIBLE performance.  You will be lucky if you ever see such a great race again in your lifetime.

One big difference between Nicanor and Mine That Bird, Jon, is that MTB actually has won a race or two.  Graded stakes races, too, not just Maiden Special Weight races.  And that was before he ran his Derby.

Please, have some respect for an great little racehorse.  He didn't get to be Canada's Champion Two-Year Old Colt for no reason.

JAJ 07 May 2009 5:04 PM

hey, i know this is completely random, but today (may 7th) is the anniversary of seattle slew's death. Rip seattle, a great racehorse. p.s.the new foal is really adorable, and la ville is beautiful as always! Good luck to them both xx

He's a beauty!!

Susan 08 May 2009 11:06 AM

Hi -

I know this is OT for this blog, but BH has posted a video of Curlin's new full brother.  The video shows a paint mare in the paddock with him at a week's age and either his dam isn't there or she's completely off camera.  I tried to watch a second time but can't get back on.  Anybody know whether he's on a nurse mare?

s lee 08 May 2009 12:31 PM

WendyG, the patch on Babynor's neck is probably from where he was feed antibiotics through an IV. I am so glad to see him recovering and running free with his mother. By the way, happy Mothers Day, Laville Rouge, thank you for the beautiful babies!

sandieh 08 May 2009 12:32 PM

Laville Rouge, you can visit my house for Mothers Day, and please bring the kids! Horsey Hugs!

sandieh 08 May 2009 12:38 PM

Thank you for these photos on the new brother!  The captions made me laugh :)

Who knows?, Barbaro's brother takes on Curlin's brother in the 2112 Kentucky Derby???, One can always dream....

What a precious little boy.

Hey, I got to me Jason on Oaks Day. He is so cool and really nice to have chatted with me.

RhondaH 08 May 2009 10:21 PM

DONNA

NO to your above question LOL.  Nice is not in the vocab.  :)

stardust 09 May 2009 9:59 AM

Wanda,

I completely agree outside of the thick neck and shorter face from a profile, all of these colts resemble Carson City.  Been saying it since Barbaro.  Not only looks, but Barbaro's vertical rear leg action was a Carson City throwback also.  In my opinion, Lentenor, who is the best looking of them all so resembles Pollard's Vision.

Brettzky99 09 May 2009 11:31 AM

shaved spot: If someone hasn't answere already it's from where they inserted an IV for antibiotics etc. He did have an infected umbilicus and some cracked ribs.

WHEW!! If I were LVR I'd have a cracked pelvis, he is one whopping colt. Can't wait to see how he grows into himself.

Tincture of Time, oats, hay and water.

oldgraymare 09 May 2009 2:54 PM

Wendyg,

The shaved spot on his throat is where they would have inserted the IV for his recent surgery (on his "belly button"). He looks great now - almost as big as LVR! Can't wait to see the video! Here is a video of Curlin's full brother - this little guy is a rocket!

nice to see a healthy foal. he's a cutie. glad his brothers are also doing well. wish the best for all of them.

christy tate 09 May 2009 5:58 PM

Question for Amanda:

Just saw the video of Curlin's full brother.  Where is his mother????

JAJ 10 May 2009 7:58 AM

I don't think there will be any waiting for this adorable guy to mature-he looks half grown already. Way to go LVR and Dynaformer-all of your boys are gorgeous and thanks to all for sharing them with us.

Bonnie3 10 May 2009 7:06 PM

He is such an adorable colt. Wish I could have touched is nose! He is really curious and seems really happy. They finally admitted that he was spoiled and you can certainly see that by the way he reacts to people. So glad he's happy and healthy now. Curlin's colt is cute but he was only a week old when the video was made so he looks a lot smaller than our baby colt. We need an update on him later so we can compare. Our boy looks half grown at 2 months. He's going to be a big boy!! Thanks to Amanda (Bloodhorse), Mill Ridge Farm. Mr. Bell and the Jackson's for allowing us this very special priviledge of being in the Barbaro Family. We love all our boys and want them to be happy and healthy.

Greg J, keep us posted on Nicanor and his racing on the 12th. Hope he gets to meet Lentenor and become friends and stablemates. That way when we get an update on Nicanor, Lentenor will be handy to check on also.

Catch ya'll later.

Lou in TX 10 May 2009 8:57 PM

Hey all

Nicanor is running at Delaware Park on Wed. the 13th, 6th race on turf for 1 & 1 16th mile. Time is 3:30. Not sure if that's EST or not. Will have to check.

Maybe the 13th will be his lucky day. Go Nicanor!!!! We wish you a safe trip. You've got a lot of people rooting for you.

I probably won't get to see it but hopefully Bloodhorse will have a video. Please, please Amanda.

Hmmm...Nicanor and Lentenor are beautiful colts, but I have a feeling this new little guy will be the special one of the brothers!  He IS huge and the more I look at him body wise, the more I'm reminded of the eldest brother...that side view of him is SHOCKINGLY eerie!  Pull a picture of Babaro's side view next to the 3rd picture from the top...WOW!

Once again YOURE right JAJ: Best Damn Kentucky Derby I have seen in many moons.  Just too bad the horses had to run in slop...

personal opinion here :

I think horses should never run in slop too many injured horses...postpone the KD if track is sloppy......or any other race, build them a dome to protect them thats even better...

Ragsy 12 May 2009 11:26 AM

Ragsy,

I have to disagree--if the racing surface is safe enough to run any races, it is safe enough to run the Kentucky Derby.

The owners have the right to scratch their horses if they don't want to run on the surface.

There is a lot of exciting research currently being done on the interaction of the surface and the horse.

Happy Mother's Day LaVille Rouge.  Youe do have some beautiful babies. Thank you for the great pictures. May this little one grow up to be strong and the one to finally win the Triple Crown. Much to to all of the connections.

Ragsy, the track condition for the Derby did not cause any injury. The flailing of 4 hooves/each x 19 horses + 1 bumper-car start is what caused most of the injuries sustained in the Derby. I haven't seen any indication that there were any caused by track conditions. As JAJ says, the owners/trainers have the ability to make the determination of whether to start their horses on a sloppy/muddy/wet track or not, just as they have the right to scratch if their turf race is taken off the grass and onto the main track.

Wow!  This kid is built like a truck!!!  Wonderful.  Dam and Sire seem to be a perfect match. I too, pray for a filly next time. Firmly believe what I was taught many years ago by an old wise horseman.  Despite the hooplah over the sire, 80% of a foal's success is due to its dam. Not only in its genes but also the "mothering/discipline"

of its dam for the first few months of its life.

Watching the video of La Ville Rouge and her new son it is clear when she "draws a line" ("You've gone too far kid! You do not run me over!") and then calmly goes on  grazing, with an ear and eye cocked in his direction to be certain he learned that lesson.

Prayers for a tough filly next March!

It is so great to see Barbaro's legacy continue on with his brothers.  Thank you for the greatest slide show. Hope for a Sisternor for these boys! You go Nicanor,Letenor and Babynor! It's in the blood!

Rose of Sharon 16 May 2009 12:43 PM

I read in one of the articles about Nicanor's win, that we were the FON's. How about that. Friends of Nicanor!!! We ought to start calling ourselves that so we can support him and not keep calling him Barbaro's brother. He is his own horse so we ought to treat him as such. Nothing against Barbaro because I love him dearly and cry everytime things are written about him but I think it should be Nicanors's time now. He is here in the now and present. What are your feelings about this? Greg J, Stardust and all. Give me some feedback. We can also be FOL's and Friends of Babynor. Hopefully we'll get a name soon. From the picture of the hounds, Sereno is the next hound, then Margarno. Nicanor is on the right side if you have the picture. Barbaro is on the right side of Nicanor (separate picture). Anyway I thought it was kid-of neat someone calling us the FON's. Let me hear friends... WOW! What a Preakness win for the (girls) FILLY!! Also like Mind That Bird, he's for real.

Concerned Fan and JAJ:

Thanks,I really thought the track was guilty of injuring horses....

I have a feeling this is the reincarnation of our King Barbaro. He has beautiful conformation, thick shoulders/withers, long legged knobby kneed, a beautiful big head. And something about this colt I have noticed? His mane and tail are so similar to Barbaro's. Michael Matz is going to be happy to see that this boy's tail will grow out to be as long, as full, and just as beautifully cropped straight across at the bottom that will flow behind him and into other horses faces as they try but fail to catch a ride in this ones force of wind.

Another thing I have noticed is that, in the later video of him running the paddock he and his Mother are in, he tries to eat up as much ground, circumference of the paddock as he can, and his stride at a few weeks is already a great length and when he runs, he runs steady and sure, with perfect lines across his back. He will be a joy to ride. His head is big and long like his eldest brother, and if he doesn't soon stop charging up to his Mamma, rearing up to playfully nip her lip, she is gonna be putting him in his place very soon, which can sometimes hurt their feelings a bit, but he will shake it off, learn from it, and try to challenge her in other ways next time, like to a bit of running around the fence line as fast as he can get her to go... she wont do that long either, for a broodmare at her age and with how many foals she has had, she is in beautiful and healthy shape. Sexy in horse terms, quite. But even though she is trim and hasn't got that brood mare pooch or pouch or, just bulge then, ok? I bet she IS in foal again, and will keep this little guy in his place and keep her head down in that lush green grass as she does what a Mother knows best, nourishes the baby inside AND outside of her as she continues on in her cycle of breeding, carrying, foaling, weening and breeding again. Quite the classy and gorgeous lady the Ville. She needs to be presented a Queen's award for her accomplishment's and class act she is......
