Roy Jackson: Everything is Going Well

Touching base with Roy Jackson this afternoon, he said things are going well for Barbaro's full siblings - Lentenor, Nicanor, and the colt foaled this year, as well as with dam La Ville Rouge.

"Everything is going along pretty well," the owner said.

Although he did not have specifics, Jackson said Lentenor will start at some point in the fall, as he is now working steadily for Michael Matz. Likewise, Matz has not decided exactly when Nicanor, who was scratched out of the Virginia Derby, would make his return to competition, but it would also be in the fall. "We just had to give him some time (off)," Jackson said.

Of the 2009 colt, "he was full of it" the last time I saw him, said Jackson, who along with his wife Gretchen, operate Lael Stables.

Jackson said no decision has been made on the name of the 2009 foal and that he would be named when all the other Lael Stable horses are named. "We have until the first of the year. It takes a little while."

As for this blog, I will be on holiday until the second week of September, and the blog will be moderated by our Web Production department (webproduction@bloodhorse.com).

Thanks for the Update!

Sounds like Lentenor is moving along nicely. Nicanor just has a mind of his own. When he is ready, he WILL be READY!!

I am glad to hear that the whole family is doing well, that is Great!

myykkyy 03 Sep 2009 2:03 PM

Thank you Roy Jackson for your refreshing candor. I believe you to be a very busy man, but I have this feeling that this blog would shine with infinite wisdom if you dropped by more.

I tend to speak of Nicanor more as I think he needs more support because people tend to pick on him. Nicanor is the type of horse you'd invite over for a barbeque, visit at a book signing, take to a senior citizen's home for a therapy session and enjoy a day at the track with.

I adore Lentenor, but I think he can handle the people and pressure of racing himself.

Thanks again Roy.

Kathy 03 Sep 2009 2:10 PM

Thanks for the update.  Good to know all is well with the Jackson boys.  Enjoy your holiday!

LindaVA 03 Sep 2009 2:16 PM

Good to hear from Mr. Jackson.  Although I'm  confused, an earlier quote from him said that Babynor would be named from the lithograph the name beginning with an M but not ending with an r.  That would be Marcano. But maybe they haven't really decided how it will be spelled. As with all things involving this beloved family, time will tell.

Marigold 03 Sep 2009 2:31 PM

Thank you for the latest update.  Glad to hear that all are well.  I will follow this horse family forever.  These horses and their connections are always in my thoughts; as are many others.  Thanks, again.  Have a great Labor Day holiday!

Thanks Ron for the update.  It's good to know all is going well. I look forward to Lentenor having his maiden as well as Nicanor racing again.  We'll just wait for the information as to where and when.

Have a great vacation.

Thanks for the update! I wonder if Lentenor could make it to the Breeder's Cup race for juviniles? I can't wait to see him run. I think he'll do amazing!

Thanks for the update!  It is always such a pleasure to learn more about the Barbaro family, and this tidbit, direct from the head of the family could not be more welcomed.  I'll be patiently waiting for all of them to decide the first start for Lentenor and Nicanor's return.  Thanks!

txbarbfan 03 Sep 2009 5:05 PM

I am always so glad to hear of Barbaro's family and of the Jacksons and Michael Matz. Barbaro will be in all our hearts forever and it is so good to know that all his siblings, his dam and his human connections are doing well. Thank you for giving us the chance to read news like this.

Smarie 03 Sep 2009 5:22 PM

Great hearing that all is well with the Jackson boys and hope Laville Rouge is getting a break with cooler temps soon.  She is definitely carrying another precious cargo.  Hope everyone has a safe and happy Labor Day weekend.

Thank you so very much for the update.  The Jackson family and their "boys" are so very dear to all of us.  I admire the Jackson family and their genuine love for their horses.  You are mentors for the entire horse industry!!!

MJ 03 Sep 2009 10:35 PM

It was very kind of Mr Jackson to answer Ron's questions. Thank you soo much for your time.

Glad to hear all is well with the Barbaro family. Now maybe all the questions about LVR can be put to rest. Will certainly stay tuned for when MM decides to have Lenny do his Maiden. Can't believe he's already that grown. My how time flies.

Thanks Ron for checking on our boys & Mom. Hope you have a great weekend. Enjoy the racing!!

Lou in TX 03 Sep 2009 11:13 PM

A big thank you to Mr. Jackson for taking the time to share Nicanor and Lentenor with us. I'm glad to hear the boys are  doing well and the baby is growing and progressing well.  He already knows how special he is.  Glad to hear that La Ville is progressing well with her pregnancy.  They are such a special family and mean so much to all of us.  I think that both Nicanor and Lentenor will probably  start racing about the same time and I'm sure Nicky will give some pointers to Lenny.

Thanks again for the updates and have a safe Labor Day.

Chris K 04 Sep 2009 12:50 AM

what enormous pride the jackson family must be feeling! we are so proud and full of love for these boys, mom and dad, and the baby that is coming! one day (dreaming) it will be a real treat to see a picture of the entire family together. ron, thank you again for making this possible for all of us to stay in touch with each other. stardust, ragsy, everyone, have a great and safe holiday!

sandieh 04 Sep 2009 9:09 AM

Thank you, Ron, for the updates.  Bon Vacance!

bowlofflowers 04 Sep 2009 9:11 AM

I was kind of hoping that Lentenor might possibly make an appearance in the BC juvie, but since he hasnt broke a maiden yet, that probably wont happen. It does sound, however, that Lentenor may be a an earlier bloomer than his older brother, Nicanor. He sure looks bogger than Nic at the same age.

LACS70 04 Sep 2009 9:47 AM

Thank you for the updates on the boys and La Ville,it means alot to us followers of the family.Everybody have a great weekend and keep all the horses racing safe too!

Tracy 04 Sep 2009 9:54 AM

"THANKS BE TO GOD!"

Delighted to know "all" are doing well!

Ms CAROL A MARANO RN 04 Sep 2009 9:56 AM

Great news. . I had seen some works for Lentenor.  It would be great to see him race as a 2 year old. And it will be just as nice to have Nicanor back on the track.

RhondaH 04 Sep 2009 11:56 AM

Nice to hear from Mr. Jackson on the Brothers, Thank You!  Glad to hear Nicanor is healing up nicely.  Wouldn't that be something if both of these wonderful brothers race at Delaware Park this Fall?  I will be there, Front and Center, To witness this wonderful occasion if it occurs!   Thanks Again...

Hope Everyone has a safe weekend!  I will be at Saratoge enjoying the perfect weather and probably witnessing History being made with Rachel in the Woodward, I will post pictures of this historic occasion on Sunday, BUT, Watch out for Bullsbay and Macho Again  ;)

Greg J. 04 Sep 2009 12:15 PM

Wonderful news, enjoy your vacation!

Brian in Portland 04 Sep 2009 12:26 PM

Lentenor sounds much more like Barbaro starting then what Nicanor did.

jclson(Fan of Nicanor 04 Sep 2009 12:54 PM

Sandieh,  I was at a local fair near my house There was a artist that draws pictures and He drew a picture It was five horses with a Large light shining down on them from the sky and i asked about it and he said it was dynaform La Ville, Nicanor, Lentenor, baby horse and The light shining down from the sky in the middle it shows a Horse looking down on the five horses and it was barbaro.  The picture was large and it was gorgeouse but the price was large to so i didnt get it.  But i got teary eyed looking at the picture.

jclson 04 Sep 2009 1:02 PM

As for Nicky, hope you doing well and can't wait to see you back at the track.

I look forward to that and the first of the year when we find out what they're going to name the 09 colt!

Such wonderful news that all is well with the Barbaro family.

I must confess the little one just brings smiles to my face. What a character!

Thanks Mr. Jackson for the resurrance and thanks Ron for getting the news out. We sure appreciate every tidbit we can get. Have a safe and fun holiday, everyone.

That painting that you saw sounds incredible!  Wish I could have seen it.  Probably would have mortgaged the house to purchase it, though.

Thanks Ron for the updates on "The Family".  I had been wondering how Nicanor had been doing.

I think we all have lots to look forward to in 2010!

CarolinaJude 06 Sep 2009 12:41 PM

If they are at Delaware Park I am certainly going drive up there and see them first hand! I am in Southern Maryland so it isn't too far.

myykkyy 06 Sep 2009 10:51 PM

Thank You Roy!  What a wonderful family these horses have.  The best owners, trainer, riders, jockeys and on and on.

God Bless and Love you all ♥

Lucky for Rachel that Nicanor never got a chance to race against her.He would have left her in the dust. Get back to the track and lenny we are waiting.

The Phantom 08 Sep 2009 5:51 PM

I'm glad that everyone is fine. I can't wait to see Lentenor race!!!!

Maggie 08 Sep 2009 11:17 PM

Hi1

So glad to hear that Nicanor and Lentenor will be racing in the fall.

I bet that the "Little One" of 2009 will be named Margeno, the next hound name on that famous photo/painting that the Jackson's own.

Also, so glad to hear that La Ville Rouge is progressing nicely in her pregnancy.

Get well, Nicanor! I am so eager to hear about your next race, and you will win.

Lots of love to the family.

Lise from Maine 09 Sep 2009 3:45 AM

i am so glad the little one's are all doing well...they are not barbaro, they are special each in their own way and i know the little gretchen's boy and the little girl when she is born, will be special too...when barbaro was having a hard time i sent a message about my little boy (my 4 legged 140# puppy) that could not walk very well...well he put up a good fight too, but i lost him 8/26/09...a pain in the heart never goes away, but some times we are lucky enough to have wonderful memories and good new ones ahead with the new little ones...thank you for keeping the Spirit alive...the farmer's/kingman, az.

THE FARMERS 09 Sep 2009 3:51 AM

So very glad to hear that Nicanor is doing well. Except for his 1st start, not fault of his, Nicanor has performed quite well.  Hope that Lentenor does as well.  Hope that things keep progressing well for the "Boys" and their Mother.  Good Luck guys!!!!

Beverly Donahoo 09 Sep 2009 9:20 PM

Hi all, just got the notice that Nicanor's buddy Ice Road will be racing at Delaware Park on 9-12-09.

Best of luck to him. Nicky will be joining you in the near future.

Still reading about RA. Sure are lots of articles to read. The buzz is still going around. Surely the Jackson's will let her rest until 2010. She's had quite the campaign.

Hope Babynor is having fun with his new playmates. Maybe we can get an update as to how he's doing with out Mom around. Some new pics would be great. Can't imagine how much he's grown. Seems he was half grown when he was born. He is such a cutie, "full of himself" as Roy said.

Catch ya'll later.

Lou in TX 09 Sep 2009 10:14 PM

The Farmers I"m so sorry about the loss of puppy,  It is never easy to put a animal down but you put him at ease He is now running with Barbaro with no pain.  He will live in your heart.

Jclson(Fan of Nicanor 10 Sep 2009 8:30 AM

I'm still in complete shock that La Ville Rouge will foal a filly sometime next March!!!  (hopefully sooner).  All we can do is keep our fingers crossed.

The first filly in a male-dominated family.  Wow.....I'm totally ecstatic for the Jackson's and Barbaro's family.  I can only think that it was time for LVR to have a filly.  She deserves to get a break from having colts.  Let's hope this marks one of many champion fillies by Dynaformer out of LVR.

Number1BarbaroFan 10 Sep 2009 4:04 PM

The Farmers...I to am sooo sorry about your loss. I had to put to sleep a Golden that was just a little over a year old. It is heart breaking. She was having horrible seizures and the medication was not helping. Seizures are very painful to the body so I couldn't let her continue be in pain. Time will help the pain but you'll never forget your pet. Maybe Barbaro has taken your puppy under his wing (so to speak)and they are running all over the clouds having fun. Just know you're not alone in this.

Lou in TX 10 Sep 2009 9:11 PM

The Farmers,

Sorry about your puppy,it is nice to see animals treated with respect and dignity, like the Jacksons did with Barbaro. It's very touching.

Tracy 11 Sep 2009 9:57 AM

The Farmers

So sorry, that kind of loss is so

painful.  I know it first hand,I

still cry after 5yrs.  He lived to

twice the expected age of 8yrs

but even 17yrs was not enough

for me.

Zia 11 Sep 2009 11:00 PM

The Farmers,

So sorry to hear about your baby boy. Yes, I also think of my 6 dogs and 1 cat as my children.  My oldest dog is 18 years old and I recently acquired the 6th dog 2 weeks ago when someone decided to drop a 10 lb Chihuahua off on my dirt road(we live in the country).  Most of the hair was off of his back due to a flea allergy.  My husband took him to our vet the next morning and after a round of steroids, antibiotics, and weekly bath in oatmeal shampoo, he has completely healed and hair is starting to grow back.  He was also heartworm negative which was an added bonus and he is a very loving puppy which is another bonus. I also have a Rat Terrier that has mild siezures, mostly controlled by medication.  It is heart breaking and scary to see an animal go through that.  He is 9 years old, had him since he was 10 days old.  They become a part of your heart no matter how long you have them.

Nicanor should be close to the end of his 60 day rehab.  I hope he is still doing well.  Some new pictures of Babynor would be greatly appreciated.

Penny in TX 12 Sep 2009 12:26 AM

The Farmers

I'm so very sorry,I know how

painful it is to lose a dearest

friend and companion. Try to be comforted that he was so

loved by you and he knew that love every day.  You are right the pain never goes away, but we have the memo-

ries of their love unreserved.

Zia 14 Sep 2009 1:50 AM

THE FARMERS

I am sorry about your loss.  You said it. Treasure the good memories.  That is the best medicine.  Puppy is only gone for a while until you see him again.  I have a 9 year old dog and I know one day, I will lose her too.  Have lost a lot of dogs in my life.  I pray for your comfort.

There is a thread at the Obama site (a couple of them RE: horses).  If you can, please put in your two cents for our horses K?

workout

tc01 15 Sep 2009 9:45 AM

FYI,

Just to let Everyone know, Lentenor had a work yesterday at Fair Hill...

LENTENOR

Date: September 14, 2009

Track: FAIR HILL

Distance: Five Furlongs

Time: 1.01:60 Breezing

Track Condition: Fast

Surface: All Weather Training

Rank: 7/9

It is his first published 5 Furlong work, I say he is getting VERY close to his first race, I would have to guess if all goes well then maybe at Delaware Park in October in a MSW at 7 Furlongs on the dirt, Pure speculation on my part...

Also, Rockland (Son of Smarty Jones), Looks like he is getting very close to making his return to the track....

Very Exciting News on both fronts...

Greg J. 15 Sep 2009 9:55 AM

I see Lentenor ran 5 furlongs today. How is Nicanor doing, hope to see him back at work also.

Tracy 15 Sep 2009 9:58 AM

Greg J.....glad to see you are still around. Haven't seen a blog from you in a long time. Thanks for the info on Lenny. My Virtual  notifications aren't coming thru again. I have them in my address book twice but they have stopped coming for a second time. Getting really agrivated with this.

When in Oct. for the MSW at Delaware? Do you have a date? MTB is racing the 10th in the Goodwood Stakes at Sanat Anita. And Zenyatta is in the Ladies Secret Stakes there.

Sounds like RA isn't going to run again. Thank goodness!!! She deserves a long rest. 2010 will be here before you know it.

We need to give Nicky all the time he needs to heal so I'm not worried about when he might retun to training or racing. MM will know when he's ready.

I don't know about the rest of you but I was glad to see the sun today. I had almost 13 inches of rain at my house. Felt like I was going to grow webbed feet.

Catch ya'll later..

Lou in TX 15 Sep 2009 9:37 PM

Yes, I saw he did. I guess he will race soon.

myykkyy 15 Sep 2009 9:58 PM

Any chance Nicanor (or Lentenor in futurities) will participate in a Breeder's Cup undercard race?

Elaine 16 Sep 2009 1:12 AM

Yea!! Lentenor doing nice works!

I can hardly wait until he starts

racing.  Nicanor should be back

at works soon and I'm just so

antsy until they are ready to go.

Zia 16 Sep 2009 1:22 AM

Delaware Park has no 7 furlong races on the dirt. Its either

5, 5 1/2, or 6 furlongs. Hope Matz doesn't start him at a mile.

And what does Rockland have to do with this Blog? It's about Barbaro's family.

Don 16 Sep 2009 2:23 PM

Good news about Lentenor.

Lou in TX, my virtual notifications have stopped too.

Lou, we have had about the same with no sun yet.

Greg J, do you know why the virtual notifications would stop?

Penny in TX 16 Sep 2009 6:24 PM

Don it may be about the Barbaro family but it is also about MM and he is the trainer of Rockland and Rockland is a buddy of Nicky.  Anything that has to do with Matz, Barbaro's family are all intertwined so that is your reson why we mention Rockland or Ice Road etc. Hope that helps.

lobieb 16 Sep 2009 6:34 PM

Maybe we could somehow get some new pictures of the boys??

That would be very nice.

myykkyy 16 Sep 2009 7:00 PM

Good work from Lentenor

stardustyrose 17 Sep 2009 11:59 AM

Don,

FYI, "Rockland" is a part of this blog, You should take some time and read from the beginning.  Rockland was a workout partner with Nicanor and He is trained by Mr. Matz, He has been mentioned many times on this BLOG by myself and others, Hence, It makes him relevant to Barbaro and his Family...

Lou in TX.,

Hello there! I didn't go anywhere, Just, with there being a lull in the information being available and while Nicanor is healing, Just been busy with other aspects.  I did go to the Travers and the Woodward at Saratoga!  It was Wild, In all my years going to the tracks, I have never seen such electricity and excitement when I witnessed Rachel race, A day I will never forget!  True greatness...As far as Lentenor running, That was pure speculation on my part, It could happen in October or later, I was just giving my opinion on what I thought would be the best scenario for him, I do know this, When he hits the track, I will make the trek down from Connecticut!, That is a given...Be good Lou!

Here are some pictures I took the day of the Woodward at Saratoga:

www.flickr.com/.../page2

As far as the not getting notified of Lentener's works in your Stable's?  Sometimes Lentenor might have un-published works, But, On his latest work, I did recieve my notice, So, It could have just been a glitch that some didn't get it?...

Greg J. 17 Sep 2009 12:07 PM

I noticed that in Lentenor's 5 furlong breeze, that the other horses breezing at that distance were older.  He was the only two year old.  Does that mean anything?  Just trying to learn.

maryosborne82@yahoo.com 17 Sep 2009 6:25 PM

Greg J

Thanks for the pictures, they are great!!! Wish I could see RA, MTB, Ice Road, Rockland and a lot of other horses race but I'm too far away.

Penny in TX & Ragsy

I have talked with Equibase and the problem is with aol in my case. Have also talked with aol and the two of them have to work out the problem. Has something to do with the notifications being sent back as spam so they discontinue the notices. Has something to do with the ISP whatever that is? I may have to unsubscribe if they can't work out the problem. :(  Greg, you'll have to keep me updated on both the boys if they work out.

Ron seems to be really busy with all the sales right now. Maybe when this slows down he will have time to check on our family. Wonder what's going on with Babynor and his buddies. I bet he's having fun running and bothering the others. You know to get them to play with him.

Still having rain here. It's suppossed to be nice this weekend. I sure hope so.

Catch ya later..

maryosborne82, here's a wishful thought. if lennie starts racing in oct, and is sucessful through the beginning of the year, all of us that are horse crazed for news, we may very well see him the first saturday in may. lennie, so proud we are of you, i watched your mother carry you (through the news, of course) and now look! nicky, precious nicky, hope to see you again soon! i could only imagine the excitement of seeing you guys in person! lots of love, and everyone out there, have a great weekend! ron, i need a picture of babynor to put with the family pictures in my cube, i know your busy and sincerely appreciate all your time, but HINT? THANKS!

myykkyy 19 Sep 2009 12:03 AM

Congratulations to Princess Haya for her great win in the Canadian Stakes at Woodbine today.  Michael does not race a horse unless he knows they can come in in the money and I do believe she belongs in part to Michael's wife.

lobieb 20 Sep 2009 2:43 PM

Sorry MM does not have part of Princess Haya, but congrats anyway for his training to the win.

lobieb 20 Sep 2009 5:08 PM

Hey FOB's

One of MM horses, Princess Haya, won 1st place at Woodbine today (20th). Yea for MM!!!! I like this horse. She broke her maiden not too long ago. This was a G2 race. Sooo happy for MM.

How has everybody been doing? Sure miss news on our family. Know Ron has been busy with the sales lately but hopefully he'll find time to check on our family soon. Maybe Lentnor is getting ready for his first race soon. Although I really hate to see horses race at the age of 2. Think they need more time for their leg bones to develop more fully. I know Barbaro raced at 2 but I think he was an older 2yr old. Oh well, maybe we'll get some news soon. I know Ron hasn't forgotten about us he's just been busy.

Oh, Greg J, I think they have gotten my Virtual Stable fixed. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Just an FYI..Simmer Bird is going to race in the Jockeys Gold Cup at Belmont on Oct. 3rd, 1 1/4 mile.

Catch ya later...

Lou in TX 20 Sep 2009 5:19 PM

Sorry, did not know Lentenor had a favorite work out buddy.

Also, Lentenor has 2 more times at Del. Park to break his maiden [MSW]going 6 Furlongs. Oct. 10th [sat.] and Oct. 26th [mon.] last day of racing at D.P.

Don 20 Sep 2009 9:45 PM

Sure was hoping Nicanor would be able to run this fall. Maybe Lentenor will.

MARYOSBORNE82 Doesn't mean anything. Just happened that way.

All horses at Fair Hill use the track and the others at that time just happened to be older.

myykkyy 20 Sep 2009 11:55 PM

Hi:

Just stopping by and no new news.  I know the mod was on vacation but hopefully something new will be coming up in the next few days?

I would think Baby J is about to be weaned or just has been by now.  That means LVR will have a few months from not having to nurse and raise a youngster.  Of course she's still got a bun in the oven but at least the one by the side has grown up to be a weanling.

New pics please!

Margaret

Don...just an FYI...Ice Road is another workout buddy of Nicanors. He seems to have a lot of buddies. Of course they are all trained by MM so that's why we keep up. Especially since our boys aren't doing much right now. Just wait till we get some more news, you won't hear about the buddies much.

I think we're trying to find things to talk about while we're in a lull. Feel free to talk about anything that interests you.

Margaret, Babynor was turned in with the other young ones a while back. He should be having the time of his life playing with all his new buddies. LVR hopefully is getting lots of rest and lots of treats. I know they are taking very good care of her at Mill Ridge.

All, have a great week.

To maryosborne82,

My post seems to have been lost in cyberspace.  Very few horses breezed that day and, yes, Lentenor was the only 2-year old breezing on the synthetic track.  A bunch of 2-year olds breezed on the dirt track that day.

Some trainers feel that the dirt track is more forgiving to horses than the synthetic track is, which may be why most of the 2-year olds breezed on the traditional dirt track rather the track Lentenor breezed on.

It is possible that Lentenor cannot handle the dirt, and just ends up spinning his wheels if he is asked for speed on dirt.  As I said, that is a possibility.  I have no way of knowing if that is true.

JAJ 22 Sep 2009 3:26 PM

I hope the horse does well on both surfaces. can't wait to see him run. Would love to hear some new info.

Keep Me In Mind 23 Sep 2009 5:35 PM

Hey JAJ,

What makes a turf horse vs. a dirt horse?  I think I've read that if they have a higher way of going, they are considered more of a turf horse.  Have I got that right? (Except for Man O' War, if I recall correctly, he was considered to have a high way of going and it sure didn't slow him down on dirt)

Is there anything else, conformation, etc., that makes a horse better on turf or dirt?

Thanks!

HorseFirst 23 Sep 2009 7:45 PM

I am glad they are giving him some time off. I hope he gets better and gets out into the racing world. Can't wait for the new foals name. Will be waiting for Nicanor's return. Go Nicanor!!!!

Penny in TX....I had to have Virtual Stable Equibase call this 800 # (1-888-212-5537) at aol and get the problem fixed. The lady I emailed with @ equibase was named Michelle and her # is 1-800-333-2211. I haven't had any problems so far so hopefully they got it fixed. Something about aol blocking some ISP addresses. This is all greek to me but maybe these contacts will help you to.

Don't you love the cool weather we have been having?

Hope this helps...catch ya later

Lou in TX 24 Sep 2009 10:13 AM

I see where Lentanor had a 5F breeze today at 1:02 and must have been the only one on the work tab today but thats a good sign that the first race won't be too far off whether it be dirt or grass.  Hooray.  Sure hope Nicky can get back to work soon.

lobieb 24 Sep 2009 7:30 PM

Well,to utterly confound me,now Lentenor has had a good work on the dirt track.  It may be that maybe he is 'at home' on both types of surfaces.  That surely would open up a lot of opportunities

for him.  Pins and needles,I can hardly wait for one of the

boys to be racing again!

Zia 26 Sep 2009 3:11 AM

Thanks Lou in TX, I will give it a try.  I do love the cool weather we have been having here, it is wonderful, lots of blue skies.  Today is perfect.

I can't wait for Lentenor's first race, it will be exciting. I'm still wishing good thoughts on Nicanor, he will always be special.

Penny in TX 26 Sep 2009 2:26 PM

HorseFirst asked what makes a horse better on dirt or turf.

I don't know!  I don't think anyone really does.  Some people think it is way of going, others think it is foot conformation.  I'm sure all play a role.  There is interesting science to what actually happens to the surface and how it behaves when the foot of a racing Thoroughbred hits it.

Basically, you are looking for the surface that a given horse performs best over.  You can only tell by testing the horse over the differing surfaces IN A RACE.  Many turf-only horses will breeze very well over the dirt, but not be able to race well over it.  When they have to give their all, they sort of fall apart.  They seem to be able to handle it until they are set down, which they will never be in a breeze.

There are so many variables.  No two turf courses are the same and they change day to day.  Is the turf soft and yielding or hard like tarmac?  A horse who does well on soft and yielding turf is not bothered by the undulations of the course and with sinking in.  A soft turf might have less solid footing.  Some horses don't like the feel of that even if they can get over the surface well.  A horse with high action, especially a big horse, will punch deep into a soft turf.  That same horse might be able to get over a firm turf course.

A turf horse who can't handle the dirt won't be able to get hold of a dirt track.  It will break away under them.  Sometimes horses who run well on dirt early in their careers will not perform well on it later.  I suspect the horse chooses not to perform once he has discovered the surface he prefers.

Sometimes a horse won't run well on dirt because of the kick back.  Synthetic tracks seem to have less kick back.  They get it in their nose and their eyes as well as getting their bodies pelted by it.

No dirt tracks are exactly the same, just as turf courses change from day to day.

I have to make a comment on Jess Jackson's rants about "plastic" surfaces.  Turf is the ONLY natural surface.  All others, including his beloved dirt, are very artificial surfaces.

JAJ 26 Sep 2009 2:40 PM

I was happy to read that Lentenor may be close to his first start. If he is considered further along than Nicanor, and faster, then one could say that Lentenor could earn a higher beyer figure than Nicanor did (104) when he races. If that's true, then the best 2 year old hasn't raced yet. The highest byer thus far was a 102. Lentenor will probably beat that figure handily.

I always thought that had Nicanor could have easily run against Rachel Alexandra the way he just liked company when racing. Nicanor's racing style was similar to Man O' War's in that his canter is every other horse's fully extended gallop. AS fast as Custom for Carlos was going, Nicanor ran just to keep pace.

In any case, look for Nicanor to be a great 4 year old and for Lentenor to run the best Beyer figure. On paper, he's faster than Nicanor, thus his speed figures should allow him to both sprint and rate....

Thought I would post something just to see if this blog was even still working.

MJ 28 Sep 2009 8:06 PM

Greg J. AWESOME pictures of Nicanor.  I was at Saratoga for the Travers and the Woodward also.  Rachel is a beauty, i bet she can't wait for her date with Curlin. I guess i am waiting just as everyone else is for Nicanor and Lentanor to get back to the track.

Deby 29 Sep 2009 4:43 PM

Glad to see somebody finally posted some remarks. Ron, we know you have been busy with all the sales so why don't you get someone to help you with this site until your schedule slows down a bit.

Could you check and see if Lentenor is going to race anytime soon and how Nicky is doing. We need some kind of news here. We're trying to be patient but we're getting restless now. Thanks for any news you might could get for us.

Lou in TX 30 Sep 2009 11:06 AM

A little bird at Fair Hill told me this morning that Lentenor is working well and is very close to his first start. How exciting !  I hope to see you on the first Saturday in May

MDFANOFRACING 30 Sep 2009 1:49 PM

Greg,

LOL @ the FOB bus, that is winderful & hysterical all at the same time. Kinda reminded me of <sigh> the partridge family. Ok, im dating myself. I see from your pictures that you have a house full of cat's too. My friend says she going to make me a sign for my yard that says "welcome to Kim's Cathouse". I have 6 cats, a chihuahua that thinks he is a rottweiler and a 16 month old black Arabian stud colt. That's right....a zoo. Seriously though, where can I see this bus in person, it's FANtastic.

MDFANOFRACING 30 Sep 2009 2:16 PM

JAJ-

Thanks a lot for your informative answer.  I keep hearing announcers or TV pundits talk about way of going and surface preference but there just has to be way more to it than that.

HorseFirst 30 Sep 2009 5:30 PM

I really miss Curlin. I can't

wait for his babies and with the brothers not ready to race I'm a bit forlorn.

Greg, I think that you have hit the nail on the head,it's what the horse likes for a surface. We have all seen horses that do best at a parti-

cular track.

Zia 30 Sep 2009 5:34 PM

A few other comments on turf horses...

Turf racing is not all year round in most of the US, so a turf horse has less opportunities to race than a dirt horse or a horse who races well on both surfaces.

The track will hopefully do everything it can to protect the turf course and will not run races on it when it rains.  They will also move the rail around to try to protect areas.  Late in the year, many turf courses are pretty chewed up, often with holes in the turf.  You'll see horses taking bad steps and bobbling during a race.  While they may continue to run races on the turf, some trainers (or owners) may choose not to run their turf horses on a course that is full of divots.

At most tracks, turf races are only written for the better horses.  At my home track, Woodbine, a $40,000 claiming race is the lowest level of race they will write a turf race for.  A $40,000 claiming horse is a darn good racehorse.  This further limits a turf horse unless he is races in the upper echelons to begin with.

Those are some of the issues a trainer of a turf horse has to deal with.

Jon, are you for real?  Trainers and assistant trainers ALWAYS put the best spin on their reports on a horse in training, especially to the public.  Matz MIGHT have an idea of the quality Lentenor is, but it will only be a guess until the colt has been tested in a race or two.

Ditto with Nicanor, who has never even run in a stakes race.  It is a BIG step up in class to go from an "allowance, non winners of a race other than" to a stakes race.  The only horses a trainer really knows are out and out super stars are the speed-ball sprinters such as Zensational.  Horses that run a route of ground are not so obviously talented.  There is a lot more to winning a route race than raw speed.

We need an update on our Family?

There has got to be some news and a few pictures?

Anyone up near Fair Hill who could check this out for us?

myykkyy 30 Sep 2009 7:02 PM

Hi to all!

Any more news regarding Nicanor and Lentenor in terms of their racing schedules?

I am eager to watch some races by them.

Why is it that no one updates the latest news pertaining to these wonderful horses?

Thank you!

MDFANOFRACING....sounds like my house when the kids were youg. At one time we had 2 ponies, 5 cats, three dogs, a turtle and a parakete. They really kept me busy besides being a housekeeper, wife, Mother and the only person who could drive the kids to all their sport activities. But you know, I wouldn't trade those days for anything. Just wanted to let you know I understand about zoos.

I wish Mr and Mrs Jackson would have more photos of them with Lenetor Nicaor and La Ville Rouge.  Mrs Jackson is just as personable as Penny Tweedy....and we miss Penny...and her talking of all the love that enters her mailbox.
