Lentenor Breezes 3 Furlongs at Fair Hill

Lentenor, the 2-year-old full brother to Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro, had his first officially recorded workout June 15 when he breezed three furlongs in :38 at Fair Hill Training Center in Maryland. The time tied three others for the fastest of the day among six horses breezing at the distance.

Trained by Michael Matz for Roy and Gretchen Jackon’s Lael Stables, Lentenor reportedly had a previous three-eighths of a mile work that was not recorded.

Matz has not said when Lenny will make his first start. Barbaro, the ill-fated colt who lost his battle to laminitis in early 2007, made his first career start in October of his 2-year-old season. Nicanor, the full brother to Barbaro and Lentenor who is seeking his second career victory on Wednesday at Delaware Park, made his debut in January of this year, early in his 3-year-old season.

Way to go "Lentenor", Your First Official Work!  Could it really get any better?  We have Nicanor racing Wednesday, Lentenor posting his first work, Just an Amazing time to be a Fan of these two and all of their connections. Also, Not that I am comparing the two(lol), A little over a year ago(June 7th, 2008), Nicanor posted his first "Official" work, 3 Furlongs in 39 Seconds flat.  I wonder if Lentenor came back to his Stall and rubbed it in Nicanor's face that he was faster first time out, lol...

Way to GO Lenny.  You are so loved and we enjoy hearing about your training and living at Fair Hill.

Jerry 15 Jun 2009 3:05 PM

Good for you Lentenor. Great first workout. Shoot, your brother got a 37 just the other day at this distance. Hope your racing days are long and prosperous.

Kathy 15 Jun 2009 3:09 PM

good luck to nic this week

hope to see more from lentenor

heidi 15 Jun 2009 3:12 PM

Good Breeze for Lententor. I have a feeling, he's going to be a good one. I own a % of a nice 2 yr old Colt named "TAINO", who will not race until much later in the year. Wouldn't it be something, if they met up @ Gulfstream next January-April, 2010. I wish them both success.

Thank you for this update. Lentenor, keep up the good work!

Karen in Texas 15 Jun 2009 3:44 PM

So exciting though I know it will be awhile before Lentenor as we say "goes to the races" but it will be exciting to see his works until he does so.  Now we have two to keep a vigilance over in this blog.  As for Nicky-Knocks may he prevail on Wednesday and then on to biggger and better things. I have nothing but faith in our two boys.

lobieb 15 Jun 2009 3:46 PM

Good job Lentenor!

Arem 15 Jun 2009 3:50 PM

Great workout for Lenny! Expecting to see some nice things from him.

LyndaP31 15 Jun 2009 3:55 PM

Lentenor is on his way.  How very blessed we all are that the Jacksons, Matz, Stephens, all combine to recreate the Barbaro magic all over again (and again!)

And not forgetting La Ville and Dynaformer!!!  Those two wacky kids!

Trickle down horse racing joy . . . the very rich endure the time and expenses, and us fans get all the benefit, with little of the headache.  It is still a great time to be a fan of horse racing in America.  Thanks to good people like this.

Dream list- that Lentenor can be ready to run in one of the two year old stakes . . . AND WIN IT.  I am assuming that would make him a dual qualifier, three x likely to win in the future . . .

Knew He Could Do It 15 Jun 2009 4:07 PM

As a Barbaro fan Ill be hoping for the best.

Can one get much out of these workout times?  If so what times are you looking for?

Amatuer 15 Jun 2009 4:16 PM

It's so good to hear some news about Lentenor.  A good breeze for him and his older brother racing on Wednesday, it's almost too good to be true.  Wishing both boys God's speed in their training and racing.  Hoping to be at Delaware Park to see Nicanor do it again.

HaleyB 15 Jun 2009 4:22 PM

Good work Lenny!!!!  That's so exciting!!!!!  Can't wait to see you run!!!!  YAY! :)

Chase 15 Jun 2009 4:25 PM

Shoot, Greg J Babynor is going to have better times then his two big brothers so he will be the one with the last laugh.  Cause he looks like he is gonna be a big boy with a long stride. (LOL) and we must not forget the new one in the hopper.....

Whoohoo!  A great report on Lentenor.  Will we see him race as a 2 year old?  I had read once that he was progressing better than Nicky did at 2.  This is going to be fun following both young men. Good Luck Nicanor on Wednesday

RhondaH 15 Jun 2009 4:58 PM

It's just a joy to be able to follow Barbaro's siblings.  Wish I could go to Delaware Park on Wed to watch Nicanor but I'll be cheering him on anyway.  Lentenor is a beauty; not a bad start either.

TerriV 15 Jun 2009 5:10 PM

Thank you, Bloodhorse, for the upcoming video of Nicanor's race, and the update on Lentenor's workout. Gee....maybe it's a GOOD idea to develop a fan base for TBs...it seems to help in getting people paying attention to racing and getting people to the track.

Kbuckeye 15 Jun 2009 5:21 PM

Good job Lentenor!

shirley in KY 15 Jun 2009 5:22 PM

Great! Now Lentenor is starting his racing career, it will be great to see Barabaro's Bro's racing in the near future.

Greg J; too funny with the "trash talk", but he probably did!

Barbaro's first work: 3f in 39:0.  Lentenor was faster!  He's going to be fantastic!  When all the brother's are running (and winning) it will be a joy for those of us who love them so much, and best of all, shut the naysayers up.

Marigold 15 Jun 2009 6:24 PM

Nice going, Lenny!!!!!

Let's not worry about the Derby right now, let's just make sure Lenny stays happy and healthy! Over 50% of 2 year olds go through some terrible growing pains, so hopefully, he won't have them like Nicky.

Speaking of Nicky, GOOD LUCK!!!!!  I'm rooting for you!!!!!  :-)

go go lenny. good luck to him and his brother both.

christy tate 15 Jun 2009 8:54 PM

StardustyRose 15 Jun 2009 9:17 PM

Thats a great sign for it begin almost his first breeze. Its going to be perfect timing too, if he can just break his maiden in his first race then we got a Kentucky Derby hopeful!!! Way to go Lentanor!! We know that Barbaro's win wasen't a fluke, it was passion, determination, speed, and the pedigree. You have all of that Nicanor and Lentanor, were counting on you!! Good luck in your next race Nicanor!

HopeforaTripleCrown 15 Jun 2009 9:50 PM

Awesome! Hoping we'll see him in next year's Derby!

Penny in TX 15 Jun 2009 11:32 PM

Would it not be sweet for Lentenor to run in the Derby? It's way too soon to speculate. Let's all just pray for soundness of both mind and body for these two little brothers of Barbaro. And don't forget brother #3.n ;)

Run Nicky Run - rooting for you Wednesday!

Go Lenny Go!

SusieQme 16 Jun 2009 12:08 AM

nicanor and lenny you are both so loved just stay safe always Darlene.

darlene 16 Jun 2009 12:27 AM

Lentenor will  not disappoint.  He has it all.  Conformation, pedigree, intelligence, beauty.  He will impress us all!

Marigold 16 Jun 2009 2:29 AM

To the connections of Barbaro's family,

Thank you! Thank you! for the time spent informing the fans of these wonderful horses' progress. I think Nic will be here for the long run, someone like Dynaformer's other durable champions, i.e. Perfect Drift, Dynever, McDynamo. He may turn out to be a great stallion. As for Lenny, it still remains to be seen but he just might be the brother to fill the other's shoe.

ofelia 16 Jun 2009 7:54 AM

good luck on wednesday, sweet nicky knocks, run with spirit and that big heart you have, stay safe darling. and lennie, my goodness, it is hard to beleive how much you have grown so quickly. babynor, you already look half grown. i think i will cry (with happiness) when i see you guys run. it is like watching kids grow from babies. thank you, roy and gretchen jackson, all connections, and to bloodhorse, thank you...

sandieh 16 Jun 2009 8:09 AM

Ameture,

unless you get to see the fractional times i wouldn't read too much into it. What you want to see when looking at individual fractions is to see the horse gradually speeding up throughout, and finish the last eighth of the mile the quickest. If you get to see the work it's also nice to know how they did it, meaning were they all out, or did the do the work easily and within themselves.

LDP 16 Jun 2009 8:36 AM

Losing Barbaro hurt, but maybe it was what was meant to be to capture our attention to his fabulous family.Proud of Nicanor and Lentenor both doing fantastic.I am counting down to my Belmont party next year and plan on having a reason to celebrate the next triple crown winner.

Tracy 16 Jun 2009 9:46 AM

FYI,

Nicanor has been mad the M/L favorite(Really no surprise!), Here are the rest of the odds:

1 1 He's Solid Gold  12/1

2 2 NICANOR          9/5

4 4 No Mesa With Me  10/1

5 5 Stevil           3/1

6 6 Random Strike    20/1

7 7 Blood Moon       20/1

8 8 Rabbit Tracks     5/1

9 9 Tatnall Street    12/1

10 10 White Holiday   15/1

Also Eligibles:

3 3 Ferentz     6/1

I am praying Nicanor will not be a scratch!, Due to all the rain on the Turf, I would hate to be there and come to find out He was scratched, but also, If the track is off, then do right by Nicanor, I will just blow my money at the casino, lol...

Stardust,

I am going to go with Nicanor, He's Solid Gold, Stevil and Tatnall Street.  Top two, Nicanor and He's Solid Gold, but it really is anyone's guess, But just hope Nicanor races and everyone comes back safely...

Greg J. 16 Jun 2009 10:08 AM

Ameture,

I want to add to what LDP said.

Really, unless you were there and knew how the desired breeze was supposed to go, you can't read anything into the times.

As LDP wrote, you want the breeze to start slow with the last 1/8th the quickest.  You want them to finish strongly.

How did he go back to the barn?  Was he huffing and puffing and completely spent or was he hardly blowing and all excited about going fast?  Did he go straight in the work or was he lugging in or out?  Did he switch leads well at the top of the lane?  How did he cool out?  did he eat his lunch and dinner or was he hanging his head in his stall?

The answers to those questions tell you a lot about the breeze.

JAJ 16 Jun 2009 10:24 AM

Nicanor's reaction when he saw the rest of the field he was up against, lol:

Yes, I know, Way too Much time on my hands...

Greg J. 16 Jun 2009 11:59 AM

Way to go Lenny!  Hope to see you racing at Keeneland in a few months.

Kim 16 Jun 2009 12:03 PM

WOW I just have to say this and I am sure that a lot of people would agree.  In going through the "Tracking Barbaro's Brothers blogs", it is quite apparent to me that there is not another horse in history that has this many fans.  It is incredible that it has been over 2 years since we lost our beautiful Barbaro on that horrible day (quite sure some of you are with me on that one) and still they are as strong as ever.  Not Curlin or any horse has this much fame.  It is fame accross the board too.  I talk to people all the time that are not into horse racing but love these brothers and love Barbaro.  It is stunning that ONE horse has had this much impact on the racing industry.  ONE horse with his will to survive captured the hearts of so many.  It wasn't just a temperary thing either.  It is still going as strong as ever.  4 siblings.  Well one in the oven :).  Just amazing.

Hats off to the Jackson's, Michael Matz, Peter and of course ALL of the connections for making this all a reality.  I can't say that I have EVER known of a owner or trainer that have stole hearts of millions.  We will always love Barbaro and even today that love is standing strong.  Everytime I see these brothers, I just smile and know that Barbaro is and indeed the most spectacular horse in the world.  :)

We love you Big guy AND we miss you.  These blogs are more than enough proof that you are indeed one in a million.  :)

I hope no one takes offense to this post as I am speaking out for a lot of people here.  :)

StardustyRose 16 Jun 2009 12:14 PM

Way to go Lentenor!

Good luck Nicanor!

I'm sure much has been said about continuing to breed LVR back to Dynafomer.  But I say to the Jacksons- thank you ever so much!

You've given us full siblings to watch, love and Cheer for- now and for many years to come.  THanks!

Whoever said this previously- this blog is a wonderful thing for thoroughbred racing.  Especially for the family of our beloved Barbaro.

Would sure love to be back east to watch Nic tomorrow and the whole family in the future.

CA Fan 16 Jun 2009 12:54 PM

Well said StardustyRose.  No other horse in history has ever garnered this much attention from all over the world like Barbaro. There was something special about Barbaro.  He had an aura. The attention he received was not only coming from horseracing fans but from fans who did not follow the sport. That goes to show that was something special about him.  This attention is still continuing as we see with Nicanor and Lentenor.  All the other horses have faded and you don't hear much about them nor their brothers and sisters but  Barbaro's family is still going strong.  Hopefully Lentenor will win the Triple Crown and bring closure. I truley believe that Barbaro would have won the Crown.

I pray that both brothers stay safe and have successful racing careers.

Chris K 16 Jun 2009 4:23 PM

Good news! Lenny's working and Nicky's in an upcoming race. It's great to be able to follow the siblings of Barbaro. Can't wait to see recent pics of the two! Their new little brother is also adorable.

MJ 16 Jun 2009 8:58 PM

So very exciting to have Nic and Lentenor!!! GOOD LUCK NIC in your race tomorrow.

Lentenor might just be the one~~~but still LOVING NIC!

Kath from SC 16 Jun 2009 9:30 PM

Does anyone know when Lentenor had his first untimed 3 furlong work? I know this was his second.

Mary 16 Jun 2009 9:37 PM

Has the youngest brother of Nicanor and Lentenor been named yet?

If so, what is it?

Dianna 17 Jun 2009 12:32 AM

hey, hey, stardustyrose, no offense taken, at all. it is our deep love for barbaro and his family that makes us feel this way.i also smile whenever i see the boys, mom and dad. like i said many times, nicky knocks, you can come to my barn anytime, and please feel free to bring the family. love to you BIG man in Heaven, our angel Barbaro!

sandieh 17 Jun 2009 6:41 AM

that is great news but i had heard that he also runs good at a mile which to my knoledge he has never been timed doing that 38 seconds is good for  furlongs dont get me wrong but i just want to see him work out at a longer distance so that i can see what he has before i actually say he is good or say that he can be good for that matter and i would love to actually see pictures of him to see how his grouth is progressing the only request is this how will he do in a real race against real compitition thats what matter in this business no body here cares about a horse when a horse does in practice. the only place it really matters is on a race track i know there has ben a lot of people comparing him to another horse his brother nicanor and barbaro before that there is always going to be a comarison due to who he is related to that is only nateral i would like to see hi in ht chanpane later on in the year  but if this horse is that good prove it just because he has the same body mass as a triple crown winner that doesnt mean that he will actually win the triple crown on the bright side i know everybody need and i cant wat to see him run a race i think he will be good at it even better than nicanor who will they choose as a jockey hopefully someone with a bit of experiance but not edgar because i think a different choice would be nice they road that train to many times i wish him the best of luck and ill be keeping my eye on him to see what he does but im not holding my breath

MATT H. 17 Jun 2009 11:00 AM

sandieh...

Yeah Barbaro was indeed the horse that changed racing for the better.  Did you hear about the two horses that were rescued from almost going to slaughter that were both good race horses?  Charismatic and one other horse.  Can't remember the  name but they are or/were stuck in Japan. Now peoples are working to get them back here.  Anyone know about this?  It was on ESPN.

I am pretty sure that the FOB's are jumping into that one.  I have told people this and I'll say it again.  Don't ever let an FOB get wind of ANY type of abuse or neglect to a horse.  We will not tollerate it.  :)

StardustyRose 17 Jun 2009 11:18 AM

There was a nice piece in U.S.A. today about the Barbaro Family so read it if you wish.

Barbaro, our shooting star...otherworldly talent. Came to fulfill a mission.  He did, and then left.  Our hearts broke, but Nicanor, Lentenor and Babynor (soon to be named Margano) are healing our broken hearts and doing so beautifully! Good luck, today, Nicanor, run well, run fast, stay sound.  God Bless Nicanor.

Marigold 17 Jun 2009 12:46 PM

I think Lentenor is the one!! Good luck to both.

Vevita1 17 Jun 2009 2:43 PM

He's the one! Trust me on this!

Lots of rain in the Delaware Park area today, I wonder if Nicanor will still run if the turf is "yeilding". I sure hope so. I guess we will know in about an hour and a half. Go NICANOR !

Great news about Lentanor's work. He seems to be coming along a bit quicker then Nicky did. This is a good thing. It would be fantastic to see him run in the Remsen, Champaigne or the Breeders Cup juvenile this fall.

MDFANOFRACING 17 Jun 2009 3:02 PM

good race nic we are proud of u.

I just saw Nic's race at Delaware......AWESOME is all I can say!!!!!  Thank god for ESPN's live racing on their site!!!!!!  Nic just toyed with the field!

CarolinaJude 17 Jun 2009 4:46 PM

I'm a lurker here, and never post, but thought I'd jump on and let everyone know he got the win- was browsing around other sites and got the results :) Couldn't find by how much, but thought I'd post for anyone else wondering how he did today.  1 1/8 finished in 1:52.95.  Go Nicanor!!

defree 17 Jun 2009 4:51 PM

Told ya it was a lock .Keep him at a mile or try 7 furlongs on dirt, he loves toon the front so longer distance doesn't seem the way to go. Easy money again.Stay with the local talent at Delaware so we can make more money.

The Phantom 17 Jun 2009 5:00 PM

Way to freaking go NICKY ! Can you say Breeders Cup Turf Mile ? what an awesome performance.

MDFANOFRACING 17 Jun 2009 5:02 PM

Hi Lentenor!

So glad to hear that you are in training for your first race.

Hopefully it will be on turf since your brothers Nicanor and Barbaro have done well on turf.

Waiting for your Kentucky Derby win of 2010.

You can do it, Lentenor.

Lots of love and kisses.

Lise from Maine 17 Jun 2009 8:38 PM

Seeing what a fantastic job Rosie Napravnik is doing with Nicanor, maybe she should be aboard Lentenor when he is ready to race. Kentucky Derby 136, Lentenor with Rosie Napravnik aboard.

Rambo 17 Jun 2009 11:07 PM

I'm excited too about Lenny coming out. I know Michael will do what's right re: his development. Of course we have seen this in the past Man in Havana and Nicky and others.

So excited about Nicky's win and looking forward to seeing if he'll hold off comers in a stakes race.

Matt H. - I got about three or four lines down in your post and got lost. Do you realize you didn't use a single comma or period or capital letter? It makes your post almost impossible to comprehend.

Jessica T 18 Jun 2009 10:44 PM

I am amazed that after Barbaro lost his life...the love just keeps growing....and spreading to all horses..of course...the brothers and parents never forgotten....in this...I ask GOD that Mr.& MrsJackson and M.Matz does not tire of the public.....
