Sunday, October 4, marks the anniversary of what was to become the first step on the road to racing history for one of the most storied runners in recent memory.
It was on that day four years ago that Barbaro broke his maiden in his first start. Facing 10 other 2-year-olds in the $40,000 maiden special weight carded at a mile on turf as the 7th race at Delaware Park that day, Barbaro was sent off as the 7-1 fourth choice. After being difficult to load, the son of Dynaformer broke quickly from the 9 post position under jockey Jose Caraballo and chased early leader Haajes through the first five furlongs before taking the lead. With only mild urging, Barbaro drew off with ease in the final quarter to win by 8 ½ lengths. His final time was 1:35.87.
Barbaro was the only first-time starter in the race, but he quickly became the most accomplished horse to come out of that race. Runner-up Jade's Revenge went on to win three stakes, including a grade III, but none of the other starters earned blacktype. Police Chief, a $150,000 juvenile sale purchase who finished sixth as the 7-5 favorite, eventually broke his maiden in his sixth start. He retired with a career record of one win from 12 starts and earnings of $7,642.
And we don't have to remind you of what became of Barbaro. October 4, 2005, is indeed a date to remember.
