Let's Take a Look at Lentenor's Race

When Lentenor makes his 2010 debut in the ninth race at Gulfstream Park on Wednesday, he will face a full field of challengers, some of which have stellar pedigrees and connections to match.

The 3-year-old full brother to Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro has been installed the 3-1 morning line favorite in the 1 1/16 mile turf race that drew 16 entries and for which only 12 can start. Of course, Lentenor will be seeking his first win as he makes his third career start for owners Roy and Gretchen Jackson and trainer Michael Matz, the team that achieved much credit for their efforts to get Barbaro to win the Derby and then attempting to keep him alive at all costs, but to no avail.

On paper, Lentenor looks like a legitimate favorite, having finished third in his career debut on the Polytrack at Keeneland and coming back to be second, after bobbling at the break, in his turf debut at Aqueduct. Looking at the past performances, we see that neither of the horses that won the races in which Lentenor competed have come back to win again. Also, according to Daily Racing Form statistics, Matz has a 15% win rate for horses that have been away from the races 31-60 days, which is the case with Lentenor. Through Sunnday, Matz had one win from 10 starters at the current Gulfstream Park meet.

The list of those expected to give Lentenor a stiff test would have to include Bigshot, who has experienced trouble in three of his four starts, obviously comprising his chances of victory. In fact, in the colt's last race of 2009 he was moved up to third from fourth after being forced into the hedge, with jockey Albarado doing a masterful job of keeping him from falling. Trainer Ken McPeek has numbers similar to Matz, with a 18% strike rate for horses coming back after layoffs of between 31-60 days and has won with 11% of starters during the current meet.

Trainer Christophe Clement, who is known as a turf specialist and trained Gio Ponti to earn Eclipse Awards as champion turf and older male horse of 2009, has first-time starter Alcomatch entered. Clement has won two of four races at the Gulf meet, has a 22% win rate with first-time starters and has been in the winner's circle with 25% of his first-time turf starters.

Several others here could jump up and win, but at this point it looks like Lentenor is in a good spot to earn his first career victory.

By the way, if any of you FOBs are confident Lenny will follow in Barbaro's footsteps and win the Derby, you can get great odds in Derby Future Wagers in Las Vegas. For example, as of Jan. 13 the Race & Sports Book at Lucky's has Lentenor at 100-1 odds, down from his opening odds of 150-1. Champion male 2-year-old Luckin a Lucky is Lucky's (coincidence?) early Derby favorite at 10-1.

It does look like a good spot for Lentenor, but all three of the firsters look dangerous.

Good Luck big boy!

DaisyMae 19 Jan 2010 10:47 AM

I will be pleased if Lentenor is in the money, though for him to break his maiden would just make a absolute great middle of the week.

I will be watching from home cheering him on to Victory.

Go, Lentenor!  You have the ability  -- you can do this, Lentenor!  We all pray for a safe race, above all. We love you Lenny!

Are the DRF stats for Clement lifetime?  For 2009 and early 2010 starts, pretty sure he is 15% debut, and 16% turf debut, and Matz is 18% off 45-90 day layoff, which is higher than his overall average of 15% (also for 09-10).  Would definitely agree with McPeek, Motion , Clement- and sires like El Prado, Smart Strike, Giant's Causeway and Tapit, it is a nice maiden field.

brettzky99 19 Jan 2010 12:47 PM

Waiting in excited anticipation!

Win for us Lentenor!

Lenny, don't let me down on my birthday!!! I know you can do it! <3

xmrsxmansonx 19 Jan 2010 1:51 PM

Am really anxious to see what he can do. Wasn't really pleased with the jockeys in his prior races, thought he could have been given a better chance to win. He was too far off the pace and erratic. Some jockeys are better than most riding a horse that comes from behind or off the pace. He needs a patient rider as was the case of Nicanor. Rosie got Nicanor out in front easily, letting him glide along and then poured it on at the end. Sounds easy doesn't it? It's not. The jockey can use too much horse getting to the front, we see it all the time and then they don't let the horse get a breather before asking for more. Too bad the horse should lose because of his rider but it does happen. I hope Lentenor has a safe trip, stays out of trouble and gets a chance to show what he has. Sure is a looker. Good luck and let the good times roll!

Dona 19 Jan 2010 2:11 PM

Stats are nice but the bottom line is the horses can't read the stats or the toteboard just ask Mine That Bird, improbable Derby winner.

As far as pedigreee Lentenor's is as good as anybody and well we all know what Michael Matz does so well. Bottom line which horse wants to run and avoids trouble on his raceday. You go Lentenor, we know you can do it.

chris 19 Jan 2010 2:12 PM

Jose......  Good luck tomorrow.. We know you will bring Lenny home safe and sound.   :)

♥Lentenor♥

stardustyrose 19 Jan 2010 2:20 PM

Safe and successful home, dear Lentenor!

Stardustyrose, thanks,he wasn't there last week and I couldn't find him.

This is a great field and I

hope that Jose gives him a

good ride. Jose is a rail hugger, good for some, but not

so much for our boys.

Be safe and run with the wind Lentenor!!!

Zia 19 Jan 2010 3:25 PM

Good luck my big boy, big brother is watching over you.  Our hearts remain heavy, even more now that Zenyatta was out voted by the east coasters.  Win this one for her.

Dallas 19 Jan 2010 3:44 PM

Wow Dona.  Rosie did a great job with Lentenor and knows the horse and the race conditions far better than you.  Horses aren't push button automatons, and young horses even less so.  Lets hope he gets another good, safe ride and ignore the jockey wannabe critics.

Lmaris 19 Jan 2010 3:57 PM

Lentenor you go big guy,  i have faith in you.  Stay safe and good luck i'm sure your big brother is watching from above.

jclson(fan of nicanor 19 Jan 2010 5:24 PM

Some of you have expressed pleasure that Lentenor drew the rail post.  It is not a good post position for most horses.

The horse in the one hole of a two-turn race (is this a two-turn race?) has to either go with the early speed or get shuffled back, often further back than they want, as all the horses come over on them going into the  first turn.  If it is a one-turn race--and some tracks do have one-turn 8.5f races), it is not so critical because there will be a very long backstretch before the only turn.

If there is a short run to the first turn, it is worse as everyone will be coming over more quickly.  The horses on the inside have to decide right out of the gate to go or to take back.  There will be a lot of crowding as everyone jockeys for position.  The speed horses in the race benefit from being on the inside since they are committed to going anyway--they won't have to come in from an outside post around or through the whole field--they'll already be on the rail and just have to go.  Lentenor seems to have tactical speed and his last race showed he can use it in the middle of the race and still have something left for the stretch run.

Another negative of being on the rail, especially a turf race, is that it is often the deepest (most tiring) part of the track.  Lentenor could easily find himself boxed down in the heavier going.

Psychologically, it is intimidating to be down at the rail as well.  You will notice that if two horses are fighting it out down the stretch, most times the outside horse will win.

JAJ 19 Jan 2010 5:29 PM

Dear Lentenor, I remember the day you were born and the spunky big fella you were, Nicanor helped heal a broken heart and then you came along,it was such a wonderous occasion with dreams of Greatness pointed your way.

Lots of LOVE to you, be safe and enjoy yourself.....hugs and kisses big fella....

missing Nicanor !!

Ragsy 19 Jan 2010 5:36 PM

Good luck tomorrow Lentenor.  Are there any recent pictures of all of Barbaro's brothers?  I  keep seeing posts about how big Nicanor has become. It seems like it has been so long since we last saw him.  Anyway, safe ride Lenny!!!

Penny in TX 19 Jan 2010 5:54 PM

Good luck to Lentenor

MJ 19 Jan 2010 8:21 PM

Lentenor should win.

geerace 19 Jan 2010 9:33 PM

Wishing all the horses a safe trip.

Hope Lentenor gets a clean run this time.  He had to be checked in the first turn his last race, due to a horse in front of him, and he bobbled the start.  Get off well this time Lentenor, so Jose has a chance to help you show your stuff.

With any racing luck, it could be Lentenor's day.

HorseFirst 19 Jan 2010 9:39 PM

You go get'um Lentenor!! All the FOB"s and a whole lot more folks will be with you in spirit tomorrow. Big brother says " You can do this little brother."

Just come home safe and happy young colt. We all love you and all your brothers very much. That also goes for Fillynor. Hopefully she will enter this world safe and sound.  Soon!

Gooo Lenny...see ya in the winners circle!

Lou in TX 20 Jan 2010 12:12 AM

I was watching Lentenor's second race and towards the end he was looking to the right as if he was distracted by the fans. If he's easily distracted, could blinkers help?

Chris K 20 Jan 2010 12:39 AM

Good luck on your race today Lentenor! I won't get to see unfortunately but I will watch the replay.

anniedixie65 20 Jan 2010 9:42 AM

Man I'd love to see him blow their doors off...5 lengths plus and that puts him in a stakes for his next race and let's begin the run for the roses preps!

JDsopinion 20 Jan 2010 10:11 AM

I will be watching you on the internet today Lentenor. Have a happy win today. And above all have fun and stay safe.

Kathy 20 Jan 2010 10:13 AM

Barbaro to Lentenor:Go get em bro!!

Tracy 20 Jan 2010 11:17 AM

We are going to Gulfstream Today to see Lentenor.  I know his post position is #1, but is he wearing #2? Can anyone advise?

KLG 20 Jan 2010 12:21 PM

Zia......

Hmmmmmmm that is weird.  I talked to him the other day and he was not riding that day.  Can't remember what day it was... :)

stardustyrose 20 Jan 2010 12:57 PM

Let's show 'em what you've got, Lentenor! I know you can do it, big guy. :) Watching you on the sidelines of your first race was simply amazing to me - even though you struggled to get your race legs. You've got 'em this time! Love you and your brothers (and sister whenever she decides to show up). :)

mistress_equus17 20 Jan 2010 1:14 PM

Lou in TX.....

Hey there.  I love it... ♥Fillynor♥  That is coooooool.  :)

stardustyrose 20 Jan 2010 2:08 PM

Chris K,

I watched the race again.  Coming off the turn, Lentenor did not change leads when he should have and the jockey kept asking him by pulling him to the right to get him to change.  So, yes, it looked as if his head was turned to the right but the reason was the jockey was doing it to get him to switch leads.

Also, the jockey was pulling him towards the center of the track to run on the outside of the eventual winning horse.  I also thought Lentenor was lugging in a bit (drifting towards the rail instead of tracking straight) so the rider was working to keep him straight.  The jockey would be trying to ask Lentenor to travel/turn a bit to the right and turning his head to the right to get him to move towards the right or at least keep on a straight path when Lentenor wanted to drift in towards the rail.  If he drifts in he risks interfering with the horse on his inside.

He might have lugged in because he was really tired or just running greenly.  There is always the possibility that he was lugging in because he was hurt but I don't think that was the case--he was just tired and inexperienced.  Racehorses don't have the steering that the older riding horse does.

Do you know what a lead is?  At a gallop, a horse travels with a four-beat gait.  The goal is to train a horse to automatically be on the right lead on the straight parts of the racetrack (down the back or the stretch) and be on the left lead on every turn.  Every morning they go out to gallop, you want the horse to change leads on their own going into and coming out of every turn.

The left lead has the horses right hind hitting the ground first, followed by their left hind, their right front and finally their left front, and finally their "leading" leg.  I find it amazing these horses can switch leads at the end of a race at a flat out gallop when they are so tired.

The reason you want to switch leads is that they get tired galloping on the one lead.  A horse will get a burst of energy when they switch from one lead to the other.  You really notice this in the stretch.

Alydar was a horse who never switched to his right lead in the stretch (nor did his son Turkoman).  I wonder if Affirmed would have won the Triple Crown if Alydar had switched leads.

JAJ 20 Jan 2010 2:50 PM

FYI,

Jose fell off his mount in race #4, The outrider stopped the race as the field was near the top of the stretch, The race was called a no contest. Jose was on the ground for a minute or so, But, Got up, I don't know the extent of his injuries, BUT, He is off the rest of his mounts today, He will not be on Lentenor, No word yet on a replacement jockey or if Lentenor will be a scratch, Hope Jose is all right.

Greg J. 20 Jan 2010 3:15 PM

Lentenor's race has just taken a

setback -- Jose was thrown in his last race and will be off horses the rest of the day.

Lentenor has no jockey at the moment.

Cal Gal 20 Jan 2010 3:31 PM

I have youbet up and they are on the 6th race.  Lenty is 9.... :)  Starting to get nervous.  SAFETY SAFETY SAFTEY..... We love you Lenty.. :)

stardustyrose 20 Jan 2010 3:41 PM

John Velazquez will be riding Lentenor!

Cal Gal 20 Jan 2010 3:49 PM

Update, John Velazquez will be Lentenor's new Jockey, Jose did walk off on his own power to the Jockey's room, He is off the rest of his mounts today...

John V. is a very good jockey, Has had three mounts today, A first, Second, and a third...

Greg J. 20 Jan 2010 4:07 PM

Why are there so many scratches in these races today where Lenty is running.  ????????

Greg J. Do you know??????

Lentenor WE ALL LOVE YOU ♥

stardustyrose 20 Jan 2010 4:22 PM

Have a save Trip Lenny!

Kate 20 Jan 2010 4:53 PM

John V. has had 4 mounts today, His order of finish in succession:

His 5th mount will be with Lentenor, See a pattern?, Fingers Crossed...

Greg J. 20 Jan 2010 4:55 PM

Come on Lentenor, go big boy!  I am staying at work late tonight so i can see the results come up on Bloodhorse. Otherwise, i'll be driving while he is running.

Deby 20 Jan 2010 4:58 PM

Lentenor looks very sharp in his maiden win under Johnny Valasquez!! ... can we say shades of Barbaro??

Bobby 20 Jan 2010 5:21 PM

LENTENOR WINS BY 5 LENGTHS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Greg J. 20 Jan 2010 5:23 PM

No longer a maiden!!! Great job on the win Lentenor!!

Arem 20 Jan 2010 5:25 PM

Lentenor ran a very good race.  He appears to have a smoother stride than either Barbaro or Nicanor, far more efficient and appears to "pound" less than Barbaro.  I was impressed. Hopefully he will continue to do well.

yawn 20 Jan 2010 5:25 PM

Greg J.  Lenty did really well.  Can he make the Derby Trail?  That was a very impressive win.  :)

♥Lentenor♥  YOU DID IT and with a lot of ease at that!  :)

stardustyrose 20 Jan 2010 5:26 PM

Good Job Lenny, knew you would do it!!

Kate 20 Jan 2010 5:34 PM

I have a feeling that Lentenor is going to be an un-deafeted colt from this point on.  Big Brother sure was watching him today.  :)

Zia.. He didn't run, he flew... :)

stardustyrose 20 Jan 2010 5:36 PM

Great run Lentenor your looking good...Johnny V great jockey, he rode Rags To Riches in the 2007 Belmont against Curlin..

Lenny is a rather smooth runner isnt he.

Cant wait until Nicanor is running too...love those boys, yes I do...

Hiya, Stardusty Ro

Ragsy 20 Jan 2010 5:49 PM

Yawn, thank you for the kind words about Lentenor.  You CAN be fair.

He ran that race today like it was his for the winning.  From the post parade to the gate to the finish line, it was HIS race.

thank you John Velasquez, you rode him wisely and well. Hope we get to see you aboard Lentenor many many more times.

Cal Gal 20 Jan 2010 10:54 PM

I believe that Barbaro is reincarnated in Len and will win the Triple Crown.
