As we settle in to the marathon Keeneland breeding stock sale, I will occasionally comment on hips that are of special interest to me. Here are a couple of Book Two mares that I'd love to add to my little herd. Who are you watching during the big sale?

Fasig-Tipton includes a useful tool to keep its November Selected catalog pages up to date. (Even if you're not impressed by that, take a look at the sample page I've cited -- think Sea the Stars' family and Rachel Alexandra's sire.)

One of offerings at the Keeneland January Thoroughbred breeding stock sale is a mare that has long been on my own personal "watch" list.

Grade III-placed winner of over $200,000, in foal to a nice $15,000 sire. A proven producer... by a solid sire... out of a successful black type family. The type of mare many breeders aspire to add to their broodmare herd. Only 10 years old, and a real looker, to boot. Her low bid price did not reflect her true value.

Dam of Rags to Riches, Jazil, and Casino Drive fails to produce a foal in 2008 or 2009. Does that affect her value in the Thoroughbred sales ring?

You'd think an "aunt" to Horse of the Year and ten-times millionaire Curlin would be a sure thing -- especially when she brought over $200,000 as a yearling. But concerns about her race record and four years without a foal have to be factored in to the equation.

Normally, the dam of a popular graded stakes winner -- carrying her full sibling, nonetheless -- would garner only positive attention at the breeding stock sales. In the case of Eight Belles' dam, though, some of the talk is about whether the repeat mating was the best idea.
