La Ville Rouge Passes 30-Day Pregnancy Test

La Ville Rouge, the dam of Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro, has been tested in foal to Dynaformer at the critical 30-day juncture of her pregnancy.

Headley Bell, managing partner at Mill Ridge Farm, where the mare is boarded, said it is too early to tell the sex of the foal that the mare is carrying. He said the sex would be determined at the 60-day pregnancy exam.“This was important,” Bell said of the mare being confirmed in foal at the 30-day stage.La Ville Rouge was bred to Dynaformer April 26 and is carrying a full sibling to Barbaro and his full brothers Nicanor and Lentenor. The mare also produced a Dynaformer colt March 10.

YAY!!  I look forward to hearing what the foal will be.  Boy or girl, I'm sure it'll be just as beautiful as it's big brothers.

Heather 30 May 2009 8:36 AM

Thanks Ron.

This is fantastic news. And because the Jackson's want a filly, we must believe that La Ville Rouge is destined to have a baby girl. However, when it is all said and done, another healthy colt would be fantastic also.

Kathy 30 May 2009 8:38 AM

Even in families Brothers are different so it is very difficult to have an other barbaro just a hope

omer 30 May 2009 8:46 AM

is it critcal  as far a breeding back if the test were negative.would love a filly. hope this is not an  inappropriate question. Semen was not collected on barbaro prior to his death why not. Hope this does not offend any one it is not meant to be offensive i was just  wondering.

mary glynn 30 May 2009 9:02 AM

Oh, Wow.  This is great news confirming La Ville Rouge's pregnancy.  I look forward to learning the sex of the latest full sibling to Barbaro when it is known.  Thank you so very much,  Ron, for this wonderful news and please extend my thanks to Headley Bell for taking the time to keep us all informed and most especially to the Jacksons for their generosity in continuing to share Barbaro's family with us.

Gloria R 30 May 2009 9:12 AM

Lets hope its a girl....to La Ville Rouge many hearts and flowers....

Ragsy 30 May 2009 9:30 AM

Oh thats awesome! Be a filly!!! Be a filly!!

kkay3702 30 May 2009 9:37 AM

Congrats to the Jacksons.

Think Pink!

MJ 30 May 2009 9:46 AM

Yes!!! Think Pink!!!

Berner05 30 May 2009 10:03 AM

Most all FOB's, along with the Jackson's, are hopeful for a healthy Filly. Dynaformer has bred over 70 Mares this year @ age 24. In all likely-hood, he will be able to mate, another year or two or three with his stamina. He has produced 103 Stakes Winners so far.

Happy hunting Dynaformer

Clearwater Charlie 30 May 2009 10:06 AM

LVR you are such a beautiful, busy lady.  Praying for your continued good health in carrying your new baby.

HaleyB 30 May 2009 10:12 AM

I'm hoping for a little girl this time.  Since this has been a "girlie" year, with Rachel Alexandra doing our sex proud (after all, she has now posed for Vogue!), it's time for a filly to show her brothers how good she can be!

smartysgal 30 May 2009 10:19 AM

Thanks for the update!  Excited to hear what the sec of the foal will be at the 60-day exam!

Karen 30 May 2009 10:27 AM

Think PINK!!!!!!!  :) Thank You for the update.  Filly filly filly.  We want a filly.  Come on LVR you can do this.  :)

StardustyRose 30 May 2009 10:58 AM

Great news, hope it's a filly! A beautiful sister for our boys....

Shirley in KY 30 May 2009 11:02 AM

Do you know if her owners are planning to give her a year off any time soon?

I know they would like a filly. Let's hope this foal fulfills their wish and that she gets a brake. How many years in a row has she been producing?

I know it's being done like that all over but I read an article on another blog about the care of broodmares and it opened my eyes about how successive pregnancies take a huge toll on the mare. She's amazing and the match with Dynaformer seems to be made in heaven...however, I am being unfair to think that she deserves a vacation?

I'm just asking...

Zookeeper 30 May 2009 11:17 AM

That's why I love to read this blog! 30 day pregnancy test :-)She is under better care than some women ;-)

Windy City 30 May 2009 11:35 AM

we are looking for a filly this time!

sunfire65 30 May 2009 11:48 AM

Thanks Ron for this wonderful news. We will keep you busy with all our posts. We are a huge group with a hunger for news about our "Barbaro Band of Brothers" family and it keeps getting bigger!! Now we'll have another Babynor to love and watch over. We need to get our new babys name soon since we have another Babynor to love and follow.

Hi Greg J, DustyRose and Rags. How is everybody doing? Catch ya later...

Lou in TX 30 May 2009 12:44 PM

Thank you for the pregnancy update! Thanks to the Mill Ridge people for generously providing so much information.

Karen in Texas 30 May 2009 1:14 PM

To Zookeeper - LVR was "open" in 2007 - she did not have a foal in 2008

mnd 30 May 2009 1:31 PM

Zookeeper....there have been two years in which she has not had foals, think one of them was last year.

lobieb 30 May 2009 1:43 PM

I am just hoping, Regardless if La Ville Rouge is pregnant with a Filly or Colt, That it is a safe pregnancy!

Angryyankee,

FYI, Just to let you and everyone know, "Nicanor" earned a Speed rating of 100 for his Huge Maiden Victory, The fastest Rating of any horse for the week at Delaware Park, Including ALL types, Dirt, Turf, Sprints (1st Race-42, 2nd Race-92, Third Race-92), Nice Going...

His next planned race is for June 17 at Delaware Park on the Turf, and if everything goes good with that race, Then Mr. Matz has said , Nicanor will be pointed to the Virginia Derby($750,000 Grade 2 Stakes!!!) at Colonial Downs in Virginia on the Turf!!!, I, for one, Predict HUGE things for Nicanor, His Maiden win was just the start...

Greg J. 30 May 2009 1:52 PM

Zookeeper.....

LVR has not been in foal every year in a row.  Right Ron?  Don't you rememeber Amanda making that very clear  Zoo?  :)

StardustyRose 30 May 2009 2:11 PM

Mary Glynn,

The Jockey Club, the Thoroughbred registry, only allows a live cover.  That means that in order to be registered, the foal must be produced from a natural mating between a stallion and the mare.  Artificial insemination is not allowed.

Zookeeper, this blog has been over this issue time and time again.  LVR did NOT produce a foal last year.  The mare will tell her caretakers when she needs a year off.

JAJ 30 May 2009 2:13 PM

Zookeper, I think La Ville Rouges health issues have been answered enough. Please take the time to read back blogs where Amanda patiently explained this situation. While I'm sure your concern is welcomed, the ignorance on this subject is not. I don't mean to be harsh but even if she had been foal every year don't you think it's rude of you to question this family on their breeding practices? After all, most people are on this blog because of their care and concern for Barbaro. I hope the Jackson's don't see this, I'm embarrassed for them but mainly for us the fans, it makes us appear so uneducated about La Ville Rouge.

I am so grateful La Ville Rouge is doing great, I think she knows this is a very important event. Yes, pink is the word! Maybe some pink mints for her will help. lol

Dona 30 May 2009 2:21 PM

In response to Mary Glynn's question "Semen was not collected on barbaro prior to his death why not":

The reason would be that for TB foals to be registered with the Jockey Club they have to be conceived from copulation between a male and female.  Artificial insemination is not allowed so there was really no point.  Also I might point out that he had an injured hind that was still healing so gathering semen would have been risking further injury.

RachelSatterfield 30 May 2009 2:22 PM

Mary Glen:

No I don't think that is an offensive question about Barbaro's semen, especially when you are talking about horses.

To be registered as a Thoroughbred

the colt or filly must have been conceived in the normal manner.  Artificial insemination is not allowed.

Gloria Davis 30 May 2009 3:03 PM

mary glynn,

the jockey club does not allow artificial insemination in thoroughbred breeding, all stallions must "cover" each broodmare in breeding.

dcousins 30 May 2009 3:08 PM

Girl Girl Girl!!!

Jennifer, CVT 30 May 2009 3:23 PM

Zookeeper,

She had a year off between Lentenor and the newest addition. Her body will tell her when she needs a break. Plus I don't see the Jackson breeding past foxhound siblings.

Jennifer, CVT 30 May 2009 3:25 PM

Hope it is another boy. Then there will be a family of "5 Guys". Better chance of finishing the Triple Crown for Barbaro.

Brandi 30 May 2009 3:30 PM

Zookeeper, LVH hasn't had a foal every year.  She had Nicanor and Lentenor in back to back years, then had a year off.  In a previous blog there is a list of her foals and what year she had them.

I'm thinking pink!  Hope it's a filly!

nannie284 30 May 2009 3:37 PM

As to the question on why semen was not collected from Barbaro...artificial insemination is not allowed by the Jockey Club so there would have been no point.

Samantha P. 30 May 2009 5:28 PM

We can wish for a filly but it's a little late for that.  Dynaformer is the one that will contribute the X or Y gene.  Does anyone know what proportion of colts to fillies Dynaformer has?  That being said, LVR has had all colts so she may have the kind of system that is kind to the Y gene.  You never know.  But I do hope that the Jacksons get their much hoped for filly!

dianne 30 May 2009 5:33 PM

YAY I'm so happy that she's in foal!

Any word on when Nicanor is running next??

Rechelle 30 May 2009 5:52 PM

To all who keep us informed on latest and greatest news, thank you it means alot.I hope La Ville has a comfortable pregnancy and healthy baby will be loved no matter whether a colt or filly. To Dynaformer you the man!

Tracy 30 May 2009 6:16 PM

Zookeeper, it was said a few blogs back that they rested LVR year before last if I remember correctly.  It seems to me that for LVR its a breed 2 years, rest 1 year process.

I for one am hoping for a girl this year :)  Any way about it, either gender is welcome :)  Just looking at the "kids" and how much they look like or act like each other is amusing me :)

Teri 30 May 2009 6:23 PM

The reason semen was not collected from Barbaro is due to the rules in the Racing Association.

The jacksons would have taken his semen to produce offspring, who would then in turn race.

However, the racing body does not accept artificial insemination as a proper breeding. So it has to due with that not being recognized as an actual breeding. its not offensive, its a legitimate question

As for giving a broodmare a rest, if i'm not mistaken a year off isn't really very important since the first few months of pregnancy isn't as taxing as lets say a woman's pregnancy.

Kay 30 May 2009 6:31 PM

I eagerly await to hear the sex of LVR's foal!

horsefan4ever 30 May 2009 6:47 PM

Thats fantastic!!! Cant wait to know if its a colt or filly. Eather one will be great! Yes LVR dose have a year off coming up(after this new foal is born). No owner just breeds there mare every year, its planed what year she will be bred and then when she will get  a year off. That mare is in the best possible care that anyone could give her, and considering she's in great shape and in high health I see no problem in her having a foal born next year. She didn't have a faol last year, so last year she had a year off.

Hopeforatriplecrown 30 May 2009 7:32 PM

She was not in foal in 2005 or 2008. Barbaro was born in 2003 and Man In Havana in 2004.  Man In Havana is now a pleasure horse.  He did not care much for the racetrack.

Mary 30 May 2009 7:44 PM

Thanks for the info. I'll be thinking pink, pink, pink ....

Ida Lee 30 May 2009 8:16 PM

Hoping for a filly, but as long as the foal is healthy and LVR also. PINK BOWS......pink bows......

sweet terchi 30 May 2009 8:37 PM

Thinking Pink....

Lisa in Colorado 30 May 2009 8:54 PM

So happy to hear that La Ville Rouge passed her 30-day pregnancy test. I am thinking pink(really hoping it's a beautiful little filly) but I also would be happy with either sex because Dynaformer and her make such gorgeous babies together. Wish her the best and also Babynor the best and Lentenor and Nicky Knocks. Thank you, Greg for letting us know that Nicky Knocks will be running in June and if he does well onto the VA Derby. Can I ask a question how did you hear about this information? I was just curious. I was wondering if you were close to Michael Matz and the Jacksons? If so that's really cool.

WannaATripleCrownWinner 30 May 2009 9:02 PM

Lentenor will be the next Triple Crown winner!

Tracy 30 May 2009 9:02 PM

Baby girl! baby girl! hope, hope, hope. Pray, pray, pray!

Rita 30 May 2009 9:21 PM

Thank you for the update:)

I look forward to Nicanor's next race.

Cassidy 30 May 2009 9:23 PM

Ron,

Thank you so much for the info

on LVR's 30 day test!  Hoping,

hoping for pink!  We will, of

course love either sex the foal

turns out to be.  There seems

to be something magical about

that family, everyone loves them even the hosts of the tv

horse racing show were so

touched when Nicanor won.

Other thoroughbreds have been loved greatly in the past, but I know of no others

whose family has been so well followed and so loved!

Azureblu 30 May 2009 9:44 PM

Yes, let us hope for a filly BUT let's not forget the little guy just born.  I've looked a lot at his pictures and he truly has "the look".  I think he's going to be a great one.  Anybody want to see Mom bred to another stallion?  A half brother or sister could also be very interesting.

hrseldy 30 May 2009 10:34 PM

Great news on LVR.  Wishing her a safe pregnancy for either a filly or colt. Has anyone heard any news on how Lentenor is progressing?  Thank you Greg J on the news of Nicanor's next race. I will be anticipating it!!!

Penny in TX 31 May 2009 9:33 AM

Hopefully a F I L L Y!!!!!  :)

Maria K. 31 May 2009 10:17 AM

that little guy just born on 3-10-09 is simply a stunning.. well built.. handsome baby colt..just hope we get more pictures of him in the future.. to compare his growth pattern...love to see more pictures of Rags2Riches foal also....

Ragsy 31 May 2009 12:52 PM

I would not mind seeing another boy... yes... that would be just dandy......or a beautiful filly will be accepted and loved....I loved it when HRTV announcers called Big Brown... Barbaro....

Ragsy 31 May 2009 12:59 PM

Don't they have any other stallions to breed this mare with? I'm good with the bros of Barbaro and all, but how about a little diversity? I certainly hope these folks aren't looking for a runner with equal ability as Barbaro becuase the odds of that are about 100-1.

JamesRockford 31 May 2009 1:20 PM

Hrseldy:

She has been bred to other stallions before but the best match so far has been Dynaformer.

lobieb 31 May 2009 1:57 PM

Cross your fingers for a filly.

Wouldn't it be so great to have a Barbaro Filly go to win the Derby?!?!? I mean, I'd love to see any of the Bros win it but think what a major thig it would be if not only a filly won, but a filly who's a full sister to the '06 winner!!!

~Nicole

Nicole 31 May 2009 2:07 PM

Thats great news. I can't wait to find out the sex of the foal, hopefully a filly but a brother would be awesome as well. It would be interestinfg to have a half brother/sister of Barbaro.

Alexis 31 May 2009 2:56 PM

La Ville Rouge was bred to Quiet American, which produced a foal in 2004, Man In Havana.  As I said earlier, according to Michael Matz, Man In Havana did not like the racetrack.  I think the Jacksons' will continue to breed her to Dynaformer.  The combination produced one champion, so the odds are higher that they will produce another one.

Mary 31 May 2009 3:20 PM

Thinking Pink but praying healthy for little Calypso or Serano Jackson. Thanks to all of the connections who realize how curious we all are for info about any of the Big Boss Horses'relatives. I can't think of any other family dynasty that has had a following such as ours.  Thanks Barbaro.

Bonnie3 31 May 2009 3:59 PM

Nicole

I thought about that.  That would be awesom if a filly could win the TC that was Barbaro's full sibling.  WOW that would make the industry so much more liked and people that hate horse racing would come out of the woodwork everywhere.  PINK!  :)

StardustyRose 31 May 2009 4:31 PM

Ragsy

How does it feel to be riding Rags right now?  Is she behaving for you?  LOL  :)

StardustyRose 31 May 2009 4:32 PM

I do hope for a filly, just to keep the female family going. But colt or filly, as long as it is a strong and healthy baby, that is the main thing. But I would love a little baby sister :)

Janesville Liz 31 May 2009 4:48 PM

Greg J got his info from the New York times. Michael Matz has several options in mind though, so keep watching he may run sooner than you think.

Berner05 31 May 2009 4:57 PM

I HOPE EVERYTHING GOES WELL AND BOTH MOTHER AND BABY COME OUT WELL! WHEN DOES MOM GET A BREAK?

KRIS FUJIMOTO 31 May 2009 7:46 PM

THINKING PINK!!!!!!!!!!

XXOO

nvsally 31 May 2009 8:30 PM

How about give the mom a rest now. Too much breeding back to back people.

classy 31 May 2009 9:33 PM

By the way one year off is nothing compared to how long she is in foal.

classy 31 May 2009 9:37 PM

Has Nicanor worked since his win?  I have been checking updates from Fair Hill and have not seen him listed so I am curious.  Love the news that he may be down the road from me in July if he does well in his next race.  Virginia Derby day is pretty cool for a small track in the middle of no where.  We  have only missed two so far.  Really loved Go Between, so sad that he died.  English Channel was super too.  Big shoes for Nicanor to follow since some nice horses have won that race.

Springsmom83 01 Jun 2009 1:10 AM

Well, Zookeeper, hope you've learned your lesson. Never, never, ever question the FOB's, the Jackson's, Barbaro, or anyone affiliated with them. Your question was honest, sincere, polite, and showed your concern over something you had read. But, you asked it without reading the tens of thousands of postings in multiple blog sites. For shame. Someone here even called you "ignorant".

And now, in addition to the number of foals LaVille has had in the past years and the typical frequency of breeding mares, what else have you learned on this site today?

TomF 01 Jun 2009 10:19 AM

WannaATripleCrownWinner,

    Your quite Welcome...

FYI, I am just a Huge Racing Fan and Follow Barbaro's Brothers very closely!  Here is the article that Mr. Matz laid out the possible future plans for Nicanor, Remember, Just tentative plans, anything could change based on numerous varibles(Nic's works, track condition, Etc...)

N.Y. Times Article:

www.nytimes.com/.../23racing.html

(Also, In the picture in the Article, YES, that is Nicanor's little Brother, Lentenor, To his left, Waiting to get some grass!!!)

One more thing.

Just to let everyone know, Dynaformer, The Sire to all these great brothers, Is one of the Best out there, as far as Breeding (America's leading source of stamina!, 1 1/2 to 2 Miles!!):

www.drf.com/.../104211.html

Lastly, To all of the fairly new Fans of this sport, A great tool for you to track any Horse or Trainer, is "Virtual Stable", Here is a link(It is free!), just register with your E-mail address as both your name and password, enter any horse or trainer, and you will get updates automaticly E-mailed to you for everything relating to them(I.E., Work-Outs, Race day Entries, and all of the trainer's races), It is a great tool to have, Enjoy, Here is the Link:

Greg J. 01 Jun 2009 10:29 AM

Thanks for the update. Best wishes for a safe, healthy pregnancy for this outstanding mare. As mentioned, Dynaformer has produced over 100 stakes winners.

fillyfillyfillyfillyfillyfilly

Kbuckeye 01 Jun 2009 12:34 PM

I'm hoping for a filly. I would love to see her named Calyspa (well, she would have to be named Calypsa3). There is a Serana that presumebly is still living (foaled 1993). The two previously named Calypsa's are deceased.

I was musing what names could be used if the Jackson's decide to contiue breeding LVR to Dynaformer after all of the "hound" names are used....La ville Dyna,Dynarouge,Dynaville, etc.

LACS70 01 Jun 2009 12:58 PM

Dianne,

As far as you question about Dynaformer's ratio of Colt's to Fillies?  I have tried to research it but with no luck!, I have come up with this, though:

Dynaformer:

18 crops, 1159 foals

2 champions,42 graded stakes winners, 103 stakes winners, 92 stakes placers...

15,639 Starts

2,074(13%) Wins

4,014(26%) Placings

$83,487,505 Earning's

Avg. Earnings/starter $96,517

Chief Earner: Perfect Drift$4,714,213

The only thing close to what you asked is:

His male offspring sold at auction: 351 Total

His Female offspring sold at auction: 281 Total

But, Like I said, Still haven't seen the Percentage of Males to Females!, But Thanks!, Because, I to am curious and I am still trying to find out, lol...

Greg J. 01 Jun 2009 3:07 PM

Dianne,

I give up!!!, lol.  I cannot seem to find out of the 1159 Foals from Dynaformer on what the average number of Colts to Fillies are!, Oh Well, I tried...

I can say that in the last three years, Dynaformer has had  63 Colts sold at auction and 42 Fillies Sold at Auction(Weanlings, Yearlings, Two Year Olds).

Greg J. 01 Jun 2009 3:18 PM

FYI,

This was in a Article today on Bloodhorse(Thanks Nick Hahn!), Talking about the opening of Colonial Downs in Virginia for this year's meet and the early nominations for the Virginia track’s two signature races, The $500,000 Colonial Turf Cup (Grade 2) June 20, and the $750,000 Virginia Derby (Grade 3) July 18.

"Nicanor" has been nominated for the Virginia Derby, This is from Nick's Article:

The sentimental choice among the nominees is "Nicanor", Barbaro’s full brother who won by more than 15 lengths on the Delaware Park turf May 13. Barbaro didn’t get a chance to compete in the Colonial Downs turf races, but his owners, Roy and Gretchen Jackson, won the Colonial Turf Cup with Showing Up in 2006.

Here is a Link to Nick's Article:

www.bloodhorse.com/.../colonial-downs-ready-to-launch-2009-season

I, for one, Cannot Wait, First a drive down to Delaware for Nicanor's next race, then (Hopefully) on a flight down to Virginia to see him take on the Big Boys....

Greg J. 01 Jun 2009 4:11 PM

TomF,

I've learned that I SHOULD stay away fron this blog.(Talk about stirring a hornet's nest!!! Ouch!)

But I'll stick around anyway, in spite of the "warm" welcome I received on my very first posting. I'm sure the FOB will set me straight again if I ever have the audacity to ask a question or to have an independent opinion.

Zookeeper 01 Jun 2009 5:08 PM

If I read the article right than Michael has nominated Nicanor for the Virginia Derby on 7/18.

lobieb 01 Jun 2009 6:41 PM

I'm hoping for a beautiful filly and just want all to go well.  Filly or colt, he/she will be so very welcome.

I really do think, however, that La Ville Rouge deserves a break.

Sally F 01 Jun 2009 6:45 PM

Thanks Greg J for the links and above information.  I now have my own virtual stable.  It was very easy to do.  Thank you!!

Penny in TX 01 Jun 2009 8:01 PM

Thank you Greg J. I always love information on Dynaformer. This article may explain why Dynaformer never wanted to pull up after a workout, sports.espn.go.com/.../wire and that is because he still had energy to burn.

Kathy 01 Jun 2009 9:52 PM

Zookeeper,

I wouldn't be dismayed, Most of the answers to you honest question were answered thoughtfully, So fans might get just a little over zealous but I think deep down they mean well...

Greg J. 02 Jun 2009 8:32 AM

I confess to mixed feelings...I

really think it would be in the

best interest of this mare to be

given a longer time period between

foals. It seems almost insensitive

and well, a bit greedy. Sorry to have to say that, but its an honest opinion. However, I do wish her, and the new foal, well. And yes, I cannot help but hope for a filly.

Barbara 02 Jun 2009 10:28 AM

I feel great Pride when hearing Barbaro's name precede one of his brothers name.....such a joy!!!

DONT YOU!!!

Ragsy 02 Jun 2009 12:00 PM

Zookeeper:

Dont feel thataway, I like yaaa....Hearts and Flowers to yaa...hugs and kisses from Lentenor,Nicanor,

Babynor and the one on the way.....so cool...

Feel The Pride!!!!

Ragsy 02 Jun 2009 12:04 PM

Using www.pedigreequery.com/.../dynaformer

I count a total of 943 foals. (guess 216 are missing).

505 are female / 438 are male = 53.55% female

She has a better the 50% chance of a female.

Joe 02 Jun 2009 12:14 PM

Zookeeper, stick around and ask away. For every blogger who wants to do the watutsi on you, shrug it off, 'cause there 's Greg J., and several others who will take the time to inform us on things we don't know and won't go out of their way to call us "ignorant", whether on this blog or any other. Besides how else will one learn?  Like my bro always said, "be like a duck, shake the water off and keep on going"! ( or waddling as the case may be!))

sweet terchi 02 Jun 2009 12:15 PM

Thinking Pink here, but as long as the foal and LVR are healthy, it really doesn't matter.

Hi Greg J, Stardust, Ragsy, Lou in TX !

horsenut23 02 Jun 2009 12:50 PM

Zookeeper...You are welcome to this site of FOB's. I am sorry if some were rude to you. Some have been on this site sooo long that they don't have much patience for those who are just joining. But you are welcome and you definitely have the right to your own opinion even if those on this site don't agree with you. Your opinions are welcomed. I to get quiet annoyed with some of that behavior but you just have to ignore it and read the next blog.

Hey FOB's...lets be a little more polite to our newcomers. Give them a chance to catch up and join in.

Greg J..thank you for the virtual horse site. I joined hoping I'll get information on Nicanor and Lentenor. Oooh so you think Nicanor will will in Virginia on the 18th of July. Is he still running the 18th of June in Deleware? Really appreciate all your hard work on keeping us informed about all aspects of this family. You're a good website friend.

Greg J.

As usual, thank you ever so much for all of the information you somehow seem to obtain.  Sometimes I wish I had the time you do to be able to find out all of this info.  Until then I'll continue to count of you and the other participants on the blog for info on Nicanor and Lentenor.  I did as you suggested and set up a virtual stable - I'm looking forward to the results.  One day I'll be able to make it to one of Nic's races and actually see him in person.  I'm going to Saratoga for Travers - who knows - maybe nick will be there! Or even Lentenor!  Wouldn't that be great.

Thanks again everyone for all the information.  And thank you Ron for continuing the blog we all appreciate you time, effort and knowledge.

FYI,

Hennigan(Hold that Tiger/Gliding Light) broke his maiden at Delaware today on the Turf!, Congrats to Vision Racing and Mr. Matz...

TO DIANNE: Re the question in your 30 May 2009 5:33pm post, the online Thoroughbred Database lists 943 named foals sired by Dynanformer, of which 505 (54%) were female and 438 (46%) are males. (I'm sure he's sired more foals, but the DB probably doesn't get updated continually.)

TO ZOOKEEPER: La Ville Rouge is a 13-year-old mare (foaled 1996), who has had only six foals to date, all males. In order, with year foaled in parentheses, they are: Holy Ground (2002), Barbaro (2003), Man in Havana (2004), Nicanor (2006), Lentenor (2007), unnamed bay colt (2009).

TO ALL: Please consider saving this information for the next time the questions come up here. Much easier to just copy and paste the answers than to spend time making people feel stupid or unwelcome for daring to ask a question that may have been addressed in the past. Perhaps the person didn't see the answer in the past, or perhaps s/he doesn't remember the answer. So what. A little bit of patience and kindness goes a long way. [stepping off soapbox now]

For Big Red 02 Jun 2009 7:42 PM

TO ZOOKEEPER: Re your 01 Jun 2009 5:08pm post, two of the worst aspects of most internet forums, in my opinion, are the tendency for regulars to become cliquish, and resulting in a tendency to be hostile to newcomers.

Also, some people seem to feel compelled to defend their favorite racing personalities at all costs. Such people tend to see insults lurking around every corner. If I could post a raspberry smiley to such folks, I would. First because the people being gratuitiously defended are usually wealthy folks who can take care of themselves, and second because the only ones who need defending in this sport are the horses.

So please don't let the impatience displayed by some to your questions deter you from participating as fully as you wish here. We're all equals, and your viewpoint is worth just as much as the next person's.

For Big Red 02 Jun 2009 7:55 PM

In Europe and some other parts of the globe it is believed that colts take after

the mare in both looks and temperament and vice versa

These boys certainly do,so I

hope a filly would not be like

dad!  Zookeeper,I've not been here very long either

although I'd been following

Barbaro since his Gulfstream

racing.  I believe that anyone

interested in Barbaro's family

both equine and human should

be welcome here of all places.

So be welcome!

Azureblu 02 Jun 2009 8:58 PM

Hey horsenut23

Where have you been? Glad you are back. I feel really bad that someone was rude to zookeeper.  Hopefully she will stay with us. We do have a lot of nice bloggers on this site.

I can't wait for the Jackson's to name our Babynor now that we have another one on the way. He needs a name and soon.

Claire (my granddaughter) is really excited about getting to see Nicanor race from Church Hill Downs on the 18th. She wants me to take her to Deleware Park but I can't do that since I've already gotten our flight back to TX.

Hey Greg J, did you say you were flying to see Nicanor race? If so you know we want lots & lots of pics or video's. I'm sooo excited to see him race again.

Hooray for Hennigan!!! Maybe he and Nicanor can race each other some day. Has anyone heard anything about Ice Road lately? Didn't he and Nicanor use to work out together? Maybe I got his name wrong. If so please correct me.

Catch ya'll later.

Lou in TX 02 Jun 2009 10:10 PM

For those who think that a year off is not enough, remember that they are not like humans. What they feel and what we feel are very different. And remember, if LVR were out in the wild, she would be bred every single year until she physically couldn't or died. So give the Jackson's a break!

RunRuffian75 03 Jun 2009 12:16 AM

Zookeeper, you were not off base at all, plus you were very polite in your questions...I nver want to read one day that LVR joins the list of mares that die from "foaling complications" at age 21, 23, etc which happened twice this week alone, and includes mares such as Secretariat's dam and many other beloved race horse mares...

da3hoss 03 Jun 2009 7:05 AM

One caveat to my last post: in no way is this passing judgement on the Jackson breeding practices...I respect them immensely...my point was to Zookeeper, that his honest question was not offensive or off-base...we all, I hope, want to see horses responsibly bred, we applaud responsible breeders and  i believe the Jacksons are the epitome of responsible breeders.

da3hoss 03 Jun 2009 7:16 AM

Lou in Texas please take many pictures of your trip and share them with us.... and have a great time....would love to go but am homebound right now...dang it.....

Stardusty Rose where are you ???

Horsenut23 good to have you around again....

GregJ thanks for the videos and links just great to see all...guess, I have read and viewed all esp.like those of Secretariat.... man o man what a horse....wonder if we will ever see another horse like him??????

Ragsy 03 Jun 2009 10:12 AM

FYI,

Here is the Page I used to get Dynaformer's Stats, It was last updated, June 1, 2009:

www.equineline.com/.../tt_main.cfm

For Big Red,

Update on Friesan Fire, He is out of the veterinary hospital, and yesterday Rick Porter said, "He is doing great at The Vinery."  Here is to a full recovery and can't wait to see him prove himself again on the track!!!

To All,

Thanks for the kind words, I am just a huge fan and try to provide information on this Great Family as best I can, Thanks again...

Greg J. 03 Jun 2009 10:20 AM

Thank You Greg J. for your good info and pictures at the MSNBC horse racing forum thread on Nicanor's win! There is also a long standing thread on that forum, created by a lady who posted as Swale 1984, who probably posts here as well.  That thread was started after Nicanor's first published work.

Another one of our guys just pointed this out today-

June 3, 2009 " Interesting to see that 'Nicy' has been nominated to the Northern Dancer on the Foster undercard.  It would be nice to see him at Churchill Downs."(Scarletgraypimpernel)

Anyone think anything will come of this nomination?

Here is the link to the main Nicanor thread at MSNBC-

boards.msn.com/.../thread.aspx

The MSNBC forum has it's own clique too, but if you avoid the arguments and just focus on horse racing content, it's all good.  It would be nice to see Swale1984 come back and reclaim her thread, along with the Lentenor one as well.  Until then, it's this blog for everything Nicanor and Brothers Barbaro.  Keep up the good work guys! (There should be active fan threads for many more racehorses currently running than there are, in my opinion.  We also have one of West Point's connections contributing to a Mr. Fantasy thread, a Mr. Hot Stuff thread, ect.)

Knew Nicanor Could Do It 03 Jun 2009 10:24 AM

Lets give a big group "HUG" and welcome to azureblu and zookeeper.

Zookeeper I called you a "she' so if you're a "he" please forgive.

da3hoss...I completely agree with you. Loosing a mare like LVR would be horrible. Having said that I think the Jackson's consider her health first before the foaling. They know what a great mare she is and would never intentionally put her in danger. I'm sure things happen that are beyond anyones control but that doesn't make loosing a mare any less painful.

When I can upon this site(plus all the others, like the wedding site) I guess I was one of the lucky ones. Everybody seem to accept me graciously. Thank you for that. I really enjoy having some people to talk horses with me. I'll admit I don't know very much about it but it's fun to learn from a lot on this site who do know a lot. Did that make sense? Today feels like Monday again.

Bid Red, I always enjoy your imput. You seem to know what you are talking about. I appreciate your knowledge on this site.

Got to run..catch ya'll later.

Lou in TX 03 Jun 2009 11:48 AM

yes, lou in tx, ice road was a stablemate with nick knocks, they worked out together. nicky also worked out with hennigan, who recently broke his maiden. wish all these horsey friends love and the best of luck and good health!

sandieh 03 Jun 2009 12:03 PM

TO DA3HOSS: Why not "pass judgement" on the Jacksons, or any other public figure, for that matter? The very quality that makes us human is our ability to reason and form opinions. One thing I strongly dislike on this and other forums (sports, entertainment, politics, etc.) is the tendency for some to try to shut down the opinions of others merely because those opinions run contrary to the majority.

With the sport/industry in such dire trouble, I'm not inclined to make false heroes of any trainer, owner, breeder, veterinarian, executive, politician, and reporter involved with Thoroughbred racing. None of them are powerless to help change things for the better.

For Big Red 03 Jun 2009 12:06 PM

Thanks everybody for your kind comments and the info on La Ville Rouge. I should have thought before I posted the question. The Jacksons are truly wonderful owners and rightfully admired for their willingness to try and save Barbaro's life. That should have given me a clue about their breeding practices. I engaged my keyboard before my brain...

Like da3hoss, I cringe when I read about a fine mare losing her life to foaling complications when she should have been pensioned much earlier.

Run Ruffian75, I would hope that breeders would give their mares "a break". The Jacksons do not need me to give them "a break" for not breeding La Ville Rouge to death. I EXPECT breeders to act responsibly. In their case, I typed before I thought, but there are too many instances where breeders are just as cruel as the "Mother Nature" you advance as an argument. When humans act humanly (as the Jacksons do) they are only doing what they are SUPPOSED to do. However, since I don't want to upset the apple cart even further, HATS OFF to the Jacksons!!!

Greg J. 03 Jun 2009 12:54 PM

A Hi and how are you Zookeeper and Azureblu.

I counted over 80 blogs created since March 2008. That is a lot of messages to go through. Might I suggest that everytime a new La Ville Rouge blog comes up that a brief bio of LVR be added by one of us so that newcomers understand what is going on with her and that she is extremely well cared for and not put upon.

And I have been entering messages on this blog since March 2008, and people still grumble at me on occasion, so don't take anything anyone says on this blog personally. I grumble back and then I get over it. Most if not all of them are sweeties.

Welcome aboard

Kathy 03 Jun 2009 1:58 PM

I forgot to add:

Long live La Ville Rouge!!!

May the next foal be a filly!!!

(I don't think the mare cares, one way or the other, but I can see that it would make a lot of FOBs very happy.)

Zookeeper 03 Jun 2009 2:42 PM

Someone asked about Lentenor working. He is being worked lightly. Some breezing but not being pushed right now. They are taking him slow.

Berner05 03 Jun 2009 5:45 PM

Welcome zookeeper and azureblu!

Lou in Tx, Greg J, Ragsy; Sorry, I've been busy waiting/watching for a PMU mare to foal on abr, the foal is here(colt), so i'll be back, thanks for the welcome back!

horsenut23 03 Jun 2009 7:25 PM

Thanks berner05 for the info on Lentenor. Please keep us posted for futher info. I have him on my virtual horse but haven't gotten anything yet. Did get the notice about Nicanor's work.

YEA!!! Go Nicanor!!!!

Zookeeper, when Barbaro was at the New Bolton Center, after his accident, my granddaughter sent him a Christmas card that she drew just for him. In about 8 weeks after that, she got a hand written note from Gretchen Jackson thanking her for Barbaro's card. Guess that's why I feel they are special people since she took the time to hand write my ganddaughter a thank you note. Not just anyone would do that with all the things the Jackson's have to do. She feed Barbaro a big basket of green grass from their pasture everyday when she visited him. Guess I'm a little one sided when it comes to them. I don't get affended if others don't agree so feel free to write your opinions of them. I promise I won't jump on you for your opinion.

Ragsy...I plan to take a lot of pictures of Churchill Downs since I've never been there before. You'll probably see my daughter as well as my granddaughter in most of them. Really excited about our trip.

Greg J..I may need some instructions as to how to post them though. I am on aol so if you could send me some instructions I'd really appreciate it. You see I'm still a novice on the computer. I do have a printer that can scan pictures if that helps any.

Ron, thanks again for keeping our site up and running. Don't know what I'd do without my horse friends.

Catch ya later everybody....

Lou in TX 03 Jun 2009 8:24 PM

Thank you for the welcome!  I

have taken a good look at LVR

every time a photo comes out

and she always looks in top condition,so I'm not worried

that she is over bred.  I have

been very disturbed by the

number of mares that have   of mares that have died this

year from foaling complica

-tions.  I don't recall so many

in other years.  I wonder if it

is because the foals are big?

They do seem to be breeding

for bigger horses.

Azureblu 04 Jun 2009 3:16 AM

Lou in Tx,

Is your camera digital?, If so, It is quite easy First, Download them to your Harddrive, Then goto FLICKR.COM(One of many great sites, the one I use, though!), Sign up for free, then download your pictures to your Photostream, You can add any comments you would like, To describe your pictures,  You can make them either public(For everyone to view) or Private(Only can be viewed by people you allow).  Also, add "Tags", words that describe your pictures(I.E., Horse Racing, Churchill Downs, Etc...), Then that is pretty much it, Hope that helps?, If any questions, Please feel free to ask...You guys should have an amazing time!

Greg J. 04 Jun 2009 9:16 AM

GregJ... thanks for the info. I'll give it a try when we get back. I do have a digital camera so hopefully it's as easy as it sounds.

Since Nicanor isn't racing at Belmont, does that mean he should be at Deleware on the 18th?

Got to run, have all 3 grandkids here now. Catch ya later.

Lou in TX 04 Jun 2009 6:30 PM

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
