This is the real truth of the 1967 Jersey Derby at GS......Ycaza was truly one of the all time greats! He led the latin invasion and a lot of influential people didn't like it...Here's the rest of the story!!! Steward Keene Daingerfield didn’t like John Nerud and hated Manny Ycaza for his aggressive riding. After the race, Nerud was quoted as saying the decision was prejudiced. He was called in to the steward’s office to explain his comment. When told there was a rumor going around that he said the Garden State stewards were prejudiced, Nerud said, “That ain’t no rumor. You probably know this already but Calvin Borel will be riding Texas Bling in the Arkansas Derby. Woohoo !!!!!!! I think this might be his Kentucky Derby horse. Tough race to get the points but he looks like he could be up to the task.

A great rider, but his reputation as being overly aggressive didn't help him with the stewards.How many times was he suspended? If it were any other jock besides Ycaza, Dr. Fager wouldn't have dq'd out of that win at AC as a two year old. I don't think he should have been taken down, but like I said the presence of Ycaza on the horse was all the stewards needed to justify a dq. Sad.

Just my opinion, but I still believe, to this day, that Ycaza cost Ridan the Preakness victory. Instead of riding his horse, Ycaza was busy fighting Rotz on Greek Money. Oh well, that was a lifetime ago, but Ridan remains one of my all-time favorite horses.

Back in the day, wasn't the Flamingo at Hialeah more important than the Florida Derby??? I know it was when Slew won it...and beat the Florida Derby winner in the process. Not to take anything away from this look back. And this year's Florida Derby winner traces to Slew thru Malibu Moon and A.P. Indy. As does the runner-up, Itsmyluckyday, on the dam's side, through slew's son, Doneraile Court.

Manuel came to Seattle to ride at Longacres race track when he was about 17.He lived with my family that summer and won a few races but wasn't to successful.He was a little overly aggressive as rider then and wasn't to popular.He was a good guy and it was a shame he didn't do better, he then went back to Panama for a while then returned and the rest is history.He never liked to be reminded of that small failure and maybe it was because my Dad was his agent (Dad never really liked being an agent).I remember when we took him to the mountains and he saw snow for the first time,he was amazed and I still have the pictures.He was a handsome young guy and good to my brother and I.Good story

Of the jockey's I've witnessed since 1960, I'd rank Ycaza in the top three, along with Baeza and Shoemaker. On a speed horse, Ycaza was probably #1.
