Lentenor Entered, But Jacksons Will Probably Miss Debut

Like all of us, Roy and Gretchen Jackson have been eagerly awaiting the career debut of Lentenor, and now that Barbaro's brother is ready to make his first start at Keeneland on Saturday, Oct. 31, they will probably miss it.

The Jacksons probably won't be there when Lentenor goes to post under Julien Leparoux in the 5th race, a $50,000 maiden special weight at seven furlongs. There are 11 other 2-year-olds entered in the race.

Roy Jackson said Lentenor has been ready to go for weeks and that as many as four other races they were considering for him on the East Coast did not work out. So now he's at Keeneland. He's sure to draw a lot of attention and betting money, considering the high level of interest in everything that happens with the Barbaro family.

Speaking of the rest of the family, Roy said that Nicanor, the other full brother (by Dynaformer-La Ville Rouge), probably won't run again until early next year, on turf at Gulfstream Park.  Nicanor was scratched out of the Virginia Derby (gr. IIT) due to a bone bruise and has not raced since.

"He's doing fine. He's galloping. But with a bone bruise, you have to be careful with it. He's grown a lot. So maybe this was for the best. He's really matured."

Now, we just have to wait and see if Lentenor joins his brothers as a winner.

Wonderful!  All the best to Lentanor in his first race.  Bring him home safely Julien.

Matt D. 28 Oct 2009 3:55 PM

Thank you Ron for the updates. It is good to know that Nicanor is fine and waiting for the perfect turf race at Gulfstream.

Kathy 28 Oct 2009 3:57 PM

Good luck Lentenor!

Summer Star 28 Oct 2009 4:00 PM

Be safe beautiful boy and run well.  We know you can do it, you are a winner no matter what.  Prayers for all the horses and jockeys that are racing.

HaleyB 28 Oct 2009 4:09 PM

I am very happy that he will finally get to go in the gate, but not too excited that his debut will be on the polytrack.....let us hope he wins anyway....

Don from Delaware 28 Oct 2009 4:10 PM

Ofcourse he'll win!!!! Good luck Lentenor!!!! Knock em dead!!! Too bad about Nicanor but it's for the best and he'll be more ready.

Liv 28 Oct 2009 4:12 PM

"He's grown a lot. So maybe this was for the best. He's really matured."

Nicanor is still growing? Wow. He's going to be one tall fellow. : )Look forward to seeing you race next year Nicky!

I am also looking forward to the debut of Lentenor! Go get 'em boy!

Arem 28 Oct 2009 4:16 PM

What wonderful news on a Thursday afternoon. Good luck to the Jacksons, Michael Matz, Peter Brette, and Lentenor!

MONTANA 28 Oct 2009 4:19 PM

Katrina 28 Oct 2009 5:10 PM

We all LOVE Lentenor!  Ride with the wind, show everyone the great horse that you already are in your maiden voyage.  Ride him well, Julien and be safe above all!!!!!

Sally F 28 Oct 2009 5:25 PM

What great news.  I will be checking this website frequently on Saturday for the results.  May you have wings Saturday Lentenor.

Cassidy 28 Oct 2009 5:30 PM

Woot! Go Lentenor!  Hope the race will be posted on youtube!

Glassoniongirl 28 Oct 2009 5:41 PM

what time is the race?

Courtney of OH 28 Oct 2009 6:07 PM

Best of luck to Lentenor! Will have to catch it on TVG this weekend.

That his debut is on the polytrack is probably not a big deal--from what I understand, Fair Hill has a synthetic training track which he's surely worked over, and of course we all know that his family does well on the turf, which synthetics is so commonly compared to.

Hope Nicanor continues to heal up well and comes back as good or better as before.

nonnonheinous 28 Oct 2009 6:18 PM

Oh wow.  I know I've been waiting to go to Keeneland for some reason!  I'm going to go, barring any rain!  Oh well, to heck with the rain!  I wanna see him.  Go Lentenor, Go!

smartysgal 28 Oct 2009 6:20 PM

Hoo-rah! Go-Lenny-Go!

Breeders Cup 2010 might be interesting - maybe both boys will be running in it. Let's hope they both race into their 4 and 5-year old years.

diastu 28 Oct 2009 6:23 PM

Best of luck to Lentenor. Sure hope he wins his 1st race. He's entered in a big field of 2 yo's, 12 colts. At least he has a decent post position, #2.

Don 28 Oct 2009 6:32 PM

Fingers and toes will be crossed but I know our boy will give it the best he can and will prevail.  So that is why most of his training at Fair Hill has been on the tapette track.  Was hoping for a turf race for him to start but he may love the surface and hopefully the real dirt when the time comes.  Go Lenny.

lobieb 28 Oct 2009 6:34 PM

YES! Can wait to see how he dose!! Everyone pray and wish and hope that ,not so baby, Lentenor will break his madien the first time just like his famous brother Barbaro!!! GO LENTENOR, you are the hope for a KD hopeful!

ZenyattatheChamp 28 Oct 2009 7:09 PM

Go Lentenor this is the moment we have all been dreaming of

meleah 28 Oct 2009 7:14 PM

IM NOT TOO CONCERNED ABOUT LENTENOR RUNNING ON POLYTRACK, HE'S BEEN TRAINING ON TAPITA, SO ITS NOT LIKE HE HAS NOT RUN ON SYNTHETICS. KEENELAND ON HALLOWEEN, I LOVE IT....AWESOME NEW. GO LENTENOR! PSST, LOL,  SOMEONE TELL MONTANA, IT'S WEDNESDAY :)

MDFANOFRACING 28 Oct 2009 7:20 PM

Do well Lentenor!!

   YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Midge 28 Oct 2009 8:01 PM

Thanks for the update!  I'll be definitely watching his debut and hoping he finds the winner's circle the first time out.  Not every horse takes his first race, but here's one more fan hoping he can pull it off, but of course, above all...be safe.

txbarbfan 28 Oct 2009 8:20 PM

Thanks for the updates.  I'm so excited about Lentenor, and I am so grateful that Nicanor was given the time to heal and grow. I'll be a fan forever!

CLee 28 Oct 2009 8:24 PM

So excited for Lentenor.  Be safe and run fast

MJ 28 Oct 2009 8:32 PM

Lenny...have a safe trip and come home sound. You will have an angel watching from above smiling down on you, your big brother Barbaro.

There will also be a lot of FOB's in your in corner wishing you a great run. We don't care if you win your first race or not as long as you stay healthy and happy.

I'll be watching TVG if they broadcast that race. Surely, with his following and being a brother to such a famous one, they will. They followed Nicanor so they better follow Lentenor!!

Sorry the Jackson's won't be able to attend but surely MM will be there with him.

Hopefully Julien has worked with him enough to know how he likes to run. We all know how Nicanor likes to hang back and then go for it around the last turn for home. It will be interesting to see how Lentenor does his thing.

Glad to hear that Nicanor is doing well. Will be anxious to see him next year. Sounds like he's going to be a really big boy when he races again. Here's wishing him a happy winter and a safe trip to Fla. Hopefully we'll hear when both brothers head south.

GO LENTENOR...RUN LIKE THE WIND!!!

Lou in Tx 28 Oct 2009 9:23 PM

WOW - how exciting. I cannot wait!! Win or lose, Lentenor will always be a very special boy. Run with the wind Beautiful One!!

Ida Lee 28 Oct 2009 9:38 PM

Great to hear that he's progressing well and will have his chance! Will be wishing him lot's of luck and love! Hope he does everyone proud!

KelliK 28 Oct 2009 9:41 PM

this beautiful boy has the look of a superstar about him and he always has had that look.  Pray for a safe race and a successful one for our Lentenor.

Marigold 28 Oct 2009 10:24 PM

" Well " I know where I will be on Saturday!!! I wouldn't miss it for the world!

Race 5 at Keenland. (On my TV ) since I am in Maryland. :-(

But I can't wait to see him RACE.

Like Barbaro I think you will win your first Maiden Race.

Linda / Maryland 28 Oct 2009 10:42 PM

OH! This is so exciting. I could barely sit still and eat my dinner tonight...I am so excited! This is the news that I and I know all of the FOB's have been waiting for!

I was hoping his first race would be fairly local to Mill Ridge....so I could go to the race (and I hoped to meet up with some of you) but Keeneland is too far. So who all will be going? Greg J...we depend upon you...you always have the best pictures and comments about the races!...not to mention all of the other little tid bits you are somehow able to come up with and share with us. We need you here!!!

I believe in Lentenor...I believe something special was passed on to him. It is finally time.

Run like the wind Lentenor, and may your big bro in the sky watch over you and keep you safe!

Irene 28 Oct 2009 11:20 PM

I also want to say a big thank you to Greg J. for all the updates, photos, insight, youtube clips... etc., that he has kindly shared with everyone.

This is great that Lentenor will get his 1st race in. Hopefully he will show great potential.

Rambo 29 Oct 2009 1:52 AM

What great news! Can't believe this day has finally come. Am very anxious about his debut but know he will do well. Nice to hear about Nicanor too. Can't say I'm disappointed about his not racing until next year because most of all, I want him sound, safe and happy. We all do, those of us that have been here for him.

Get better Nicanor and come back for us next year.

Good luck Lentenor baby, you are the one!

Love that Julien will be riding Lentenor, he's such a patient jockey and superb on the turf in case Lentenor goes to the grass anytime soon after this race. Looking forward to saturday and congratulations to the connections on getting Lentenor ready and able at last. Smiles and hugs all around!

Dona 29 Oct 2009 3:59 AM

After looking over the rest of the field, this could be a very good race.Top jockeys,  top trainers usually means a field  of pretty good colts.  Lentenor has an excellent chance to run to his ability.  I'm so glad that the waiting is over,I'll be rooting for

him all the way!!

Zia 29 Oct 2009 6:11 AM

Run with the speed, love, and good wishes that we have for you, sweet one! Nicky, we love you and hope to see you soon, to. Gosh, Lennie, your time has come so fast! Horsey hugs to you both with Babynor!

sandieh 29 Oct 2009 6:24 AM

Arem, horses are not fully "grown-up" until they are 5 years old...that's when they have all their adult teeth and have reached their full size, muscling and filled out, etc. The growth plates in their bones (legs, spine) grow and fuse at different rates and his spine is not fully fused until 5, his knees and more weightbearing areas not until late in 3 year-old year...

da3hoss 29 Oct 2009 7:04 AM

LET'S GO LENTENOR!!!  GOOD LUCK AND GODSPEED!!!

DARLA 29 Oct 2009 8:33 AM

GO LENNY GO!!!!!  Can't wait to see your first race!  I'm SO EXCITED AND HAPPY FOR YOU!!!!!

Julien rides Eistein so you're in GREAT hands!  LOL!

J in NY 29 Oct 2009 8:59 AM

MDFANOFRACING,

I wonder about the workouts.

1) Tapeta and poly aren't the same.

2) 5 of his last 8 works were on dirt.

3) His works haven't been spectacular, and he hasn't worked since 10/15

I'll put my $2 eleswhere.  Perhaps the Jacksons are staying home to avoid seeing Lentenor finish off the board.

Good luck to him,anyway.

BTW, ALL CAPS is considered screaming, and rude.

Julio

Julio 29 Oct 2009 9:53 AM

God Bless you Lentenor, have a safe trip.

Carol 29 Oct 2009 10:04 AM

Good luck Lentenor! Hope his first time out is a good and safe run!

Glad to hear they are taking their time with these two. They envisioned a long career for Barbaro, so I hope they achieve this with his siblings.

Wishing them all the best!

Bianca 29 Oct 2009 10:12 AM

tc01 29 Oct 2009 10:26 AM

Lentenor's Race goes off around 3:05...

The Field...

1. Ink (Unbridleds Song, Queen of Spirit), ET Baird jockey, Unraced...

2. LENTENOR (Dynaformer, La Ville Rouge), J. Leparoux, Unraced...

3. Positive Split (Repent, Hope of Nations), R. Albarado, 2 starts, 2 seconds...

4. Raincatcher (Dehere, Aud), C. Borel,  1 Start...

5. Zip Around (City Zip, Talking Point), S. Bridgmohan, Unraced...

6. Albany Road (Mr. Greeley, Janes the Name), K. Desormeaux(UGH!), Unraced...

7. In the Paint (Tiznow, Copelan's Angel), C. Lanerie, Unraced...

8. Gondorf (Theatrical, Sweet and Firm), C. Decarlo, Unraced...

9. Kingofthebluegrass (?????,??????), F. Torres, ?????...

10. Silver Country (Storm Cat, Silver Star), M. Mena, Unraced...

11. Notoriety (Marias Mon, Wittenberg), L. Goncalves, Unraced...

12. Lunar Tide (Johar, Laramie Moon), H. Theriot, 1 start...

I think the two spot is fine for Lentenor, In a field of mostly unraced colts, It is very un-predictable, He just has to get ahead of the one and three colts, I will say he will hit the turn in front, I LOVE the fact that Julien Leparoux is on him, If everyone remembers, Julien worked Nicanor at Keeneland a couple of times last year when Nicanor was there...

IMO, Lentenor will be the favorite, Positive Split should be the second choice, Watch out for Albany Road, KD is riding him, I respect KD, But he seems to be a thorn in the side of the Brothers...

Yes, I will be going to Keeneland :)

Greg J. 29 Oct 2009 10:41 AM

Good explanation of horse growth by da3hoss, thanks for that.  I am glad the Jacksons are giving Nicanor plenty of growing time for those leg bones.  That other owner named Jackson (ha ha) mentioned letting his horse have some growing time too.  Woss'name ... Rachel something or other! ;-) Maybe you've seen her run?

Best of luck and safe racing to our Lentenor.  Hope he breaks his maiden first time out like big brother Barbaro.  I will be watching on TV and hoping to see some nice photos from other FOBs posted here.

GreyK 29 Oct 2009 10:51 AM

So excited.  Wish I were there, but I will set my DVR to record the race. Good Luck Lentenor.

I will be looking forward to Nicanor's next race at Gulfstream.

And does the baby have a name yet?

RhondaH 29 Oct 2009 12:24 PM

da3hoss:

I guess I knew some of that (not mature untill 5)... but it still boggles the mind a little, since Nicanor already seems so tall. lol

Wonder how tall he'll be? : )

Arem 29 Oct 2009 1:18 PM

Duly noted! Be safe Lentenor. Julien I'm sure will take good care of our boy.

MONTANA 29 Oct 2009 2:02 PM

Right on!  Lentenor is gonna blow the horses off the track. :) Julien Rocks!

May God be with all of the connections that day and carry both Julien and Lenty to the wire first and safely.  ♥Lentenor♥

stardustyrose 29 Oct 2009 5:17 PM

The weather forcast for Lexington for Sat. is 70% chance of rain with the high in the 60's. What are the chances of Lentenor being scratched since this the race is on dirt? Does anyone have an opinion? I for one will be very nervous if he isn't scratched. I hate to see horses run on those really muddy tracks. I feel that they are very dangerous for the horses footing. All it takes is one bad step or fall due to the track being slippery.

What are everybody elses opinion?

Bonnie3 29 Oct 2009 5:30 PM

Have a safe trip Lentenor.

Hope Lentenor is a quick learner, sounds like a big field for a first start.

Wondering if this race is just to get one under his belt, since he was originally supposed to go at 1-1/16 on turf until the conditions for that race changed?  Seems like a big drop back to 7 furlongs.  Just curious.  Maybe there was nothing as suitable coming up soon.

HorseFirst 29 Oct 2009 6:19 PM

Go Lentanor!  May you have wings of gold and run like the wind.  I will be there to see you gracious baby, cross that finish line in first!  Safe, sound and happy!

Heather 29 Oct 2009 7:23 PM

Ron many thanks to you too for that great article about Nicky and Lenny...just super...

Hey Greg J, where are you...I sure thank you for all video's and articles you have provided...many thanks....

Just pray a safe journey for Lenny...

Julien had 3 wins today at Keeneland and one was against Robbie Albarado who is riding in Lentenor's race.

good portent, perhaps!

Robin 29 Oct 2009 11:33 PM

Ron:  Thank you for the update and the Jackson's for sharing with us.  It great to hear that Nicanor is doing well and I am looking forward to his continuing his racing career.  Lentenor, what can I say, I'm thrilled he's racing.  I know he has the ability and talent-we all just have to see where his head is and what he does with it.  I believe he's going to do great, but we all have to wait and see.

Greg J.: it's great to have you here and I'm glad you're in a position to go and watch him.  I can't wait to hear a full report from you along with pictures.  I appreciate all you provide for us who love these boys.

God be with you Lentenor, may you have a safe, speedy trip - be well!

Barb C 30 Oct 2009 9:17 AM

Lou in TX: Keenland has a synthetic surface, not sure which type, but either way, no need to worry about mud.

Super excited for this start. I will be recording the race and I can't wait to see how he does.

Elizabeth 30 Oct 2009 10:05 AM

Positive Split seems to be the biggest threat.  Has had 2 second place finishes and Robbie Albarado is aboard.  Well,  Julien is aboard our Lentenor, and with his bloodlines and talent, he could blow them all away.  Just come home safely, baby boy.  You are so loved.

Marigold 30 Oct 2009 10:15 AM

Lou in TX.,

Hello, Lentenor's race is on Keeneland's All-Weather track(Polytrack), The rain will not effect it, I believe Mr. Matz was quite aware of the chance of rain, Which entered into his decision to enter him in this race.  Remember, Lentenor NEEDED to get into a race, This might not have been first preference, But, I am positive he will do fine!  Positive Split was made the morning line favorite at 2-1, Lentenor was second choice at 5-1, I will guarantee by post time, Lentenor will easily be the favorite, I would guess maybe 2-1 or Even money...

Greg J. 30 Oct 2009 10:41 AM

Rooting for Lentenor and wish him the best tomorrow.

Anxious to hear all the details of his first race.

Hope he enjoys his big day.

GinnieJ 30 Oct 2009 11:27 AM

Lentenor sure is a beauty. I can't help but htink of Ms. Jackson's comments about her first vivit with him and even then, we all knew he was special. Lentenor, run with the wind and be safe.

Kim 30 Oct 2009 12:00 PM

Best of luck Lentenor, wish I could be at the races but I have previous plans.  Will be rooting for you!

You are not forgotten Nicanor, heal well and the best to you too.

LOVE to both boys and especially to our beloved Barbaro - he must be so proud!

Must mention Babynor and the little filly to be, everyone is so loved and cherished.

Shirley in KY 30 Oct 2009 12:55 PM

go lenny go! hope he does well and has a safe trip. blessings to the connections.

christy tate 30 Oct 2009 1:56 PM

Lou in Tx,

you stated " I hate to see horses run on those really muddy tracks. I feel that they are very dangerous for the horses footing. All it takes is one bad step or fall due to the track being slippery.

What are everybody elses opinion? "

.....................

The KEE track is Poly and well drained, probably one of the best

drainage in the business.  Weather should not be a factor.

Greg J,

The reason Lentenor may be the favorite is the people (FOB and others who normally don't wager) buying win tickets with no intention of cashing them as souvenirs.  I doubt there will be that many "Lenny Jackson" fans there to upset his realistic odds.  Most of the FOB that could go to Lex were there last weekend.

May they all run safe and the best horse win.

Julio 30 Oct 2009 2:41 PM

Lentenor starting in the fall as a 2 yr old...lets hope he runs like the wind and then everyone can call us fools for getting baby Barbaro Derby FEVER!!! Yes!

JDsfan 30 Oct 2009 3:45 PM

Lou:

Lentanor is not racing on dirt for this race.  Keenland only has all weather track so no worry if it does rain.

lobieb 30 Oct 2009 3:51 PM

Usually Leparoux is a come-from-behind rider, so don't be suprised or worried if u see lentenor at or near the back of the pack early, cause he'll be coming home fast in the end

Bryan 30 Oct 2009 4:27 PM

Lou in TX, keenland does not have a dirt track. The race is scheduled for 7 furlongs on the polytrack, which is the main track surface at keenland.  Polytrack doesn't retain water or turn to mud, so even if it rains the track will be fine.

Bryan 30 Oct 2009 4:31 PM

Good luck Lentenor. Be safe and be happy!!! It is so exciting to see yet another Barbaro brother on the track. I just moved to Florida and can't wait to see Nicanor at Gulfstream early next year!!! Sending positive thoughts for Lentenor's debut!!!Take Care Big guy run well and come home safe. Good luck to Michael and the Jackson's.

Lenny you were wonderful! You'll get them next time!!

Rosie 31 Oct 2009 3:11 PM

I just finished watching Lentenor's race....he finished third but I think he got into a bit of "trouble" in the stretch but finished VERY strong nonetheless.  Gosh he looks like Barbaro!  Brought a tear to my eye.  I don't think he's going to be a maiden very long.  Can't wait until his next race!!!!

CarolinaJude 31 Oct 2009 3:14 PM

3rd after being boxed in..so proud!

MJ 31 Oct 2009 3:22 PM

Good job for our boy and am so proud, third is nothing to sneeze about and he won't be a maiden for long by the looks.  Think he was in trouble behind a wall of horses and think Julian waited to long to get him out from behind.  Can't wait for his second start now which will probably come when they get to Florida. But was a good race from him to make us all proud.

lobieb 31 Oct 2009 3:23 PM

Considering the ride,I think he

did very well.  Once Julian got

him off the rail he gathered

nicely and ran well.  Good for

him!!  He shows talent(well we

were sure he would!!)and I am

over the moon!

Zia 31 Oct 2009 3:23 PM

A very respectable third for a first time starter, in my humble opinion.  If he'd had a chance to get out from behind horses, sooner he might have gotten second, but he sure did look good.  The difference in size between him and the #7 horse was most amazing when I watched them approaching the starting gate - the other horse looked like a giant, making Lentenor appear to be so small.  He is a lovely colt, though, and I will always love him and wish him the best.  He'll get the winner's circle next time!

txbarbfan 31 Oct 2009 3:26 PM

So, he didnt win, big deal third is not to shabby for his debut. I kept thinking how much he looks like barbaro. Physically, he looked great, but like nicanor, clearly he was very uncomfortable on the inside. He ran much better when he got clear of traffic. It looked like he had to check up about half way down the backstretch. Way to go lentenor, you did very well, but i think you need more distance.

MDFANOFRACING 31 Oct 2009 3:33 PM

I think he needs a longer race

Good-looking third, esp for a first start. Obviously he was behind a wall of horses and got going too late, but he sure got going and was well clear of the rest of the pack. He also was not nearly as rank at the start of the race as Nicanor was for his first start.

I think we all realize that this family likes distance. He will appreciate more ground.

Such a beautiful colt! He was meticulously groomed and looked gorgeous.

nonnonheinous 31 Oct 2009 3:52 PM

letenor..what a bad ride ..change jocks....need more aggressive rider

warren 31 Oct 2009 4:04 PM

I think this was a nice run for Lentenor.  Julian did not seem to have much room to maneuver throughout the race.  Seemed to take him back once and the hole he may have been going for to get outside before the turn closed up on him.  Lentenor rushed a bit in the beginning, like Nicanor. Julian seemed to be having a "conversation"with him for a while.

After being checked back- and you could see his stride shorten- Julian aimed for one hole coming off the far turn, that closed, then he asked Lentenor to go wide and he handily did, I think, for a young horse in his first race.  He asked Lentenor to try again, gave him maybe two taps with the whip, I didn't see more, and Lentenor responded.  He did not, to me, get back into full stride until almost at the wire.

It think that was a VERY nice effort considering the problems he encountered and yes, I think he'll like more distance.  The question now is if he does have running room in front of him, will he respond to the jockey and relax and wait.

All in all, I would not fault Julian for this ride.  Coming out the #2 spot and having Lentenor rushing at first did not allow Julian to give him his best race.  Besides, the field was packed, 12 horses.

Way to go Lentenor, I see nothing in this race that doesn't suggest that with better racing luck, we'll get a better picture.

HorseFirst 31 Oct 2009 4:06 PM

Fantastic, Lentenor!  You got caught up in traffic, but it didn't deter you at all.  Evidently there were lots of your fans betting that your maiden race would be successful because you went off at 6/5 odds, and paid $4.80 to show.  And, can I say that, you were definitely the most handsome boy on the track.

Texas Two-Step 31 Oct 2009 4:06 PM

Nice first start Lentenor!

Where might I see a video??

Arem 31 Oct 2009 4:11 PM

Great job Lentenor.  Looked good, not a lot of room w/ the traffic you encountered.  Good race.

I was impressed with his first effort, especially how professional he was on the track.  This is an intelligent horse who knew what he was doing.  Congrats to Michael and Peter.  This family has talent.

MJ 31 Oct 2009 4:35 PM

3rd colt from Dynaformer and LVR and 3rd place.  WOW cool!!!!!!  :)

stardustyrose 31 Oct 2009 4:37 PM

He was so calm and poised. It was calming to look at him. "He won'tbe a Maiden for long" (Matt Carothers,TVG).

Marigold 31 Oct 2009 4:39 PM

Considering the circumstances, a workmanlike third seems somewhat encouraging.  A lousy trip, where he checked outside in the lane; the fact that he appeared to be the only shipper (at least from the PPs most others worked or raced at keen or cd); and it was not the preferred distance.  Not to mention the connections of the top 2 finishers are extremly high on their colts (both prev. raced), this could set up an exciting winter for his fans.  Throw in Matz's low debut% as well as that of Dynaformer, and who knows.  One comment mentioned before which cannot be challenged:  the Matz barn puts out an unbelievable, beautifully groomed horse, always.

brettzky99 31 Oct 2009 4:45 PM

Really good beginning, he will learn and improve. No doubt it!

The horse that won ran second to Kera's Kitten, who's Breeder cup bound. The winner was in his third race, lots of experience vs a first timer like Lentenor. We can be very upbeat regarding Lentenors' performance considering how well he ran. Nice gallop out too, more distance is definetly warranted. So very, very proud of him and his connections. Wasn't he in wonderful condition? He gleamed!  Waiting for his next outing will be difficult now that we've seen him run.

Dona 31 Oct 2009 5:01 PM

I think Lentenor showed alot of maturity in handling the crowd and finishing where he did in his first race a showing full of furture promise and he did look very handsome!!!

Tracy 31 Oct 2009 5:02 PM

WOW!! Nice race Lentenor. He obviously has great potential. Even after being boxed in, he kept his cool and went for it. I think for a first race, he did great. And was it my imagination or does he look just like Barbaro? He looked absolutely gorgeous - healthy, big, strong, gleaming coat, what a beautiful boy!!! Congratulations to his connections for doing such a great job with this most special boy.

Ida Lee 31 Oct 2009 5:22 PM

Thanks for the analysis HorseFirst! It was very inlightening!

I think it was a good race. Sure we wanted him to win, but he did well. : )

Can't wait to see pictures!

Arem 31 Oct 2009 5:24 PM

Nice race Lentenor!  Been waiting a while to see you race, and 3rd place is fine with me since it was a safe run!  That is the main thing!  Be safe! You looked great!

nannie284 31 Oct 2009 5:40 PM

Good try Lentenor. Bad ride by Leparoux. Coming down the streach he had plenty of room to get through where he was and follow the #3 horse, the winner.

Who said they guarantee Lentenor would easily be the favorite at post time. He went off the 4th favorite, at 8-1. I think it was the same person who said, "Mark my words, Nicanor will run in the Virginia Derby". Please stop with the predictions and do what you do best, pictures and films.

Don 31 Oct 2009 5:52 PM

He looked AMAZING!!!

I can't believe how mature he has gotten. He so would've won if it wasn't for the traffic on the rail.

Courtney of OH 31 Oct 2009 6:42 PM

There is now a slide show of Lentenor's debut in the race story: www.bloodhorse.com/.../barbaros-brother-lentenor-third-in-debut

Blood-Horse Staff 31 Oct 2009 7:02 PM

Kudos to the Matz operation for having Lentenor looking gorgeous for his debut. Mr. Matz runs a first class racehorse outfit, just as he did with his showhorses.

I think the Lentenor had a very difficult first race.  Trapped down on the rail, checked, between horses and then swung out.  Lentenor did not seem to be intimidated and did his best to follow the jock's instructions. He ran on like a good horse with a difficult trip and even when soundly beaten.

I think he got quite an education in his first race.

IMHO, in a less crowded field, a bit more distance and a cleaner trip, Lentenor's fans are going to see a winner.

Turnbackthealarm 31 Oct 2009 7:14 PM

Rough racing luck in his debut, but he obviously shows promise.  I don't blame Leparoux for not cramming him through any gaps (if there even was room near the rail) - it was his first time out there, after all, and there's no telling how an inexperienced horse will handle that!

CJ 31 Oct 2009 7:20 PM

Ida Lee  I saw alot of barbaro today especially when Lentenor was parading out i had to remember it was lentenor not barbaro.  Our boy ran very good i am proud of his first race and i saw nothing but a very good race.  Of all the boys i see alot of barbaro in Lentenor then anybody else.  At times i see it in Nicanor i don't see it at all in the baby that was born.

jclsonFan of Nicanor 31 Oct 2009 7:30 PM

O MY GOD YOU GUYS LOOK AT THE SLIDE SHOW FROM BLOODHORSE STAFF  IT IS LIKE WE GOT BARBARO BACK.  IT IS LIKE HE IS REINCARNATED.  I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT IS LENTENOR NOT BARBARO.

jclsonFan of Nicanor 31 Oct 2009 7:35 PM

Don,

Nicanor was suppose to run in the VA Derby until he scratched 1 day before.  Maybe you should have the facts before you put someone down

MJ 31 Oct 2009 8:29 PM

I was so impressed by how professional Lentenor was today.  He was one calm, cool and collected gentleman.  I wasn't thrilled with the ride (as compared to Rosie's on Nicanor) but it can be considered a good learning experience. I don't think this was the ideal length for him and he seemed to be back peddling a bit there when he needed to be coming on, not giving up ground.  Perhaps then he wouldn't have got boxed in like he did. However, a debut race is new for the horse AND the jockey riding that horse.  Noone knows how they are going to run in a true race.  I do believe he will rate better than Nicanor but I think he has a lot different style of racing than Nicanor as well.

Don, I think you could learn something from Lentenor.  Above all, being a gentleman is always impressive. Being negative and critical of others mentioned in your previous posts just makes you look petty and jealous.  Respect is earned by being kind and thoughtful of others. Don't be hating just because GregJ has earned that respect. We all obviously appreciate GregJ's input,  he's earned our respect.  I don't care if he has inside info, makes predictions that may or may not happen, has opinions others may disagree with, he's always a gentleman and respectful of others.

BGKY 31 Oct 2009 9:00 PM

Amazing race Lentenor, came out strong from getting boxed in. Very impressed with a third place. :) Its pretty amazing how Lentenor looks just like Barbaro, lets see where Lentenor goes. :)

Katrina 31 Oct 2009 9:12 PM

I thought to myself, at least, come home safely, next, learn something, hopefully, finish on the board.  Got all 3!!  He'll be a winner in no time!  Very poised young horse -- his poise was calming for me.  I was a basket case until I saw him.  And, he can run!  Great Day for the Dyna/Rouge Family yet again.  These colts have talent.  No doubt, Babynor/Marcano will, too.

Marigold 31 Oct 2009 9:17 PM

"He does look like Barbaro in many ways." The star on his face is smaller. It looks like a "arrowhead" to me. He showed maturity with his first race. Nothing seemed to bother him. He certainly is a beautiful horse.

I would bring him home to my barn anytime!!!

Great Start Lentenor~!!

Linda / Maryland 31 Oct 2009 9:26 PM

And Don.

I do not think you belong in this Blog. Here, we love the family of Barbaro and are here to show our support. Sarcasm never got anyone anywhere. If you don't love them why don't you go type somewhere else.

Linda / Maryland 31 Oct 2009 9:29 PM

CJ

Check out the race again. Lentenor had plenty of room to follow the #3 horse. And he would not have been cramming the horse near the rail.

MJ

I know the facts and know Nicanor was scratched. Maybe it should have been said that he would be entered in the race and not that he would run. They don't run until they are in the gate and it is opened.

Anyway, I agree Lentenor needs a longer race and that he will do well in the future.

Don 31 Oct 2009 10:14 PM

OK, I watched the race yet again.  Lentenor was acting up just a bit in the gate when the bell rang.  Got out a tad behind, then I think he rushed just like Nicanor did before Julian's "talk" with him took hold.  By then, Julian did not have a lot of room and keep in mind that he broke out of the number 2 stall so he was pretty much going to be on the inside.  To avoid that, Julian would have had to fight him right out of the gate to swing him really wide and run wide. Probably, his best bet was to hope the colt got some racing room while he "talked" with him and they came to an understanding.  If Lentenor learns to listen, it will be a good thing.

I'm pretty sure I saw Julian look over to his right just at the beginning of the far turn and for a moment, there was some room to come out but at least two horses were coming up quickly and IMHO, it would have been dangerous to try to take any horse out let alone a young, unknown colt like Lentenor.

Around the turn heading into the stretch, it looked like a hole opened up ahead of him but just as quickly closed again so Julian took him out wide.  It took Lentenor a while to get going again and the article was right, he lost some ground by heading to the left once he got clear.

If you watch that stretch run off the far turn, the leaders are kind of running all over the place.  What you'd expect, I guess, with a field this inexperienced.

I think Julian gave him the best ride he could and hopefully, in Lentenor's next race, he'll have some clues as to what he's supposed to do.  All in all, I think it was a pretty good first race, considering.

HorseFirst 31 Oct 2009 10:36 PM

Secreatriat finished 4th in his first start and Clem Florio screamed from the press box.."that's next year's derby winner! Man O' War got beaten in a similar "boxed in" fashion. Lentenor was boxed in the herd of stampeding horses, and looked like he hung at the end a little (he wasn't gaining). However, he will improve, doesn't seem to need blinkers, and 3rd is better than Nicanor's 10th.

Lentenor will break his maiden in a longer race with fewer horses. He certainly has speed, and rates well, and is faster than Nicanor. Nicanor earned a 104 Beyer in his best effort. I suspect Lentenor's will be 115-120...Matz has a champion this time.

jon 31 Oct 2009 10:55 PM

Great race Lentenor!!!

Remember  Jill Stephens said Lentenor is a cautious horse. Once he figures things out, he will be first. I do also think that like Nicanor, Lentenor needs a longer race.

Thanks Ron and staff for the updates and the slide show

Kathy 01 Nov 2009 12:15 AM

MGKY,thank you.

No surprise that Lentenor isn't happy on the rail, few of the first timers are. Leparoux had a chance to move him to the front right out of the gate,it was clear, but he pulled him in. I assume he was trying to relax him and it back fired. Barbaro wasn't fond of the rail either and it looks like a family thing. Not to mention that it's easier to keep out of trouble on the outside. Get our Rosie, she's perfect for our boys!

Zia 01 Nov 2009 12:30 AM

good job Lentenor, the way you run today i know i will see next year for the triple crown... he got everything BUT the jockey! i hope they change the jockey. he got a good chance of winning that race IMO... put AR Napravnik or Edgar Prado...

Kankaloo 01 Nov 2009 1:42 AM

Did anyone else think that it was extremely close quarters when Lentenor was asked to go wide? In watching the video, it seems he was inches from the horses in front and back of him, while he was moving laterally to the outside.  Maybe it is just the angle and there is more room there, but that looked risky, especially for new horses.  Like to hear from one of the knowledgeable commenters.  All in all, I was glad to see Lentenor show maturity.  All that traffic did not keep him from trying once he got free.

FOB4EVER 01 Nov 2009 4:24 AM

I finally got to look at the slide show and what really

struck me was the big difference in Lentenor's body lang

uage! After the race he had that proud confidence that

we saw in Barbaro. He really "got" it I think.

If you go to http://www.alexbrownracing.com and click on October to get to the right page, then click on photos from Lenteor's race.  They are actually stunning and most are up close and personal.  Enjoy as much as I did and my he looks to much like Barbaro in them.

So very proud of Lentenor, and so happy the Jacksons were there to see their handsome colt perform in such a professional way.

Cheers to Lentenor and to Julien.

Thanks to HorseFirst for posting race details, and to B-H for the wonderful photo gallery.

Lentenor was positively stunning in his looks and temperment during the race.

When does Gulfstream and other Florida tracks open?

I believe that Lenteror looks so much like Barbaro that I was somewhat startled... such a beauty. Thank You!!! for all the great comments ( I read them all )

The slideshow of Lennys race is great..Thank You

HorseFirst, enjoyed reading your thoughts...Thanks....

Ragsy 01 Nov 2009 10:06 AM

Nice analysis, HorseFirst.  It was a promising first effort.  Lentenor reminds me of Barbaro that age in his gorgeous looks, if not the burst of speed - and that may come in time and with a better trip.  It's exciting to see another brother begin his career.  Cheers to Nicanor and I look forward to seeing him at age four.  The extra growing time can only help a Dynaformer colt.  It was a good day for all friends and fans of Barbaro.  On to Gulfstream!

In thinking this through, you have the weather, the track conditions, the other horses and the jockey all to consider and deal with and it is your first race and you are in a strange place with lots of people watching you and you give it your all, but you can't completely control the outcome. You did just great Lentenor,we are proud of you and love you.

Marigold 01 Nov 2009 12:02 PM

Way to go, Lenny!-Despite all of the obstacles you stayed cool and did what was asked of you. No wonder Mrs. Jackson felt eerie after her  first encounter with you!  You are so much like precious Barbaro reincarnated.  Keep his classy demeanor and the future is boundless. Congrats to all of the wonderful connections.

Bonnie3 01 Nov 2009 12:10 PM

I was very impressed by how professional Lentanor was from the time we saw him until he was led away - and he had a great gate handler. As he was standing there amazed at a new experience, the gate handler was very gentle and when he put his hand on him to let him know "it's OK." So important for babies to get a good experience (instead of hustling them around then into the gate). Then he went into the gate and stood like an old pro.

He was a little slow out of the gate and got boxed in. I'd rather see that than to have him fighting to run off to the front like so many babies do going full speed (and some jockeys and trainers hustle for). He backed off when it got tight, but appeared to not get flustered too much (that's such a scary place for a baby) - just not aggressive. Good boy.

Julien L. rode him just right for his first race. To me the whole point was to let him learn and have that good experience. Things didn't go perfectly, but the horse would have come away tense and maybe afraid if he'd been hustled and smacked to gain a placing.

He will come from this race enjoying his job I think and get to learn he can run on the inside. It brought tears to my eyes to see him perform so professionally. He's a good boy, and looks to have ability to be one of the good ones. I really like his sweeping stride. He's got a lovely walk, to me the mark of a good one.

Oh, and he is gorgeous (care and physique!) Congratulations to an operation that takes such pride in horsemanship. It's obvious his groom takes great care of him.

Nancy 01 Nov 2009 12:56 PM

Our boy Lentenor did wonderful yesterday. Third is not bad for a first time start. In fact he looked like he new exactly what to do. He has great promise!!

I was so happy to see that the Jackson's did make it to the race. Headly Bell was also there. He has a great team behind him.

There are some great pictures of Lentenor before the race on Bloodhorse.com under the Race News article. He looks so very handsome even with his cover on. Hope he got lots of peppermints after his race.

I wonder if he could race again at the end of November at Church Hill Downs. They started racing today thru the 30th. Maybe that's too soon for him to race again.

I'm just glad to see him come home safe and sound. GREAT JOB LENTENOR!! WE ALL LOVE YOU.

Lou in TX 01 Nov 2009 1:22 PM

Arem....on Bloodhorse.com if you go down the page you'll find video's of all the races. It's under "Lentenor's Debut."  It shows the his whole race starting from out of the gate.  Enjoy!!

Lou in TX 01 Nov 2009 1:37 PM

will there be an interview with Michael after Lentenor's first race as there was after Nicanor's, please?  We're all eager to hear what Michael's assessment is.

His opinion is the most important one.

Cal Gal 01 Nov 2009 1:49 PM

Keep in mind that in the first part of the race, they were coming out of the gate on another part of the track or a chute.  For a moment, where it joins the other track, there looked like a lot of room on the inside.  At this point Lentenor is rushing pretty fast but when they get on the main track, that space on the inside dries up because there is the rail again.  Also, I don't think the other jockey's, knowing Nicanor's history of running on the front, would be inclined to let him through anyway.  When Lentenor gets up to the lead horse, he is right behind him so there was no room on the inside rail for him to go through there or I think Julian would have put him through.

I don't think it was as tight as it looks in the stretch when Lentenor came around horses or Julian would not have made that move. That angle makes things look like they are happening closer together than they are. I can imagine it was more important to get Lentenor experience then to take chances and I can just imagine what some would be saying if that move had caused problems for Lentenor in any way.  So, IMHO, Julian gave him the best ride he could and I think, from this one ride, I would use him again. Julian "talked" to Lentenor, asked him to back off, and Lentenor did.  If those two get along well, don't mess with chemistry.

Look at Julian's hands when he's not having to "discuss" who's in charge- they look soft and kind.  Notice that Lentenor does not appear to need a tongue tie, is in what looks to be a pretty mild snaffle, and is foaming nicely around his mouth.  In dressage terms, he's handling the bit just right and keeping a moist mouth.  If this horse is that kind with his mouth, I would want a jockey with kind hands on him.

I may get kickback for this, but I think Lentenor has better conformation in the neck/shoulder/withers connection than Barbaro.  Yet to see a current conformation shot.  Of course, they are all lovely!

It is so cool to compare and see the similarities and differences in these full siblings.

Thank you Bloodhorse for the quick action getting up pictures and video of the race.

The photos that Mary took at Kleeneland of Lentenor and her visit that was written is absloutely wonderful. All FOB's ought to go the Alex Browning site and read it and see her pictures.

lobieb ...thanks for the web site.

We'll have more pics to see when Greg J posts his. Again I'm so glad the Jackson's were there along with Headley Bell. That was a great day for Lenetnor. He even got a kiss on the nose from Mrs. Jackson after the race. They are a very special family.

Oh My!! This just left me breathless! I knew deep in my heart that darling Lenny would do well, because his big brother was watching over him! And that's not all - I could tell he could win just by looking at him! It's too bad that MM didn't enter him in the Breeder's Cup, because he would surely win! I was telling all my friends in the Walter Farley book club about the race, and they assured me that they were root root rooting for him! I just love this - the excitement, the hope for the future, and the joy of being a FOB. I think it's soon time for me to knit a new saddleblanket for Lenny! My best wishes to you all!!

I too would love to know what Michael and Peter thought of his effort.  Julien's evaluation is also important.

Lobiob i looked at those pictures they are amazing.   Look at those and look at Barbaros pictures.  all we need in edgar prado riding Lentenor.   I am having a hard time looking at Lentanor and not cry i keep seeing Barbaro.

jclson(fan of nicanor) 01 Nov 2009 10:00 PM

Julien rode a poor race on Lentenor yesterday.  He got him stuck in traffic, making him have to swing 4 wide at the turn.  The distance was too short, also, he was getting rolling once around the horses and a longer race will suit him perfectly.  Lentenor should break his maiden next time out, IF the jockey rides better and the distance is longer.  At this point, I easily see him at the Kentucky Derby in May.  He's so much more mature than Nicanor was at the beginning and seems to be more competitive.

Rechelle 01 Nov 2009 10:30 PM

Thank you HorseFirst for your helpful explanation.  You see details that many of us do not catch or understand.  It adds to my enjoyment of the athletes and the sport.

FOB4EVER 01 Nov 2009 11:32 PM

Lentenor, we are so proud of you.  You looked so handsome and acted so mature.  You can tell he is a horse that listens to his handlers.  Over all I think it was a great race, a positive race for Lentenor.  Lentenor had a good first time learning experience.

Stardusty Rose,

Wonderful video!  Great job--very professional and a poignant tribute to both Barbaro and Edgar Prado.  I'm sure if Edgar saw it, he was touched.  I know I was.

after alot of thought i believe this race was for his future mm knew it was to short! seem to relax a bit and was hitting his best stride late at a 1 1/8th he wins by 10! amazing how much his gait is like barbaro's

this colt has a big future ahead of him  the ride was probably as instructed let him relax keep him out of trouble etc.very proud to be a fob and family!!

tc01 02 Nov 2009 8:00 AM

Linda / Maryland: I think he looks like his momma. lol.

Both Nicanor and Lentenor do look a little bit like Barbaro. Not spitting image maybe, but there is a slight resemblance. : )

Arem 02 Nov 2009 9:52 AM

Mary on the Alex Brown site  said the Jackson's were very pleased with the way Lentenor ran, but would love some comments from them up close and personal. I'd also like to know what Julien thought.

Ron, is there any chance you could get this info for the FOB's? I know we would all be very appreciative of your help.

We all know your head is in the Breeder's Cup right now so maybe someone on your staff could help us out. Just a suggestion.

Hope everybody has a great week. I know I will because our Lentenor is home safe and sound. And he did great!!!

Lou in TX 02 Nov 2009 10:18 AM

Is anyone ready for an unbias opinion on the race?

In the post-parade Lentenor looked stiff, especially in the hind legs, and definitely in his hind left leg.  Lentenor was not "on his toes", either.

As the horses were entering the gate, it was clear that Lentenor was a mid-sized horse compared to at least half the field.  I think Lent's legs were shorter than most of the competition.

Obviously, not the best start out of the gate.  Also, the horse pulled Julien up the front and had to be held and stopped as Lentenor was definitely quite rank, and expectedly looked a little unexperienced with a lot of company in front of him.

Julien made a great move around the turn for a horse with an inside draw, Julien gave Lentenor a chance, and gave Lentenor clear day light, but didn't Lentenor didn't bite when given the chance to run home.

The winner looked clearly the best, and I didn't see Lentenor dig in, or want it, at all.  As many of us know it is one thing to get beat when a horse wants it and wants to run, that can be fixed teaching a drive horse to win next time out.  But in my opinion, Lentenor is going to have to be sent to a lesser track to learn to win, like Nicanor.

This may be a hard pill to swallow to all of the fans of Barbaro.  But it is a honest opinion of what took place from a person that has no problems critiqueing even their favorite horses.  If anything I hope this all helps some of you to watch what will hopefully be a progression of Lentenor, because right now there is a lot of work left to do if things aren't changed after that race.

A 3rd is respectable, definitely!

You know, this happens time and again on this blog, "Only Edgar can ride the siblings!" then Jose doesn't do too badly then Rosie gets a win on Nicanor and she's the flavor of the moment. (And she didn't fight Nicanor and was lucky enough to have racing room)

You ride the best fit jockey for the horse you think you can find and you are vulnerable to availability.

I think Julien did fine.  The only time he had to break out of the bunch was right out of the gate and if it were me, I wouldn't want to be teaching a youngster in his first race that it's, "Break, go right."  Especially coming out of the # 2 stall.

You teach a horse each time you ride it, interact with it.  Each and every time.

Lentenor pulled a Nicanor when he got going and began rushing to the front.  But he didn't get there in time and the hole closed in front of him.  Julien had to get him slowed down and listening or there would have been trouble.  When they got to the rail on the main track that hole closed up, it was never really there in the first place and the horses coming outside Lentenor made double sure of that.  After that, Julien had no chance until he pulled him wide around in the stretch.  This was a short race, too.  A big field of a bunch of youngsters all trying to figure it out at the same time.  It was enough that Julien got him home safe and that Lentenor seemed to gain confidence from it.

Lentenor was acting up just a bit before the gate opened.  You can see him attempt to look left, like he heard something, then kind of backed up a bit, then the gate opened.  He went to rushing, so he took options away from Julien, not that with this size field and post position he had many.  Besides, I think the jocks remember Nicanor and don't think they would let Lentenor loose on the lead.

I think Julien did the best he could under the circumstances and I don't get the immediate bashing by some because Lentenor didn't win this race.  I don't see anything that Julien did wrong or could have done otherwise.

Besides, who knows who will ride at Gulstream, if Lentenor races there?  It's up to which jockeys are at the meet and availability.

I think Julien gave him a good ride and got some communication going.  He was confident enough that the horse would listen to him when he asked him to go wide.

I think the lessons learned will serve Lentenor well in his next race.  I hope he remembers to listen.

wow! he looks sooooo mcuh like his big brother, Barbaro!

horsefan4life 02 Nov 2009 5:51 PM

rose, I LOVED your video -- just wonderful and VERY moving.  thank you for doing it.

Lentenor was wonderful -- a star in the making. IMHO he will make us all gasp very soon.  Michael and Peter have "another one".

Marigold 02 Nov 2009 8:52 PM

Bonjour Mon Cheri Lentenor!

Great that you came in third. Good for you, Lentenor! This is a great start.

Next time you will do much, much better.

I just read that your brother, Nicanor, won't be racing again until early next year. He will do well, too, over time.

Lots of love to you, Nicanor, Margeno, and the little filly.

Lise from Maine 02 Nov 2009 9:39 PM

I was not a fan of the ride Lent received either, but please can we quit bashing JL? There were eleven horse total and Lent was in the two slot. If he had broken well JL could've done a lot more with him, but he didn't. By the time Lent got into gear there wasn't any real way JL could move him off the rail. When a whole finally opened as soon as Lent went for it, it closed, forcing him to go around horses halfway down the stretch. By that time it was too late for JL to do anything. That is what happens if you have an inside post in a big field and don't break well. I saw a few errors of JL's, but honestly, though I didn't like the ride I'm not going to critsise a guy who has to make split second decisions while controlling a green 1200lbs animal. Give the guy a break.

LDP 02 Nov 2009 10:04 PM

WOW, He looked AMAZING!! When he finally got a lane he hit another gear. If he hadnt got caught in traffic... I cant wait to see him run again.

I cant get over how beautiful he looks, just like Barbaro.

H-ROB 02 Nov 2009 11:06 PM

Has anyone seen a beyer speed figure for Lentenor?

MJ 02 Nov 2009 11:19 PM

Here are the comments from Sally, the mamger, at Fair Hill about Lentenor:

"For those of you who don’t know, Lentenor, Barbaro’s 2 year old full brother, ran very well to finish third at Keeneland on Saturday in his first race. He has already returned to Fair Hill and later this month will be leaving for Florida for what promises to be an exciting season."

Just wanted to share. It comes from someone who knows what's going on at Fair Hill. I imagine they will ship both Nicanor and Lentenor together to Fla. We already know Nicanor will race at Gulfstream next year.

Catch ya later...

Lou in TX 02 Nov 2009 11:53 PM

tencatsandlivesalone,

Third place in a Maiden Special Weight, and you think if MM had entered him in the BC "he would surely win"?

He ran a good race, possibly with better traffic he could finished first or second, but to say he would surely win?

Please, we know you love this horse, but be realistic.

Thank You.

I need to clear somethng up.  It has been said that Edgar Prado requested for me to make that video.  This is not correct.  I asked Edgar what his favorite song was and that I would make him a video to that song.  It was ME that asked him.  NOT him that asked me.  He sent me the song after I offered to make him the video, he did not request for me to do it.  Just wanted to clear this up.  :)  Here is the vid again.  Remember I ASKED HIM what he liked.  ;-)

stardustyrose 03 Nov 2009 10:56 AM

I checked back and found that Dynaformer took three tries to break maiden.

Saratoga 8/23/87  Race 2  Maiden Special Weight

Belmont Park 8/03/87  Race 4  Maiden Special Weight

Belmont Park 7/17/87  Race 5  Maiden Special Weight

And La Ville Rouge also took three tries to break maiden.

Belmont Park 10/09/98  Race 1  Maiden Special Weight

Saratoga 8/30/98  Race 2  Maiden Special Weight

Saratoga 8/16/98  Race 6  Maiden Special Weight

And maybe one of the experts can chime in, but it doesn't appear to be very easy to find just the right jockey for a horse's first race.

And since Sire and Dam of these Barbaro Brother's managed to eke out very nice careers and continue to do well for themselves, I still have faith in all of them. Didn't Headley Bell say that Dynaformer produces high quality foals with Carson City mares?

I read a historical chart on Barbaro's maiden. He apparently was hard to load, broke sharp to chase leader outside. Kind of interesting that the brothers like to take the lead early and go outside.

Kathy 03 Nov 2009 11:07 AM

What remains to be learned is what Michael and Julien thought of Lentenor's first effort.  AND how he came out of the race.

Marigold 03 Nov 2009 3:37 PM

Horse didn't show much and the rider didn't do much.Horse looks very skinny almost like a oversized pony, put him away for a few months to grow.Third is better then 4th but the jockey has to be aggressive not passive like the first race.

2 time player of the year 03 Nov 2009 6:12 PM

Good effort should be a lock in the future.Don you have a right to your opinion.Greg J does a lot of predicting and boosting - you know the type.

The Phantom 03 Nov 2009 6:19 PM

Good job Lentenor!!!

I was wondering if they might not rather put him on the grass next time out, because of how Nicanor disliked the surface. Barbaro had the grass before the dirt. What is everybody else's opinion?

hannah 03 Nov 2009 9:53 PM

All of the comments above are very interesting and informative and I am happy to read all of them. I think Lentenor did well for his first race, third is not bad. He learned a lot and will race better each race. He is beautiful and charming and most of all healthy after the race, which is the most inportant thing for all of us.

We all want him to win, I am sure.

He does look his mom quite a bit. Just like Barbaro did.

I just soak up the pictures-Keep them coming!!!

Thanks Everyone including BH for the fast video, slide show and  keeping this blog.

Linda/Maryland 03 Nov 2009 10:19 PM

I think Mr. Matz wasn't looking for a win so much as a good first effort to see what Lentenor's style and capabilities are.  So, he probably told the jockey not to push him, just to let him do his thing but keep him out of trouble.  These debuts are probably as much for the trainers edification as  they are for the horse.

Marigold 04 Nov 2009 3:18 PM

Greg J.  and all FOB's.  The naysayers are back. :)  Some people just cannot help themselves.  Must be a really boring life.

♥Lentenor♥

stardustyrose 04 Nov 2009 7:30 PM

Congratulations to our Lentenor.  He and Julien did very well considering they got caught in the traffic jam. Maybe a post position in the middle rather than the ends may help, that way as soon as the gates open they rocket to the front of the pack. Lentenor showed a very strong finish as soon as he got out of that jam.  The horse has a lot of stamina and is a strong finisher.  All in all he did very well and is learning the ropes.

Chris K 04 Nov 2009 8:09 PM

I hope Nicky becomes better and great to hear he got bigger I hope Lenty shows how good he can be so go Nicky and Lenty!!!!!!!

horselover 04 Nov 2009 8:58 PM

Greg J... Hey, where are our pictures? I know you must have had a blast watching our big boy Lenny. Did you see the pics on the Alex Brown site? The slide show is unbelievable. The close up head shots look just like Barbaro to me. Uncanny!!

Hope everyone enjoys the Breeder's Cup. Have a great weekend all you FOB's.

stardustyrose,

very nice video. :)

BriGuy 06 Nov 2009 1:13 AM

I don't know a lot about horse racing so I have a training question: how much time do trainers give a horse between races? And after a race how many days "off" before they have a workout? I guess I was thinkg that MLB pitchers pitch on three to four days rest, so there is probably some type of schedule for horses too.

Thanks

Kim 06 Nov 2009 8:43 AM

stardustyrose,

Maybe if we ignore them...

...we can only hope!

Zia 06 Nov 2009 11:24 AM

I think it's only the beginning of something big! Lentenor looks like Barbaro. It's almost like seeing Barbaro again. Whatever happens, I hope for the best for both horses.

vevita1 06 Nov 2009 5:01 PM

Indeed, it does look like we have Barbaro back. Lenny is looking great.

I'd love to see him and Nicky race together in the future. Wouldn't that be a great race!

I also believe Lenny could do well in the longer races too. He's got good endurance and plenty of speed.

Courtney/OH 07 Nov 2009 9:44 AM

Well Folks....are you still sure RA deserves Horse of the Year?

Zenyatta got the boys today in the Classic. I think she deserves HOY. After all, she has won all 14 of her races plus the Classic.

I think it's a shame they didn't bring RA to the Breeder's Cup but it wasn't our call to make. Oh well!!

Hopefully now that all the Breede's Cup races are done we can get some news on our boys. Like when are they shipping to Fla? I know Ron has been involved with the BC so now maybe he'll have time to work on the boys. Or at least let someone else find out some news.

Hope all u FOB's won lots of money today. Catch ya later..

Lou in TX 07 Nov 2009 9:08 PM

Stardustyrose, I say that when Barbaro died he touched us certain people He chose who he wanted as his followers.  The once that naysayers are.   They do not have the love and bound we true Fans of Barbaro have.  Barbaro was a very strong loving horse he only wanted the best.  That is why certain people are naysayers.  He saw them coming and ran...

jclson(Fan of Nicanor 08 Nov 2009 9:58 AM

One must give Zenyatta credit but Horse of the Year...NO WAY! Quoting a SI.com article "Rachel Alexandra went 8 for 8 this year, including three wins over males, and became the first filly in 85 years to beat the boys in the Preakness Stakes"...that is THIS YEAR!!! Continuing from the article "Chip Woolley Jr., trainer of Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird, said before the Classic that Rachel Alexandra had already clinched Horse of the Year. "She's put up eight races on eight different racetracks, beat the boys three times and beat the fillies,'' said Woolley, whose colt finished ninth in the Classic behind Zenyatta. "The one thing everybody keeps forgetting, she beat the fillies with authority,'' he said of Rachel Alexandra. "She didn't win by a neck or a length or two lengths. She beat 'em by 20 and in a big gallop. When you look at that and you put everything together, I think she's a very deserving champion.'' Both horses were at Churchill Downs during Kentucky Derby week. Rachel Alexandra won the Derby-eve Kentucky Oaks for fillies by a record 20 1/4 lengths, while Zenyatta was scratched from her scheduled race because of a muddy track. "She could've run just the same as everybody else on the mud that day. I think everybody's forgotten about that,'' Woolley said. "She's picked her spots very carefully.''

Give me a break...it's not even close. While Zenyatta was a good race horse, Rachel Alexandra is a Great One and deserves Horse of the Year outright!!!

Gerard 09 Nov 2009 9:35 AM

Wow, Julien scored with three wins in the Breeders Cup races.  Don't know if that's a record but certainly nothing to sneeze at.  Glad to see Lentenor's first jockey do so well.  Hope he will be available some after this.  Not the only one who can ride these siblings, for sure, but I thought he got some communication going with Lentenor.

HorseFirst 09 Nov 2009 11:22 AM

By the way folks,Greg did not make it to the race. Had a "scheduling conflict."

Anyone heard anything at all from Michael or Julien about Lentenor's race?

Ron?

CalGal 09 Nov 2009 12:53 PM

jclson(Fan of Nicanor)

That is a really good way to look at it.  :)  Barbaro was/is a smart horse.  He chose US!!!  Like that.

BriGuy

Thank You.  Edgar gave me the song for that video or did I already say that LOL.  The Breeders Cup kicked me in to Neverland!  LOL

Zia.  I don't know they thrive on putting people and horses that are really good down.  Barbaro has more than enough love as does the whole family that a few naysayers isn't gonna put a dent in anything.  :)  ♥BARBARO♥

Anyone that gets on Gregs case is a pretty ignorant person.  He is a very nice FAN OF BARBARO!  :)

stardustyrose 09 Nov 2009 2:13 PM

Lou,

It's good to see that Zenyetta finally took on the boys.  I wonder if she would have run in the classic if it was outside of CA?

Rachel's owner should keep her at Churchill all next year.  Race her against the girls 3 maybe 4 times and then have her run and win the classic.  Seems that's the winning formula.

Maureen 09 Nov 2009 7:25 PM

Lou in TX:

I think that Zenyatta should get Horse of the Year, which is kind of sad because I really wanted Rachel Alexandra to get it. I am not sure Rachel Alexandra would have ever beaten Zenyatta. Both seem unbeatable but it seems like Rachel has a better chance of being beaten. Any more news of Lentenor and Nicanor??

hannah 09 Nov 2009 9:47 PM

Hey Greg J....where are your pictures of Lenny? Did you not make it to the race? Hope all is well with you.

WOW!!! What a Breeder's Cup!!!

Lou in TX 09 Nov 2009 11:03 PM

There has been speculation that Lentenor will be in the 2010 Triple Crown. After watching his race, and Secretariat's 1st race, I would say both were boxed in and simply ran out of distance. Nicanor's best beyer was 104, and already, Lentenor is seen as stronger/faster than Nicanor was. One can estrapolate from that to say that once Lentenor finds his stride, he ought to be able to run 111 and higher Beyer figures-even now. That's more than enough to compete at grade 1 level race levels.

Barring injury, we should see Lentenor take the Florida Derby route to the Derby, which would then lead him to NY and the Wood Memorial. In any case, Matz has the best 2 year old in training, and all of us are fortunate enough to know that. However, don't wish for him to be, and therefore break down like Barbaro did. Lentenor is a solid horse, and Nicanor ought to make his way back next year.

Meanwhile, let's root for Lentenor's health and continued speed. If Nicanor was toying with the competition, and Lentenor is faster, god help the 3 year old division next year.

jon 10 Nov 2009 12:14 PM

TRAINING QUESTION from Kim:

After a race, a typical horse with no problems will walk for two or three days in the shed row before going back to the track.  They will usuallly start with a mile jog and then gallop the next day.  They'll breeze again 10 days to two weeks after a race depending on the next race they are being pointed to, how much the race took out of them, etc.

If a horse bled in the race, more time is given off.  Ditto for if they are hurt.

A cheaper horse may not breeze between races which may be two weeks apart.  The better horses tend to race less and have more time off.

Did that help?

JAJ 10 Nov 2009 2:43 PM

Just watched Lentenor's race again on YouTube. That was a very good third place finish. The top 3 finishers left the rest of the herd in the dust.

CalGal 10 Nov 2009 4:25 PM

Has anyone heard if Lentenor has had a work since his debut? I haven't received any notifications so it kind of concerns me. Perhaps they are giving him some time off?

Elizabeth 12 Nov 2009 10:52 AM

Is there no one moderating this blog??

Will there be any updates at all??  How about a recap and follow up after Lentenor's debut???

Marigold 13 Nov 2009 12:34 PM

I personally think that they should split the HOY between Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta. I believe they are equal in their own right. I would never want to see them race against eachother.

This year there should be a tie.

"MY Opionion"

Waiting eagerly for any news of our boys, pictures "anything"

Linda/Maryland 15 Nov 2009 11:42 AM

Is it possible to find out Lentenor's Beyer even finishing 3rd? I saw that they had Summer Bird's and Rip Van Winkle's for the Classic...

Under the better late than never category, I have finally posted photos of Lentenor's debut at Keeneland.

Here's the link:

Zenyatta for HOTY since RA will race again in 2010. Zen is being sent to have little Zen's.

Glad to see they finally updated out posts. Hopefully all you FOB's will get this message.

Gerard and everyone else.  Jason has a blog to talk about Zenyatta and RA.  I feel that bringing it over here is kind of out of the way.  This is Barbaro's families blog and IMO I feel that we should try to stick with our beloved family.  :)   Just a thought.

stardustyrose 16 Nov 2009 3:48 AM

Ron.  Thanks for all you do.

I am just thinking.  WHY would anyone want to come to this blog that isn't a true FOB?  There are so many things to do with our lives that why in the world would anyone want to be anywhere they are not welcome or feel out of place.  There are so many people in this world.  I believe that sticking with the passion in our lives is what brings happieness to us.  I happen to love the Barbaro Family and love to help horses.  Feels better than getting a new dress or whatever whatever.  Stand STRONG for our Barbaro.  We must always keep him close.  :)  ♥Barbaro♥

I absolutely agree and have said so in other blogs. I like that each coast has their glorious Queen!! I really got tired of people putting Mr.Jackson down for

Still hoping for comments from Michael or Peter and Julien about Lentenor's first race.

Marigold 16 Nov 2009 12:02 PM

Stardustyrose....no offense but since they don't seem to be updating this site very often and we have no new news on our boys, I just threw in the comment about Zen and RA. Don't plan to talk about them on this site. Sorry if I offended you in anyway. Do you know of any news on our boys?

I see I'm not the only one who got notice of Lentenor's work. Wonder if MM is going to race him again before he ships the boys to Fla. Did see in my letter from Fair Hill that MM had already shipped some of his horses to Fla but there were no names mentioned.

I think Ron is still busy with all the sales so hopefully when he has time he'll see if he can get some news on our boys. Guess we'll just have to be bide our time until then.

Have a great week FOB's.

Lou in TX 17 Nov 2009 9:24 PM

Elaine...thank you so much for the pictures of our boy Lenny. Those are great head shots of him. Claire(my Granddaughter) will have more pictures for her scrapebook.

Wish I could have been there to watch him run. Thanks again.

Lou in TX 17 Nov 2009 9:44 PM

Dear Elaine,

Thank you for the beautiful pictures of our Lentnor.  He is so photogenic.  I'm eagerly waiting for their next race which will probably be in Florida.  Hopefully Nicanor will be healed by then.

Zenyatta and Rachel are beautiful fillies but I haven't seen a blog on Bloodhorse for them. (I may be looking in the wrong place) maybe that's why people are dropping their comments here.

Three Chimney's farm (home of Dynaformer) has started a fanclub that one can join and follow a favorite stallion.  Wouldn't that be wonderful if Mill Ridge can do this or BloodHorse where we can all follow our boys and La Ville.

I check this blog several times a day for new updates.  It's how I stay connected to Barbaro's Family and all the FOB's.

Chris K 17 Nov 2009 11:54 PM

elaine, the pictures are just beautiful. You have a great eye. Lentenor looks so mature and so much like his big brother, Barbaro, and so muscular. He is a gorgeous horse. It is hard to realize that he will be 3 years old after January 1 - less than 2 months from now. Ron,how about some feedback from the connections about his first race?.

Cal Gal 18 Nov 2009 2:05 PM

Thanks Elaine for your gorgeous pictures of Lentenor. It's just my opinion, but he has a military bearing jet the most gentle face. Looking forward to more news of both he and Nicanor. Grew up just outside of Saratoga, NY, went to the track often. However when Barbaro came along, his story just inspired me and racing itself has become something important in my life. God bless Bobby Frankel for asking for donations to provide homes for retired racehorses.

MONTANA 18 Nov 2009 3:11 PM

Really great pictures of our

Lentenor, Elaine!! I had never noticed the faint white snip on his right nostril or the white on the inside front left and right hind feet before. He does have that 'look',I do think that following these guys is

going to be very interesting

to us all.

Zia 18 Nov 2009 8:29 PM

Greg J....where are you? We have not heard anything from you since before Lentenor raced! Hope all is well!!!

Ron, sure would like to get some updates on our boys and their Mom! And there have been numerous requests for some feedback from MM, Julien, the Jacksons etc on how THEY thought Lentenor actually did in his first race......would love to hear some of that!!

How is everyone else doing? Hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving...including our special family, the Jacksons and ALL of those associated w the Barbaro Dynasty.
