Drumroll Please: Dam of Barbaro is Carrying a Filly!

La Ville Rouge, the dam of ill-fated Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro, has been checked in foal at the 62-day stage of her pregnancy for 2009 and is believed to be carrying a filly. A multiple graded stakes-place daughter of Carson City, La Ville Rouge has produced six foals – all males.

According to Headley Bell, an adviser to owners Roy and Gretchen Jackson, La Ville Rouge was checked June 29 by Dr Richard Holder of Hagyard Davidson McGee and the test showed she was carrying a healthy fetus believed to be a filly. The mare was bred to Dynaformer, the sire of Barbaro, on April 26.

“Mr. and Mrs. Jackson are delighted that she continues to be in foal and it is a prospective full sister to Barbaro,” Bell said.

On another note, although he has not specifically discussed it with the Jacksons or Matz, Bell said it is likely too early in Lentenor's training regimen for his connections to have a schedule set for his first race.

 Stay tuned.

Such exciting news.  Guess thinking pink really works. The line will now continue hopefully if she is healthy.  Good work as I strongly believed it would be another colt.

lobieb 30 Jun 2009 6:46 AM

Wow, finally a filly. Congrats to La Ville and the Jacksons. Let us hope and pray she continues to have a safe pregnancy and  a healthy birth for mom and daughter!!! I bet she is going to be a big girl. Also congrats to Nicanor and Lentenor for their continued progress. Will Nic be running in July?  Congrats again.

Chris B 30 Jun 2009 7:11 AM

Thanks Ron and Headley for this great news. Must have been all that "Pink Think."

Good Luck La Ville Rouge. I will be sending healthy thoughts your way throughout your pregnancy.

Super news!  Any healthy foal is super news, but a long-awaited filly is double super.  May God bless La Ville and the foal.  Congrats to Mr & Mrs Jackson!

GIRLS RULE!!!!! Wanna take a guess how spoiled she's going be?

Kim 30 Jun 2009 8:48 AM

I am so happy for the Jackson's that they will finally get the filly that they have most wanted. May La Ville Rouge continue to have a good pregnancy, and that Little "Calypsa3" (name I'm pulling for) is foaled safely and grows up to be a strong, proud member of a special family.

LACS70 30 Jun 2009 8:52 AM

Fantastic! Now we can watch for Rags to Riches' filly to come zipping along in 2011 or so, and wait for La Ville's filly to grow into a healthy, spunky filly. We need some more great fillies.

MtBFan (STILL) 30 Jun 2009 8:57 AM

What wonderful news.  Prayers for LVR and baby for a healthy pregnancy and a safe delivery.  The Jacksons and all the connections must be so happy.

HaleyB 30 Jun 2009 9:29 AM

OK, so  I lose that bet, happily. Im very glad to hear she is carrying a filly, the last two names in the fox hound list sound feminine. Its only right her next two foals should be girls, way to much equine testosterone in that family  LOL. Congrats to the Jacksons, all the Barbaro family connections and the fans.

Holy Hannah!  Finally, a filly for La Ville Rouge!  This is marvelous news and my best wishes and congratulations to all!

We're all so excited and happy for the Jacksons!

GinnieJ 30 Jun 2009 9:49 AM

Ragsy,

Maybe we are getting ahead of ourselves a little(lol), But the last name in The Jacksons Painting is  "Calypso"!!!, (Jim C. over on ABR, Came up with  "Calypso Bay"), Either one would be Perfect for a Filly...

Greg J. 30 Jun 2009 9:49 AM

In this season of "Girl Power" Dynaformer jut knew it was time to sire a filly! Congrats to all of the connections and God bless LVR with a healthy pregnancy and birth. This is so exciting!  Calypso on the way!

Bonnie3 30 Jun 2009 9:50 AM

WOW!!!  I got chills at the news.  Thank you for this blog and congrats to all involved.  I, too, thought that Calypso would be a great name for a filly.

bowlofflowers 30 Jun 2009 9:58 AM

A FILLY!!!! Just the news we have all been waiting for.

The Jackson's must be over the moon. I am so happy for them.

I just hope we don't have to wait two months to see pictures of her. I don't think I will be able to hold on that long. :)

Thanks to Bloodhorse for sharing this wonderful news.

thats great news iwould like to see a full sister to barbaro this it happening to late in the game for me to have a chance for me to follow her career and have me bet on it and if she is that good which we dont know yet so far to me lentinor is the best one out of the 3 he has the natual speed hid brother had and it sounded like to me from what was sed yesterday he has the drive as well i love horses that are just nateral to run and no one forses them to run

MATT H. 30 Jun 2009 10:14 AM

OK guys, I'm sure we're all excited about this news but we still have to keep some perspective. Having a mare pregnant at 62 days is certainly preferable to not being pregnant. However, it is a long way from June 29, 2009 until March 2010 and a lot of things have to go right for her to produce this filly. So let's not get ahead of ourselves or assume too much at this point. Cross our fingers and hope mother nature cooperates and LVR has a healthy pregnancy and foal.

rmitchell 30 Jun 2009 10:15 AM

Wonderful news!! Blessings to everyone.

Greg J. 30 Jun 2009 10:31 AM

I think that we all have been praying that a little Calypso would make an appearance and give La Ville Rouge a rest. May it be a healthy pregnancy and a big strappling filly.

Congrats to all connections.

katew 30 Jun 2009 10:38 AM

I just knew it would be a filly because she was conceived on my only daughter's birthday--April 26! I'm sure the filly will be as intelligent, beautiful, competitive, and good natured as my daughter as well! Wishing the very best to all of Barbaro's family.

CLee 30 Jun 2009 10:45 AM

That is SO wonderful!  I'm so glad for the Jacksons that a filly will be brought into the 'Barbaro family.'  Hooray!  Now...what shall we name her?

smartysgal 30 Jun 2009 10:46 AM

I thought the next name in line after Margano is Sereno?  This is such exciting news!  Especially since this has been a tremendous year for fillies! Look out Rachel and Zenyatta!

Yay!!! When I saw the headline i was said: No way!! Go la ville. She'll look just like her momma!!! Awsomeness all around! Congrats La ville! Congrats Roy and Gretchen!!! I hope she doesn't lose the foal! Can we please have more pics of Lentenor? Possibly while he's training.

Liv 30 Jun 2009 11:23 AM

WOW!!! It'a a filly!!! How wonderful for the Jacksons. I hope LVR has an uneventful pregnancy and an uneventful birth. Let's hope things don't go like they did when Babynor was born but an easier birth. She is such a wonderful mare and a very good Mother to her babies.

Calypso, the name, has been taken but you could add another name like someone on this blog did,  Calypso Bay or Calypso La Ville.

Greg J, you said Mrs Jackson said Babynor's name started with an "M" so has to be Margano or Macarno. I've seen it written both ways so do you know which is right? We need to get Babynor named right away since we now know we have a filly on the way.

Thanks Ron for getting this info to us so quickly.

Hope everyone has a great day.

This little filly already has a lot of expectations, and she's still microscopic. :D

MtBFan (STILL) 30 Jun 2009 12:41 PM

WONDERFUL news!  Did not think there was much chance that she'd finally conceive a filly, but miracles, and positive thinking, can happen! This little filly will be something special (think Rainbow View).

Now let's turn our positive thoughts toward safe, successful racing careers for Nicanor and Lentenor.

Marigold 30 Jun 2009 1:02 PM

Awesome news! Hoping and praying for a healthy mom and baby. I agree the last two names do sound more feminine. :-)

-Hannah in TX

hmb0725 30 Jun 2009 1:05 PM

Lou in Tx.,

"Marcano" is the correct spelling, and Ms. Jackson is on record saying the name starts with a "M", and "Marcano" is registered, So, that should be the little colt's name, But remember, The Jackson's generally have until February of the colt's 2-year-old year to name their Thoroughbred.

I know I am getting way ahead of everything, I am sorry, But "Calypso" was registered in 1999, So that is off the table, BUT "Calypso Bay" is Registered!, I know it is a long way from now, But if everything goes perfect, I will say the two names will be, "Marcano" and "Calypso Bay"(Thanks Jim!), But, First and Foremost, Is that La Ville Rouge stays healthy...

Stardust,

Hope this great news helped put you in a better mood!

Greg J. 30 Jun 2009 1:12 PM

I hope this is everything the Jackson's have hoped for. Maybe now, LVR will be able to stop having to reproduce a  baby every year.

kathyk 30 Jun 2009 1:36 PM

Congratulations to our La Ville.  May she have a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby.  I'm already exited about the filly.  Hopefully she'll be the first filly to win the Triple Crown!! Wouldn't that be something??!!

MJ 30 Jun 2009 2:09 PM

MtBFan (STILL)--at approximately 62 days, an equine fetus is not microscopic--it is about 8-9cm in length (just so you know!)

F Weldon 30 Jun 2009 3:30 PM

I believe that because a name is registered does not mean you cannot name another horse that name. The restrictions are based on the previous horse registered with that name's career. For example, there are several Nicanors listed. In order for a name to be so called "retired" by the jockey club, the horse must be a stakes winner or champion of some sort. There can never be another Barbaro registed with the jockey club because he won the Kentucky Derby. Also, im pretty sure the next name in line after Marcano is Sereno, not Calypso.

MDFANOFRACING 30 Jun 2009 3:49 PM

rmitchell got it right about this being very early in LVR's pregnancy and to wish for everything to go right and mother nature to cooperate.

Also keep in mind that the article said, "...is believed to be carrying a filly."  It's probably accurate, but sometimes you get a surprise.

That said, hope all goes well and that it IS a filly.  Given how long the Jackson's have waited for one, I wonder if they will not race her?  Since they want her for broodmare potential, maybe they won't risk the track?  She would certainly have enough brothers out there carrying the silks!

FYI,it would be very unusual for owners to point a filly at the Triple Crown races.  Given that you already have one late maturing youngster in Nicanor, you'd just have to wait and see how the filly developed.

HorseFirst 30 Jun 2009 3:55 PM

Yay! What great news....thanks to the Jacksons and Headley Bell for sharing this fantastic news. Best wishes to La Ville Rouge for a successful pregnancy.

Kbuckeye 30 Jun 2009 3:58 PM

Greg J......

Thanks.  It did brighten up my day. I don't think "anything else" could have put a smile on my face. LVR and the family just is beyond great and Barbaro will have a baby sister.

Leaving for L.A. Thursday morning.  I'll have my blackberry but I don't know if I'll be on line much.  It will probably be pretty crazy down there.

Keep track of the horses for me OK?  :)

StardustyRose 30 Jun 2009 4:00 PM

For those who are still harping on La Ville Rouge needing a "rest" - please note that the mare did not have a foal in 2005, and did not have a foal in 2008.  She doesn't need a rest.

Cleone 30 Jun 2009 4:02 PM

kathyk..

I wasn't going to do this but please go back and do some research.  LVR has NOT had a baby every year.  It is Black and White.  I really wish that people would not say that when it is not true.  I am not getting on your case, maybe you didn't know but LVR again has not been in foal every year.  :)  I hate rumers and that is one of them.

StardustyRose 30 Jun 2009 4:04 PM

FYI---The name Sereno is a masculine Latin derivation meaning "tranquil". The feminine equivalent is Serena.

Karen in Texas 30 Jun 2009 4:11 PM

"I think the interesting question will be is will they take the chance and race this precious filly or will they   add her to their broodmare band?"  Ashley from Winnipeg

The Jacksons, like it or not are in the racing business.  If this filly shows any talent, they'll race her.

yawn 30 Jun 2009 4:13 PM

Mdfanofracing,

I should have said "Reserved" not "Registered", But "Marcano" and "Calypso Bay" are "Reserved", "Sereno" was skipped over, It was taken,  The Jackson's have been going from right to left, Calypso is the last Dog in the painting...

Greg J. 30 Jun 2009 4:21 PM

I suppose one should not try and forcast the future.... BUT....what ever Mr.& Mrs Jackson wants is fine with me....even though I never stood a chance.....

I think Sereno is next in line???Beautiful name for a girl!!!

Ragsy 30 Jun 2009 4:53 PM

(Girls rock!)

horsefan4ever 30 Jun 2009 5:06 PM

The 2005 foal would have been by Deputy Minister. LVR got in foal but aborted. Greg J - please check, but I really think the correct spelling is Margano with a G not a C. And why not reserve "Babynor" for the filly?

diastu 30 Jun 2009 5:09 PM

Wow a Filly!!!! How exciting.  I hope LVR has a healthy and safe pregnancy and that her baby girl comes into the world healthy and safe also. The Lord knows she will be loved beyond all reason because she'll be a member of such a beloved family. Congratulations to the Jacksons for getting the Filly they wanted so badly. Wow again. I bet she's going to be a beauty!!

Ida Lee 30 Jun 2009 6:44 PM

..a filly!!! I am SOOO happy and happy for the Jackson's. I wish Mom and the little girl a very healthy 8-9 months...and of course, great health from that point on.

It is so neat to read everyone's comments and feel the excitement about this...

Has there been any firm word about Nicanor's next race?

Irene 30 Jun 2009 6:48 PM

I've been reading about everybody's ideas for naming the filly.  Sereno is nice.  Another possibility since Rouge as in La Ville Rouge is red might be Calypso Rose/Rouge?

zowie 30 Jun 2009 7:06 PM

I send prayers for LaVille and this lovely filly.  May the line continue and grow strong.  Congrats to the Jacksons.

Kathy Kimber 30 Jun 2009 7:14 PM

OK I'm looking at a copy of the Jacksons' dog pictures and this is how they are described: 1 picture with the 4 dogs from left to right: Margano, Sereno, Lentenor and Nicanor. Then there are 2 separate portraits: one of Barbaro and one of Calypso. So it would seem to me that if we're guessing that means Babynor will be Sereno and the Filly hopefully will be Calypso since Margano is not really a girl's name(or so I think).

Ida Lee 30 Jun 2009 7:23 PM

Yay! Filly! ^.^

Glassoniongirl 30 Jun 2009 7:28 PM

YIPEE!!!! A little girl~~all that thinking pink worked. I am so very excited...Way to go LVR and Daddy D....

Kath from SC 30 Jun 2009 7:56 PM

Barbaro

Nicanor

Lentenor

Margano

Sereno

Calypso

That is the correct order of the names in the hound picture.

May La Ville Rouge have a healthy pregnancy and deliver a happy, healthy foal.

Vthomas 30 Jun 2009 8:05 PM

All right, but she is still a very tiny filly :-D

Calypso Hurricane popped into my head, but maybe because I'm from Galveston, TX.

MtBFan (STILL) 30 Jun 2009 8:27 PM

Nicole 30 Jun 2009 8:42 PM

I am so happy to hear it is a girl. I am sure she will be absolutly beautiful. Hopefully she will have pink ribbons in her mane!

Elizabeth 30 Jun 2009 11:40 PM

Sereno is (masculine) Latin for 'serene, or used to call something that is calm".  Sereno is also known as a male name, and can be found in use around the world.

Not that it matters to me, but I am hoping the people involved with this filly start a new page with her, and a "correct" name for her.

The good news for those that insist on sticking with a painting until the naming is complete.  Calypso is Greek, "to cover, to conceal". Also, in Greek myth this was the name of the nymph who fell in love with Odysseus after he was shipwrecked on her island of Ogygia.

Honestly, I don't like either name and think something more creative, (horse) fitting, and fresh, could be used for the long awaited filly.

Hope that helps in further opinions and discussion.  Only time will tell...

Sereno / Calypso 01 Jul 2009 12:57 AM

That is really exciting news! I will pray that La Ville Rouge has a safe and uneventful pregnancy. Here is to a happy and healthy full sister to Barbaro.

gingersticks 01 Jul 2009 10:17 AM

Lou in TX,

the name is spelled Margano. In the picture i looked at the G in the name is capitalized and it's very hard to see whether its a C or a G, so i can see how someone could have mistaken it.

LDP 01 Jul 2009 10:34 AM

Prayers for a safe delivery for La Ville Rouge and foal. That's all that is important NOW.

judylovesjohnhenry 01 Jul 2009 10:54 AM

Diastu & Everyone,

I don't mean to belabor this point anymore, So, I am sorry up front, But the correct spelling is not "Margano", It is "Marcano", It has been misspelled on previous article's regarding the names, I just wanted to clear this up, It really doesn't matter either way, But I figured people would want to know.  I guess we will all find out when the baby colt is officially named  : )

Lastly,

"Sereno" was skipped over or taken, Take your pick, But like I said previous, Mrs. Jackson has mentioned that the baby colt's name starts with a "M", Hence, "Marcano".  So, That only leaves "Calypso" as the remaining Dog/Portrait, But "Calypso" is taken, So, "Calypso Bay" and "Marcano" have been reserved....That's it, I am done with the names, Whew, lol...

Great news! Just had to smile when I saw the update, even LVR is beating the odds. Hope all goes well with them both.

Whatever the Jacksons decide to call the foals is their choice but I like the fox hound painting idea and hope they continue with it.

Tizzy 01 Jul 2009 11:18 AM

A filly! That just made my day. Hopefully everything will go all right. I hope they continue with the painting names as well. =)

Alexis 01 Jul 2009 12:20 PM

Why can't she race and then become a broodmare, like her mother did?? Mama became a broodmare at @ 5 years of age, after a racing career and after the Jacksons purchased her.

Marigold 01 Jul 2009 1:11 PM

tizzy, i smiled too when i heard the update (and screamed) I am still smiling. our smiles are the love we feel for this family. sure would loved to have been on the farm when the jacksons were informed. i love them too, for sharing all of this with us. love to you boys, mom and dad. oh, thanks dynaformer!

sandieh 01 Jul 2009 1:17 PM

Just popped into my head - all the Colts have gotten mom's temprament and good looks.  Wonder if the Filly girl will take after dad?

Sorry, but like I said it just popped in there.......

Bob D. 01 Jul 2009 1:58 PM

Any word on when and where Nicanor is going to run next?

Any chance on an interview with Peter Brette about Lentenor?  He did one on Nicanor at about this time last year.

Any recent photos on both brothers?

Marigold 01 Jul 2009 2:12 PM

Very exciting to finally see a girl, but what would be even more exciting is if she came out not bay. What are the odds of that? I don't know but even if she is Bay she will be GORGEOUS and AMAZING! Good luck and health La Ville Rogue!

Catherine 01 Jul 2009 6:21 PM

I wonder if the filly will take after her father.I bet she will be a little firecracker full of personality. Can't wait till she arrives healthy and safe along with mom too.

Tracy 01 Jul 2009 7:12 PM

hi all calypso rouge

k.w.j........n.c. 01 Jul 2009 7:17 PM

I still think "Barbaretta" would

be a nice name for the little

girl.

Don 01 Jul 2009 7:54 PM

YEA a girl I bet the Jacksons are thrilled I hope she is a healthy filly cant wait till she is born.

darlene 01 Jul 2009 8:30 PM

This is some exciting news. A sister for all the brothers! Here's to a healthy gestation for LVR and a safe delivery for Mom and baby girl.

Penny in TX 01 Jul 2009 11:39 PM

I'm still sticking with CALYPSO LA VILLE.  It just has a ring to it.

Thanks Greg J for the correct spelling of Marcano. Who should know best but the London Museum. Like you have Said no nicely before, Sereno is taken so that name isn't an option anymore. Hope everyone gets it now. NO SERENO!!

Glad everyone is as happy as I am about the filly.

Ron, any thing new about Babynor?

Any chance of a video of Lentenor training? That would be great. Sorry we are so hard to please but gosh, there are so many brothers to keep up with now. Thanks ahead for anything.

Lou in TX 02 Jul 2009 12:19 AM

good luck to the owners and the next baby her name is lucky baby are you guys with me ......

william 02 Jul 2009 1:47 AM

How about the name Serenity?

Diane 02 Jul 2009 8:26 AM

WOOOOOOO HOOOOOOO, I'm so happy for the Jacksons.

Marilyn 02 Jul 2009 10:21 AM

OK now Gretchen Jackson has wanted a filly for a long time.  I know I know.  The photo with the dogs.  Well that is probably what they will do IMO BUT how about "Barbaretta Jackson"  ♥

Have a safe, healthy and painless pregnency LVR and we all love you.  You are one fine mare.  One fine family and the legacy just continues to grow and grow.  Gee isn't that strange how fame does that?  :)

StardustyRose 02 Jul 2009 11:08 AM

Catherine-

"Very exciting to finally see a girl, but what would be even more exciting is if she came out not bay. What are the odds of that?"

(Very open to corrections of my dim recollections of genetics and color genetics in horses!)

OK, depending on Pedigree Query here (caveat), regarding Dynaformer, you get back into fourth generation (great, great grandparents) before you see any chestnuts and that's four out of sixteen by then. Looking at the progeny of Dynaformer, it's either bay or drkb/b, except for some gray which must come from the dam's side when it appears. He looks to be very consistent with bay or drkb/b progeny so I'm guess no recessive chestnut there.

With La Ville Rouge, her sire is a chestnut, his parents bay, and two of his grandparents chestnut, with only two more chestnuts in his great, great grandparents. (In pedigree lingo, I think this is 4x, but easier for others to comprehend his way) La Ville Rouge's dam line has one chestnut great grand parent, and two great great grand parents. There is a gray 4 generations back on the sire side and we don't see it anywhere else, so not considering it a factor in the Dynaformer/La Ville Rouge cross.

I don't remember all of my genetics from college biology, recessive/dominant, but the baby to be is most likely another bay, maybe dark brown.

I THINK that chestnut is recessive to bay and it would take two recessives meeting up to create chestnut.  If that's the case, Carson City's parents, Mr. Prospector and Blushing Promise each carry a recessive chestnut although they are listed as bay. Each of them has a parent who is chestnut.  So I'm guessing La Ville Rouge probably has a recessive chestnut color from her sire, since he seems to have had to have both recessives to be the chestnut he is and would always pass one on. La Ville Rouge has produced one chestnut, Holy Ground by Saint Ballado who is listed as blk/br. He has two chestnuts in the fourth, BUT, I think there is something about chestnut and black that will occasionally produce either of those colors.  Someone more versed in horse color genetics can chime in here! In that case La Ville Rouge must have passed on the recessive chestnut and somewhere from Saint Ballado came another recessive.(???)

However, in another horse breed well documented for generations, I've seen a chestnut foal produced that had people scratching their heads because anything chestnut was so, SO far back. No chance of "accidental" parents, sire was collected and mare AI right on the farm.

It may be that down the road, you could see some chestnuts from any of the "kids" crossed on a chestnut or a horse who carries a chestnut recessive, IF they got a recessive chestnut from La Ville Rouge.

So you just never know.  Odds are, another bay.  But whatever gender/color, good health to all.

(I know that it's "most likely" a filly, as quoted in the article, but as I've said before, surprises do happen)

Another interesting color study-

Secretariat:

www.pedigreequery.com/secretariat

Discovery in the third and Polymelian in the fourth are chestnuts. (Fifth is not indicated here but you can click on his parents and so forth to go further back if you want.  All depends on accuracy of pedigree query)

HorseFirst 02 Jul 2009 11:31 AM

diane, that is a pretty name. do we know yet what is the official name of babynor? my god keep this precious family in good health and with lots of love! carrots and mints too!

sandieh 02 Jul 2009 12:03 PM

Hey, why not just name her Serena? If it appears she is going to take after Dynaformer, other adjectives or nows can be added to it. I won't be specific as people might find it insensitive. But all you need to do is think Dynaformer and then think noun or adjective and you can figure it out for yourselves. Think Bewitched and you can probably figure out one moniker. :)

Kathy 02 Jul 2009 1:33 PM

That's great that she's having a filly and all, but they really need to stop breeding her to Dynaformer. What a waste! Remember Fair Play's wife, Man O' War's mother? Never another foal like him. There is rarely ever a repeat in foals.

Fast Lady 02 Jul 2009 2:05 PM

Sounds like Babynor will become Marcano, with emphasis on first syllable.  Going to miss calling him Babynor.  Would love to see some current pictures of the little man.

Right now, we weem to be in a blackout visually.  No rcent pics of Nic, Lentenor, nor Babynor.  Anyone have any???

Marigold 02 Jul 2009 4:06 PM

Hi FOB:) I think these blogs are the most fun, always so many positive comments on here. Much to celebrate:) Here's wishing for a healthy mare and new foal in 2010.

MtBFan(Still)-"She is still a very tiny filly"(@8 or 9cm)- too cute:)

I came across a large photo of Nicanor from Jan.in The NY Times(I actually still cut out newspaper articles/pictures of horses) He was looking out of his stall, head turned to the side and directly into the camera. Not to be disrespectful to him, but'precious'is the best way to describe the look on his face.

I imagined him to be thinking,"Hay guys, I know you are huge fans of my big brother, but I'm me; I'll do the best I can though." Even though these are just thoughts I had, I realized I couldn't expect too much of him, just because of the great Barbaro. From now on I'll appreciate him for who He is, no pressure or weight on his withers :)

My Juliet 02 Jul 2009 4:28 PM

Hello Everyone!!!!

It's all well and good that we all think the world of the Jacksons and all connected....but.....let's not get the "cart before the horse" so to speak...all the names are "interesting", but let's not forget, it is the Jacksons who ultimately will have the last word in naming this "little girl"...remember, it will not be until next year she will make her appearance...all good thoughts for her Mom for the months to come.

Now, I'm off my soap box!!!!!

Mary W., Honolulu 02 Jul 2009 5:05 PM

I know this is kinda off subject, but remember Nicanors barn mate, Ice Road (Unbridleds Song- Run Up The Colors by AP Indy?  Well Ice ran in the 7th race at Delaware Park on 06/22 in a 1 1/16 mile MSW and won in 1:44.9. He was discussed in early editions of this blog and when I got the Fair Hill newsletter this morning and saw he had broke his maiden, I just thought I would share with everyone. Hopefully his racing career is back on track now. Way to go Ice Road & Michael Matz !

Barbaro Lover 03 Jul 2009 4:33 PM

HorseFirst -

You are pretty close on your genetics. I've studied color genetics for years and am excited that the DNA of horse color is now mapped and we are able to understand much more about the mysteries of roans (the real ones, not the Jockey Club version), blacks ("true" as well as "washy" - good luck getting the Jockey Club to enter the 21st Century on that one!); the modifying genes that make bays into "mahogany bays" or "blood bays" or "black bays"; and dark liver chestnuts into "browns" oh my!

I can really get going on this. But to simplify: A grey (not roan - different genes)horse must have at least one grey parent Grey is a dominant modifier on any other color gene. Two bays can have a chestnut if both are carrying, and pass on, the recessive "red" gene which makes a chestnut/sorrel. Bay is dominant, so if there is even one bay gene from one of the parents, the offspring will be bay (or a flavor thereof). A chestnut is recessive and can only pass on that color gene, therefore two chestnuts can only have a chestnut (or a flavor thereof). Keep in mind that modifying genes can dilute chestnut color to palomino and cremello, or darken it to almost black (a true "brown" or "seal brown").

I truely wish the Jockey Club would get with it and recognize black, bay, chestnut, and grey correctly. I betcha there are no true roans in TBs just as there are none in Arabians. There are "rubianos" in Arabians which may look very much like roan, so a few TBs with the rubiano gene may also exist.

Secretariat? Those bay relatives were all carrying the recessive chestnut gene - and the "browns" were just that - not bay but very dark, almost black appearing chestnuts.

Sorry this is so off topic, but I couldn't help myself!

diastu 03 Jul 2009 5:30 PM

I've got an idea for the little filly. Why not name her for one of MJ's most famous songs? Why not call her Billie Jean?

LDP 03 Jul 2009 9:12 PM

I cannot understand the love affair with La Ville Rouge. She produced the unfortunate Derby winner Barbaro and she is now an icon. What exactly is driving these misguided emotions?  Every year a particular broodmare is crowned derby winning dam.  La Ville Rouge wore that crown in 2006. The fact that the derby winner she foaled was euthanized after his brave battle to overcome injuries does not make her worthy of this sort attention. Eight Belles was euthanized after her brave second in the derby, does her dam merit the same attention? Better Than Honor foaled back to back winners of a Triple Crown race, a feat that is unprecedented in thoroughbred racing. Better Than Honor made history, where is her fan club? Is she in presently foal and if so, is she carrying a colt or filly?

Guys, La Ville Rouge has done nothing exceptional and although we all loved Barbaro, there is no need for this misguided emotion.

Coldfacts 04 Jul 2009 7:55 AM

Whoohoo, How did I miss this?

So exciting!

RhondaH 04 Jul 2009 8:17 AM

I really believe the only reason everyone is carrying on about the filly's name is that we are currently going through a dry spell in regards to Nicanor.

I did notice an entry in a previous blog which made reference to Nicanor's size and weight.

Greg J.

You've seen Nicanor up close. Do you know about how tall he is? And is he pretty good sized?

Kind of interesting how last summer and fall that some people said Nicanor was another The Green Monkey and wouldn't amount to much. And now the sentiment from these same people is that Nicanor won't be much better than an allowance which is where he is now.

Someone mentioned, I believe it was JAJ that you don't want a horse that weighs a lot racing as they tend to have more injuries. And not to compare a Kentucky Derby winner with an allowance horse, but isn't Mine That Bird a rather diminutive race horse?

And hey, if he just an allowance horse, sobeit. He is still a whole lot better than so many other horses.  He still is #1 in my

book always.

Kathy 04 Jul 2009 9:12 AM

As far as genetics go, I think that all horses are either black or brown.  There are dilute factors, roaning factor, and the graying factor, but all start out as either black or brown.  Chestnut is a form of brown and bay is a form of black.  Therefore, the dark bay or brown really has to be one or the other, to be both is inconsistent.  However, it can be very difficult to tell the difference.

Springsmom83 04 Jul 2009 12:41 PM

congrats to all. hope mother and baby stay healthy and the birth is complication free.

christy tate 04 Jul 2009 7:50 PM

I am so glad to hear that they will get the little girl they always wanted....

Looking at the list of names (from the Jackson's hunting dog painting) I was wondering what is going on with "Margano" the little guy LVR gave birth to earlier this year?

Also according to the list this

foal will problem be named "Sereno"...I could be wrong...

missmissyd 05 Jul 2009 4:48 AM

Fast Lady....

With all due respect.  I believe you should let that decision be made by the Jackson's.  OK?  :)

StardustyRose 05 Jul 2009 11:55 AM

Hey Coldfacts.. La Ville Rouge is loved so much because she is the dam of all the Barbaro Brothers. I'm sorry if any of the dams you memtioned don't get this kind of attention. Maybe you could start a web site for them. All the followers of Barbaro will always pay hommage to LVR because she is part of the Barbaro family, as well as Dynaformer. We see this as a family. How long have you been reading the Barbaro's Brothers site? If you decide to continue, you are more than welcome but you will have to accept the love we share for the WHOLE family. If this bothers you then I suggest you go somewhere else. We are the Band of Barbaro's Brothers here. Like I said, you are WELCOME here and very much entitled to your opinions.

Lou in TX 05 Jul 2009 7:30 PM

Coldplay,..Yes she is in foal again and is expecting a FILLY. I thought you might have guessed that by the title of this blog. The Jackson's(the owners) are thrilled because they have been waiting for a filly since there are 3 brothers now. Nicanor, Lentenor and Babynor of whom they haven't named yet, but we surmise his name will be Marcano. The Jackson's have been using the names of the hounds in a portrait they have in their home. Hope this helps. WELCOME!!!

Lou in TX 05 Jul 2009 7:38 PM

La Ville Rouge is the best broodmare of all time! In communion with Dynaformer, the best sire ever, she gave birth to Barbaro, who was the champion to end all champions. She also begat Nicanor, who is this year's Breeder's Cup Classic winner for sure, and then Lentenor, who is a lock for the Triple Crown next year. And what can I say about Babynor? He will revolutionize horseracing as we know it! And finally, there is a filly on the way, who can carry on her dam's legacy and bear more champions for the Jacksons and Michael Matz, the greatest owners and trainer horseracing has ever known.

And Fans of Barbaro, the world has never seen such dedication and adoration as you have for Barbaro and his brothers, the most famous horseracing family known to mankind. Can one become a Fan of Fans of Barbaro? Because I'm right there!

I think I've figured out what it takes now to get posted on this forum.

Concerned Fan 05 Jul 2009 8:54 PM

This news brightened my day.  A filly

forthcoming at last.  Congratulations to the Jacksons, La Ville Rouge and Dynaformer.  A little happiness is such a good thing!

Ivy 77 05 Jul 2009 9:27 PM

Fast Lady-

Well, they might keep breeding to Dynaformer because the Dynaformer cross on Mr. Prospector bred dam sires can produce this (And Barbaro):

www.bloodhorse.com/.../gozzip-girl-zaps-doubters-in-american-oaks

As for Mahubah, no,lightening does not strike twice.  But she did not produce just lemons before or after Man O' War.  Masda, his sister, was considered very fast but tempermental.  She is the third dam of Assault. (Triple crown)

My Play won Jockey Club Gold Cup, Aqueduct Handicap and sire of Head Play.  If you study enough pedigrees, you'll be surprised at how often this brother of Man O' War does pop up.

Marguerite, dam of Gallant Fox, Triple Crown winner, also produced full brother Fighting Fox, no slouch on the track and both by Sir Gallahad III, and half-brother Petee-Wrack.

It's very hard to follow "lightening in a bottle"- ask Secretariat's full siblings!

Besides, if LVR does deliver a filly next year, perhaps they will consider another sire.  I think they probably like what they get with the current cross though.

I'm not a fan of Mr. Prospector but in the case of the progeny of LVR, it's getting further back and is not repeated in the cross with Dynaformer.  If another sire were to be considered, my pick would have been Rahy- but he was retired just recently.

HorseFirst 05 Jul 2009 9:47 PM

I love how they breed for full siblings to Barbaro, and I wish best of luck to the whole team, mama, papa, and the little ones(:

maggie 05 Jul 2009 10:05 PM

Kathy,

As long as the horse is evenly built throughout it doesn't matter the weight too much. Zenyatta i think i around 1200lbs, and thats a pretty good sized horse, Curlin was in that range too, and both are big horses. Curlin was thicker i think. As you can see Both Zenyatta and Curlin are built very well, differnet parts of their body fit togeather very well. Curlin was a thick horse, very heavy and muscular, but he had good thick strong bones in his legs to help support all that. What you don't want is a top heavy horse where they are very big on top, but as you go down you end up with little stick legs and deer hooves. We have a horse over at where i work that was like that. I heard she was very fast on the track, but never did much because she had fragile legs, and was always rushed back to races. Now, though she still is alive she has a bunch of skrews and plates in her legs. I hope this helps you understand how the weight vs soundness goes.

LDP 06 Jul 2009 8:59 AM

Thank you LDP,

A remark was made a few blogs back that Nicanor was scrawny. And if Zenyatta is over 16 hands high and I believe she is; and she is over 1200 pounds, why would someone call Nicanor scrawny? I am guessing Nicanor probably ways more than Zenyatta, but maybe not. The last few photos of Nicanor show him to be very muscular. Am I not looking at the photos correctly?

And at what weight does the horse community consider a horse overweight or underweight(scrawny)?

Kathy 06 Jul 2009 11:35 AM

FYI,

Custom for Carlos won the Jersey Shore Stakes(G3) at Monmouth on Sunday.  This is a follow up to his third place finish in the Swale Stakes(G2) on March 28, and he won an allowance race on May 29 at Churchill Downs.  For his young Career, He has 3 wins, 1 second, and 1 third and earning's of $196,090.  I am mentioning this because he is the Horse that beat Nicanor on March 7th by a length, Which was Nicanor's second race.

Kathy,

While I have seen Nicanor three times in person, I can't say exactly what his height and weight are, But if I had to make an educated guess?, I would say a little taller then 16 hands but not quite 17 hands, Maybe 16.3 Hands?(1 hand=4 inches, 16.3 hands=67 inches or 5'7"), His weight?, I really can't even guess, He is not the Biggest guy out there, But he is put together Perfectly, Very Muscular and Chiseled, Looks to have a very even balance to him, more so each time I see him...

Greg J. 06 Jul 2009 12:04 PM

Remember Nicanor's 2nd race in March where he finished second by one length behind Custom For Carlos at Gulfstream going 7/8 of a mile?  Well, on Sunday Custom For Carlos became a graded stakes winner, winning the 7 furlong Grade 3 Jersey Shore Stakes for 3-yr-olds at Monmouth Park by over 6 lengths.  Congrats to Custom For Carlos.  This victory flatters Nicanor, too.

helsbelles 06 Jul 2009 1:52 PM

Custom For Carlos made Nicanor look even better with his win this weekend. Also iI think it's great to see a filly on the way

Mel S 06 Jul 2009 4:16 PM

Custom for Carlos (Nicanor placed a game second to him in his second start) flattered Nicanor this weekend with a 6+ length victory in the Jersey Shore Stakes and a 106 Beyer.

You are so right - only two "base" color genes, black(dominant) and red (recessive). Let's not even go into true White (not albino). But I was trying to simplify and probably missed the boat. Modifier genes, both dominant ones and recessive ones, make "black" into various shades of bay, and of course black itself, and make "red" into various shades of chestnut/sorrel. And you are also right - gee, why can't the Jockey Club get this - that a horse can be dark bay, or brown, but not both since the former comes from the "black" gene and the latter comes from the "red". The modifier genes create greys, roans, duns, palominos, rubianos, etc. and also create patterns like paint, pinto, and appaloosa. See, you got me started again. To focus on FOB, BOBB, BBOB, and FOBF: LVR carries the recessive red gene since she has a chestnut offspring. I am suspicious about Dynaformer and want to do some searching to see if he has ever sired a true brown, or very dark liver chestnut out of a chestnut mare. If so, he is also carrying the red gene and has dark offspring because of the modifiers he carries. Ah, but for a little DNA sample!

diastu 06 Jul 2009 9:51 PM

I believe bay is determined by the agouti gene which is seperate from the chestnut gene.  Chesnut is indeed recessive, which means the horse must be homozygous (inherit a chestnut gene from both parents) for the chestnut gene and also can not have the E (agouti - must be ee to be chestnut).  Agouti is seperate and related to black.  I have a chestnut colt produced by a brown/bay stallion out of a chestnut mare.  The sire's sire was chestnut and where my horse's sire got his chestnut gene (and the bay gene had to come from the dam).  Grey is indeed dominant and any horse that gets one grey gene from either parent will be gray.  However, if the horse got (for instance) a chestnut gene from the other parent, the grey (heterozygous for gray because it has one chestnut gene) can throw chestnut if crossed with another horse carrying a chestnut gene (could even be another heterozygous grey).

Kat 07 Jul 2009 12:57 AM

I think they should name this new little sibling-to-be Selena (who, unless I totally messed this up, was the Roman goddess of the moon??). It's the feminine of it's latin counterpart Seleno, as someone else said. And since the new little sibling to be is seemingly a filly, that would make a lot of sense.

k.w.j...n.c., I think Calypso Rouge sounds like an even better name!! I like it when fillies are named more after their mamas than their daddies.

I, too, am wondering whether this little filly will continue the trend of carrying on mom's looks and personality or if she'll get more of her daddy's looks and personality... guess we'll just have to wait and see!!

Zenyatta 07 Jul 2009 8:28 AM

Kathy,

Just a follow up on the height of Nicanor, This is what Mr. Matz said about 9 months ago on Nicanor's size, "“He’s still growing. He’s got to be at least 16.2-16.3 hands. He’s not as long as Barbaro was, so he is really a big boy. The whole family was that way, they are just late to mature.”

So, That was 9 months ago, That should give you a better idea regarding his Height...

Greg J. 07 Jul 2009 1:11 PM

Wow! :o

I love Barbaro and his tragic death hit me! Now that his sister could carry a legend...man thats awesome. :D:D

Kanderz 07 Jul 2009 3:09 PM

Kathy,

I think the comments of Nicanor being "scrawny" were more that he was underweight.  Since those comments were made (and I was one who agreed the pictures looked as if he had lost weight), he has filled out and is just glowing.  That said, I haven't seen any recent pictures.

Zenyatta looks like a huge mare, much larger than Nicanor.  She is massive.  Nicanor will continue to grow for a few years yet, maybe not so much in height but in bulk especially since he is a colt.

Based on the pictures I've seen, I doubt Nicanor is 16.3, which is a really big horse for a Thoroughbred.  Most Thoroughbreds are around 16.0 hands.  A few have been around 17.0 hands, but that is rare and really, not very desirable.

JAJ 07 Jul 2009 7:37 PM

I believe that there was mention of the name Serano as one of the hounds in the painting, and that it had been skipped since it's already registered.  Maybe the Jacksons will revisit that name as "Serena" which would be fitting for a filly.

Someone else made mention of Calypsa (as opposed to Calypso)... It's a pretty option, too.

A Pinch of Luck 07 Jul 2009 9:20 PM

How about Calypso La Ville? Does anyone besides me like that name?

Just thought I'd ask. I like Rouge to but thought her Mom's first name was also good.

The name of the hound is Sereno not Seleno. Not meaning to be critical but thought maybe you got the name wrong. If not, my mistake.

Did you read the name Fillynor for our new little filly? Think that is sooo cute. At least until we get a name for Babynor.

Lou in TX 07 Jul 2009 11:22 PM

Kathy,

In the photo's i've seen of Nic he looks maybe around 16.1 or 16.2. Zenyatta is 17 hands i believe, and as i said weighs right around the 1200lbs area. She is massive. I doubt Nicanor is that big yet, i don't think even Curlin was that big as a three year old and we all saw how muscular he was, the horse was huge. Also Nicanor has longer legs if i remeber right, which will give him the appearence of being taller and sometimes thinner than he really is. One of my thoroughbreds, i have two is leggy and thinner looking, kinda like a big arab from some angles. He is 16.2 and probably weighs right around 1150lbs or so. Right now he's looking like a stick of dynamite, which isn't bad unless your trying to ride him. My other thoroughbred is put togeather much differently. Like Majec, he is a very long horse, but he is a massive thoroughbred, some ppl have told me he at times looks like a tall QH. He is the Mike Tyson of horses, meaning he is massive. He is only 16.1, maybe slightly taller. If you look at Majec vs Tray apart, Tray looks bigger, just because he is so massive. Put them next to each other, to me it's still close but i can tell Majec is taller, though he is more refined looking, and looks even thinner when standing next to my bear, that being Tray. As you can see how a horse is put togeather can throw off your porspective height from what their actual height is.

Hello La Ville Rouge!

Congratulations to you, my dear, for carrying your very first filly!

I am eager to see her.

Hopefully, she becomes a "super filly" and wins plenty of races just like Rachel Alexander.

Lots of love to you!

Lou In Texas,

Dont ya think that MR&Mrs Jackson wants to carry on the "Rouge-Dynaformer" bloodline in the unborn filly and naming her after the Rouge... would be the way to go...kinda like.. carry on the tradition..whatcha think ...

where are the pictures....

Congratulations to La Ville Rouge and Dynaformer - the great parents of Barbaro and his 3 brothers!!!

Also, I am happy for the Jacksons - a baby sister,

finally for Barbaro's brothers!!!

It will be a wonderful day to see LVR and her filly nuzzling up to her.......best wishes to all.

Dynaformer offspring had a great weekend of winners from the UK to USA what a horse Dynaformer is.....its a shame he is 24 years....

Ragsy 10 Jul 2009 8:11 AM

Hey Ragsy...Rouge is fine with me. No objection but you know? The Jacksons will name her whatever they want so I guess all these suggestions are really for nought. I don't imagine they even read this blog. How do you like Fillynor for our little filly?

I'll try and post some pics of CHD one of these days. Greg J gave me instructions so maybe I can do it. Never done that before. My daughter was insistant that she not be any of them so I'll have to pick & choose. Church Hill is awesome!! The statue of Barbaro is unbelievable. The tour we took at night I can't even describe. They were getting ready for their "First Night of Night Racing". Would love to be there right now except they are through racing until the 1st of Nov.

I'm a little worried about this race Nicanor is enterd in on the 18th. Some really good competition. Just want him to come home healthy and happy. I'll definitely be watching. Nicanor #1!!

Lou In Texas:

yes, you are right...bet CHD's was wonderful...glad to hear that their night races go until Nov. that means I may just go myself...

Nicanor will do just fine this upandcomming Saturday..feel it in my bones....but, even if not, he will forever be #1 with me...win or lose Nicanor will be adored and loved...

How About Gretchen's Gift?

meleah 14 Jul 2009 8:21 PM

How exciting!!! She is going to be gorgeous....and spoiled! a Dynaformer princess!!

Maureen 14 Jul 2009 8:27 PM

JAJ, Dynaformer is 17 hands. Eight Belles was 17 hands. Lot's of thoroughbreds are 17 hands. I think Unbridled Song is 17 hands. Some stallions throw size more then others.

Zenyatta is pretty close to 17 if not there, and she IS solid, like a brick house. I watched her in the paddock before her last race and could not believe I was looking at a mare. I think she's at least as big, if not bigger then Curlin.
