I was here these last few days for the 30th annual Japan Cup as a guest of the Japan Racing Association (JRA). It was the first time I ever had sushi for Thanksgiving dinner.

re: International Connections

The Japanese are intensely deliberate and dedicated students of everything they do, and will eventually rise to the top of horse racing just like they have so many other diverse areas such as breeding show dogs and building highly efficient automobiles. I have found them to be extremely honorable people to deal with.

Of course they shop the US for canine breeding stock from our vast gene pool, and I expect that will be even more true of horses since the one thing they have a very limited supply of is acreage. I hope they buy mostly 2 YOs in training because of the lack of land on which to properly grow out young horses.

Interesting you mention that they have a KY Derby equivalent race that is the highlight of the racing year. They love to copy American culture, and have a Westminster Kennel Club equivalent dog show called the All Asia International.

Next time you pass through Narita keep an eye out for the Animal Import Quarantine Office. The sign features one of my white Borzois that took Best in Show at the All Asia and went on to #1 All Breeds.

Those numbers are mind boggling, wow!

Also, Buena Vista was robbed, that has to be one of the worst decisions I have ever seen, I honestly couldn't believe it. Not fair to Buena Vista and her connections!
