You covered a lot of topics there. I think you pointed out the problems associated with racing. We are like a beehive with no queen. Eventually all the workers go scurrying about without direction and the hive dies. So far this has not happened to the racing industry because there exist a bunch of minor queens with enough control of their self interests to be able to allow racing to limp along, a little more pronounced each year.

I think your analogies to the team sports rings true. What has made the NFL is the sports media, TV. In turn the NFL has increased revenue for the broadcasts media with special (handicapping)shows like the NFL draft.

Horse racing would be able to capture a large audience if properly presented. People love horses. People love the excitement of racing. People love the behind the scenes of racing. If properly marketed, (not by having a cute little blonde show why she is not calling races), racing could build excitement with the series leading to the triple crown and the BC. It would take cooperation of all the interests involved: the jockey clubs, the racetracks, the owners, the trainers, and the new queen.

Yep. Just like the 4 major sports - and get rid of these good ole boy crony and easily corrupted kangaroo courts in each jurisdiction. No more buying off the local officials for the successful hop trainers. And we know who they are...

Is it "joining together for the breed" or joining together to permit a few deep pockets to capture TB racing for their benefit? This subsumes all issues for the Fred Popes of the world. Absolutely everybody in racing should oppose this crowd wherever they raise their self serving noggins. Racing should be expanded instead of contracted. Pope and his buddies want the latter, and hence, of course they're anti-lasix.

The problem with this theory is that a lot of low level claiming races with 12 horses a lot of times handles more money than a stake race with five hores. So who gets what?

The individual thoroughbred and, perhaps, the breed would be best protected by those with true expertise, knowledge, and ability, rather than those with mere deep pockets, family name, or public image. Same could be said for our country, or any country. For example, let the scientists, and those knowledgeable without agenda take the lead in this drug issue-a path not taken by "the rest of the world".
