Exclusive! Video of Nicanor and Lentenor at Fair Hill

Below is a video clip taken of Nicanor and Lentenor at Fair Hill Training Center. The video, which has no audio, was filmed July 9 by Alex Cutadean (aka "Stable Boy") of The Blood-Horse Video Production department. Trainer Michael Matz is shown on the video holding Lentenor, on right, near the beginning of the video.

We know many of you have been asking for photos or videos of these two horses, and Alex was at Fair Hill to do some other video work and was able to get this exclusive video. So a big shoutout to Alex and to Jackie Duke, of Eclipse Press, who helped arrange the video.

Thanks you one and all. You have made my dreary, drabby month so much better. The boys are just gorgeous. I just love seeing them.

Go Nicanor Go. You can do it.

Lentenor, mind the big guy and you'll be racing sooner than you think.

This is a lovely piece of film and thank you so much for arranging to film it and then for sharing it! I loved the earlier comment about the "family that grazes together..."

Abigail from Canada 16 Jul 2009 10:10 AM

Goodness Nic has filled out very well.  I didn't notice it so much until this video seeing him next to his baby brother.  Glad they took that extra time with him to let him fill out and grow up.

RachelSatterfield 16 Jul 2009 10:11 AM

OMG!!!! Make my day!! It is all joy to see the boys together. Not to look a "gift horse" iin the mouth, but if we could just squeeze mom and babynor in the picture....sincere thanks for todays smile! I am so proud of these guys! good luck saturday nicky, and lennie, darling, you are nearly as big as your brother. what a treasure for fair hill to share with all of us! and of course, sincere gratitude to roy and gretchen jackson!

sandieh 16 Jul 2009 10:13 AM

Oh, my!! They are just stunning.  You can really see the difference in their physiques.  Nicanor has REALLY hunked out, which was obvious when I saw him at Delaware Park last month.

Lentenor is gorgeous and comparing the two shows he has lots of growing up and filling out to do yet - but watch out!!

Love this video!

GO NICANOR - be safe Saturday!

:)

JudyPA 16 Jul 2009 10:18 AM

I wonder if they know that they are brothers!!!

katie~vic 16 Jul 2009 10:26 AM

Thank you to everyone involved - the video is simply stunning.  I can't believe how much Nicanor has filled out - it's wonderful to watch the progress of both of these horses.  I know we're all sorry Rosie is not riding Nicanor on Saturday - but she is riding 7 out of 10 races on Saturday at Delaware Park (3 mounts for MM)I for one wish her the very best.  Saturday will be a great test for Nicanor - I for one am sure he's up to it - he's learned so much, namely how to win. I'm sure he's going to want to continue.  Let's just pray for a safe trip - the remainder will work out.  Thanks again Bloodhorse, the Jacksons, MM, Fair Hill and everyone involved for sharing this wonderful video.

Barb C 16 Jul 2009 10:33 AM

Thank you so much for this precious video. The brothers are so handsome and regal.  I can't believe how big Nicanor has gotten. He has really filled out.  He looks like a man.  He should have no problems Sat.  I'm praying for him.  I remember when Lentenor was born.  He was the cutest little foal and now look at him he's almost as big as his brother. A million thanks to Bloodhorse, the Jacksons and Mr. Matz for sharing the brothers with us.

Chris K 16 Jul 2009 10:35 AM

Wow, that was fabulous!

Deby 16 Jul 2009 10:41 AM

Wonderful way to start the day!!  Lentenor is gorgeous, as is Nicanor!!  Great to see them out enjoying the grass together.  It would be interesting to see if they ever work together or even race in the same race (which would be pretty awesome, in my opinion).

Adrienne 16 Jul 2009 10:44 AM

Thank you so much!!  they are beautiful horses - love seeing them together - you can see that Lentenor is still growing - he looks so much like big brother Barbaro.  I really appreciate you taking the time to send this video - we love any information or pictures we can get on this wonderful family of horses.  Go Nicanor on Sat.!!!!  Be safe

Joanne 16 Jul 2009 10:45 AM

Karen in Texas  Yes I do I have always wondered that.  He claims he is so tight with barbaro andwanted his legacy to continue.  If i was in hs shoes i would do whatever it took to giv the legacy of Barbaro a least a chance that would include Nicanor.

Jacki(Fan of Nicanor 16 Jul 2009 10:58 AM

Beautiful, you made my day!

Thanks

DaisyMae 16 Jul 2009 11:00 AM

They are beautiful horses! So magnificent! Hopefully everyone believes there are no stupid questions, but I was just wondering if they realize their kinship. Do they know they are brothers? Just wondering. What georgeous animals and what a beautiful facility.

CLee 16 Jul 2009 11:16 AM

I just love Nicanor's face with that big, interesting blaze. Lentenor looks like he maturing in size sooner than he's older brothers did. They would look identical if Lentenor had a blaze(well Nicanor is ALOT bigger than Lentenor right now!). Thanks you so much for this video, it really pulls on our heart strings.

HopeforaTripleCrown 16 Jul 2009 11:29 AM

Aaaaaaaaaaah I am just speechless.  They are just the most adorable horses in the world.  Thanks Ron and Alex for making this.  Be SAFE on Saturday Nicky Nocks.  We all love you and Lentenor my gosh how you have grown!  Very well mannered horses.  This made me smile.  :)

StardustyRose 16 Jul 2009 11:38 AM

They look so much alike next to eachother. They both look great! Nicanor defenitly looks like he's coming into himself.

Jess 16 Jul 2009 11:40 AM

spitting images of barbaro!! i love these boys!! And man is Lentenor getting bigger!!!!

Rachel of AZ 16 Jul 2009 11:45 AM

warren..

This is only my personal opinion but I believe that Edgar is not riding Nicky cause he may want to be too careful with him and hence not be able to run him normally.  I truly believe that the injury with Barbaro changed him forever and he could never ever handle a repeat.  Just my thoughts though.  I also know that Michael Matz will not put anyone on his horses that are not very good jockeys.  These horses are in good people hands and always will be.  :)

Greg J.  Wasn't Edgar riding Nicky when he grabbed that quarter?  I can't remember.  That would have scared me to death if I would have been Edgar.

Go Nicky.  We all love and adore you and want you to win but most of all to just be safe all the way around.  ♥

StardustyRose 16 Jul 2009 11:45 AM

Stardust,

Yes, Edgar was on Nicanor when he grabbed his quarter in his first race.

You also hit the nail on the head regarding Edgar and Nicanor.  Edgar was so close to Barbaro, and after Nicanor grabbed his quarter, I am sure Edgar was nervous about anything ever happening to Nicanor, Especially if he was riding him, I just think it is too emotionally hard for him to ride any of Barbaro's brothers, And I don't think you will ever see him on any of them in the future(IMO)...

Greg J. 16 Jul 2009 12:04 PM

Jacki(Fan of Nicanor)---I'm not sure what you're referring to in your July 16, 10:58 A.M. post. Are you sure you are replying to me? Maybe another poster?

Karen in Texas 16 Jul 2009 12:06 PM

I love this, I love this, I love this!  I echo everyone's else's praise of these two brothers!  Thanks SO MUCH for bringing these two guys into our living rooms!  I enjoyed it immensely.  They both have the stamp of Barbaro upon them.  Good racing luck to Nicanor this weekend and for Lentenor whenever he starts this year (hopefully).

Thank you for making my day!

Beverly 16 Jul 2009 12:28 PM

Thank you Blood Horse, for the video and thank you, Mr. Matz, for taking time out of your schedule for the photo-op of these two brothers.

I actually think there are  differences in them but there is also a years difference and it's hard to tell everything from just a video.  My first response is two different types but horse judging is subjective if it is anything!

Loved to see the swing in Nicanors hips when he walked.  Something you look for in dressage horses.  Now if he'll just relax more when racing and use his back like that on the track!

Nicanor is showing more physical maturity and looking more stallion all the time. I hope he has the mile and a quarter in him for this next race. Safe trip boy.

If he's going to run in front, may he emulate Precious Passion:

www.bloodhorse.com/.../presious-passion-smashes-course-record-in-un

DO watch that video!

FYI, if Prado was caught being too careful (As in afraid they'll get hurt) riding his horses, he'd be out of a job soon.  Sentimentality has no place on the race track and babying Barbaro's brothers doesn't either.  Prado is a professional and should be treated as one. Things happen every day in racing and if Prado was affected by every one of those events, regardless of the lineage of the horses he's on, he wouldn't be riding any more.

There are a zillion better reasons why Prado is not riding Nicanor, including prior commitments, he's not a good fit for the horse, his schedule is not lining up for Matz to use him much, whatever. Or maybe Prado is just tired of the rationales people come up for why he's not riding Nicanor or aware of the converse- the hazing he would get if he could not win on one of the brothers, never mind it might be the horse instead of Prado.

HorseFirst 16 Jul 2009 12:28 PM

Thank You to everyone involved in obtaining this video for all to see these marvelous horses...

Nic and Len are simply awesome to look at WOW....May the Angels of Heaven... protect this family of horses and soar Nicanor across the finish line ahead of all horses saturday....love this video.....stunning......

Oh how wonderful!  They have such a regal bearing, and great conformation.  Thank you, Thank you, to Michael Matz, to Mr. and Mrs. Jackson, Fair Hill, Blood Horse, and all involved for these pictures of Barbaro's beautiful brothers.

Gloria Davis 16 Jul 2009 12:40 PM

Thanks for the great video. I can truly see that the legacy of Barbaro does live on. That is great for us lovers of the sport. To be continued...

Tamara G 16 Jul 2009 12:51 PM

Great video.  Thanks for sharing!  Anyone going to be at Colonial Downs on Saturday for the Virginia Derby?

Mel Graeff 16 Jul 2009 12:55 PM

What a great start to the day!  The Jackson boys are magnificent. Nic is starting to have Barbaro's proportions and stride.  God speed Saturday, handsome dude!  Lentenor looks so much like BBH-he exudes Star Power also.  Thanks so much for sharing this unforgetable video!

Bonnie3 16 Jul 2009 12:56 PM

All I can say is "WOW!!"

Stacy 16 Jul 2009 12:56 PM

Has anyone noticed that right hind leg of Nicanor's?  I wouldn't want to be standing next to it when he's agitated!  He kicked out at least twice with that leg when getting his blinkers on/adjusted his last race (watch Greg's paddock video) and here it looks like the flies were bothering him sometimes - he stamps that right hind leg several times.  Just an interesting observation!

JudyPA 16 Jul 2009 1:14 PM

Michael Matz was very gracious to allow us to come video tape these two.  We were there shooting for an upcoming conformation DVD that does not feature either of the brothers, but does feature Mr. Matz and other horses from his stable.

In response to Karen from PA, just being around his operation for a few hours I realized that Mr. Matz does expect excellence from everyone working for him.  At the same time, he is an incredibly friendly and generous individual.  I very much enjoyed my time at Fair Hill.

Stable Boy 16 Jul 2009 1:14 PM

These boys are just GORGEOUS! They look so much like Barbaro. I am impressed with their beautiful grooming, and I love the European-style blunt cut tails. Thanks to all that made this video possible.

So refreshing. This blog sure beats the heck out of all the Zenyatta v. RA stuff on the other blogs. Enough already!

Soldier Course 16 Jul 2009 1:15 PM

Thanks for the video of the two colts together!  I saw two relaxed colts, exceptionally groomed and enjoying their time out.  It was evident that their handlers were relaxed along with them.  I really appreciate handlers that keep the horses under control without constantly picking at them by jerking the chain.  The Barbaro brothers are gorgeous!

Dianne 16 Jul 2009 1:18 PM

Look At Lentenor WOW what a horse!

meleah 16 Jul 2009 1:42 PM

IT MAKES ME MISS BARBARO....AH WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN!  ANYWAY...THESE BROTHERS ARE GORGEOUS!!  GO NICKY ON SATURDAY!!!  LENTENOR YOU ARE A BIG FELLA...LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR FIRST RACE!!

Soldier Course,

I agree this blog does provide a good get away, it's much more positive. I don't post as much on her, i just like reading all the positive. It can be very relaxing after all the firestorms on some of the other blogs. The brothers do look fantastic, MY GOD, i can't believe how much nicanor has acually filled out. He looks stunning.

LDP 16 Jul 2009 2:16 PM

Michael Matz has lived an amazing life.

What are the odds of all of the following events happening to one person? -

Surviving a major airplane crash

Winning the Kentucky Derby

Representing USA in the Olympics

Training the most inspiring equine tro0per in the history of Thoroughbred racing, Barbaro

Statistically impossible.

Soldier Course 16 Jul 2009 2:20 PM

Well, what a start to my day!!! This is better than my first cup of coffee. My eternal thanks to all who filmed this and then got it posted. You can definitely see the Dynaformer -Carson City sire lines in both of these magnificent creatures. When you look at the surroundings they are stabled in, it is no wonder both are growing and doing so well. The ability for both of them to have calm, fresh air, and green grass make for a happy healthy horse.  My prayers will be with Nic on Sat. While I hope for a win, I just pray he will have a clean good trip. Winning will be a bonus for all.

God speed Nic.

I HAVE A QUESTION   WHEN NICANOR INJURED HIS LEG IN HIS FIRST RACE, WAS THAT THE SAME LEG BARBARO BROKE WHEN HE WAS INJURED?

Jackie(Fan of Nicanor 16 Jul 2009 2:47 PM

I just wanted to say thank you for the video of both colts.  I wonder if this video makes history?  Has any siblings of horse racing ever been video taped together?  It is great to see the beginning of the Barbaro dynasty, and I bet he is very proud.  I also give credit to the dynaformer and LaVille Rouge they make beautiful babies together.  I can't wait to see the filly when she is born, or the baby from this year.  I have a funny feeling they are all going to be great at whatever they do.

thanks

PS.  Good Luck Saturday Nicky

Thanks so much for the video.  The brothers have grown into such gorgeous horses.  Congrats to all of the connections that care for all in the family.  A filly will be a nice complement.  Good Luck to Nic and safe racing for all in Sat. race.

Janet, CA 16 Jul 2009 3:14 PM

Not that this is important, but just noticed a funny glitch on the blogs. Twice I have submitted a comment containing the word "trouper". When published, it comes out "trooper". I know there's no one spell checking, so this is odd.

Soldier Course 16 Jul 2009 3:15 PM

Aren't we the lucky ones!!!!!

Wow, thanks to Mr Matz and bloodhorse for this marvelous treat. It doesn't get any better.

Mr and Mrs Jackson, you're a true friend of horse racing fans everywhere. Words alone cannot express our thanks for how kind and gracious you have been with your wonderful family of horses.

TerriV 16 Jul 2009 3:20 PM

First, my thanks to Alex C, Jackie D and Michael M for sharing this lovely 'visit' with the Jackson brothers.  Now that's a real treat!

So peaceful and quiet and such a beautiful setting for the brothers to enjoy.  And, they're both so handsome!  First time I've seen the two together like this and it's a wonderful sight.

Again, thanks to all who made this treat possible.

Thanks to Stableboy for getting this video for all of the Band of Barbaro Brother Fans and of course, others. Also to Mr Matz for letting Stableboy get this remarkable video while he was there.

Nicanor, we all wish you good luck on Saturday but most important, come home healthy and happy. Hopefully you'll feel all our love running with you. And your big brother running along side you.

They are as handsome as their mother La Ville is beautiful!

Tracy 16 Jul 2009 4:13 PM

Edgar Prado is the regular rider of Take The Points, and for the most part Todd Pletcher.  As some of you may know, this horse was entering into the Triple Crown this year as a legit runner, with sizeable earnings, and multiple places in Graded Stakes leading up to the Kentucky Derby which he ultimately did not run in, skipped the Belmont too after a poor showing in the Preakness.  Take The Points did run 4th in the Santa Anita Derby (GI), 2nd in the Sham Stakes (GIII), and won back to back in an Allowance and Maiden Special Weight, on the biggest East and West coast tracks.

Truth of the matter is that just because Edgar rode Barbaro doesn't mean he'll be on top of every "brother" or "sister", and for many, many, many reasons.  Though I doubt a jockey with the caliber of Edgar is timid to ride any horse, and if anything he would LOVE nothing more in his life to ride another Barbaro if given the chance.  So, please let's not lose focus here folks.  The only pressure on a man like Edgar is to win on siblings that aren't Barbaro.  The mishap at the Kentucky Derby only makes jockeys like Prado hungrier to do better, not the opposite.  Fear is not an option at this level of riding, ever.

Good luck Edgar, you deserve the best.

Take The Points 16 Jul 2009 4:30 PM

Thanks for sharing the "boys"! They certainly have their father's size and their momma's good looks. Beautiful colts.

PJ 16 Jul 2009 4:41 PM

Ron, you are awesome!  What ever we ask you try to get.  Thank you Alex and Jackie, the video has been worth the wait. The guys are so handsome. I did not realize Nicanor was so huge. Seeing them side by side you realize what a years worth of growth can do for a horse.  Yes, I do wonder if they know they are brothers and what they would be saying to each other at this time.  These horses are the picture of health and look very content.  Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!

Such handsome boys! What a thrill to see them in the very capable hands of Michael Matz. I am so happy for their connections they must be very proud!

Candace Serviss 16 Jul 2009 5:48 PM

Great video! Thank you so much for keeping us up to date. Some of us won't get coverage of the races, so these videos mean a lot!

Barbara W 16 Jul 2009 5:54 PM

Greg J.

I totally agree with you on the brothers with Edgar.  Prado developed such an inner bond with Barbaro that is out of the norm for a jockey.  It makes nothing but sense.  At least we can thank Edgar from the bottom of our hearts for saving Barbaro that day.  Not a lot of jockeys would have been able to do that IMO.

sandieh..  Yeah it would be horrible if Prado got hurt with one of these guys.  I believe that if that were to occur (don't think he will ride any of them though just as Greg said), he would be done with riding.  I really do not believe that he could go through that again.  That is why it really trips me out that he is NEXT to Nicky in this race.  That in itself is really a trip.  At least we know that Edgar will control Take the Points to not run into Nicky.  Gotta love him.  ♥

StardustyRose 16 Jul 2009 6:28 PM

Thank you for sharing this.  They are spectacular.  The spirit of Fair Hill itself came through the screen.  I am so happy that NICANOR and LENTINOR are there.  How beautiful!  God speed them safely to their destiny. Our beloved BARBARO is loved and missed, but there is a quiet comfort in knowing that he was there too.

Otherlyn 16 Jul 2009 6:31 PM

I need to add this.  Those of us that were there from the very beginning with Barbaro and Prado know exactly what I am talking about.  Some jockeys acually have a true love and a heart for more than just the purse money.  Prado is one of those people.  :)  Edgar we love you and we know that you dearly loved and still love Barbaro.  ♥

StardustyRose 16 Jul 2009 6:33 PM

WOW!  Bloodhorse and Stable Boy - you rock!!  Of course, my gratitude to the Jacksons and the incredible Michael Matz for allowing this glimpse into such a peaceful, lovely moment with the colts.  Thank you!!

Good luck Saturday Nic, come home safe!

Just Awesome!!  They are such a spectacular line of breeding. It soothes and inspires the soul watching them grow and progress.  Look forward to seeing them everytime you share the pictures and videos.  I can only imagine what it would feel like to be standing there with them.  They give off such strength and comfort.

Thank you so much for the video, it is unbelievable that you were able to get the Bro's together and it has made my day.  I must say that by eyeing it a "few" times that Lentenor is really getting bigger by the day though think he has a bit of filling out to do.  What can I say about Nicky-Knocks, he is gorgeous.  Fly like the wind on Saturday and stay safe and show all these people how fabulous you are. Please, please have a replay of the race ASAP after it is over since it is the only way I am going to see it.  Can't wait.  For you going down for the race, pictures, videos and your observations.

To Alex and Bloodhorse thank you from the bottom of my heart for providing us this wonderful video of the Jackson brothers.

Nicanor is sheer perfection. His confident stride reminds me so much of Barbaro. I wish him nothing but the best on Saturday.

Lentenor shares his dam's kind eye and intelligent face. What a joy it is to watch him grow.

I commend Michael Matz on his care of both colts.  They look spectacular.

Thank you Alex!

We all love this family so much!

Does anyone know if the stands at the BreyerFest at the Kentucky Horse Park sell retired Breyer models? I'm going Saturday and I really want a Barbaro model but its retired.

Nicole from OH 16 Jul 2009 9:27 PM

Wonderful clip of the two brothers! I especially enjoyed that look in Lentenor's eye at 1:25. He's "thinking" ahead.

Thanks!

Anja 16 Jul 2009 9:49 PM

Wow, thery are STUNNING!!  Can't wait to see you run Saturday Nicanor!!  I'll be there!!

Barbaro4ever 16 Jul 2009 9:56 PM

Nothing short of spectacular...what a rare treat to see the boys together! Many thanks.

ctgreyhound 16 Jul 2009 10:09 PM

Boy, the little boys are all grown up.  I've never seen more beautiful tails, except of course on Big Brother Barbaro.  God Bless these beautiful colts.  Good luck Nicanor!!!

Amy A 16 Jul 2009 10:14 PM

Also, Thank You Greg for video of Nicanor :)

Cassidy 16 Jul 2009 10:27 PM

It was nice to see Barbaro's brothers together in that film.

Fair Hill Training Center is a beautiful place. A friend of mine lives next to it.

Don 16 Jul 2009 11:22 PM

I am speechless at their beauty! thanks so much to everyone involved in the making of the video. I am so nervous about Nickys next race. Excited but shaking inside. A good nervous(is there such a thing?). I am a lifelong fan of all the Barbaro siblings.

gammyp6 16 Jul 2009 11:37 PM

Indeed, thank you for this lovely video. You don't often get to see full siblings side by side and it's quite remarkable how similar they appear.

Nicanor looks fit and ready for his race this weekend, and Lentanor looks very relaxed and happy.

Fair Hill is a beautiful facility!

nonnonheinous 16 Jul 2009 11:37 PM

Having just this week read Edgar's heartrending book on such a gutsy Barbaro I was so pleased to find this fascinating video of Nicanor and Lentenor.I will now be watching racing results for both these magnificently turned out colts in the future.Good Luck to all concerned.

Francis B, New Zealand 17 Jul 2009 12:19 AM

wow, this actually brought tears to my eyes. i really couldnt help but think there was one guy missing :(

TatiTheGreat 17 Jul 2009 12:53 AM

many thanks to those who help bring all the pic's,video to us!!Thank You

tc01 17 Jul 2009 7:10 AM

StardustyRose and others,

Prado did not do anything particularly heroic when he pulled up Barbaro.  Any jockey would have.  Most jockeys would have done everything possible to keep the horse as safe as possible until the outriders arrived to help, even at great personal risk to themselves.  It is preposterous to think that Prado isn't riding Nicanor because of some fear of something catastrophic happening when riding the horse.

He's a jockey.  A good jockey.  His goal is to win races.  Is he capable of a bit of "race riding" against Nicanor--you bet he is.

JAJ 17 Jul 2009 8:31 AM

love to you saturday, sweet nicky, there will be a lot of angels watching you. we will watch with our love and wishes as you round the bend and head for home safely. horsey hugs, darling!

HORSENUT23-i would love to have those "bookends" in my barn anytime!

sandieh 17 Jul 2009 8:43 AM

Thanks so much for the video! I love that they have stayed together! We love these videos so keep them coming!

SQ 17 Jul 2009 8:55 AM

To Nicole from OH:  Yes, there will be many vendors in the arena selling all kinds of retired models at Breyerfest.  Good luck with finding a Barbaro model and have lots of fun!  Say hello to the gorgeous guys in the Hall of Champions for me!

txbarbfan 17 Jul 2009 9:18 AM

One person wrote,..." I wonder if they know they are brothers"....I wonder if they know who their brother was. They have some big shoes to fill. They look a lot like Brabaro,....this video also brought tears to my eyes. Thank You for this wonderful video!

KKAppaloosas 17 Jul 2009 9:41 AM

I agree JAJ, Edgar Prado is a very good jockey, but he is on the competition tomorrow and so I for one hope his horse doesn't listen to him during the race. He can be a very good again and win all of his races on Sunday.

Kathy 17 Jul 2009 10:25 AM

Nicanor is a scratch,

Mr. Matz said He pulled something in his left Hind Leg...

Still waiting for more info, I pray he is Ok.....

Greg J. 17 Jul 2009 10:28 AM

Nicanor was just scratched from the Virginia Derby - all I know is that is was characterized as a "physical issue."

Susan 17 Jul 2009 10:31 AM

Oh no... hot off the press.. Nic's a scratch for the Derby...

JVA 17 Jul 2009 10:34 AM

Nicanor may have hurt his Left Rear Leg, while training this AM. He will most likely be scratched from tomorrows, Virginia Derby. Sorry Folks if this turns out to be true.

Clearwater Charlie 17 Jul 2009 10:38 AM

Wow, awesome video, Thank You So Much! You can really tell the difference a year makes in the growth of these two, Nicky looks huge(as well he is lol) I am sure Lentinor will go through that same growth spurt, bet it runs in the genes lol as Dynaformer is a monster sized(17) horse :) thank you so much for the updates as well, I am anxiously awaiting the stakes tommorrow :)

Stephanie 17 Jul 2009 10:42 AM

Oh, no. I hope Nicanor's injury is not serious. Thank goodness Mr. Matz caught this before the Virginia Derby. I hope we get more details soon. A good time to say thanks again for this wonderful video. Nicanor is in our prayers.

Soldier Course 17 Jul 2009 11:31 AM

I can't believe how big Lentenor is!!! He looks almost the same size as Nicanor. And I can't believe Nicanor is scratched and was hurt. I hope it's not a serious injury. Unbelievable. I was in shock when I got the news alert about Nicanor. Prayers and wishes for a speedy reovery and hoping it is not a serious injury. Too many 3 yr olds getting hurt this year....almost like they are all jinxed.

BigMommaLovesHorses 17 Jul 2009 11:50 AM

JAJ..

I mostly agree with you but not ANY jockey would have been able to hold Barbaro like that.  That took some real skills to leap off of that horse and stop him on a dime.  THEN to keep him calm.  No not ANY jockey. I don't mean that there are not any jockeys that can do it.  I mean that there are a select few that are that good.  :) There are jockeys that would not have been able to have done that not because they are not good jockeys but because of the experience and knowning exactly how to deal with things IMO.  I believe Edgar has gone beyond many.

StardustyRose 17 Jul 2009 12:24 PM

Finally!  What I've been wantingto see the bro's together for ages!  Beautiful!

nannie284 17 Jul 2009 2:49 PM

JAJ is correct.  Prado is a decent jockey and did his job.  Most other jockeys would have done the same. It is not unusual in the least.

yawn 17 Jul 2009 3:14 PM

Francis B, New Zealand

Yeah I have that book.  That is proof that Edgar had a special connection to Barbaro than any other horse.  His brothers as well.  :)  Beautiful book isn't it.

StardustyRose 17 Jul 2009 4:07 PM

Thanks for the video. THe boys are just beautiful and it is so nice to see them out for a casual day. Lentenor looks just huge for a two year old! They are just breath taking and I could watch them for hours. I just hope and pray they stay strong, healthy and live very long lives.

CHRIS B 17 Jul 2009 4:36 PM

katie~vic, I`m sure they know they`re brothers, I think horses can talk to each other. And also, since they`re brothers, they probably have a similar scent, so I`m sure they know.lol

Glassoniongirl 17 Jul 2009 5:54 PM

Glassoniongirl:

A little off the subject, but seeing your handle gave me a start tonight when I got home and logged on to this thread. I had just come from dinner at one of my favorite local restaurants, The Glass Onion.

Soldier Course 17 Jul 2009 8:48 PM

For starters, if you're riding in the class of races Edgar is and for sure the Preakness, you better believe all of those jockeys, not just Edgar, would be capable of doing what Edgar did.  I gave you the example of Ruffian's jockey in another thread- she was a lot harder to get stopped. EDGAR was VERY lucky that BARBARO responded as he did.  What happened had more to do with BARBARO than Edgar. Jockey's have to deal with the horse they are on and Barbaro listened faster than some would.  Furthermore, if Edgar had stopped him "on a dime" as you stated, he would have caused even more injury to Barbaro because the horse would have had to prop on that lame leg to stop that quickly.

This need to Harelquin romanticize every aspect of the Barbaro story, especially the jocky/horse relationship, is demeaning to the jockey, horse, and the sport in general.

Jockeys get the mounts on horses because they are capable and part of that capability is being able to pull a horse up and deal with it until help arrives.

I asked you once before for lots of examples of jockey abandoning their mounts.  If you make the accusation, then come up with the facts and statistics.  I can believe that a 1,000lb. horse can pull away from a 105lb. person- I cannot believe that those people don't at least try.

And yes, you better believe that Prado would not hesitate to race ride against Nicanor.  He's paid to do that, it's his job.

THANKS BLOODHORSE~!!!

What a wonderful present for all of us following Barbaro's brothers and his new Sister to Be.

It is very thoughful of Bloodhorse to keep us updated on the status of these colts. It definately made my day and I had a really bad one.

Thanks again~!!!

Linda / Maryland 18 Jul 2009 12:04 AM

Two stunningly beautiful horses as was Barbaro. I will forever feel a connection to Lentenor. My name is Lynda (Lyn-Len) and Lentenor was born on my birthday. It has always been a dream to go the Kentucky Derby and I so hope that Lentenor runs in 2010...I will be there! Thank you again to Michael Matz and the Jacksons for allowing the public to continue to watch the saga of the Barbaro brothers(and hopefully the filly in 2010).

Lynda 18 Jul 2009 12:06 PM

Magnificent and ever so regal, these two are the real deal. They are living proof that God does not take something so special to us away without replacing it with something even more special.  He not only gave us one, but two of Barbaro's brothers.  And two more of them are up and coming (La Ville Rouge is in foal with a filly).

Karen Rico 18 Jul 2009 12:46 PM

Hi Mr. Matz,

Please inform us, the audience and fans, how Nicanor is doing with his leg injury.

Is it serious that he will no longer race?

Is the injury minor and just needs time to heal?

Please let us know as I am very worried about Nicanor.

Thank you!

Lise from Maine 18 Jul 2009 11:44 PM

Bonjour Nicanor and Lentenor!

The film pertaining to both of you that was filmed on July 9, 2009 is so beautiful and so entertaining, and there ought to be more of them just so your fans can see you more often and keep up with your activities.

Both of you seem to have such a great following that films such as this one has the potential to keep the interest of your fans.

I wonder if these films can be purchased. I would love to buy them.

Thank you Mr. Matz and Mr. and Mrs. Jackson for allowing the fans to view this film.

Lots of love to Nicanor and Lentenor!

"This need to Harelquin romanticize every aspect of the Barbaro story, especially the jocky/horse relationship, is demeaning to the jockey, horse, and the sport in general."

Once again, HorseFirst, you hit the nail on the head.  You are right--it is demeaning to everyone involved.

JAJ 19 Jul 2009 9:39 AM

Nicanor has a bone bruse and is already back at Fair Hill. Alex Brown talked to Mrs. Jackson so this came form the top. He needs time to heal now.

Thank you Alex for this information for we were really worried about our big boy.

Hopefully he'll have a speady recovery.

Lou in TX 19 Jul 2009 10:04 AM

Go Nicky.  You are so loved.  Did you know that?  ♥  A true FOB to the max here.  Get well sweetie and enjoy your peppermints and carrots and everything else that you are getting.  Thanks Michael Matz for your unconditional love for this horse.  :)

StardustyRose 19 Jul 2009 6:33 PM

I'd still like to know the location of the bone bruise.  A hind end issue can cover a lot of territory as to where it occurred.

A little off topic, but here is an example that horses can be taken care of after their careers.  Enjoy and do look at the picture on pedigree query- and keep in mind that the fellow was doing that at 25:

blog.seattlepi.com/.../174093.asp

www.pedigreequery.com/chinook+pass

Since Chinook was a gelding, he got to have another career.  Would love to see that for Nicanor but if he's successful on the track, he will go to the stud.

Horsefirst, this person you are replying to also said she hates Kent Desormeaux because he cheats, and can cite no examples to back up the accusation. She also said some unsavory things about the connections of Eight Belles.

I have made this point (re: Prado/Barbaro) so many times already, that ANY JOCKEY worth his/her salt would have done the same for Barbaro. In fact, it's a little scary sometimes, thinking about that tiny person atop a beast that weighs 10 times more than he does, and it really attests to the training and intelligence of the horse that the jockey is able to get him stopped and calmed, when his first instinct is to bolt and run.

Thank you for injecting reason into this discussion. I have nothing but respect for Michael Matz and the Jacksons, and for Edgar Prado as well, but to repeatedly proclaim them the Patron Saints of Racing and claim that they are the only ones who care about their horses is ridiculous fantasizing, not that there has been any shortage of that around here.

Concerned Fan 19 Jul 2009 10:22 PM

Thank you for the video and thank you for this blog.  It is such a delight.

Prayers are being offered for Nicanor's recovery.  God bless Michael Matz and the Jacksons.

Ivy77 19 Jul 2009 10:37 PM

Prado, being one of the best jockeys, gets calls to ride graded stakes horses all over the country. It wouldn't be fair to him to be the regular rider of Nicanor, who has not even run in a stakes yet.

steve 21 Jul 2009 5:50 PM

If you close your eyes, you can picture their big brother right there with them!  What a beautiful dream!  Love these boys...

Kim R 22 Jul 2009 12:31 PM

Thank you so much for the video.  They both are wonderful.  Lenny looks so much like Barbaro...watching them took me back when I met BB. I wish one of them finish one day what Barbaro couldn't; this will be the Happy Ending :)

Romantina 22 Jul 2009 12:52 PM

Am just now seeing the video. Thanks so much to those who allowed us in on a special time in their day.

What beautiful beasts they are indeed. And regarding the comments on Barbaro's Jockey: All or most all caring people suddenly and unexpectedly presented with a difficult situation will forget their own safety throw caution to the wind and make a fast decision given the choice to save something from destruction. It happens everyday but we do not always hear about it and it does not make anyone any better than another.  My desktop has been of Barbaro winning the Kentucky Derby with "all fours off the ground," with the Steeples in the background just like his statue.

linda in texas 22 Jul 2009 2:23 PM

They are so beautiful, they bring tears to my eyes. My daughter, who is not into horses like her Mom is, but who has been keeping me updated since my computer has been off line for several weeks, looked at the video and exclaimed, "What beautiful animals and hos much they look alike."

(I do believe her interest is piqued now and maybe we will have a new FOB, FON, FOL, et al in my Gretchen!)

Marigold 26 Jul 2009 8:06 PM

What a treat!  After being off the boards and blogs for weeks, what a divine gift to see these boys together, grazing and just being horses.  They certainly are breathtakingly beautiful.  Perfect horses or, rather, perfection in horseflesh form.  Nicanor's body appears to be interchangeable with Barbaro's, he's buffed up so much.  Lentenor, what a beauty!  Lots of excitement ahead with these two boys!  And then Marcano is coming and Crystal Bay!  How blessed we all are!

Marigold 27 Jul 2009 11:04 AM

Mill Ridge Farm has finally posted pics of Babynor on Barbaro's Family on their web site. He looks about the age he was in the video but still very worthy of a look. He is just adorable!!!

Lou in TX 27 Jul 2009 7:08 PM

Aww they are such beautiful horses.

Indy 31 Jul 2009 4:22 PM

I keep coming back to this video, often to find it is not available.  Guess it's been receiving lots of hits, right?  Just smitten again and again by these beautiful colts and growing impatient for Lentenor information, as I just KNOW he is going to be wonderful.  Also, impatient about my beloved Nicanor's recovery from his latest mishap/injury and anxious for him to race again and show what he can do. Then there is Babynor/Marcano -- how precious is he??!!  Will he be another star??  Actually, I'll answer my on question.  He already IS.

Marigold 01 Aug 2009 2:46 PM

Nic's feet don't look so oversized anymore.

Marigold 01 Aug 2009 4:17 PM

Watching the video, I noticed that Michael in a blue Vintage Farms cap and green shirt and jeans is holding Lentenor at first, then someone in a red cap and blue shirt takes over and walks him off.  Wonder who that was?.  Assume that Edoardo was the one holding Nicanor's line. Just somethiing I noticed...

Marigold 07 Aug 2009 2:45 AM

They are 2 Beautiful Horses.Barbaro would be proud. He is taking care of his babies from Horse Heaven. God Bless all our fabulous horses in the world.

JoAnne 09 Aug 2009 10:57 PM

I've watched this video almost every day since it went up on the blog.  The magnificent Nicanor has matured a lot since last year at this time.  Lentenor will, too.  My Gosh he looks like Barbaro!  Any news on how they are both doing currently??

Marigold 17 Aug 2009 10:35 PM

The video of Nicanor and Lentenor shows what beautiful Horses they are and to think they are brother's of our beloved "Barbaro"

AWSOME!!!

Darlyne 04 Sep 2009 4:49 PM

I'd love to see the video but the link is missing....any where else I can go to view it?

Donna 04 Sep 2009 8:50 PM

Got to include baby brother (Babynor/Marcano) who is well on his way to being just as beautiful a boy as the rest of them!  Maybe even more so. With his carriage, and dark coat and sunkissed tail and mane.  He is just breathtaking!
